Multiple power sources
This UPS system receives power from more tha o e source. Disco ect all AC a d DC sources before
servici g.
This UPS co tai s several circuits that are e ergized with high DC as well as AC voltages. Check for voltage
with both AC a d DC voltmeters before worki g withi the UPS.
Ge eral Safety for Users
High voltages, similar to those prese t i most large-scle power equipme t, are prese t i the UPS a d battery
circuit breaker box/battery cabi ets. The equipme t has bee desig so that the compo e ts where high
voltages are prese t may o ly be accessed o ly whe the fro t door is ope ed. This results i a higher degree
of security. The compo e ts a d equipme t co form to the IP20 sta dard, with safety shields mou ted i side
the equipme t. After readi g this ma ual, read the labels o the u it a d compo e ts carefully i order to
u dersta d the risks associated with this equipme t.

The u it must be co ected to earth before it is co ected to its mai s i out a d battery power supplies.
The equipme t is fitted with a EMC filter.
The earth leakage curre t is less tha 3000 mA.
Tra sie t a d steady state earth leakage curre ts, which may occur whe the equipme t is started, should be
take i to co sideratio while selecti g i sta ta eous RCCBs a d RCD devices.
RCCBs se sitive to the u idirectio al DC pulse (Class A) a d i se sitive to the tra sie t state curre t pulse
must be selected.
It is also ecessary to take i to accou t that the load earth leakage curre t of the load will be bor e by the
RCCBs or RCDs.
The equipme t must be earthed

the local electrical code of practice.

A dry co tact closure sig al is available for co ectio to a exter al automatic disco ectio device ( ot
supplied) for the UPS. This helps to preve t voltage bei g fed back i to i put li e from the rectifier or bypass
static switch circuit. A label must be positio ed close to all exter al i comi g primary supply disco ect
devices to war the service perso el that the circuits are co ected to the UPS.
The text of the label should be as follows:
“Risk of voltage backfeed: Isolate the UPS, check for hazardous voltage between all terminals, including the
protective earth, prior to working on this circuit”
User-serviceable parts
All equipme t mai te a ce a d servici g procedures i volvi g access to the i ter al parts of the equipme t
require the use of a tool a d should be carried out by qualified a d trai ed professio als o ly. No e of the
user-serviceable parts located behi d the covers require a tool or key for removal.
Battery voltage exceeds 400Vdc
All physical battery mai te a ce a d servici g procedures require the use of a tool/key. Such tasks should be
carried out by qualified a d trai ed perso el o ly.
Take special care whe worki g o the batteries associated with the UPS. O ce they have bee co ected, the
battery termi al voltage exceeds 400 Vdc, which may cause serious i jury or eve death.
Battery ma ufacturers provide detailed i formatio about worki g o or i the vici ity of a large ba k of
battery cells. Read a d adhere to all the precautio s a d measures described by the ma ufacturers. E sure the
co ditio s set out i the Site Preparatio sectio are mai tai ed a d that all the ecessary protective clothi g,
first-aid, a d fire-fighti g equipme t is avialable.

1 Product Description
The Liebert
®
APM system is a ext ge eratio UPS i te ded for use i medium a d large scale computer rooms, data
ce ters a d similar i stallatio s, a d has bee desig ed for maximum e ergy efficie cy a d mi imal footpri t. It is
ideal for medium to large busi esses where space a d flexibility are importa t factors.
Its modular rack co figuratio houses both power modules i side the same UPS cabi et, allowi g for scalability, while
deliveri g the ideal bala ce of high availability, reliability, a d efficie cy, without i creasi g the system footpri t.
A si gle battery ba k ca be dedicated to each UPS, thereby e suri g full redu da cy a d avoidi g a si gle poi t of
failure. Exte ded battery life is further e sured through a temperature compe sated chargi g algorithm, which
preve ts battery damage a d i creases life spa . The Liebert
®
APM provides co ti uous, high quality AC power to
busi ess-critical equipme t such as telecommu icatio a d data processi g equipme t. The Liebert
®
APM series
supplies power free of the disturba ces a d voltage a d freque cy variatio s that typically affect utility power, which
is subjected to brow outs, blackouts, surges a d sags.
I creases i capacity a d redu da cy ca be made both vertically a d horizo tally by addi g power modules to a
existi g rack; alter atively, it may be achieved by co ecti g complete UPS systems i parallel i order create
i stallatio s capable of deliveri g up to 2.4 Mega Watts of active power.
Tha ks to its easy-to-remove power modules, Liebert
®
APM is simple to i stall a d service. The swappable,
module-based architecture greatly reduces mea repair times, a d facilitates mai te a ce operatio s by allowi g
si gle modules to be serviced while the remai i g modules co ti ue to power the load. All the power modules a d
critical compo e ts are easily accessible from the fro t of the u it.
The u it features a large, i tegrated micro-processor-based display, which provides a wide ra ge of i formatio
i cludi g real-time meter readi gs of system curre ts a d voltages, to ame but a few, a d is compatible with HTTP
(read Web), Modbus, a d SNMP protocol commu icatio protocols.

2 Site Preparation
This sectio provides i -depth i formatio about the e viro me tal co ditio s that are required i the area
where the UPS is i stalled, i order to achieve best-i -class results. I order to operate at full capacity, the u it
requires favorable ambie t co ditio s. However, si ce o two sites or i stallatio s are ide tical, this sectio takes
the form a ge eralized, site-or-applicatio a alysis, without focusi g o the specific i dustries or applicatio s
where the APM UPS may be utilized.
Also, si ce, as stated above, each site has its ow characteristics, the followi g sectio s are i te ded purely as a
set of guideli es for the ge eral procedures a d practices that should be adopted by the perso el respo sible
for i stalli g the device. Ideally, the qualified e gi eers a d tech ical perso el will have take the time to study
a d u dersta d the applicable precautio s a d procedures, prior to a alyzi g the specific situatio oat a y give
site
2.1 E viro me tal Co ditio s & Requireme ts
This sectio covers the e viro me tal co ditio s that must be satisfied i order to get the best out of the UPS
system. The e viro me tal co ditio s should meet the requireme ts stated i the product tech ical
specificatio s, especially the ambie t temperature, ve tilatio co ditio s, a d clea li ess of the surrou di gs.
2.1.1 Selecti g the UPS locatio
Prior to i stallatio , it is esse tial to e sure that it is possible to guara tee the ambie t co ditio s ecessary i
order to obtai the best possible results i the selected locatio . The locatio of the UPS o site must be pla ed
a d impleme ted by qualified professio als. The UPS should be positio ed i a cool, dry, i door e viro me t with
adequate ve tilatio . Preferably, the area should be free from dirt, dust or debris, a d the UPS should be placed
o a flat, o -flammable co crete surface. The e viro me t should be free from co ductive powders (such
metallic dust, sulfide, sulfur dioxide, graphite, carbo or co ductive fibers, etc.), acid mist, or other a y co ductive
media (a y stro gly io ized substa ce). The e viro me tal specificatio s should comply with the i ter atio al
sta dards a d specificatio s, withi the pre-defi ed operati g ra ge, as displayed i the followi g table i Table
2.1

The UPS uses forced cooli g by i ter al fa s; cold air e ters the UPS through the ve tilatio grills at the fro t of
the cabi et a d exits the UPS through the ve tilatio grills at the back. Ve tilatio grills are importa t for cooli g
the UPS a d should ot be blocked or obstructed. The rear of the UPS should be positio ed at a mi imum
dista ce of 500mm from the wall to avoid compromisi g UPS heat dissipatio . This reduces the i ter al
temperature of the UPS a d prolo gs the life spa of the system. As a additio , i door extractor fa s may be
i stalled to aid the flow of cooli g air, thereby preve ti g a build up of temperature i the i stallatio
e viro me t. We also recomme d usi g air filters, especially i the prese ce of dust a d/or dirt i the
surrou di g e viro me t.

the batter and not the UPS
If the UPS is operating in Eco Mode, the power consumption will be less than the in Normal mode. An
appropriate air conditioner must be selected, depending on the normal operating mode.
2.1.2 Selecti g the locatio of the Battery
Batteries ge erate qua tities of hydroge a d oxyge as they reach the e d of their discharge cycle; therefore,

the fresh air volume of the battery i stallatio e viro me t must meet the provisio s set out i the
EN50272-2001 sta dards.
E viro me tal co ditio s have a sig ifica t impact battery capacity a d life. The ormal operati g temperature
of the battery is 20° C, if the ambie t temperature exceeds 20° C, battery life will be reduced, whereas, if the
temperature is lower tha 20° C, the battery capacity will be reduced. The acceptable ambie t temperature
ra ge u der ormal operati g co ditio s is betwee 15° C a d 25° C. The ambie t temperature of the battery
should be kept co sta t. Avoid positio i g the batteries close to heat sources or air ve tilatio outlets.
Batteries may be i stalled i the special battery cabi et, which is desig ed to be positio ed close to the UPS.
However, if the batteries are placed o the raised floor, a sustai i g bracket must be co structed a d i stalled
u der the supporti g floor (the same procedure applies to the UPS). I the case of rack-mou ted batteries, or
other i stallatio solutio s where the battery is positio ed at a dista ce from the UPS, the battery circuit breaker
shall be i stalled ear the battery. I such situatio s, the co ecti g cables must be desig ed to be as short as
possible.
2.1.3 Storage
I the eve t that the UPS is ot to be i stalled immediately followi g delivery, is must be stored, i the origi al
packagi g, i a e viro me t where it is protected from excessive humidity a d heat sources (see table i Table
2.1 o the previous page for the storage data).
The storage locatio must be dry a d cool, well ve tilated, clea a d as dust-free as possible.

2.1.4 Cleara ce
The UPS is ot fitted with lateral ve tilatio grills; therefore, o specific cleara ce is required o either side.
However, si ce it may be ecessary tighte the UPS power termi als at regular i tervals, a cleara ce of 1200 mm
should be guara teed at the fro t i order to e able free passage of perso el with the door fully ope . Mai tai
a mi imum cleara ce of 500 mm at the rear of the u it to permit the air fed out of the UPS to circulate freely.

3 Mechanical Installation
The previous sectio deals with the e viro me tal a d ambie t co ditio s ecessary to obtai the maximum
performa ce from the UPS system. This sectio provides a detailed descriptio of the UPS i stallatio procedures.

Ensure tha

the instructions set out in this manual, and on the labels present on the unit are observed prior to installation.
The UPS s stem is suitable for connection to power s stems where the neutral conductor is not connected to earth
(i.e. IT s stems), and TN and TT AC 3 phase, 5 wire (A, B, C, N and PE) distribution s stems (IEC60364-3).
Batter Hazard

Personnel must proceed with extreme care w
hile install
ing the batteries or carr ing out an other operation that
involves handling them. When connecting the batteries, the terminal voltage reaches 320Vdc, which can cause
severe injur , and ma even be fatal to personnel if not handled properl .
The following is a list of safet measures that must be observed while connecting or handling the batteries:
•Wear safet glasses to protect the e es from arcing.
•Remove all metal and conductive items, such as rings and watches.
•Use insulated tools and rubber gloves.
•Replace an batteries that ma be damaged or leak electrol te. When decommissioning batteries, place them in
containers that are capable of withstanding sulfuric acid and dispose of them in accordance with locall applicable
regulations and protocols.
•
If the skin comes into contact with the electrol te, clean and flush it using water immediatel .
3.1 U packi g
The UPS cabi et is heavy a d, therefore, we recomme d usi g a electric fork-lift whe u loadi g a d movi g it to
the i stallatio site. If a electric forklift is used, i sert the ti es of the forklift below the bottom pallet as show i
Figure 3-1. This preve ts the equipme t from falli g over.
Note
The center of gravit of the UPS cabinet is not centered b default. Therefore,
use a fork

over while it is being moved.

3.3 U packi g
The UPS a d battery packages must be u packed u der the guida ce of trai ed, authorized service perso el.
The followi g is a step-by-step procedure for u packi g the u its:
1. Remove the packi g straps a d ho eycomb boards as show i Figure 3-2:

2. Remove both the fro t a d rear kick plates (Figure 3-3 displays the positio of the kick plates):

3. Remove the fixi g bolts at the bottom of the cabi et (See Figure 3-4 for the locatio of the fixi g bolts):

4. If the cabi et is equipped with seismic a chors, they must be removed. The u it is ormally fitted with 8 of
these a chors at the fro t a d rear. O ce these a chors have bee removed, use the forklift to tra sfer the cabi et to
its i stallatio positio .

3.4 I itial I spectio
E sure that the site has bee prepared so that the UPS is i stalled i a e viro me t that co forms to the
requireme ts as defi ed i the product tech ical specificatio s.
The previous sectio covers the UPS a d battery u packi g procedures; the equipme t should be u packed u der
the guida ce of the authorized service perso el a d trai ed e gi eers.
The fi al step i the i itial check-up is to verify the UPS label a d ascertai if everythi g is i place. To co firm that
the UPS complete a d correct, refer to the UPS label attached to the i side of the fro t door, which i dicates the
model, capacity a d mai parameters of the u it.
O ce the i itial check-up is complete, the complete UPS system may be i spected. The UPS system i cludes a
400kVA mai power cabi et, a other 200kVA power cabi et, a d a switch cabi et (i cludi g the bypass co trol
module a d bypass power module). It is fitted with a sta dard mai te a ce switch a d may also be fitted with optio s

such as a rectifier i put switch, bypass i put switch, a d output switch.
3.5 Movi g the Cabi et
Verify that the weight of the UPS does ot exceed the capacity of the lifti g equipme t (see Table 11.3 for UPS weight
i formatio ). Use a forklift or similar lifti g machi e whe movi g the cabi et.

Ensure that the lifting equipment
use
for moving the UPS cabinet
has sufficient weigh bearing
capacit .
Prevent the UPS from sliding while removing it from the shipping pallet. Ensure that there is adequate personnel
and appropriate lifting equipment while moving the shipping pallet.
The center of gravit of the UPS cabinet is high; make sure that it is secured against tipping when moving it.
The cabinet must not be suspended verticall .

Cabling is
another fundamentall important aspect of the installation procedure
. The UPS
uses both top
and
bottom cable access methods. This topic will be discussed in detail in the Electrical Installation section.
3.6 I stalli g a d removi g the Power modules
Whe movi g the cabi et, remove the power modules i order to lower the ce ter of gravity a d reduce the risk of

To i stall the power modules, proceed as follows:
1. The DIP switch o the fro t pa el of the module is used to set the module address. The setti gs ra ge is from 1 to
12, each module must be assig ed a differe t address

1. Set the ready switch o the fro t pa el of the module to the UP positio (the UP positio correspo ds to the
u ready state).
2. Remove the dummy plate, a d the i sert the module i to the i stallatio positio a d push it i to the cabi et.
3. Secure the module to the cabi et via the mou ti g holes o either side of the fro t pa el of the module.
4. Set the ready switch to the Dow positio (the Dow positio correspo ds to the ready state).
