1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Z3-Q603-RPS is a compact OEM rapid production starter kit supporting H.265/HEVC, H.264 and MJPEG
encode and decode in resolutions up to 2160p at 30 fps. The hardware consists of one Z3-Q603-MOD System
on Module card with one Z3-Q603-APP-0x application board, and an IO/Connector board. The software
consists of Qualcomm processor and application packages to allow users to develop their own advanced
multimedia applications.
The Z3-Q603-MOD (PCB-0101-20) is a compact OEM module which supports H.265/HEVC and H.264 High
Profile encode at up to 2160p30.

The Z3-Q603-APP (PCB-0103-20) is an application board design for rapid prototyping of the Z3-Q603-MOD
and is included in the Z3-Q603-RPS. This application board uses the I/O expansion capability of the module
to implement additional functions not present in the module itself. This application board has one HDMI
input, one HDMI output, one Sony 4K Camera KEL Input, one LVDS HD Camera KEL Input, and Composite In.
The Z3-Q603-RPS features an additional IO/Connector board (PCB-0104-20). This board features Gigabit
Ethernet, USB 3.1 type C, RS-485, UART, and RS-232 serial.
The Z3-Q603-RPS software is based on the Linux OS. The kit comes with all of the low-level resources such
as the Linux kernel, u-boot, tool chain and starter file system pre-integrated and configured. The software
bundle also contains tools to allow the development of high-level applications using hardware-accelerated
video processing. Those customers that license the optional source code package can also receive source
code for Z3’s applications, providing an ideal starting point for custom applications.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
2.1 Before Attaching A Camera Block
Before connecting a camera block, a thorough review of section 7.0 is required.
2.2 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 13.0 “RUNNING THE ENCODER” on page
21. This section describes how to quickly stream UDP, RTP, RTSP or RTMP as well as record to a Micro-
SD card. Enabling Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC), Zixi Feeder™ or KLV data are also described.
2.3 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
There are several options for updating the firmware on your RPS by following the instructions in Section
15.0: “RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD”, on page 48.
2.4 If You are Ready to Start Development
Details on how to untar and build the code can be found in Section 10.0: UNTARRING AND BUILDING
THE SAMPLE CODE”, on page 15. A brief overview of the code itself can be found in Section 11.0: “CODE
OVERVIEW,” on page 17.
Details on how to set up your system to access the code you have built can be found in Section 15.0:

6.0 UART AND RS-485 PIN-OUTS
The UART interface, connector J5, connects to /dev/ttyHS2. See figure below:

7.0 WIFI ANTENNA, J5
J5 is a low profile UMCC/MHF type connector intended for connecting an external WiFi antenna. This
connector is located on the Q603-MOD (PCB-0101-20). The module does not have an on-board antenna for
the WiFi, so one must be connected here if the WiFi function is to be used. The connector placed is a
Taoglas RECE.20279.001E.01 receptacle.

8.0 THERMAL MANAGEMENT
The Z3-Q603-RPS system is comprised of a CPU module board, one Application board which contains the
hardware implementation of the input and output circuits and one Connector board which contains the
major I/O jacks such as Ethernet and power jacks.
The system requires that heat is removed from the CPU chip on the module board and from the FPGA chip
on the Application board and dissipated into the environment in order to maintain its operating temperature
specification. It may be necessary to also remove heat from other components on the module or application
boards depending on the environmental requirements of the final application. Keeping the CPU and FPGA
chips within their allowed operating temperatures is critical for the operation of the encoder system.
The system designer is responsible for implementing the cooling mechanisms necessary for any given
application.
The Z3-Q603-RPS board set as provided from Z3 Technology includes a block of aluminum which is thermally
coupled to the CPU chip. This aluminum block is meant to be attached to a heat sink such as a metal
enclosure or other material capable of removing heat from the system.
Note that the aluminum block is a good thermal conductor but is a poor thermal sink. The aluminum block is
not efficient at radiating the heat from the CPU to air, it must be thermally connected to a device that can
dissipate the thermal energy.
The FPGA chip must also be managed carefully. This chip is located in the Application board, which is the
PCB “in the middle” of the stack, making its thermal management particularly important and a little bit
challenging. The system designer must assure some method to remove heat from the FPGA device. At a
minimum the system designer must ensure good cool air circulation in some pattern that heat is not trapped
between the Application board and the other two boards.
The thermal solution implemented by the user will determine the operating temperature range of the
system. The thermal solution must maintain the junction temperature of the CPU and FPGA chips within the
limits specified by the component’s datasheet. The CPU chip datasheet specifies a junction temperature Tj
max of 105°C, and 3GPP-mode ambient operating temperature of -20° to +60°C, while the FPGA datasheet
specifies a max junction temperature of +105°C.
Both CPU and FPGA chips have temperature sensors as part of their design, so it is possible to measure the
junction temperature of these devices directly. These temperatures are provided on the encoder’s web GUI in
the “Status” tab, in the “Temperature Status” section.
Proper operation of the module requires that the thermal solution employed is capable of maintaining the
operation temperature of the CPU between -5°C and +100°C, and the temperature of the FPGA between -
10°C and +105°C. Ideally both CPU and FPGA max temperature should be maintained below +95°C.

10.0 UNTARRING AND BUILDING THE SAMPLE CODE
10.1 Preparing the Linux Environment
Prior to building the Z3 code, certain modules are required. In Ubuntu 16.04 or later, the following
command can be used to get the required modules:
sudo apt-get install gawk wget git-core diffstat unzip texinfo gcc-multilib \
build-essential chrpath socat cpio python python3 python3-pip python3-pexpect \
xz-utils debianutils iputils-ping libsdl1.2-dev xterm repo moreutils gettext \

For Ubuntu change shell from dash to bash:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash
Then select “No” when it asks if “dash” should be the system shell (this will cause /bin/sh to be linked
to “bash” instead).
10.2 Making the Directories and Running the Make Script
The software provided will allow you to re-create the pre-installed software of the Z3-Q603-RPS starting
from the included code.
On a PC running Linux, create a directory where the released materials are going to be located:
# mkdir /home/z3/q603-rps
Copy the released tar archive to that directory (note: the name may slightly vary).
# cp SW-Q03-01015-01_20201222.tar.bz2 /home/z3/q603-rps
Untar the archive (name of tar file may slightly vary):
# tar -xvjf SW-Q03-01015-01_20201222.tar.bz2
*Note: Untarring may take up to 10 minutes.
Go into the directory just created and run the build script (directory name may slightly vary):
# cd SW-Q03-01015-01_20201222
# make universe
*Note: Building can take around 120 minutes.
*Note: See Appendix Bfor instructions to speed up the build process.
The outcome of the build process should be newly created image files in the image’s directory. You can
confirm this by doing the following:
# cd scripts/z3-img
# ls -alt
The output will look like the following note that filenames, dates, and times will differ. See section 15.0
for installation methods.

11.0 CODE OVERVIEW
Once you have untarred the code, you will see the following top-level directories:

12.0 KEL CONNECTIONS
12.1 KEL Cable Warning
If you intend to use your Q603-RPS’s KEL connections, you will need to connect it to your chosen Sony
camera block. The Q603-RPS assembly has two 30-pin KEL connectors that allow a flexible ribbon cable
to be used to connect the encoder assembly to an identical connector on a 4K or HD Sony block camera.
WARNING: If a 4K KEL camera is plugged into the HD KEL connector on the Q603-RPS it will
destroy the Q603-RPS and the camera. This is also true if a HD KEL camera is plugged into
the 4K KEL connector on the Q603-RPS. These actions VOID warranty.

12.2 KEL Connection
(1) Connect the KEL ribbon cable to the Sony block camera. (Gold teeth face up)
(2) Connect the other end of the KEL ribbon cable to the Interface Front PCB. (Gold teeth face away
from PCB’s)
WARNING: Only use a Z3 approved KEL ribbon cable to connect Z3’s boards to the Sony camera.
Using an incorrect cable (the cables provided by Sony) can permanently damage the boards or
camera.
The KEL cable is sold separately. Ordering part number: CBL-0028-01

12.3 4K/HD Switching Reboot

When switching between 4k and HD or HD and 4k monitoring mode on the Camera tab click on save
setting and a reboot is required.
