This manual contains information concerning the installation and operation of single UPS modules and parallel systems
of the Vertiv EXS 30kVA~40kVA UPS.
Read this manual thoroughly before installing, using and servicing the UPS.

Warning: high earth eakage current
The unit must be connected to earth before it is connected to its AC mains input and battery power supp ies.
This equipment is fitted with an EMC fi ter.
The earth eakage current ranges from 0 mA to 1000 mA.
Transient and steady state earth eakage currents, which may occur when the equipment is started, shou d be taken into
account when se ecting the instantaneous RCCB or RCD devices.
RCCB devices that are sensitive to unidirectiona DC pu ses (C ass A) and immune to transient state current pu ses must be
se ected.
It is a so necessary to take into account that the oad earth eakage currents wi be carried by the RCCB or RCD.
The equipment must be earthed in comp iance with the oca e ectrica code of practice.
Warning
When se ecting the UPS system upstream distribution protection devices, ensure that they comp y with the specifications
indicated in 3.1.4 , and with the oca e ectrica regu ations.
Warning: back-feed protection
This UPS is fitted with a dry contact for use with an externa automatic disconnecting device (not supp ied) in order to prevent
the UPS vo tage from being fed back to the input termina s through the rectifier or bypass static switch circuit. A abe must be
p aced on or near the a externa primary input supp y disconnecting devices to warn service personne that the circuit is
connected to a UPS. The text of the abe must have the fo owing meaning: Risk of vo tage back-feed! Iso ate the UPS, then
check for hazardous vo tages between a termina s, inc uding the protective earth, before working on this circuit.

Genera safety precautions (For users)
Like other types of arge power equipment, the UPS and battery circuit breaker box/battery cabinet contain high vo tages.
This equipment meets the IP20 standard, and other safety pane s are fitted inside the equipment.
The UPS may be operated in comp ete safety, provided the genera instructions and the steps recommended in this manua
are fo owed.
Mu tip e power inputs (For users)
This UPS system receives power from more than one source. A DC and AC power sources must be disconnected before
servicing.
This UPS inc udes severa circuits that are energized by high AC as we as DC vo tages. Check for vo tage with both AC and
DC vo tmeters before working inside the UPS.

the recommendations concerning oca environmenta conditions and the provision of protective c othing, first aid and
fire-fighting faci ities.
Warning
When the interna fuse of the UPS is damaged, it must be rep aced with a fuse having the same e ectrica parameters by
qua ified personne .
Important
The area housing the communication board contains static sensitive components, therefore it is necessary to adopt a the
appropriate ESD protection measures before accessing this area.
Warning
In order to satisfy the conditiona short circuit current rating (Icc = 10kA symmetrica rms), the specifications of the upstream
breakers must satisfy the requirements set out in the Standard IEC 60947.
Warning

Chapter 1 Overview
Chapter 1 Overview
Developed by Vertiv, the Liebert EXS 30kVA and 40kVA UPS (UPS for short) is an intelligent, on-line UPS system ith
sine ave output that provides reliable, high-quality AC po er for precision instrument applications. The UPS is
available in a to er configuration and is ideal for supplying AC po er to small scale computer centres, net orks,
communication systems, automatic control systems and precision instruments.
This section introduces the UPS features, design concept, operating principle, state and operating mode, and
specifications.
1.1 Feature
The UPS features are as follo s:
 Unity po er factor for improved po er supply quality and enhanced UPS load capacity.
 On-line double conversion efficiency up to 96% and ECO efficiency up to 99%, providing more efficient
products for the customer
 High po er density, small footprint, simple to move and install.
 Up to 4 units may be connected in parallel, guaranteeing enhanced po er supply reliability.
 High input po er factor, ide input voltage range, and output immune to grid interference, thus suitable for use
in areas ith unstable mains supply
 Full digital control and hard are design platforms for maximum adaptability to unstable mains supply
conditions and load impact
 Flexible battery configuration: internal battery (32 blocks by default), external battery (26 to 40 blocks)
 The heavy-duty battery charger ith maximum charging current of 12.5A built into the po er module provides
customers ith a fast charging option.
 The innovative design of the layout and the entire po er conditioning hole process greatly enhance the
reliability of the product
 The operation and display panel features a colourful LCD that provides intuitive information about the UPS
operating state and parameters
 The UPS may also be operated in ECO po er supply and smart sleep modes, enabling you to maximise energy
savings
1.2 De ign Concept
1.2.1 Sy tem De ign
This section introduces the orking principle of the single module UPS. The UPS adopts AC-DC-AC conversion (as
sho n in Figure 1-1). The first stage conversion (AC-DC) uses a three-phase, high frequency rectifier to convert the
three-phase input voltage into a stable DC bus voltage. The second stage conversion (DC-AC) uses a three-phase,
high frequency inverter to convert the DC bus voltage into the three-phase AC output voltage.

1. The UPS consists of mains input (main and bypass), rectifier/PFC, battery charger, inverter, bypass, battery and
output.
2. When the mains is normal, the rectifier and inverter ork together to supply the loads and charge the battery.
3. When the mains supply is outside normal limits, the rectifier/PFC circuit boosts the battery voltage and supplies it to
the inverter. The inverter then converts it into pure sine ave AC po er, hich is then fed to the load. If the battery
voltage falls to end of discharge (EOD) voltage and the mains has not yet returned ithin the normal limits, the UPS
ill shut do n (if the system uses separate bypass configuration and the bypass is normal, the system ill transfer to
bypass). The battery EOD voltage is pre-set. When the mains is abnormal, the battery ill continue to supply the UPS
until the battery voltage reaches to EOD level, hereupon the UPS shuts do n; this period is kno n as the 'Backup
Time'. The duration of the backup time depends on the battery capacity and the loads.
4. After the mains returns ith normal limits, the UPS ill revert automatically from Battery mode to Normal mode, and
the rectifier and inverter ork together to supply the loads and charge the battery.
1.2.2 Bypa
Thanks to the intelligent control function provided by the ‘Automatic Bypass S itch’ (as sho n in Figure 1-1), the loads
may be supplied either by the inverter or the bypass. Under normal operating conditions, the loads are supplied by the
inverter, in hich case the automatic inverter s itch on the inverter side is closed. In the event of an overload (after the
overload delay period has elapsed) or inverter failure, the automatic inverter s itch is opened, and the 'Automatic
Bypass S itch' module transfers the loads automatically to the bypass.
In the normal operating state, in order to guarantee uninterrupted transfer bet een inverter and bypass, the inverter
output must be fully synchronized ith the bypass.
Therefore, hen the bypass frequency is ithin the synchronization range, the inverter control circuit ill synchronize
the inverter output frequency ith the bypass frequency and phase.
The UPS is also equipped ith a manual maintenance bypass s itch that can be used to shut the UPS do n during
maintenance. In this condition, the bypass ill supply the critical loads directly via the maintenance bypass.
Note
When the load is supplied by the bypass or maintenance bypass, the po er supply quality ill not be guaranteed.

1.2.3 Sy tem Control Principle
Normal operation
Normal mode: In this condition, the UPS mains input supply is ithin normal limits, the rectifier and inverter operate
normally, the load is supplied by the inverter, the battery circuit breaker is closed, and the battery is in the stable
floating charge state.
(Parallel System) Note: As the individual UPS module outputs are connected in parallel, the system checks that the
inverter control circuits are perfectly synchronized ith one another and ith the bypass in terms of both frequency
and phase, and that the output voltages are the same. The current supplied to the load is automatically divided among
the UPS units. A arning message appears hile synchronization is in progress.
Mains abnormal
When the mains fails or is abnormal, the rectifier ill stop orking automatically, and the system ill transfer to battery
output (through the inverter). The length of the operation time in battery mode depends on the load and the battery
capacity. During this period, if the battery voltage falls to the EOD level before the mains supply has returned ithin
normal limits, the inverter ill stop orking automatically, and the UPS operator control and display panel ill display
the corresponding alarm messages. If the system uses separate bypass configuration and the bypass is normal, the
system ill transfer to bypass.
Mains recovery
When the mains returns ithin normal limits ithin the permissible time, the rectifier ill start automatically and supply
the load and charge the battery again. This means that the po er supply to the load ill not be interrupted.
Disconnecting the battery
To disconnect the external battery from the UPS system during maintenance, use the external isolating s itch. In this
condition, the battery backup function ill not be available in the event of a mains failure, but none of the other UPS
functions and performance ill be affected.
UPS module failure
In the event of an inverter failure, or if the output fuse blo s, the load ill be transferred automatically to the bypass,
and the output po er supply ill not be interrupted. Should this condition occur, please contact your local Vertiv Tech
Co. Ltd service centre for technical support.
(Parallel System) In the event of a fault affecting an individual UPS module, it ill be excluded automatically from the
parallel system. If the system is still capable of providing the po er required by the load, the remaining modules ill
continue to supply the load ithout interruptions. If the remaining modules are no longer capable of fulfilling the po er
requirements, the load ill be transferred automatically to the bypass.
Overload
If the inverter is overloaded or the inverter current remains outside the specifications (refer to Table 1-1 and Table 3-1)
longer than the specified time, the load ill automatically transfer to the bypass ithout any interruption in the po er
supply to the load. If both the overload and the current are reduced to a level ithin the specified range, then the load
ill be re-transferred to the inverter. In the event of an output short circuit, the load ill be transferred to the bypass,
and the inverter ill shut do n. Five minutes later, the inverter ill start up automatically. If the short circuit is removed
at this point, the load ill be transferred back to the inverter. The transfer is determined primarily by the specifications
of the system protection device.
In both the situations listed above, the UPS operator control and display panel ill display the corresponding alarm
messages.
(Parallel System) The control logic system constantly monitors load requirements and controls the po er supplied by
each UPS module. In the event that an overload condition persists for longer than a pre-set period, the load ill be
transferred to the bypass, if the number of active modules is unable to satisfy load requirements. The load returns to
the inverter if the po er is reduced to a value that can be sustained by the number of active modules in the system.

Maintenance bypass
The UPS is equipped ith a second bypass circuit, kno n as the maintenance bypass, hich provides a safe orking
environment for the engineers to carry out regular maintenance or repair the UPS system, hile providing unregulated
mains supply to the loads. The maintenance bypass can be activated manually selected by closing the maintenance
bypass s itch, and disconnected by setting the s itch to OFF.
Warning
If the UPS system consists of t o or more UPS modules, and the load exceeds the capacity of the individual UPS modules, do not
use the internal maintenance bypass s itch.
1.2.4 UPS Power Supply Switch Configuration
The UPS is equipped ith four s itches: main input s itch Q1, bypass input s itch Q2, maintenance bypass s itch Q3,
and output s itch Q5.
Figure 1-2 illustrates the block diagram of the UPS module. The UPS is available in separate bypass ( here the bypass
is supplied by a separate mains input source) or common input configuration. If the system is installed in the common
input configuration, copper shorting bars are connected bet een the UPS rectifier and bypass input lines so that the
bypass input s itch (Q2) and main input s itch (Q1) are be linked together. To install the system in separate bypass
configuration, simply remove the common input configuration input shorting bars.
During the normal UPS operation, all s itches should be closed, ith the exception of the maintenance bypass s itch
Q3.

1.2.5 Battery Circuit Breaker (BCB)
The external battery shall be connected to the UPS via the BCB. The BCB box is an option that must be installed close
to the battery. The BCB is closed manually and is fitted ith a shunt tripping coil. When the system is faulty and it is
necessary to disconnect the BCB, the UPS control circuit ill send a signal to the shunt tripping coil so as to trip the
BCB. It also features a magnetic trip function for overload and short circuit protection.
1.3 Parallel Sy tem
Up to four UPS modules may be parallel-connected to form a parallel system and increase the system capacity and
reliability. The load is shared equally bet een the UPS modules connected in parallel.

Also, t o UPS modules or parallel systems may be used to form a dual bus system. Each parallel system has an
independent output. The LBS cable or LBS device is used to synchronise the outputs, guaranteeing seamless load
transfer bet een the t o parallel systems or individual modules via the STS device.
1.3.1 Parallel Sy tem Feature
1. The hard are and soft are of a parallel system are identical to those of the individual modules. The parallel system is
configured by modifying the respective settings in the configuration soft are.
2. Parallel cables are connected in a ring, providing both system reliability and redundancy.
3. The total load of the parallel system may be queried via the LCD on each UPS.
1.3.2 Parallel Sy tem Requirement
A group of paralleled modules behave as if it ere one large UPS ith the advantage of providing increased reliability.
To ensure that all modules are utilised equally and to comply ith relevant iring rules, the follo ing requirements
apply:
1. All UPS modules must be of the same series and must be connected to the same bypass source.
2. The bypass and main input source N line must be connected to the same neutral line terminal.
3. If any RCD devices are installed they must be set-up appropriately and located upstream of the common neutral line
input terminal. Alternatively, the device must monitor the protective earth current of the system. Refer to Warning: high
earth leakage current before Contents.
4. For parallel system consisting of t o or more UPS modules, the (optional) bypass load sharing inductors should be
selected.
1.4 UPS State And Operating Mode
For information about the LED indicators mentioned in this section, refer to 4.1.1 LED In icators.
The operating modes are as follo s:
 Normal mode
 Battery mode
 Bypass mode
 Maintenance bypass mode
 ECO mode
 Parallel redundancy mode (system expansion)
 Frequency converter mode
 LBS mode
Normal mode
When the mains input is ithin normal limits, it is processed by the rectifier and inverter in order to supply the load ith
voltage and frequency-stabilized po er, hile the battery charger recharges the battery. This condition is kno n as
Normal operating mode.
In Normal mode, the run indicator (green) is on, the alarm indicator is off, and the buzzer is silenced.

Battery mode
In the event of a mains failure or if the mains voltage is outside tolerance, the rectifier and internal charger ill stop
running, and the battery ill supply po er to the load through the inverter. When the mains po er supply is restored,
the system ill re-transfer automatically to normal operating mode ithout any manual intervention, and ith no
interruption in the po er supply to the load.
In Battery mode, the run indicator (green) is on, the alarm indicator (yello ) is on and the buzzer beeps at one second
intervals. The 'Current' page on the LCD ill indicate 'On Battery'.
Note
1. The battery has been fully charged before delivery. Ho ever, some loss of capacity is inevitable during transportation and
storage. Therefore, it is important to charge the battery for eight hours before operating the UPS for the first time to ensure it is
capable of providing adequate backup time.
2. The battery cold start function may also be used to start the UPS in Battery mode (providing it is fully charged) in the event of
a mains failure. This means that the battery po er can be used independently to improve the system availability, to a certain
extent.

If the overload duration is exceeded, or in the event of an inverter or rectifier failure hile the UPS is in normal
operating mode, the UPS s itches to Bypass mode, so that the load is supply by the bypass source, hich is derived
directly from the mains input. If the rectifier is still operative, the battery charger ill continue to charge the battery.
In Bypass mode, the run indicator (green) is on, the alarm indicator (yello ) is on and the buzzer beeps at one second
intervals. The 'Current' page on the LCD ill indicate 'On Bypass'.

Maintenance Bypass mode
If it is necessary to service the UPS or carry out maintenance ork on it, you may use the manual maintenance bypass
s itch to transfer the load to maintenance bypass, ith no interruption in the po er supply to the load. Each UPS
module is fitted ith a maintenance bypass s itch, hich is rated for the full load capacity of a single module.

In the event of UPS malfunctions or abnormal operation, contact your nearest Vertiv branch office or local service centre.
NEVER attempt to repair the UPS yourself, as this may result in injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment.
ECO mode
If ECO mode is selected, all the po er s itches and the battery s itches, except for the maintenance bypass s itch,
are closed, and the system selects the bypass as the preferred source of po er for the load, in order to save energy.
When the bypass supply frequency and voltage are ithin normal limits (adjustable), the load is po ered by the
bypass, ith the inverter on stand-by; hen the bypass voltage and/or frequency is outside these pre-defined and
adjustable limits, the system ill transfer to the inverter output; the transfer time from bypass to inverter is less than 5
ms. In this mode, the system can charge the battery normally.
ECO mode is an energy-saving operating mode. When using the UPS to supply equipment that is not sensitive to
mains po er quality, ECO mode may be used to reduce po er losses.

1. In ECO mode, if the bypass fails or the bypass voltage goes outside normal limits, the UPS ill revert to Normal mode (providing

Parallel redundancy mode (system expansion)
For increased capacity or higher reliability, or both, the outputs of multiple UPS modules may be programmed to be
connected together in direct parallel mode, hile a built-in parallel controller in each UPS module guarantees
automatic load sharing. The parallel system may consist of up to four UPS modules. For the operating principle diagram
of parallel redundancy mode, see Figure 6-1.

Frequency converter mode
The UPS may be operated as a frequency converter, providing a stable output at a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. The input
frequency may vary bet een 40Hz and 70Hz. If this operating mode is selected, the maintenance bypass s itch is
opened in order to disable bypass operation, hile the battery is used only if it is necessary to operate the UPS in
battery mode.
LBS mode
A dual bus system consists of t o independent UPS systems, each containing one or more parallel UPS modules. The
dual bus system provides high reliability, hich makes it suitable for use ith loads having multiple input terminals. In
the case of single-input loads, an STS may be installed to po er the load. For the LBS mode operation principle
diagram, see Figure 6-5 and Figure 6-6.
1.5 Battery Management
The follo ing battery management functions are set-up by the service engineer using the Vertiv configuration
soft are.
1.5.1 Normal Function
1. Constant current boost charge
Uses a constant current ( ithin battery charging limit) to charge the battery. This function can be used for fast battery
capacity recovery. It is also possible to set-up the charging current.
2. Constant voltage boost charge
Uses a constant voltage to charge the battery. This function can be used for fast battery capacity recovery. In the case
of VRLA batteries, the maximum boost charge voltage should not exceed 2.4V/cell.
3. Float charge
This charging method is used for maintaining the battery at full capacity. The float charge voltage is generally lo . This
function can be used to compensate for capacity loss due to battery self-discharging, and to recover battery capacity.
In the case of VRLA batteries, the float charge voltage should be bet een 2.2V/cell and 2.3V/cell.
4. Automatic transfer to float charge
When the charge current is less than the 'Threshold of Equalize Charge to Float Charge’ value, or 0.5 A, the charger ill
transfer automatically from boost charge to float charge. When the boost charge time exceeds the 'Equalize Charge
Protect Time Limit', the charger ill be forcibly transferred to float charge in order to protect the battery.
5. Float charge temperature compensation (optional)
This function must be used together ith the battery temperature detection device. The VERTIV battery temperature
sensor is a standard option.
6. EOD protection
When the battery voltage falls to the EOD level, the the battery converter shuts do n automatically and the battery is
inhibited in order to avoid further battery discharge. The EOD voltage may be set to bet een 1.60V/cell and 1.90V/cell
(VRLA).
7. Battery lo pre- arning time
The battery lo pre- arning time may be set to bet een 3min and 60min. The default setting is 5min.
8. Maximum battery discharge time
When the battery is discharged at lo current levels for extended periods, it ill result in excessive discharge and may
even cause irreparable damage, for this reason it is essential to set-up a maximum battery discharge time in order to
protect it. The time limit value is set-up by the service engineer using the VERTIV setting soft are.
9. Maximum boost charge protection time
To protect against the battery overcharge damage caused by long time boost charge, it is essential to set-up a
protection time a protect time limit The time limit value is set-up by the service engineer using the VERTIV setting
soft are.

1.5.2 Advanced Function
The UPS includes a battery maintenance test function. At periodic intervals, 20% of the rated capacity of the battery
ill be discharged automatically, provided the current three-phase load exceeds 20% of the nominal UPS capacity. If
the load is less than 20%, the automatic discharge cannot be executed. The test interval may be set to bet een 30 and
360 days. The battery maintenance test function may be disabled via the Vertiv configuration soft are.
Conditions: Battery at float charge for at least 5h, load equal to 20% ~ 100% of rated UPS capacity.
Trigger: Automatically, or manually by activating the battery maintenance test command on the LCD.
Interval: 30 ~ 360 days (default setting: 60 days).
The UPS also includes a battery capacity self-test function: Test the battery activity and residual capacity, and
evaluate the battery quality at regular intervals, implementing any measures that may be necessary. The battery
capacity self-test is initiated by user via the operator control and display panel. During this test, the battery ill be
discharged continuously until it reaches the under-voltage shut-do n threshold. After the self-test is finished, the
system ill update the battery curve table. The capacity self-test is a standalone command and the results are not
saved. During the capacity self-test, if the battery maintenance is required, the system ill generate an audible/visual
alarm and the corresponding reports.
Conditions: System load bet een 20% and 100% of nominal rating, battery float charge for at least 5 hours, generator
not connected, system currently in float charge state.
Trigger: Start up via the LCD.
Note:
1. The battery is discharged continuously until it reaches the under-voltage shut-do n threshold, after hich is
s itches to the recharging state. After the capacity self-test is finished, the system ill update the battery curve table.
2. The user may interrupt the capacity self-test manually via the LCD.
3. The duration of the battery capacity self-test discharge time must be at least 6 minutes, other ise the self-learning
period may be insufficient to update the battery curve.
1.5.3 Battery Temperature Compen ation
The UPS system also features a battery charge temperature compensation function. When the ambient temperature is
increased, the DC bus voltage ( hich charges the battery) ill be reduced correspondingly to provide optimal charging
voltage for the battery, thus prolonging the battery service life time.
This function must be used together ith the Vertiv battery temperature detection device (standard option).
1.6 Battery Protection
The follo ing battery protection functions are set-up by the service engineer using the VERTIV configuration soft are.
Battery lo pre- arning
The battery lo pre- arning occurs before the EOD. After this pre- arning, the battery should still have sufficient
capacity to continue discharging at full load for an additional 3 minutes. The time can be set to bet een 3min and
60min.
EOD protection
When the battery voltage falls to the EOD level, the battery converter shuts do n automatically. In the case or VRLA
batteries,the EOD voltage may be set to bet een 1.60V/cell and 1.90V/cell.
BCB alarm
The BCB alarm is generated hen the external BCB is opened, if the (optional) Vertiv BCB is fitted.
The external battery must be connected to the UPS via the BCB. The BCB is closed manually and tripped by the UPS
control circuit.

Chapter 2 Mechanical In tallation
This section provides a brief introduction to the UPS mechanical installation procedures, including the precautions,
initial inspection before installation, environmental requirement, mechanical requirement and installation diagram.
2.1 Precaution
No t o sites are the same, therefore this section provides general guidelines, procedures and methods for installation
engineers, ho shall adapt the installation to meet the actual conditions.
Warning: professional installation required
1. The UPS should be installed by an qualified engineer in accordance ith the information provided in this section. In the event of
any problems, contact your local Vertiv service centre immediately.
2. The UPS must NOT be s itched on ithout the approval of the commissioning engineer.
3. For all equipment or items not covered by this section, refer to the specific mechanical and/or electrical installation instructions
provided ith such items.
Warning
The UPS may be connected to IT, TN and TT AC, 3-phase 5- ire (A, B, C, N, PE) distribution systems (IEC60364-3).
Warning: battery hazards
Take special care hen installing batteries. When connecting batteries, potentially fatal DC voltages may be present on the
battery terminals.
1. Al ays ear safety glasses to protect the eyes from being damaged by arcing.
2. Remove all the metal items, including finger rings, atch, etc.
3. Use tools ith insulated handles.
4. Wear rubber gloves.
5. If batteries are damaged or leak electrolyte they must be replaced. Place the battery into the container that can ithstand
sulphuric acid and dispose of it according to the local regulations.
6. In the event of contact ith electrolyte, ash the affected are ith abundant clean ater immediately.
2.2 Tran portation
Rail and sea shipping are the recommended transportation methods. If road transportation is unavoidable, choose
roads that are less bumpy in order to protect the equipment.
The UPS cabinet is heavy (see Table 10-3 for eight information). We recommend using mechanical equipment such
as an electric forklift to unload and move the equipment to the place closest to the installation site. If an electric forklift
is used, insert the forks belo the bottom pallet (as sho n in Figure 2-1) to prevent the equipment from tipping over.
Warning
DO NOT attempt to move the UPS by its brackets.
