1.0 INTRODUCTION
The AVT-3900 HDMI Scaler is a high bandwidth, professional quality product that
accepts HDMI signals, DVI signals (via DVI to HDMI adapter cable), PC
generated RGB signals (up to WUXGA), HD Component signals (YPbPr/YCbCr,
480i up to 1080p), S-Video and Composite Video signals as valid inputs. It scales
these signals to provide a fully compliant HDMI output with up to 1080p
resolution. The scaling engine processes the selected input signal and delivers
an HDMI output that is compliant with version 1.2 protocols. An integrated
HDMI/DVI/HDCP receiver is central to the processor along with 3-D motion
adaptive de-interlacers. 3:2 pull-down, 2:2 pull-down detection/recovery and 3-D
noise reduction complete the superior video signal processing capability. Both
digital and analog audio processing is supported and audio delays of up to
150ms can be introduced to insure lip sync. AV Toolbox Video conversion
products have been serving the industry for many years. AV Toolbox offers a full
line of high quality Standards Converters, Up-Converters, Scan Converters,
Distribution Amplifiers, Routing Switchers, Time Base Correctors, PIP Display
Devices, Quad Splitters and Video Conditioners. RF Modulators, Digital Audio
Converters, LCD Monitors/Receivers and Multimedia Cables round out the
product offerings.

Connect the furnished AC Adaptor to the AVT-3900. (Use only the furnished
adaptor to avoid the possibility of equipment damage due to over-voltage or
under-current from generic AC Adapters). Next, connect the appropriate cables
to the Input(s) and Output and turn on the source and destination devices.
Plug the AC Adapter into the AC wall outlet and press the Power “On” button.
Verify that the LED above the switch lights which indicates that power has been
applied to the AVT-3900.
Note 1: To realize maximum quality and performance, use only the highest
quality cables with the AVT-3900. Low quality cables will cause degradation of
the signal quality and limit the distance between both the source and destination
devices and the AVT-3900.

5.1 Manual Control
Referring to the front panel drawing on page 7, the Power switch (as well as the
input selectors) have LEDs above them to indicate that the power is “On” and a
Video Input selection has been made. Simply press the Power switch and then
press the appropriate input selection push-button.
To the right of the Video Input selection area is the Menu Select push-button, the
Increase and Decrease push-buttons and the “Enter” push-button. Pressing the
Menu push-button causes the OSD (On Screen Display) menu to appear. See
Section 5.2 below for a detailed discussion of the OSD.
5.2 Using the On Screen Display Menus
Regardless of whether you operate the AVT-3900 from the front panel or using
the Remote Controller, you will need to become familiar with the OSD (On
Screen Display) menu structure if you wish to take full advantage of the capability
of the product.
5.2.1 Menu Navigation:
Pressing the “Menu” button will display the OSD menu. If you are using the front
panel control method, you select the desired function by using the “+” and “-“
keys to navigate to the desired function and then press the Menu/Enter button
again to make the selection. Next, use the “+” and “-“ buttons to make the actual
adjustment and press the Menu/Enter button yet again to save your selection.
Escape from the OSD menu modes by highlighting the word “Exit” in any menu
and then pressing the Enter button.
From the IR remote controller, press the menu key to activate the OSD, use the
arrow buttons to navigate to the selection you want and then use the arrow
buttons and the “OK” button to make your adjustment or selection. Press the
“Exit” button to escape from the OSD mode.
5.2.2 Menu Structure
The AVT-3900 OSD (On Screen Display) Menu structure is a two tier display.
You first select the high level portion of the menu (Video, Color, Output, OSD
Characteristics, Audio, Information or Exit) and then, with the exception of the
Exit function; a secondary menu will appear where specific adjustments or
operational selections can be made.
The table on the following page shows the relationship of the high level and
secondary menu functions that are used to make up the OSD. To use these
functions proceed as follows: Once the OSD is visible, use the Decrease (-)
push-button to move upwards and the Increase (+) push-button to move

12
downwards on the OSD. The “Enter” push-button is used to select the High Level
area you wish to enter (Video, Color, Output, OSD Characteristics, Audio,
Information or Exit). You then repeat the above process once you’re within the
high level selection to make a specific adjustment selection. When you select
the specific area you wish to adjust (using the “Enter” push-button to make the
selection), the decrease (-) and increase (+) push-buttons allow you to make a
parameter change (e.g. change output resolution) or actually decrease or
increase the value of the selection parameter (e.g. decrease or increase the
picture brightness).

OSD Menu Notes:
Note 2: The Output sub-menu allows you to specify the resolution you want the
AVT-3900 to produce. Keep in mind that setting the resolution can cause an
apparent malfunction if you select a resolution that your display device cannot
reproduce. Make certain your display device can reproduce the resolution you
select BEFORE you select it.
Note 3: The OSD sub-menu allows you to customize the way the On Screen
Display appears when it has been accessed. The Display Select option allows
you to control when the OSD information is displayed. “Off” turns off all OSD
information except for the menu, “On” will always display the OSD information,
and “Info” will display the OSD information for 3 seconds after switching inputs.
This is a personal preference matter. You can change the default if you wish or
simply leave it at the factory setting.
Note 4: Since Video and Audio Lip Sync can be lost in Digital Television, the
AVT-3900 provides a secondary menu item called “Delay” under the Audio high
level menu selection where audio delay can be introduced to restore lip sync.
Use this function if you hear audio before the video portion of the program
appears to make the sound.
Note 5: The Info sub-menu contains technical information. If you have problems
with the AVT-3900 and require assistance, the technician may ask you to read
information from this menu to him as part of the troubleshooting process.
6.0 TROUBLESHOOTING
If the AVT-3900 Scaler does not appear to be functioning, make certain that the
source and all other devices connected to the unit are functioning correctly by
connecting each device currently connected to the AVT-3900’s outputs directly to
the source using a short length of cable. (In other words, bypass the AVT-3900 to
make certain that the problem is not with the source or destination devices.) If the
signal is present under those conditions, make certain that the power is present
to the AVT-3900. If it is, check all cables for damage. Cables should be
undamaged, as short as possible and should be premium quality.
Note: It is strongly recommended that you use premium cables such as TV One’s
Z-Plus brand or equivalent in order to achieve maximum distance cable runs and
the best performance possible. Use of low quality cables will seriously degrade
the performance of the AVT-3900 HDMI Scaler.
As a final step before contacting technical support, use the IR remote and press
the RESET button which will return the unit to the default settings.
