1 Hi-K Silicone Rubber Termination
1 Packet of Silicone Grease
1 Instruction Sheet
A. Prepare Cable
Check to be sure cable size fits within the kit range as shown in the dimensional table below.
1. TAPE SHIELD
a. Remove cable jacket, tape shielding, semi-con and insulation as shown in Figure 1 and
dimension table below. (Be sure to allow for depth of lug B).
b. Bind down the cable semi-con and tape shield with 2 half lapped layers of Scotch #13
Semi-Conductor Tape, starting 1/4” on tape shield to 1/4” onto cable connection. (Figure 2)
2. WIRE SHIELD
a. Remove jacket as shown in Figure 3 and dimension table below. (Be sure to allow
for depth of lug B)
b. Wrap 2 full wraps of Scotch 24 Shielding Tape over shielding wires at
jacket edge. Cut off excess 24 Tape. (Figure 3)
c. Bend shielding wires back over 24 tape and cut off excess at cable jacket edge. (Figure 3)
d. Remove cable semi-con as shown in Figure 3.
3. Remove cable insulation for a distance B.
4. CLEAN CABLE, USING STANDARD PRACTICE.
a. Wipe the cable insulation with a solvent such as 1.1.1 trichloroethane in the Scotch Brand
A-2 Cable Prep Kit or Scotch Brand A-3 Electrician’s Abrasive Roll.
b. If abrasive must be used:
1) Use on insulation only. DO NOT USE ON SEMI-CON MATERIAL.
2) Use only 120 grip aluminum oxide such as in A-2 Cable Prep Kit or Scotch Brand A-3
Electrician’s Abrasive Roll.
3) Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
B. Install Ground Strap
1. Unstrap 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50 mm) at coil.
2. Lay ground strap along cable with the extended coil facing downward (away from you)
(Figure 4). Note: Coil should be in contact with the cable shielding and coil edge should be
butted against cable jacket edge.
3. Hold coil in place with thumb. Pull coil around the cable allowing it to unwrap and rewrap
around the shielding and itself. (Figure 4). Note: Cinch (tighten) the applied coil after final
wrap.
C. Install Termination
1. Cover the edge of the 13 tape or semi-con material with a liberal coating of silicon grease.
(Figure 4) NOTE: ON THIS PRODUCT THE SILICONE GREASE DOES NOT SERVE AS A
LUBRICANT. IT MUST BE USED TO FILL THE STEP AT THE LEADING EDGE OF 13 TAPE
OR THE STEP AT THE SEMI-CON CUTOFF. Spread silicone grease over the entire exposed
primary insulation.
2. Slide the termination body onto the cable, (loose care end extending out toward cable lug)
aligning base with the edge of the constant force spring.
3. Remove termination core unwinding counterclockwise starting with the loose end. Make sure
the termination body is buffed up to the edge of the constant force spring (Figure 5). Note: An
occasional tug of the strand while unwinding will aid in care removal. Wipe off excess silicone
grease from the exposed insulation.
D. Install Lug or Connector
1. Install lug or connector per manufacturer’s instructions. See Crimping Table below when
using 3M type lugs.
NOTE: when installing in enclosed
switchgear or transformers maintain
clearances required by
manufacturers.
