1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Z3-HE2160-RPS is a compact OEM rapid production starter kit supporting HEVC/H.265 encode in
resolutions up to 1080p at 60 fps. The hardware consists of one Z3-HE1080-MOD-xx System on Module card
with one Z3-HE1080-APP-0x application board. The software consists of Linux kernel and application
packages to allow users to develop their own advanced multimedia applications.
The Z3-HE2160-MOD-xx is a compact OEM module which supports H.265 and H.264 High Profile encode at
up to 2160p30.

The Z3-HE2160-APP-01 is an application board design for rapid prototyping of the Z3-HE2160-MOD-xx and is
included in the Z3-HE2160-RPS. This application board uses the I/O expansion capability of the module to
implement additional functions not present in the module itself. This application board has one HDMI input,
one composite input and one 3G-SDI input as well as ports for Gigabit Ethernet, USB, Micro SD and RS-232
serial.
The Z3-HE2160-RPS software is based on the Linux OS. The kit comes with all of the low-level resources such
as the Linux kernel, u-boot, tool chain and starter file system pre-integrated and configured. The software
bundle also contains tools to allow the development of high-level applications using hardware-accelerated
video processing. Those customers that license the optional source code package can also receive source
code for Z3’s demonstration applications, providing an ideal starting point for custom applications.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
2.1 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section Error! Reference source not found.,
“Error! Reference source not found.,” on page Error! Bookmark not defined.. This section describes
how to quickly stream UDP, RTP, RTSP or RTMP as well as record to a USB storage device. Enabling Pro-
MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC), Zixi Feeder™ or KLV data are also described.
2.2 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
There are several options for updating the firmware on your RPS by following the instructions in Section
7.0: “RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD”, on page 14.
2.3 If You are Ready to Start Development
Details on how to untar and build the code can be found in Section 5.0: “ ,” on page Error! Bookmark
not defined.. A brief overview of the code itself can be found in Section 6.0: “CODE OVERVIEW,” on
page 12.
Details on how to set up your system to access the code you have built can be found in Section 7.0:
“RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD”, on page 14.

5.0 UNTARRING AND BUILDING THE RPS CODE
5.1 Preparing the Linux Environment
Prior to building the Z3 code, certain modules are required. In Ubuntu 16.04 or later, the following
command can be used to get the required modules:
sudo apt-get install build-essential bison flex mtd-utils liblzo2-dev uuid-dev
zlib1g-dev libpcre3-dev autoconf autoconf-archive automake libtool libtool-
doc libc6-dev lynx xutils-dev libncurses5-dev yodl
In Fedora, the command would be:
sudo yum install bison flex mtd-utils mtd-utils-ubi lzo-devel libuuid-devel
pcre-devel automake autoconf libtool
If you are running a 64-bit OS, it may be necessary to install some 32-bit libraries for the cross-compiling
toolchain. You can determine whether your OS is 64-bit by using the “uname –p” command. A 64-bit OS
will return “x86_64,” while a 32-bit OS will return “i386”, “i586”, or “i686”.
For 64-bit Ubuntu, you can get the necessary libraries by typing:
# sudo apt-get install gcc-multilib
# sudo dpkg –-add-architecture i386
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install libc6-dev-i386 libncurses5-dev:i386 libstdc++6:i386
zlib1g:i386 libmnl-dev libmnl0 pkg-config pkgconf cmake
For 64-bit Fedora, you can type:
# sudo yum install glibc.i686
For Ubuntu change shell from dash to bash:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash
Then select “No” when it asks if “dash” should be the system shell (this will cause /bin/sh to be linked
to “bash” instead)
5.2 Making the Directories and Running the Make Script
The software provided will allow you to re-create the pre-installed software of the Z3-HE2160-RPS
starting from the included code.
On a PC running Linux, create a directory where the released materials are going to be located:
# mkdir /home/z3/he2160
Copy the released tar archive to that directory (note: the name may slightly vary).
# cp SW-CH1-00920-01_HE2160-RPS-20180803.tar.bz2 /home/z3/he2160
Untar the archive (name of tar file may slightly vary):
# tar -xvjf SW-CH1-00920-01_HE2160-RPS-20180803.tar.bz2

*Note: Untarring takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Go into the directory just created and run the build script (directory name may slightly vary):
# cd z3-hi3519v101-HE2160-RPS-20180803
# ./makeall
*Note: Building can take around 15-20 minutes. You will also need to type in the sudo password a few
times.
The outcome of the build process should be newly created image files in the images directory. You can
confirm this by doing the following:
# ls –al images/
The result should be something like the following. Note that actual filenames, dates, and times will
differ.

6.0 CODE OVERVIEW
Once you have untarred the code, you will see the following top-level directories:
build-tools Config files and scripts for building the codebase
hevc_sdk The encoder SDK code
factory Factory testing scripts (the user can disregard these)
sysapps Various supporting applications
z3apps Z3 demo application code and scripts
The Z3 application code that comes with the Z3-HE2160-RPS is run from the serial_menu.lua script in
z3apps/hevc_app/scripts/. This code calls the /opt/mcsenc binary, which initializes and runs the encoder.
This binary is built from the z3apps/hevc_app/encode_app directory. The code for the binary resides in
z3apps/hi35xx_app/encode_app. The z3apps/hevc_app directory is described in more detail in the next
section.
6.1 The z3apps/rdk Directory
There are three main subdirectories: encode_app, hevc_audio, and scripts
6.1.1 encode_app
This directory contains the code for the encoder application
The file mcsenc.cpp is responsible for setting the output mode of the encoder. Output to file, rtp,
and MPEG2-TS are handled here.
6.1.2 hevc_audio
This directory contains the code for the audio encode API.
6.1.3 scripts
This directory contains the control scripts for the serial user interface and HTTP-based web user
interface.
6.2 Z3 Application Overview
6.2.1 Application Names and Locations

Application source code is available under a separate license agreement. For customers that have
licensed it, the application source code can be found mainly in:

The top-level file for the menu-driven application is mcsenc.cpp.

7.0 RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD
To take the image files you built in Section Error! Reference source not found. and run them on the RPS,
follow these instructions.
z3-hiimage.img can be found in PRJROOT/imgaes.
7.1 Via SD Card
(1) Obtain an SD card. You will need to have an SD card reader to access the SD card.

(2) Format the SD card.
(a) Plug the SD card into the SD card reader on your Windows PC.
(b) When the device is mounted, in the filesystem window right click on the device and select
“Format”.
(c) In the format window select the default filesystem from the “File system” dropdown.
This will be either FAT32 or FAT. It is important to select the default.
(d) Select the “Default allocation size” option from the “Allocation unit size” dropdown
menu.
(e) Select the “Quick Format” check box and click “Start”.

(3) Once the formatting is complete, you will see a pop up window. Click “OK”.
(4) Copy your desired .img file to the SD card using your file browser.
(5) Once the copy is complete, eject the SD card from your PC.
(6) Verify the Z3-HE2160-RPS is powered off.
(7) Insert the SD card and power on the system.
(8) If you are monitoring the serial connection, you will see the following:

(9) The process will take about three minutes to complete. The status LED’s will turn green once the
update is complete. The SD card can be removed at this point, and the device can be found on
Zfinder.
7.2 Via User Interface
(1) Run the Web Interface (See Section Error! Reference source not found. or Error! Reference source
not found.).
(2) Click the “Update device firmware” button from the System Setup tab.

(3) This brings you to the update image screen. In this screen, click on the “Choose File”button.
(4) This brings you to the File Selection Screen. Navigate to the .img file to update with and click
“Open”.
(5) Click on “Upload and Update”.
(6) You will see screens stating that the image is being uploaded and that the flash is being updated.
After about one minute, you should see the main menu again.
(7) Your encoder is now updated.
7.3 USB Update Process
(1) Format USB stick to its default format.
(2) Place an img. file in the root directory of the USB stick.
(3) Insert the USB stick into the encoder before powering it on.
(4) Connect via serial console, and interrupt boot at U-Boot. This can be done by hitting the space bar
immediately after powering on.
(5) In U-Boot, you can run the command:
z3updater 0 1
(6) This USB file read many take between 3-5 minutes, and an additional 1-2 minutes for NAND writes.
8.0 APPENDIX B: Troubleshooting
Problem: Web browser user interface does not come up.
- Is the Ethernet cable plugged in to the encoder solidly (do you see the link light)?
- Do the encoder IP address and the PC IP address have the same first two values (or, if netmask is
set to 255.255.255.0, the same first three values)?
- Do the encoder and the PC have the same netmask? (Default value is 255.255.0.0)
-You can check the netmask of the PC by typing ifconfig in Linux.
- Are all firewalls on the network turned off?
-Try connecting the PC directly to the board without any routers, etc.

- Can the PC and target board see each other on the network?
-Try pinging the encoder IP address from the PC.
-Try pinging the PC from the encoder.
Problem: Do not see video in VLC (UDP).
- Does the IP address set in “Dest Address” equal the IP address of the PC running VLC?
- Does the port number in “Dest Port” equal the value entered in the URL for VLC?
- Was “@” included in the UDP address for VLC?
- Is the PC fast enough for 1080p decode on VLC?
- Does the PC have enough DDR to handle 1080p decode on VLC?
- Is VLC version 1.1x or later?
Problem: Do not see video in VLC (RTP).
- One of the provided SDP files is required. Is the correct SDP file being used?
- H265(HEVC) video + AACHE audio: use the SDP file entitled “z3-netra_h265_aache.sdp”
- H265(HEVC) video + AACHEv2 audio: use the SDP file entitled “z3-netra_h265_aachev2.sdp”
- H264(AVC) + no audio: use the SDP file entitled “z3-netra_h264.sdp”
- Is “Dest Port” set to 5004?
Problem: Do not see video in VLC (RTSP).
- Is the version of VLC 2.1.5 or newer?
Problem: Software update by SD card is not properly updating the unit.
- Is your SD card included on the list of verified cards?
- Is your SD card formatted properly?
- Is the card formatted to FAT or FAT32, whichever was the default option?
- When formatting the card, was the “Default allocation size” selected for the “Allocation
unit size” option?
When contacting Z3 Support for additional support, please use the “Download device logs” button on the user interface System
Setup tab to capture logs of any issue you’d like to report and send the resulting file to Z3 Technology.
