Safety Precautions
The instruction manual and the labels affixed to the products or equipment give important
information for using products safely. It helps prevent damage to properties and hazard to people
who use them or work with them.
Make yourself familiar with the signal words and signs in this page, then read the safety
precautions that follow and always follow the instructions to avoid hazards.
●Explanation of signal words
DANGER Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which could result in
death or serious injury, if you do not follow the instructions.
CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which may result in minor
or moderate injury and/or property damage, if you do not follow the
instructions.
Note:
1. A serious injury means a loss of eye sight, injury, burn (high or low temperature), electric
shock, bone fracture, intoxication or other injury with an after-effect or requiring
hospitalization or visiting a hospitalization or visiting a clinic for medical treatment for a long
time.
2. "Injury means a wound, burn, electric shock or other hurt which does not require
hospitalization or protracted visits to a hospital as an outpatient.
3. "Property damage" means concomitant damage to buildings, houses, equipment, fixtures,
appliances and materials.
●Hazard alert shapes and symbols
Circle band with a diagonal slash means "Prohibition" or “You must not do."
Prohibited action is shown in the circle or described near the circle.
Filled circle means "Mandatory Action" or "Do as indicated."
Required action is shown in the circle or described near the circle.
Note: Descriptions of “Prohibition” and “Mandatory action” vary according to the display on
main unit.
●Important precautions for system operation
Warning
If power failure occurs or the power system (including the power switch) is turned off during
operation, malfunction of the system or loss of data or programs may occur.
Any resulting damage is not covered by warranty.
To prevent such accidents, provide system protection by installing a UPS or utilizing the shutdown
function.
Also, in case of loss of data or programs, create a backup regularly.

1. Safety precautions on installation
DANGER
Mandatory action
Always ground the device.
•Otherwise, an electric shock or fire may occur.
Caution
Mandatory action
Avoid installation or storage in the following environment.
•Place with dust
•Place with corrosive gases (SO2, H2S) or flammable gases
•Place with vibrations or shocks over tolerance
•Place with condensation due to rapid temperature changes
•Low or high temperature outside the installation conditions
•High humidity outside the installation conditions
•Place with a direct sunlight
•Near equipment generating strong radio waves and magnetic fields
Mandatory action
Install the device in a place where maintenance and
inspection are easy.
Otherwise, recovery upon failure may be difficult, resulting in a major
accident.
Prohibition
Do not block the airflow orifices, inlets, and outlets of the
device.
Fire or failure may occur due to overheat.
Prohibition
Do not apply any voltage or current over the specified
rating to the input-output terminals.
The device may be damaged.
Mandatory action
Place the input-output signal lines and transmission lines
away from the power line or equipment generating
magnetic and electric fields.
Otherwise, malfunction or failure of the device may occur due to noise.

2. Safety precautions on maintenance and inspection
DANGER
Mandatory action
When inserting or removing the module or when connecting
the equipment, turn off the power.
Otherwise, an electric shock accident or failure of the device may
occur.
Mandatory action
When inserting or removing the module after wiring, make
sure that the external power supply is turned off.
There are electrodes on the back of the external terminal block of the
module, which may cause an electric shock.
Caution
Mandatory action
Do not drop, bump, or apply strong shock to the device or
module.
Failure may occur.
Mandatory action
Before touching the device or module, touch a grounded
metal to discharge static electricity of the human body.
Otherwise, static electricity may cause malfunction or failure of the
device.
Mandatory action
Place the module removed from the chassis or base unit on
a conductive mat or conductive bag on a grounded table.
Otherwise, parts may be damaged due to static electricity.
Mandatory action
Wipe off stain on the device or module with a soft cloth.
For severe stain, use a wet cloth that is wrung out tightly.
If stain is left, wrong determination or operation may occur.
Mandatory action
Do not use any benzene or thinner to remove stain on the
device or module.
It may cause deformation or discoloration of the device panel or
module.

3. Safety precautions on aging part replacement
DANGER
Mandatory action
When replacing a power fuse or alarm fuse, turn off the
switch of the corresponding device.
Otherwise, an electric shock or fire may occur.
4. Safety precautions on daily use
Warning
Prohibition
Some parts in the module become very hot after
energization. Do not touch these parts.
It may cause a burn.
Prohibition
Do not block the inlets of the module.
The cooling efficiency of the module may be affected.
Mandatory action
When the ambient temperature or internal temperature of
the device with the module increases abnormally high or
when failure occurs in the device, stop using the device
and turn off the power, and contact the nearest Toshiba
service station.
Using the device as is may cause fire due to overheat.

Prohibition
Do not touch the parts, terminals, connectors, and solder
surfaces in the module.
Electrostatic breakdown of ICs and LSIs may occur, causing failure.
An injury may occur due to the end of the lead wire of the parts.
Prohibition
Do not disassemble or modify the device or module.
Safety of the device may be lost, and malfunction or failure of the
device may occur.
Prohibition
Do not bend, pull, or twist the power cord and cable
forcefully.
A break or overheat may occur.
Mandatory action
Do not operate the function setting switches of the module
during operation.
Malfunction of the device or accident may occur.

Limitation of use
■This product is not developed and manufactured for use in a system where equipment such as
the one directly involved in human life (Note 1) is included. Please do not use this system for
those applications.
■To use this product in a system where equipment such as the one human safety is involved and
affecting the maintenance of public function (Note 2), special consideration (Note 3) regarding
the system’s operation, maintenance and control is required. Contact Toshiba’s sales
department.
Note 1 Example of equipment directly involved in human life is as follows:
xMedical equipment such as a medical control system for sustaining life or equipment
used for medical operations
Note 2 System including equipment where human safety is involved and affecting the
maintenance of public function is a system such as shown below:
xMain control system of an atomic power generating plant, safety protection system for
nuclear facilities and other critical safety systems
xOperation control system and air traffic control system of mass transformational
system
Note 3 Special consideration is to build a safety system (foolproof design, failsafe design,
redundant system design etc.) by discussing thoroughly with Toshiba’s engineers.
Note on handling
■As a guide, the service life of this product is about 10 years (depending on the operating
conditions). Aging parts include aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Overhauls by module
replacement are recommended. The aluminum electrolytic capacitors are aging parts, and
their life varies significantly depending on the ambient temperature. The life is about 10 years
when the device ambient temperature is 35°C. The life decreases almost by half when the
ambient temperature increases by 10°C.

Introduction
The next generation Toshiba Integrated Control System TOSDIC-CIE DS is an integrated production
system that combines the de-facto standard and Toshiba's original control technology. In addition to
Toshiba's advanced control technology and computer technology, a standard multi-vendor network and
easy-to-use integrated engineering tools are adopted to achieve a highly reliable system in an open
environment.
This manual describes the specifications and handling method of the loop system components that
correspond to TOSDIC VLCPXn cards.
The following figure shows an example of system configuration when TOSDIC-AS is updated to
CIEMAC-DS.

Loop system configuration
The loop system is connected to the main control system via the serial bus as shown in Fig. 1.1.
The loop system consists of the base unit, marshaling unit, and loop module, and is connected
to the terminal block unit of the existing DPCS, as shown in Fig. 1.2.

The loop system consists of the base unit, marshaling unit, and loop module. These
components are directly connected to the terminal block unit of the existing DPCS via the
dedicated cables. The DPCS system can be migrated to the DS system smoothly without
rewiring the external input-output lines.
High reliability can be achieved by online insertion/removal and redundancy of bus signals that
are essential for continuous operation of instrument control, and intelligence functions that
support diversity of signals from the site allow applications in a wide variety of fields.
