1. Important Information – Read Before Use
Read the Instructions for Use carefully before using the Ambu® aBox™ 2. The Instructions for Use
may be updated without further notice. Copies of the current version are available upon
request. The latest version is available on ambu.com. Please be aware that the instructions do
not explain or discuss clinical procedures. They describe only the basic operation and
precautions related to the operation of the Ambu® aBox™ 2.
In the Instructions for Use, the term displaying unit refers to Ambu® aBox™ 2. The terms
visualization device and endoscope are used interchangeably throughout the document and
refer to compatible Ambu endoscopes and other visualization devices that can be connected
to and used with the displaying unit.
These Instructions for Use apply only to the displaying unit. For information on a specific
Ambu visualization device, refer to the relevant Instructions for Use
1.1. Intended Use/Indications for Use
The aBox 2 is intended to display live imaging data from compatible Ambu visualization
devices.
1.2. Intended Patient Population
As the displaying unit is intended to display live imaging data from specific Ambu visualization
devices, the intended patient population will be defined by the connected Ambu visualization
devices.
1.3. Intended User Profile
Healthcare professionals trained on procedures with compatible visualization devices, typically
assisted by other healthcare professionals and medical technicians with knowledge of setting
up medical devices.
1.4. Clinical Benefits
In conjunction with a compatible single-use visualization device, the Ambu® aBox™ 2 provides
visualization and inspection of hollow organs and cavities in the body.
1.5. Contraindications
None known for the displaying unit.
1.6. Warnings and Cautions
Failure to observe these warnings and cautions may result in patient injury or damage to the
equipment. Ambu is not responsible for any damage to the equipment or patient injury
resulting from incorrect use.
WARNINGS
1. To avoid patient injury during procedure, be careful to check whether the image on
the screen is a live image or a recorded image and verify that the orientation of the
image is as expected.
2. To minimize risk of contamination, always wear gloves during handling of the
displaying unit and ensure that the displaying unit is cleaned and disinfected before
and after each use in accordance with chapter 9.
3. Portable radio frequency (RF) communications equipment (including peripherals
such as antenna cables and external antennas) should be used no closer than 30 cm
(12 inches) to any part of the displaying unit and the attached visualization device,
including cables specified by the manufacturer. Otherwise, this could result in
degradation of the performance of this equipment.

4. To avoid risk of electric shock, only connect ancillary equipment, which is
approved as medical electrical equipment.
5. To avoid risk of electric shock, this equipment shall only be connected to a supply
mains with protective earth.
6. Use of this equipment adjacent to or stacked with other equipment should be
avoided because it could result in improper operation. If such use is necessary,
this equipment and the other equipment should be observed to verify that they
are operating normally.
7. To avoid patient injury due to loss of the live image during procedure, ensure to
correctly connect the power cord to an appropriate power source that will ensure
continuous power supply.
8. To avoid patient injury due to overheating of the displaying unit causing it to
suddenly shut down during procedure, do not cover the ventilation holes at the
bottom of the displaying unit.
9. To avoid electric shock and burns, do not touch any conductive metal parts of
the displaying unit while using high frequency tools (e.g. electrosurgical
equipment).
10. To ensure that images and videos are correctly exported to external systems and
to avoid potential misdiagnosis due to mixing-up of patient data, carefully check
that the patient identifiers are correct before starting, saving and exporting
the procedure.
CAUTIONS
1. To prevent damaging the displaying unit, always place the displaying unit on a hard
flat surface during use to avoid covering the ventilation holes at the bottom of the
displaying unit. Be aware that covering the ventilation holes can also lead to a high
surface temperature.
2. Using high frequency tools (e.g. electrosurgical equipment) in proximity of a
connected visualization device may affect the live image. This is not a malfunction.
Wait a few seconds for the image to return to normal.
3. Do not place any heavy objects on the top of the displaying unit when it is folded
flat, as this could damage the equipment and lead to malfunction or exposure of
electrical parts.
4. Use of accessories, transducers, and cables other than those specified or provided by
the manufacturer of this equipment could result in increased electromagnetic
emissions or decreased electromagnetic immunity of this equipment and result in
improper operation.
5. To avoid malfunction during procedure, do not use the displaying unit if it is
damaged in any way or if any part of the functional check described in section 7.1
fails.
6. To avoid malfunction of the equipment only use spare parts supplied by Ambu. Do
not modify the spare parts.
7. Cleaning and disinfection wipes shall be moist, but not dripping to ensure no
damage to internal electronics of the displaying unit.
8. If using wipes containing hypochlorite or citric acid during cleaning, ensure that all
residue is completely removed. Wipes containing hypochlorite or citric acid may
affect the screen's antireflective coating over time. You should limit the use of wipes
containing hypochlorite or citric acid to required cases only.
1.7. Potential Adverse Events
None known for the displaying unit.
1.8. General Notes
If, during the use of this device or as a result of its use, a serious incident has occurred, please
report it to the manufacturer and to your national authority.

2. Device Description
The displaying unit can be connected to compatible Ambu visualization devices to display
video images. The following sections describe the components of the displaying unit and list
compatible devices.

4. First-Time Setup
Before using the displaying unit for the first time, follow the steps described here. Letters in
grey circles refer to the illustrations in the Quick Guide on page 2.
1. Unpack the displaying unit and verify that no parts are missing. Refer to the parts
described in chapter 2.
2. Closely examine the displaying unit and other parts for any damage. Do not use the
displaying unit if it is damaged in any way A.
3. Place the displaying unit on a hard and leveled surface. Be aware to place the displaying
unit in a position where the power cord is accessible. The displaying unit can be placed
on a medical cart to make it moveable. Make sure proper position of the displaying unit to
avoid falling down during transportation.
4. If necessary, connect the supplied Wi-Fi antenna to the back of the displaying unit.
5. Connect the power cable to the power inlet on the back of the displaying unit using the
supplied power cable (see section 2.3). Connect the other end to a suitable power outlet
and switch on the power outlet B.
6. If needed, connect an external monitor Cand/or medical imaging recorder to the back
of the displaying unit.
7. If necessary, manually adjust the orientation of the touch screen of the displaying unit
D. The touch screen's position and orientation can be adjusted to a preferred position via
the adjustable positioning arm connected to the base.
8. Turn ON the displaying unit by short pressing the power button. The indicator light in
the power button switches from orange (STANDBY mode) to green (ON) E.
The user interface takes approximately 20 seconds to start up, but a live image is available
soon after the monitor is turned on if a visualization device is connected. If no visualization
device is connected, the interface will illustrate how to correctly connect a visualization device
to the displaying unit.
5. Setting Up the Software
In this chapter, the numbers in circles refer to the described part on the images.
On the user interface of the displaying unit, the tool bar containing the main system menus,
Live View , Archive , Login and Settings , is always accessible on the left side of
the screen and the active menu is emphasized with a green colour 1.

5.1. Software Installation
No installation is required for the software. For software updates/upgrades refer to chapter
8.2.
5.2. How to Log In
By default, login is required to gain full functionality of the displaying unit. Without logging in,
the default user is active, and you only have access to the functions in Live view, the Current
procedure folder and to view Device info in About under the Settings tab.

To log in, press the Login tab in the tool bar on the left. The first level menu will appear
and show the last user to log in to the displaying unit.

5.2.1. To log in as Administrator
• Press the arrow 2and select the Administrator 3user profile from the User list.
• Enter the factory default password: AmbuAdmin.
• Press Log in 4.
The password must be changed during first-time setup. Find password requirements in section
5.3.4. If you lose the Administrator password, contact your local Ambu representative for
assistance.
NOTE: Access to Archive without login can be enabled by an Administrator in General settings
explained in section 5.8. By default, users are logged out of the device after 10 minutes of
inactivity.
5.2.2. To log in as another user
• Press the arrow 2to open the User profiles menu.
• Select the desired user account and type the password in the Enter password field.
• Press the Log in button.
A confirmation dialog box will appear in the lower left corner if login was successful and the
Login icon will change to indicating that the device functionality is unlocked.
5.2.3. Edit password for Administrator
Editing the Administrator password follows the same procedure as editing the Advanced user
password (see section 5.3.3). Note that it is not possible to edit the Administrator user profile
name or create new Administrator profiles.
5.3. User Profiles
In the User profiles menu under the Settings tab, you can create new or edit existing user
profiles. To access this menu, you must be logged in as Administrator (see section 5.2). The
following sections provide information on user account privileges and instructions on creating
and editing user profiles.
5.3.1. User types
There are four different user profile types. The Default user is active when turning on the
displaying unit and does not require login. Login is required for Advanced (blue), Administrator
(orange) and Service users (green). Each user profile type has a different level of access to the
system. The user profile types, and their system access are shown in the table below.

*The Administrator can enable or disable worklist for the Default users.
**Access to Archive without login can be enabled by Administrator in Settings. By default, the current
procedure folder and the bin can be accessed without logging in.
***In the Settings menu, Default and Advanced users only have access to view device information and
the current configurations of trigger output channels and visualization device buttons. Log in as
Administrator to change settings and reconfigure trigger output channels and visualization device
buttons.
****Administrators are also able to reset passwords for all other user profiles.
*****Service users does not have permission to add and change user profiles.
An Advanced user profile provides daily users the privileges to access the Archive and
to export recorded files to a USB flash drive or a PACS server via DICOM. It is recommended to
create at least one Advanced user profile (e.g. department login), or individual Advanced
user profiles for each user of the displaying unit. It is not possible to create additional
Administrator and Service user profiles. The Administrator has privileges to change
settings for all users. All users can change their own passwords. If the Administrator password
is lost and a new one is required, please contact your local Ambu representative.
5.3.2 Create a new Advanced user profile:
To access the User profiles menu:
• Press the Settings tab in the tool bar on the left.
• Press User profiles.
• Press Add user 5.
• Enter User name 6, Password and Repeat password. For information on password
requirements, please refer to section 5.3.4.
• Press the Save button 7.

Note: By default, the Archive containing all photos and videos is password protected apart
from the current procedure folder and the bin. The Archive can be accessed by an
Administrator or an Advanced user profile.
5.3.3. Edit an existing Advanced user profile:
• Press the Settings tab in the tool bar on the left.
• Press User profiles.
• Select a user profile from the User list 8. The User name, User type, the time it was
Created for the selected user will be shown on the left side of the screen.
• Press Edit 9.

5.3.4. Password requirement
Passwords are required to be at least 8 characters. Any character is allowed. It is recommended
to use a combination of upper- and lower-case letter, numbers and symbols to enhance
password protection. Ensure to follow local guidelines.
5.4. Language
In the Language settings under the Setup menu, the language for the user interface can be
changed. The default language is English. When setting up the displaying unit, select your
language preference.
• Press the Settings tab in the tool bar on the left 12 .

NOTE: The language will change immediately when a new language is chosen.
5.5. Date and Time
• Press the Settings tab in the tool bar on the left.
• Press Setup and select Date and time 16 .
• Open the Time zone setting drop-down menu 17 and select your time zone from the
list. It is important to choose the correct time zone as the correct daylight savings is
updated automatically.
• Select Time format 18 .
• Swipe the hours and minutes wheel under Set time 19 to set the current time.
• Select the current date in the calendar under Date 20 .

NOTE: The settings are updated as soon as they are chosen.
5.6. Network Setup
In Network setup under the Setup menu you can setup connection to Wi-Fi and local area
network (LAN). For instructions on how to connect LAN cable or Wi-Fi antenna, see section
5.6.1.
NOTE: Always use a secure network when handling images and patient data. See technical
details about the configuration of
LAN and Wi-Fi in Appendix 3.
Setting up LAN connection:
Press the Settings tab in the tool bar on the left.
Press Setup and select Network setup 21 .
In the Network setup menu you can see if a LAN (ethernet) cable is connected to the
displaying unit 22 . If no LAN cable is connected, refer to section 5.6.1. for instructions on
connection to LAN.
Setting up Wi-Fi connection:
Press the Settings tab in the toolbar on the left.
Press Setup and select Network setup 21 .

Open the Wi-Fi regulatory domain 23 drop-down menu and select your region from the list.
After selecting a region an ON/OFF slider will appear 24 . Turn on Wi-Fi by pressing the ON/
OFF slider so it switches to green .
In the General menu you can set up the static/fixed Hostname 25 of the device. This is used
if it is required to have a fixed name by which the device is recognized on the network, similar
to a static IP address. The Hostname can be between 1 and 63 characters (excl. dot "."
separator) in the format of xxx.xxx.xxx
with dots separating e.g. domain names. The following

characters are allowed: a - z (lowercase letters), A - Z (uppercase letters), 0 - 9 (numbers), "-"
(hyphens are not allowed as the first and last character).
Press Configure 26 and a list of available networks is shown.
If a network is already
connected, it will be listed under Currently selected network. Otherwise the same field will
say No network selected 27 .

Connecting to a new network:
Choose a new network from the list Available networks 28 .
Type the Password 30 for the selected network. Press OK and press Connect. IP-address will be
assigned automatically.
You can enable automatic connection to a specific network by pressing the ON/OFF slider
31 . The displaying unit will automatically remember and connect to this network, when
it is recognized.

When connection to Wi-Fi is established, a Wi-Fi symbol will appear at the bottom of the
tool bar on the left 35 .
Enable manual configuration of static IP address and/or DNS server
• Press the arrow 32 to enter the IP and DNS configuration.
• Press the ON/OFF slider 33 to enable configuration of a static IP address or the ON/
OFF slider 34 for configuration of a DNS server.

Connecting to a hidden network:
Press the Add network button 29 . Enter the hidden network name and password. The
network will hereafter automatically appear on the list of Available networks 28 .
NOTES:
• Wi-Fi networks which require redirection to a login webpage for entering user name and
password are not supported on the displaying unit.
• Only WPA and WPA2 are supported.
Disconnecting from network:
Select the connected network and press Disconnect 36 .

5.6.1. Connecting to Wi-Fi and local area network (LAN)
The displaying unit contains a Wi-Fi module and an ethernet port to connect the device to a
local network. This can be used for exporting recorded imaging data to a PACS server (Picture
Archiving and Communication System) on the local network (see section 7.3.4.).
A Wi-Fi antenna can be connected to the displaying unit to achieve a better Wi-Fi connection.
The displaying unit can be connected to LAN via a LAN cable.


Connecting to LAN (Ethernet):
Connect one end of a LAN cable to the
ethernet connection port on the back of the
displaying unit.
Ensure that the other end of the LAN cable is
connected to a router or LAN wall connector.

Connecting to Wi-Fi network
The supplied Wi-Fi antenna can be connected
for better reception.
Connect the antenna to the Wi-Fi antenna
connection on the back of the displaying unit.
Orient the antenna to ensure optimal
connection to the Wi-Fi signal.
If a network error occurs in your organization, the displaying unit has full functionality while
being off-line except for exportation to a PACS server. Imaging data is stored on the local
storage of the displaying unit until manually exported to a USB flash drive or a PACS server.
5.7. PACS and Worklist Setup
In DICOM Setup under the Setup menu, you can configure connection to a PACS (Picture
Archiving and Communication System) server to be able to transfer photos and recorded
videos in DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format over an
established Wi-Fi or LAN network (see section 5.6 for network setup).
To set up a PACS server, you may need to involve your IT department or PACS manager of the
hospital.
See technical details about establishing connection to a PACS server in Appendix 3
.

5.7.1. To access the DICOM setup page:
Press the Settings tab in the toolbar on the left.

An overview of already configured PACS servers, if any, is shown.
Choose Device AE (Application Entity) title to enter the name of the displaying unit. The
default name is AmbuMon. This name will allow the PACS to recognize the displaying unit.
Press the name field 38 to change the name. The maximum length of the name is 16
characters.
Choose if the device "serial number" 39 should be assigned as the Station name or create a
"custom name" 40 . The Station name is an optional attribute in DICOM used by PACS to
identify the displaying unit.

5.7.2. Set up connection to PACS server:
Press Add new 41 , and the Configure new PACS server menu will appear.
Press the first field (PACS name) 42 and type to add the details.

Information needed Explanation
PACS name This is the name of the PACS. Used in the export menu to
select the PACS when transferring photos and videos.
PACS AE Title PACS Application Entity Title.
The maximum length of the AE Title is 16 characters.
Host name IP-address, MAC address or full web address for the PACS.
Port number Network port no. for the PACS.
When all the fields have been filled press Create to save the PACS configuration. In the
following window you can test the PACS connectivity by pressing the "Test connection"
button. If the test fails, check if the entered information is correct and try again. For further
assistance please contact your local PACS manager.
5.7.3. Worklist settings
Administrators or Service Users can enable/disable the user’s ability to use the Worklist
function by pressing the ON/OFF slider 43 .
Use the Worklist server AE (application entity) title to uniquely identify the device on the
network. Press the Titel box 44 and use the keyboard to type the specific name for the device.
The Worklist server hostname is used to store patient information on a specific server. Find
the server by typing the server’s Web/IP address in the field 45 . Type the Worklist server
port number 46 to store patient data on a specific file path of the server. If the server is
configured to use different Modalities, this can be changed by picking the Modalities used by
the server 47 .
To test if the device is successfully connected, press the Test worklist connection button 48 .
