Safety Precautions
OIS-DS52 and the instruction manual give important information for using products
safely. It helps prevent damage to properties and hazard to people who use them or to
others.
Make yourself familiar with the signal words and signs in this page then read the
safety precautions that follow and always follow the instructions to avoid hazards.
Explanation of signal words
Signal word is a word that designates a degree or level of hazard seriousness.
The words WARNING and CAUTION are used for the products.
WARNING Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which could result in death or
serious injury, if you do not follow the instructions.
CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which may result in minor or
moderate injury and/orproperty damage, if you do not follow the instructions.
Hazard alert shapes and symbols
Following shapes and symbols are used in the safety precaution labels affixed to the
products and in other places including operation manuals for giving safety instructions.
Filled circle means "Mandatory Action" or "Do as indicated."
Required action is shown in the circle or described near the circle.
Circle band with a diagonal slash means "Prohibition" or " You must not do."
Prohibited action is shown in the circle or described near the circle.
Triangle means "Hazard Alerting" or "Be alert against hazard."
The kind of hazard is shown in the triangle or described near the triangle.
Exclamation point with a triangle is a safety alert symbol which indicates a potential hazard.
It is used with a Signal Word.
Square or rectangle means "Information Messages" or "Notice."
•Make sure to observe the following points.
WARNING
System fault or data loss may occur, if the power fails or the power system (including
the power switch) is turned off. Toshiba cannot assure any compensation for the
resulting damages. Take precautions in advance to protect the system in order to
prevent such event to take place. Also back up your data regularly to minimize the
possible damage by loss of data as a result of such event.

•Some points about peripherals
Regarding peripheral equipment, read the instruction manuals accompanying the
devices and follow the instructions. Even similar warnings and precautions may be
indicated in different ways; please be careful not be confused by them.
1. Safety Precautions for Installation
WARNING
Grounding required:
To avoid the risk of electric shock or fire, be sure to ground the equipment.
CAUTION
Choose proper environment for installation:
Avoid grounding and storing the equipment in the following environments:
•Location with considerable dust
•Location in which flammable or corrosive gases (such as SO2and H2S) are present
•Location where vibration or shock exceeds allowable limits
•Location where condensation may occur due to rapid change in temperature
•Location where the temperature is not within the specified range for installation
•Location where the humidity exceeds the specified limits for installation
•Location in the direct sunlight
•Location near a device that generates strong radio waves or magnetic fields
Considerations for maintenance and inspection:
Install the equipment in a place that facilitates maintenance and inspection. If not, in case
of malfunctioning, it may hinder the recovery of the system and result in serious accident.
Ensure proper ventilation:
Do not block vents, intake or exhaust openings of the equipment. Blocking them may cause
malfunctioning or overheating which may result in fire.
Ensure correct cabling:
Correctly connect the accompanying cables to the JOKC1 card and keyboard UOPK8UE
connectors. Incorrect connection may result in damaging the equipment.
Avoid noise interference:
Place I/O signal and data transmission signal cables away from the power cables and the
devices that generate magnetic or electric fields. Otherwise, interference noise may cause
the equipment to malfunction or fail.

2. Safety Precautions for Inspection and Maintenance
WARNING
Turn off power:
Before attaching or detaching the JOKC1 card or keyboard UOPK8UE or connecting the
equipment, make sure to turn off the power. Failure to do so may result in electric shock or
equipment fault.
CAUTION
Avoid shock:
Do not drop, bump or give strong shocks to the JOKC1 card or the keyboard UOPK8UE.
Shocks may cause malfunction.
Discharge static electricity:
Before touching the JOKC card or the keyboard UOPK8UE, discharge static electricity
from your body by touching a metal that is grounded. Static electricity may cause
equipment to malfunction or fail.
Use a conductive mat or bag to avoid static:
When the JOKC1 card is removed from the OIS PC, it should be placed on a conductive
bag (containing reserve cards, etc.) or on a static proof mat, which is put on a grounded
work bench. Static electricity may damage electrical parts.
Wipe off dirt:
Wipe off dirt and dust from the JOKC1 card and the keyboard UOPK8UE, using a soft cloth.
If the dirt is persistent, wet a cloth, wring it dry and then use it on the dirt. Dirt on the parts
may result in faulty actions and operations.
Do not use paint thinner for cleaning:
Do not use benzine or paint thinner for cleaning the JOKC1 card or the keyboard
UOPK8UE. These chemicals will distort or discolor the JOKC1 card or the keyboard
UOPK8UE.

3. Safety Precautions for Daily Use
WARNING
Check specifications:
Before using the equipment, make sure that the capacity, voltage and regulation of the
power supply meet the specifications of the equipment. In case they don not, the
equipment may not only work adequately but maysuffer a breakdown or overheat that may
result in fire.
Turn off power in the event of a problem:
If the temperature in or around the equipment rises abnormally high or an unusual fault
occurs to the equipment, stop using the equipment and turn off its power and then contact
your Toshiba representative. If the equipment is left alone, overheat may result in fire.
CAUTION
Remove static electricity first:
When installing/removing the JOKC1 card onto/from the OIS PC, make sure to remove the
static electricity first. Unremoved static electricity may cause equipment failure or data
damage.
Do not touch components:
Do not touch the JOKC1 card parts, pins, connectors or soldered surfaces with any part of
your body. Static electricity may damage IC's or LSI's, and cause equipment to fail. This
may also result in damaging the pointed end of the component lead.
Do not disassemble the equipment:
Do not disassemble or modify the JOKC1 card or the keyboard UOPK8UE. Doing so may
not only lessen equipment safety but also may result in equipment malfunction or failure.
Handle cords and cables properly:
Do not force to pull, twist or bend cords and cables of power supply. Otherwise cables may
break or become overheated.
Keep off metals:
Do not insert metals or drop clips, etc. into any openings in the main unit of the equipment.
Doing so may cause fire.
Remove the power cord before work:
Before starting the work, turn off the power switch and the AC input switch and then remove
the power cord plug. Negligence to do so may cause electric shock or failure.

 This product is not meant for use in systems which include (note 1) equipment that
directly affects human life. Therefore it is not meant to be used for that purpose.
 If this product is to be used for systems including (note 2) equipment that is a part of
people′s safety, and has a great affect on the functional support of the public, please
consult with our sales counter, since (note 3) special consideration is needed concerning
the system application, maintenance, and control.
(Note 1)Equipment that directly affects human life includes the following:
•Medical instruments, such as life support equipment, and instruments used in
an operating room.
(Note 2)Systems which includes equipment that takes part in people's safety, and has
great influence on functional support of public includes the following:
•A main control system for a nuclear power plant, a safetyprotection system for
nuclear power facilities, and other important system for safety purpose.
•Operation control system for mass transportation and air traffic control system.

This manual describes the procedure for incorporating Toshiba's software, keyboard
controller JOKC1 and operator’s keyboard UOPK8UE into your personal computer to
construct the operator interface station OIS-DS for Toshiba's integrated control system

1. Unpacking
In case of purchasing the control card as ′JOKC12′, the following items are supposed to be
in the case. Open the case and make sure that none of them is missing.
•An operator’s keyboard control card (JOKC1)
•An attached RS-232C cable (ZCDEYAA)
•An instruction manual (6F8C0808)
Note:
•The operator’s keyboard (UOPK8UE) and the keyboard cable (ZCDEWAA)
are packed separately.
•In case of ordering the control card as ′JOKC1′, the control card will be
shipped without the interfase cable and the manual.

Operator’s Keyboard Control Card (JOKC1)
This interface card of a PCI expansion card type connects the OIS-DS main unit (your
personal computer) and the operator’s keyboard (UOPK8UE). The JOKC1 card is used by
being mounted on the main unit PCI bus expansion slot of the OIS-DS.
The names and functions of the card parts are described below.

1)Operator’s keyboard connector (CN1)
Refers to the connector for connecting the operator’s keyboard (UOPK8UE).
Connected with a specialized twisted pair cable.
2)Main unit connector (CN2)
Refers to the connector for connecting the COM1 port of the OIS-DS main unit.
Connected with a specialized RS-232C cable.
3)CPU operation display LED (RUN)
Indicates that the local processor on the operator’s keyboard control card (JOKC1) is
operating correctly. If the processor's operation is normal, the LED repeats its
blinking.

4) Communication operation display LED (STAT)
Indicates that the local processor on the operator’s keyboard control card (JOKC1)
is communicating correctly with the processor of the OIS-DS main unit. If the
communication status is normal, the LED repeats its blinking.
Operator’s Keyboard (UOPK8UE)
The operator’s keyboard (UOPK8UE) is an 8-loop specialized keyboard used for
monitoring operation. A specialized cable is used to connect it to the operator’s keyboard
control card (JOKC1).
Figure 2.2 show the key alignment of the main keyboard. Figure 2.3 (on page 7) shows the
key alignment of the remote keyboard section.

Sets the mode to Cascade.
