Thankyouforpurchasing PA960.
YourPA960 isarugged,compactand lightweightpalm-sizecomputer.It
utilizesthe WindowsCE®operating system,and incorporatesanintegralbar
code scanning laserdevice,colorLCDwithtouchscreen,keypad,IrDA
interface,and wireless communicationcapability.It providesthe userwitha
standardWindows-based environmentforcustomizing and operating the
device.
ThisPA960 productreferenceguide willguide youtoaccess yourPA960.

NOTICE
Thisunitisequipped withabatterypack and backup battery.It ispossiblethatthe Unitech
PA960 maynotpower-on due tobatterydischarge asaresultofstorage.
Inthe abovesituation,plug the PA960 tothe RS232 orUSB cablewhichiswithDC inportor
putthe unitintothe UnitechPA960 Cradle(with12V/2AAC-DC adapter),and recharge the unit
for16 hoursinordertofullycharge itsbackup battery.
The backup batterywill chargefromexternalpowerorthe mainbattery(ifthe mainbatterystill
hasenough powertoturnon).Inthe eventthe mainbatteryisfullycharged,refrainfromusing
the PA960 for16 hoursinorderforthe mainbatterytofullycharge the backup battery.
Backing-up databybackup batteryonlywithoutthe mainbatteryinstalled inbatterycompart-
mentmaytakeaslong as8hours.Therefore,inordertopreventdataprotection failuredue to
backup batteryfailure,do notleavethe PA960 withoutthe rechargeablebatterypack installed,
orwithoutconnection toACpowerforan extended period oftime.

Therearethree ways toprovide powertothe PA960:
NOTE:Datayou entermaynotbe properlystored untilthe built-inbackup battery
hasbeen adequatelycharged.Pleasebe remided toturnon the back up battery
beforeyou charge the terminal.
Installing theBatteryPack
Removethe batterycompartmentdoor
(located on the lowerback side ofthe unit)
byusing the screwdriverofStylus.
Position the batterypack withthe labelside towardsyou,
and the batterypack strap towardsthe bottomofthe unit.
Insertand fullyseatthe batterypack,making surethe
shape ofthe batterypack fitsthe shape ofthe battery
compartment.

Orplacethe PA960 intotheDocking
Station (firstconnectthe powersupply
totheDocking Station).
Connectthe RS232/Charging CableorUSB/
Charging Cabletothe PA960,and then connect
theACadaptertothe cable’s powerjackand an
electricaloutlet.

3.Position the batterypack and install the battery
compartmentdoorbyusing sylusscrewdriver.
Charging theMainand Backup Batteries fortheFirstTime
It maytakeup to16 hourstofullycharge the emptybackup battery.The firsttime
charge shouldbe foratleast16 hourstoinsureapropercharge.
CAUTION:Operating thePA960 forthefirsttimewithouttheAC adapter,
and withoutfullycharging thebackup batterymay resultinloss ofdata
storedinRAMmemory.

If aPCMCIAcardisinserted intothe PA960 without
previouslyattaching aPulling Tag,the cardcan be
removed byaffixing alengthofadhesivetape tothe
surfaceofthe cardand pulling the cardoutbypulling
outwardon the pieceoftape.
PCMCIAPulling Tags
Pulling Tagssimplifythe removalofPCMCIAcardsfromthe
PA960.Beforeinserting aPCMCIAcard,removeone ofthe
three Pulling Tagsfromthe Pulling Tag sheetand adhereitto
bothsidesofthe PCMCIAcard,leaving ashort(approx.½ ”)tab.
Toremovethe PCMCIAcard,simplypull outwardon thistab.
Using theStylus
CAUTION:Neveruseanything otherthan thePA960’s styluson the
screen.Using anotherobjectasastyluscouldcausepermanent
damage.
Towritedataintoafieldon aform,usethe stylustoprintthe letters
ornumbers.Useverylightpressure.

Tomakeachoicefromamenu,lightlytap the tipofthe styluson
thatchoice.

InsertCFcardtoPA960
Find the CFdrawerfromPA960 package,insertCFcardtothe
CFdrawer.Then insertthe CFdrawertothe PA960 and place
the CFslotdoor.Re-install the batterydoortoPA960 withscrew
driverofPA960 stylus.

Pressing theON/OFF Key
The UnitechPA960 welcomescreen appears.The
WindowsCE®screen will appearshortlythereafter.
Adjusting ScreenBrightness
Press [FUNC]keyand Cursorkeytodecrease
orincreasescreen brightness.
Calibrating thePA960
The PA960 will promptyou tocalibratethe unitby
tapping asequenceofscreen locations.Tap
gentlybutfirmly.When you havecompleted the
seriesoftaps,press the [ENT]keytoconfirmitor
press the [ESC]keytocancelit.
Thisscreen will automaticallyappearwhen the
unitispowered-on forthe firsttimeorafterthe
systemisreset. Thisscreen can alsobe ac-
cessed atanytimebypressing the hotkey
[FUNC]and the [ESC]key.
Setting TimeZone,Date,and Time
AfterCalibrating the PA960,the “Date/TimeProp-
erties”dialog boxwill appear.Followthe steps
belowtosetthe dateand time.
Protective ScreenFilm
The PA960 screen shipswithaprotectiveplasticfilm.You mayremovethisif
desired bypeeling fromone corner.The screen will be moresusceptibleto
scratching withoutthe film,butwill be morereadable.

Followthe stepsbelowtosetup yourtimezone.
1.Tap the location arrowtosee alistofcities.
2.Chooseyourlocation (ornearestlisted one).
3.Selectthe DaylightSavingsTimecheck box,ifnecessary.
4.Tap the APPLYbutton.
Tap the Left orRightarrowstoscroll the month.
Ordirectlytap location ofyearormonthtochange the yearormonthsetting.

FlashMemory
TosavetoFlashStorage,selectFile,SaveTo,and
selectFlashStorage justlikeyou wouldselectanyother
storage medium.
FlashMemoryisare-writablelocation inwhichtostore
up to8MBofprogramsand datafiles.The benefitof
thisfeatureisthatfilesand programssaved inFlash
Memoryareunaffected bythe PA960’s powerstatus.
Toaccess the contentsofFlashMemory,simplyselect
“MyComputer”on the desktop and then select“Flash
Storage”.The programsand datafilescurrentlystored
inFlashMemorywill be displayed.

Keypad
The PA960 keypad contains19 keys,including Cursorkey,0~9,Alpha key,ON/
OFF,Function,Escape,Backspace,and Enterkey.Pleaserefertothe picture
below.
[ENT]The Enterkeyisused toinitiateaprocess orconfirmaselection
made bythe user.
[TAB]The Tab keyisused totogglebetween datafieldsortoplacethe
cursoratpre-determined placesinaprogramming orwordpro-
cessing application.
[FUNC]The Function keyisused toperformalternativekeyfunctions.
[Back space]The Backspacekeyisused toerasepreviouslyinputcharacters.
[ESC]The Escape keywill performthe samefunction astapping the
CANCELbutton orthe Xbutton onthe touchscreen.
ON/OFF When the unitisoff, pressing the On/OFF keywill turnthe uniton.
Alternatively,when the unitison,thiskeymustbe pressed and
helddownforabouttwosecondsinordertoturnthe unitoff.
[Alpha]ThisAlpha keyisused totogglebetweenNumberic&Alpha Mode.

Keying-inCharacters:
Aftertapping the “keyboard”icon,the WindowsCEkeyboardpopsup.Character
inputisthe sameason astandardPC.Simplytap the on-screen button corre-
sponding tothe characteryou wanttoinput.
SoftwareKeyboard(WindowsCEKeyboard)
Sincethe PA960’s keypad allowsinputofnumericcharactersonly,the Windows
CESoftwareprovidesatouchscreen keyboardforinputofothercharacters.The
Windowsbased keyboardreplicatesthe layoutofastandardPCkeyboard.
Closing theKeyboard:
Tap the keyboardicon toclosethe WindowsCEkeyboard.
Moving theKeyboard:
Usethe stylustopointtothe titlebar(the bardisplaying
“Inputpanel”)and then movethe styluswithoutlifting it
fromthe screen.
InternationalCharacterSupport:
Tap the [áü]button toswitchfromthe standardEnglish
keyboardtothe European keyboard.
Opening theWindowsCEKeyboard:
The WindowsCEkeyboardcan be opened bytapping the “keyboard”icon on the
taskbar.(Refertopicture).

If the abovementioned “Plug”icon or“Battery”icon is
displayed,doubletap thisicon tobring up the “Power
Properties”screen.
Or,selectSettings/ControlPanelfromthe Startmenu
and then doubletap the “Power”icon todisplay“Power
Properties”.
Check BatteryStatus:
It isnecessarytocharge the batterywhen “Low”or“Very
Low”aredisplayed inboldcharacters.If “Low”or“Very
Low”arestill displayed aftercharging,pleasecontact
UnitechTechnicalSupport.
The batterymenu itemwill showthe statusofthe main
and backup batteries.Thereare3kindsofstatusindica-
tors—“Good”,“Low”and “VeryLow”.Boldcharacters
