1.0 FV2K, FV4K, AND FSDI
The F SERIES comes in three different options:
•the FV2K which encodes and streams up to HD video
•the FV4K which encodes and streams up to 4Kp30 video
•the FSDI which encodes and streams to an SDI solution
This document contains general information for each of these products as well as specified information on
each of their setups and usages. Please be aware of the precautions especially with the KEL cables, and how
you’ll use them correctly. For more information, please contact your account manager.
NOTE ON FV4K-13A:
The FV4K-13A is similar to the FV2K-13A except for in a few specific ways. The FV4K can encode up to 4Kp30
video while the FV2K is made for encoding 1080p60 video. Also on the FV4K, one of the KEL jacks (J5) is
made for an HDMI camera and a new micro-HDMI jack (J10) was added for its input.
2.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The FVXK-13A-RPS is designed for dual camera inspection, surveillance, industrial and UAV applications. The
flexibility of the system allows for a visible camera and an infrared or night vision camera. The hardware
consists of a 2-board set: Encoder and Connector PCB. The system is capable of encoding multiple channels
of H.265 and H.264 video in HD/4K resolutions. The Input board features flexible digital and analog input
ports. The encoder can be configured to stream over IP and simultaneously record to USB or micro SD card.
The FVXK-13A-RPS is available with either software preloaded or with an optional SDK starter kit.

3.1 Supported Resolutions
The FVXK-13A-RPS supports simultaneous output of up to three streams encoded at different resolutions,
frame rates and bitrates. Supported stream resolutions are:
4K (FV4K-13A only), 1080p (2MP), 1280x1024, 720p (1MP), 480p, 576p, 1024x576, 704x576,
640x480, 640x360, 420x380, 352x576, 352x288, 352x240, 320x240, and 320x180
In addition to scaling the resolution, the camera is also capable of scaling down the frame rate to save
bandwidth. Each channel can select from full frame rate, half frame rate, quarter or sixth frame rate.
For example, it is possible to configure a primary stream of 1920x1080 at 60 fps simultaneously with a
secondary stream at 480p at 10 fps.

4.0 QUICK START GUIDE
4.2 Before Attaching A Camera Block
Before connecting a camera block, a thorough review of section 7.0 and section 12.0 is required.
4.3 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 13.0 “RUNNING THE ENCODER” on page
21. This section describes how to quickly stream UDP, RTP, RTSP or RTMP as well as record to a Micro-
SD card. Enabling Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC), Zixi Feeder™or KLV data are also described.
4.4 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
There are several options for updating the firmware on your RPS by following the instructions in Section
15.0: “RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD”, on page 48.
4.5 If You are Ready to Start Development
Details on how to untar and build the code can be found in Section 10.0: ”, on page 15. A brief
overview of the code itself can be found in Section 11.0: “CODE OVERVIEW,” on page 17.
Details on how to set up your system to access the code you have built can be found in Section 15.0:

7.0 UART AND RS-485 PIN-OUTS
The UART interface, connector J5, connects to /dev/ttyS1 (RS232) and /dev/ttyS4 (RS485/RS422). See
figure below:

8.0 THERMAL MANAGEMENT
The Z3-FVXK-13A-RPS system is comprised of a CPU module board, one Application board which contains the
hardware implementation of the input and output circuits and one Connector board which contains the
major I/O jacks such as Ethernet and power jacks.
The system requires that heat is removed from the CPU chip on the module board and from the FPGA chip
on the Application board and dissipated into the environment in order to maintain its operating temperature
specification. It may be necessary to also remove heat from other components on the module or application
boards depending on the environmental requirements of the final application. Keeping the CPU and FPGA
chips within their allowed operating temperatures is critical for the operation of the encoder system.
The system designer is responsible for implementing the cooling mechanisms necessary for any given
application.

The Z3-FVXK-13A-RPS board set as provided from Z3 Technology includes a block of aluminum which is
thermally coupled to the CPU chip. This aluminum block is meant to be attached to a heat sink such as a
metal enclosure or other material capable of removing heat from the system.
Note that the aluminum block is a good thermal conductor but is a poor thermal sink. The aluminum block is
not efficient at radiating the heat from the CPU to air, it must be thermally connected to a device that can
dissipate the thermal energy.
9.0 UNTARRING AND BUILDING THE SAMPLE CODE
BEFORE you begin untarring the code, download the tools you need for compiling:
sudo apt-get install -y cmake automake libtool yodl libmnl-dev libmnl0 pkg-
config liblzo2-dev uuid-dev libpcre3-dev libarchive-zip-perl python
sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash
Then select "No" when it asks if "dash" should be the system shell (this will cause /bin/sh to be linked to
"bash" instead)
9.1 Making the Directory and untarring the RPS code
The software provided will allow you to re-create the pre-installed software of the FV2K-13A starting
from the included code.
On a PC running Linux, create a directory where the released materials are going to be located:
# mkdir /home/z3/fv2k-13a
Copy the released tar archive to that directory (note: the name may slightly vary).
# cp SW-A01-01026-03_20220303.tar.bz2 /home/z3/fv2k-13a
Untar the archive (name of tar file may slightly vary):
# tar -xvjf SW-A01-01026-03_20220303.tar.bz2
*Note: Untarring may take up to 10 minutes.
Go into the directory just created and run the build script (directory name may slightly vary):
# cd z3-AMB-2022_04_06-20220406

The Linux build environment must Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 20.04.
9.3 Running the Make Script
Go into the root directory
# cd /home/z3/fv2k-13a/-AMB-2022_04_06-20220406
# ./makeall.sh
*Note: Building can take around 45 minutes.
The outcome of the build process should be newly created image files in the image’s directory. You can
confirm this by doing the following:
# cd scripts/z3-img
# ls -alt
The output will look like the following note that filenames, dates, and times will differ. See section 15.0
for installation methods.

11.0 RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD
To take the image files you built in Section 9.0 and run them on the RPS, follow these instructions.
11.7 Via User Interface
(1) Run the Web Interface (See Section 13.6 or 14.1).
(2) Click the “Update device firmware” button from the System Setup tab.
(3) This brings you to the update image screen. In this screen, click on the “Choose File”button.
(4) This brings you to the File Selection Screen. Navigate to the .img file to update with and click
“Open”.
(5) Click on “Upload and Update”.
(6) You will see screens stating that the image is being uploaded and that the flash is being updated.
After about one minute, you should see the main menu again.
(7) Your encoder is now updated.

12.1 KEL Cable Warning
If you intend to use your FVXK-13A-RPS’s KEL connections, you will need to connect it to your chosen
Sony camera block. The FVXK-13A-RPS assembly has two 30-pin KEL connectors on J5 and J7 that allow a

HD Sony block camera.
WARNING: If a 4K KEL camera is plugged into the LVDS ONLY KEL connector on the FVXK-
13A-RPS it will destroy the FVXK-13A-RPS and the camera. This is also true if a LVDS ONLY
KEL camera is plugged into the 4K KEL connector on the FVXK-13A-RPS. These actions VOID
warranty. It is also important to note that the FV4K-13A-RPS supports 4K camera ONLY on
J5 and HD only on J7.
12.2 KEL Connection
(1) Connect the KEL ribbon cable to the Sony block camera. (Gold teeth face up)
(2) Connect the other end of the KEL ribbon cable to the Interface Front PCB. (Gold teeth face away
from PCB’s)
WARNING: Only use a Z3 approved KEL ribbon cable to connect Z3’s boards to the Sony camera.
Using an incorrect cable (the cables provided by Sony) can permanently damage the boards or
camera.

13.0 RUNNING THE ENCODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on HEVC/H.265 encoding with the Z3-FVXK-13A-RPS and
streaming 2160p, 1080p or 1080i video to VLC media player running on your PC. In addition to the Z3-FVXK-
13A-RPS, you will need the following:
▪A 4K or HD video source with non-HDCP HDMI output.
▪A PC with VLC media player.
▪The SDP file(s) provided with your Z3 software release (see your customer support server account).
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your Z3 product may differ from those pictured in this document.
13.1 Set up the Video Source
(1) Select a 4K or HD source with non-HDCP HDMI output (in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is
used).
-Power on the 4K or HD Source.
-Connect HDMI to a monitor.
-Set the 4K or HD Source to 2160p, 1080p or 1080i output.
-If your source is a media player, select content you would like to stream.
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works.
13.2 Connect the Encoder
(2) Connect the supplied 2.5 mm serial cable and null modem adapter to the serial console of the
application board and to your PC. (A USB to Serial converter may be needed. If so, the FTDI
UC232R-10 (Digikey part #768-1014-ND) is recommended.)
(3) Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and now connect it to HDMI In on the board.
