1. Introduction
The 9dLD Location Device is DECT based and is used in the Ascom IP-DECT System when
location function is required. The handsets within the system can be programmed to measure
the radio signal of the 9dLD, and evaluate whether it is the best location. The location
information is transmitted together with an alarm and gives an indication of the position of the
handset.

pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable
protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates,
uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with
the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is
no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does
cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by
turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by

2. Board Description
The 9dLD consists of two circuit boards, a radio circuit board and the 9dLD circuit board shown
in figure below. The radio circuit board is screwed tight onto the bottom side of the 9dLD circuit
board. The placement of components are shown in figure below.

3. Cabling
The 9dLD is delivered with five IP65 classified cable entries for power cable and antenna
cables. Using an internal antenna only the power cable needs a cable entry. Using one or four
external antennas instead of the internal will make use of one or four more of the supplied
cable entries. At delivery none of the cable entries are mounted, nor are cable entry holes
drilled, thus making it possible to find the most appropriate cable entry positions upon
installation. Drill holes and push cable entries into positions. Below is the information needed
to mount each entry on the casing.
The cable should be thread through the cable entry from the outside to the inside.

IMPORTANT: Cable entries must be used. No cable entries must be directed
downwards.

4. Mount the 9dLD Box
If 9dLD is mounted higher than 2m, it is critical that the locator is securely and firmly attached
to a wall. No cable entries must be directed downwards.
To attach the locator rear case onto the wall or ceiling, follow the below-mentioned
recommendations:
• Use 4 pieces of pan head screws.
• For all wall (except for plywood and solid wood) use an anchor that is intended for the
material and screw in question. If an anchor is used, the length of the screw must be approx.
10 mm longer than the anchor.
• Make sure that there is a significant increase of the required torque when the screws are
fully engaged.
• Test that the 9dLD is securely attached by firmly pull it from the wall.
When 9dLD box is chosen with internal antenna, recommended mounting height is equal to
carrying height of the handset, about 1.5 m (1.2 - 1.8 m). For mounting with external antennas,
refer to the DECT Location Version C and D, Function Description, TD 92629EN.
It is also recommended to mount the 9dLD box no more than 10 m of cable length from
external antennas, if such are used. This is due to attenuation in cable, appr. 0.8 dB per metre
of cable.
Regardless chosen antenna configuration, the 9dLD box should be mounted where electrical
power is accessible.
1 Open the plastic case by removing the four screws on the cover plate.
2 Fasten the back plate of the case on the desired surface with four screws, see
Figure 2. Mounting dimensions on page 5 for mounting dimensions.

NOTE: The 9dLD antennas have to be mounted within the coverage area of the
DECT system. See DECT Location Version C and D, Function Description,
TD 92629EN for more information.

5. Mount Antennas
The 9dLD box supports up to four antennas. It can be fitted with one internal antenna and up to
three external antennas, or, if no internal antenna is used, up to four external antennas. The
choice depends upon the situation and number of location codes. See DECT Location Version
C and D, Function Description, TD 92629EN for a more detailed discussion on this topic.
5.1 Mount Internal Antenna
1 Open the plastic case of the 9dLD box by removing the four screws on the cover plate.
2 Remove the screws on the two spacers.
3 Connect antenna connector in the box to the antenna with the antenna cable. Tighten nuts
relatively hard for good electrical connection.
4 Fit antenna on the spacers and fasten it with the two screws again.
Discard the supplied cover lid and dedicated screws delivered with the antenna.
5 Refit 9dLD box cover plate with four screws, observing that reed relay and tamper
protection magnet are placed opposite each other.
Notes: 1) Antennas, and antenna cables with male SMA connectors, are accessories.
2) It is never recommended to mix internal and external antennas in one 9dLD
box. The cables have different damping which could cause unbalance in the
coverage.
3) Because of signal leakage from the 9dLD box it is recommended to only
use external antennas when two location IDs are used. Ideally the 9dLD
should be placed some distance away from the antennas. It can for example,
when the antennas are placed in the handsets carrying height, be placed in an
under-roofing. Refer to DECT Location Version C and D, Function Description,
TD 92629EN.
4) When only one location ID is used it must be configured for location 1, which
means that the antenna(s) must be connected to SMA connectors 1 (A/B). The
9dLD uses these antennas when searching for system.
NOTE: Normally the antenna shall be mounted horizontal, see marking on antenna.
NOTE: The antenna must be placed with the squared metal area facing towards the
room, see Figure 6. Switches for setting of the RSSI Threshold value on the
9dLD on page 13.

5.2 Mount External Antennas
Up to four external antennas can be connected to the 9dLD box, two antennas for each
location ID. Antennas fit into standard electric lightswitch housings for flush mounting. It is
recommended to mount the 9dLD external antennas preferably no more than 10 m of cable
away from 9dLD box, due to attenuation in antenna cables and connectors.
Mounting height is recommended to be at the same height as the handset is carried, normally
around 1.5 m (1.2 to 1.8 m). External antennas, one or two for one location ID, or up to four for
two location IDs, are often mounted on each side of a doorway or a passage. Make sure you
have suitable lightswitch housings for flush mounting where you want the antennas.
1 Connect antenna with antenna cable of suitable length (3, 5, 7 or 10 m).
2 Fit antenna inside lightswitch housing.
NOTE: The antenna must be placed with the squared metal area facing towards the room,
see Figure 6. Switches for setting of the RSSI Threshold value on the 9dLD on page 13.
3 Fit cover lid with two supplied screws.
4 Feed antenna cable through protective conduits to 9dLD box, where cable is fed through
cable entry.
Tighten all antenna cable connectors relatively hard for good electrical connection.
5.2.1 Tamper Monitoring of External Antennas
The 9dLD Locator version D supports tamper monitoring of external antennas.
To enable tamper monitoring of external antennas:
1 Mount a jumper (1A–1B, 2A–2B) for each antenna to be monitored.
2 Mount a jumper (X) for short circuit detection and/or a jumper (Y) for open circuit detection.
The detection setting is dependent on the antenna design as described on the following
table.
Notes: 1) See 3. Cabling on page 4 about external antenna cable entries in 9dLD box.
2) It is highly recommended that cables are fed through protective conduits.
3) Normally the antenna shall be mounted horizontal, see marking on antenna.
NOTE: Jumpers may be mounted at delivery. Remove them to disable monitoring,
or check their placing if monitoring is to be used.

6. Installation
6.1 Connect Supply Voltage
The installation cables should be flame resistant and comply with the "VW-1" or the relevant
"60332" standards.
The screw connector is rated for cables with a cross-section of up to 2.5 mm2or AWG13.
Connect supply voltage (polarity independent) to pin 1 and 2 on J2 as shown in Figure 4.

IMPORTANT: 9dLD should be protected against currents exceeding 10A. It is the
responsibility of the installer to select cable thickness, cable length
and fuse or other current limiting factors so that a potential failure
condition does not result in overheated cables or other dangers

7. Configuration
The programming and the software upgrade of the 9dLD location device, is done by using the
Portable Device Manager (PDM) Windows version. The PDM Windows version is run on a PC
and the programming/software upgrade is done via the serial communication (RS232).
For instructions on how to use the PDM Windows version, refer to the Ascom Portable Device
Manager (WinPDM), Installation and Operation Manual, TD 92325EN.
7.1 Parameter Template
A template with settings identical for all 9dLD Location devices can be created in the PDM
Windows version. Either by creating a template from start, or by selecting an already created
location device and save the settings as a template. Refer to the Ascom Portable Device
Manager (WinPDM), Installation and Operation Manual, TD 92325EN.
7.2 Recommended Working Flow
1 Open the PDM Windows version.
2 Create a numbers or a range of numbers in the PDM.
3 Set the parameters, refer to 7.3 Parameters Settings on page 11, or apply a template with
common parameters and then add the individual settings, refer to the Ascom Portable
Device Manager (WinPDM), Installation and Operation Manual, TD 92325EN.
4 Connect the 9dLD location device to the computer with an RS232 cable, see 6.2 Connect
RS232 on page 10.
5TheNew device wizard will open. Associate the 9dLD location device to a number created
in step 2.
6 Repeat step 4 to 5 for all 9dLD location devices.
7.3 Parameters Settings
The PDM Windows version is used when setting the system registration parameters and the
location parameters, enabling immediate alarm transmission, and when adjusting the range.
The RSSI threshold range can also be set/adjusted manually on the module, refer to 7.3.1 Set
the threshold value on the 9dLD on page 13.
To be able to set the system registration parameters, the following must be known:
•PARK
•LAL
• PLI
This information can be retrieved from the system or the handsets in the system.
For handsets registered in the PDM, the registration parameters can be found in the PDM. For
handsets with SIM cards the parameters can be found by placing the SIM card in the SIM Card
Programmer, select Registration and the system that the 9dLD should function within, and read
the parameters.

1 Select Systems > System A > Registration Data.
2 Enter following parameters:

Two different locations can be programmed on one 9dLD. The location code consists of three
hexadecimal digits (000-FFF).

NOTE: Location 2 can have a unique location ID but it can
also have the same ID as location 1.
• RSSI threshold A handset with DECT Location feature enabled, measures
the radio signal of the 9dLD. The handset will also receive
the RSSI threshold value set in the 9dLD. If the measured
radio signal is stronger than the threshold value, the
location is considered to be the best.
The RSSI threshold value in the 9dLD should be in the
interval 45 to 93, which means a radio signal of -45 to -93
dBm. By setting a high threshold value, e.g. -45, the
handset has to be closer to the 9dLD antenna before it can
be considered as the best location.
Example:
If the threshold value is set to 50 (-50 dBm; a relatively
high value), the handset has to be closer to the 9dLD than
if the threshold value is set to 70 (-70 dBm; a relatively low
value).
Included in the location transmission.
Default: 50 -dBm (min 30, max 93)

3 If both locations are used, enable and configure Location 2.

7.3.1 Set the threshold value on the 9dLD
The threshold value can also be set/adjusted on the 9dLD location device.

Press SW03 to increase and SW26 to decrease the RSSI Threshold value. One press
increases/decreases the value with 1 dBm. If SW03 or SW26 is pressed and held, the threshold
value will be set to maximum respectively minimum value.
See DECT Location Version C and D, Function Description, TD 92629EN for more information
about how to set the threshold value.
7.4 Locator Monitoring
The monitor output is a galvanically isolated relay contact (< 15 ohm) used for supervision of the
9dLDs. The relay contact becomes open circuit (> 1 M ohm) if a fault is detected, for example
that the tamper protection of the lid/casing has been triggered, a monitored external antenna
has been disconnected or the supply voltage disconnected.
• Immediate alarm
transmission
When set to On and a handset with special location
enabled receives the location, an alarm will be sent
immediately. The type of the alarm will be “Special
Location”.

1 Connect J1:4 on the 9dLD to the positive pole on the external Power Supply (+12 or +24 V
DC). Connect J1:3 on the 9dLD and the negative pole on the external Power Supply to the
Alarm Module (T941AM8 or T941AM32 – see Installation Guide for the Alarm Modules). See
Figure 7. Connection of locator monitoring for three 9dLD units on page 14 above for more
information.
2 The 9dLD monitor outputs can be connected in series. Connect J1:1 on the first 9dLD to J1:4
on the next, and J1:2 on the first to J1:3 on the next. The last unit in the series has to be
strapped. Strap J1:1–2 on the 9dLD.
Depending on the type of Alarm Module and the supply voltage in the monitor loop, the
following number of units can be connected to the same input:
3 Reed relay, SW1, is connected in series with the monitor output. The relay closes when a
magnet is placed near to and parallel to it. The magnet in the 9dLD lid is placed so that the
relay will open in case of any physical damage or tampering.

8. Installation Check
1 Switch the power on.
2 The LED will flash once with an orange light and indicates with a steady green light when
the 9dLD is operational and is synchronized to the system.
3 Use a handset to check that the required coverage is obtained, and that correct location
and threshold value are received. See DECT Location Version C and D, Function
Description, TD 92629EN for more information.

9. Maintenance
9.1 Changing Parameters
Refer to chapter 7. Configuration on page 11.
9.2 Changing Software
The software upgrade of the 9dLD location device, is done by using the Portable Device
Manager (PDM) Windows version.
1 Connect the 9dLD location device to the computer with an RS232 cable, refer to 6.2
Connect RS232 on page 10.
2 Follow the instruction for downloading new software, refer to the Ascom Portable Device
Manager (WinPDM), Installation and Operation Manual, TD 92325EN.
Troubleshooting
If the download is halted/not completed, disconnect the power supply. Connect the power
supply again and restart the software download.
