How to access the pro uct
AXIS IP Utility and AXIS De ice Manager are recommended methods for nding Axis products on the network and assigning them IP
addresses in Windows®. Both applications are free and can be downloaded from axis.com/support
The product can be used with the following browsers:
• Windows®:ChromeTM (recommended), Firefox®,Edge®,or Opera®
• OS X®:ChromeTM (recommended) or Safari®
•Other operating systems: ChromeTM or Firefox®.

How to access the pro uct from abrowser
1. Start aweb browser.
2. Enter the IP address or host name of the Axis product in the browser’s address eld.
To access the product from aMac computer (OS X), go to Safari, click on Bonjour and select the product from the
drop-down list. To add Bonjour as abrowser bookmark, go to Safari >Preferences.
If you do not know the IP address, use AXIS IP Utility to locate the product on the network. For information about
how to disco er and assign an IP address, see the document How to assign an IP address and access your device on the
product page at axis.com.
3. Enter your username and password. If this is the rst time the product is accessed, the root password must rst be
congured.
4. The product’s li e iew page opens in your browser.
About secure passwor s
Important
Axis de ices send the initially set password in clear text o er the network. To protect your de ice after the rst login, set
up asecure and encrypted HTTPS connection and then change the password.
The de ice password is the primary protection for the data and ser ices. Axis de ices do not impose apassword policy as they may be
used in arious types of installations. To protect your data we recommend that you:
• Change the default password that comes with each de ice.
• Use apassword with at least 8characters, preferably created by apassword generator.
• Don’t expose the password.
• Change the password at arecurring inter al, at least once ayear.
Set asecure passwor for the root account
Important
The default administrator username is root.If the password for root is lost, reset the de ice to factory default settings.
1. Type apassword. Follow the instructions about secure passwords. See About secure passwords on page 5.
2. Retype the password to conrm the spelling.

The remote focus and zoom functionality allows you to make focus and zoom adjustments to your camera from acomputer. It is a
con enient way to ensure that the scene’s focus, iewing angle and resolution are optimized without ha ing to isit the camera’s
installation location.

How to hi e parts of the image with privacy masks
What is aprivacy mask?
Apri acy mask is auser-dened area that pre ents users from iewing apart of the monitored area. In the ideo stream, pri acy
masks appear as blocks of solid color or blurred image elements.
You’ll see the pri acy mask on all snapshots, recorded ideo, and li e streams.
You can use the VAPIX® application programming interface (API) to turn off the pri acy masks.
Important
Using multiple pri acy masks may affect the product’s performance.
How to create aprivacy mask
To create apri acy mask, go to Settings >Privacy mask .
How to re uce noise in low-light con itions
To reduce noise in low-light conditions, you can adjust one or more of the following settings:
•Make sure that the exposure mode is automatic.
Note
Increasing the max shutter alue can result in motion blur.
•The shutter speed should be as slow as possible, which means you should set max shutter to the highest possible alue.
•Reduce sharpness in the image.
How to benet from IR light in low-light con itions using night mo e
Your camera uses isible light to deli er color images during the day. As light diminishes, you can set the camera to automatically
shift to night mode. In night mode the camera uses both isible light and near-infrared light to deli er black-and-white images.
Since the camera uses more of the a ailable light it can deli er brighter, more detailed, images.
1. Go to Settings >Image >Day and night,and make sure that the IR cut lter is set to Auto.

How to select exposure mo e
There are different exposure mode options in the camera that adjusts aperture, shutter speed, and gain to impro e image quality for
specic sur eillance scenes. Go to Settings >Image >Exposure and select between the following exposure modes:
• For most use cases, select Automatic exposure.
• For en ironments with certain articial lighting, for example uorescent lighting, select Flicker free.
Select the same frequency as the power line frequency.
• For en ironments with certain articial light and bright light, for example outdoors with uorescent lighting at night and
sun during daytime, select Flicker reduced.
Select the same frequency as the power line frequency.
• To lock the current exposure settings, select Hold current.
How to stabilize ashaky image with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)
EIS can be used in en ironments where the product is mounted in an exposed location and subject to ibrations, for example, wind
or passing trafc. Turn on EIS to get asmoother and steadier image without blur.
EIS also reduces the le size of the compressed image and lowers the bitrate of the ideo stream.
Note
When EIS is turned on the image is cropped slightly, lowering the maximum resolution.
1. Go to Settings >Image.
2. Turn on EIS.

Overlays
About overlays
O erlays are superimposed o er the ideo stream. They are used to pro ide extra information during recordings, such as atimestamp,
or during product installation and conguration.
How to show atext overlay when the camera etects motion
This example explains how to display the text “Motion detected” when the camera detects motion:
Make sure the AXIS Video Motion Detection application is running:
1. Go to Settings >Apps >AXIS Video Motion Detection.
2. Start the application if it is not already running.
3. Make sure you ha e set up the application according to your needs.
Add the o erlay text:
4. Go to Settings >Overlay.
5. Select Create overlay and conrm Text o erlay.
6. Enter #D in the text eld.
7. Choose alignment, text size and appearance.
Create an action rule:
8. Go to System >Events >Action rules.
9. Create an action rule with AXIS Video Motion Detection as trigger.
10. From the list of actions, select Overlay text.
11. Type “Motion detected”.
12. Set the duration.
Note
If you update the o erlay text it will be automatically updated on all ideo streams dynamically.

Decide which compression method to use based on your iewing requirements, and on the properties of your network. The
a ailable options are:

Motion JPEG or MJPEG is adigital ideo sequence that is made up of aseries of indi idual JPEG images. These images are then
displayed and updated at arate sufcient to create astream that shows constantly updated motion. For the iewer to percei e motion
ideo the rate must be at least 16 image frames per second. Full motion ideo is percei ed at 30 (NTSC) or 25 (PAL) frames per second.
The Motion JPEG stream uses considerable amounts of bandwidth, but pro ides excellent image quality and access to e ery image
contained in the stream.
H.264 or MPEG 4 Part 10/AVC
Note
H.264 is alicensed technology. The Axis product includes one H.264 iewing client license. Installing additional unlicensed
copies of the client is prohibited. To purchase additional licenses, contact your Axis reseller.
H.264 can, without compromising image quality, reduce the size of adigital ideo le by more than 80% compared to the Motion
JPEG format and by as much as 50% compared to the MPEG-4 standard. This means that less network bandwidth and storage space
are required for aideo le. Or seen another way, higher ideo quality can be achie ed for agi en bitrate.
How to re uce ban wi th an storage
Important
If you reduce the bandwidth it can result in loss of details in the picture.
1. Go to li e iew and select H.264.
2. Go to Settings >Stream.
3. Do one or more of the following:
- Turn on the Zipstream functionality and select the desired le el.
- Turn on dynamic GOP and set ahigh GOP length alue.
- Increase the compression.
- Turn on dynamic FPS.
How to set up network storage
To store recordings on the network, you need to set up network storage:
1. Go to Settings >System >Storage.
2. Click Setup under Network storage.
3. Enter the IP address of the host ser er.
4. Enter the name of the shared location on the host ser er.
5. Mo e the switch if the share requires alogin, and enter username and password.
6. Click Connect.
How to a au io to your recor ing
Edit the stream prole which is used for the recording:
1. Go to Settings >System >Stream proles.
2. Select the stream prole and click Modify.
3. In the Audio tab, select the Audio stream checkbox and select On from the drop-down list.
