This device has been designed to ope ate with the antennas desc ibed below, and
having a maximum gain of 6 dBi. Antennas not as desc ibed o having a gain g eate
than 6 dB a e st ictly p ohibited fo use with this device. The equi ed antenna
impedance is 50 ohms.
1) AWID, model ANT-915CPD-A; 5.9 dBi ci cula pola ized antenna (Patch).
2) Snyde Antenna Systems, Inc., model ANTUHF-PORT-X; 6.5 dBi Patch
Antenna (Sidewinde ). Note: to comp omise the 6.5 dBi antenna gain, pa t of
the included accesso ies a e 8 ft, 16 ft o 24 ft cable to be applied between the
eade and antenna. The cable loss with 8 ft cable is 1.5 dB at 902 MHz.
To educe potential adio inte fe ence to othe use s, the antenna type and its gain
should be so chosen that the equivalent isot opically adiated powe (EIRP) is not mo e
than that equi ed fo successful communication.

1. INTRODUCTION
AWID's Sentinel-Sense MPR-3014 WinCE bi-static eade MPR-3014WF-QB is a multi-
antenna Radio F equency IDentification (RFID) eade with an on-boa d WinCE.

I/O Interface
One unique configu ation fo the MPR-3014WF-QB eade s is the possibility of having
RS-232 inte face and Ethe net inte face simultaneously p esent at the eade data input
po ts. To a bit ate possible data collision, MPR-3014 dete mines that local ent y always
dominates. The efo e, when both Ethe net commands and se ial commands a e
p esent, se ial command will dominate. This a bit ation p ocess is automatic and
t anspa ent to the use .
MPR-3014WF-QB a e long- ange (12 to 25 feet, tag dependent) eade s with gene al
pu pose digital I/O (GP I/O – fou (4) inputs fou (4) outputs) that wo k with all leading
passive UHF passive tags. Each of these eade s comes with a unique combination of
long ead ange, small size, and low powe consumption. Its p ima y applications a e
asset management & t acking, and fleet management applications.

The fou gene al-pu pose inputs that use photo diodes a e used to accept TTL input
commands. Each input equi es 15 mA and 5V to activate. The fou outputs a e solid
state elays, with 0.03 uA off-state leakage cu ent and the ability to sink 120 mA at a
b eakdown voltage of 400V DC. All fou outputs a e p otected with eve se clamping
diodes, and eady to d ive inductive loads. The floating a angement eliminates any
g ound loop conside ations.

2.3. MEASURING READ DISTANCE
Make su e you know the tag types. Fo instance, EPC tags must be p e-p og ammed to
be ead. In ce tain eade s and tags, the use must also be mindful of the tag’s
o ientation and the eade ’s antenna o ientation, what mounting su face the tags a e
designed fo and how the tags a e supposed to be mounted. Any depa tu e f om its
intended pu pose will d astically affect the eade ’s ability to ene gize the tag and its
ead ange.
When measu ing the eade ’s ead ange, make su e that the tag is p ope ly o iented to
the eade antenna, and fo optimum pe fo mance, be su e the ope ato ’s finge is not
within th ee (3) inches of the tag’s antenna su face.

3. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
This section p ovides installation and ope ation info mation fo MPR-3014WF-QB eade s.

3.2. PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION
3.2.1. Bench Top Ve ification
It is always a good idea to ve ify system ope ation befo e committing to a full-scale
installation. The following a e the necessa y steps to test eade ’s ope ation in a static
envi onment.
• Connect eade to Netwo k with a netwo k cable at the TCP/IP po t
• Connect the powe jack f om the wall plug powe supply to eade
• Load the demo p og am CD onto (installation) PC and launch the demo p og am.
T y Connect afte filling in the IP add ess of eade and then some commands.
3.2.2. Aiming of Antenna
Antenna Pattern for MPR-3014WF-QB
MPR-3014WF-QB comes with a set of (up to 4) antenna pai s each ci cula pola ized to
ensu e eading tag with andom o ientation. Most ci cula pola ized antenna has a
ho izontal to ve tical diffe ential of up to 3 dB, this will cause the antenna patte n to
deviate f om a t ue ci cle. AWID’s antenna has a ho izontal to ve tical diffe ential of
typically less than 0.5 dB, making the antenna patte n as nea to a ci cle as possible.

3.3. INSTALLATION STEPS
• Check to ensu e that all connections a e secu e. Make su e all wi es th ough the
cable clamps a e ancho ed p ope ly; avoid dangling wi es that may become safety
haza d.
• Mount the Reade using the fou th eaded mounting holes to fasten the eade on
the desi ed mounting su face. Connect antenna(s) to eade with antenna cable(s).
• Mount o place antenna(s) at desi ed location(s). In cases whe e antenna aiming is
c itical, please o de antenna-mounting b acket (P/N 827-06W) f om AWID. This
mounting b acket p ovides pan/tilt adjustment fo the eade .

4. Notes on Software Programming an System Operation
4.1. SET UP AND SYSTEM OPERATION
4.1.1. Setting Up MPR-3014WF-QB
Powe up with the 12-V powe supply unit, connect to Netwo k th ough the Ethe net po t
with an RJ-45 cable.
4.1.2. Running a Custom Softwa e Application o the AWID Demo P og am
If AWID Demo P og am is not used, it is expected use will launch a Custom Softwa e
Application developed using the MPR 3014 P otocol and/o RFID Anywhere API to send
to eade the commands as specified.
4.1.3. Ope ating Modes
Typical ope ating modes fo MPR-3014WF-QB can be g ouped into the following modes:
Search Mo e
This mode is used when ope ato o use is not ce tain which family of tags is placed on the
items to be t acked. Since most tags a e dete ministic in natu e, the eade must cycle th ough
each and eve y p otocol, issue a p otocol specific inqui y, to hail and to wait fo a esponse f om
tags of that specific p otocol. The efo e, if the e a e many diffe ent p otocols, fo an unt ained
obse ve , the eade esponse will become sluggish.
Mixe Mo e
This mode assumes the use is awa e of the types of p otocol in use, and fu the mo e, the
use made a dete mined effo t to ope ate the eade in a mixed p otocol mode. In this
mode, the use can decide how many and which specific p otocols to be selected. Once
Mix P otocol Mode is selected, the eade will outinely cycle th ough each p otocol, dwell
long enough fo the eade to wait fo a esponse and then move onto the next p otocol. It
should be noted that in a mixed p otocol mode, the tag must have sufficient time to
espond to the eade , and the efo e, it can only be used on a conveyo belt a angement,
with specific speed est ictions.
Single Protocol Mo e
Single p otocol is the no mal mode of ope ation, whe e the p otocol type is known and
many tags a e expected to pass th ough the eade s.
