WARNING: Not To Be Used for Personnel Protecon
Never use this device as a sensing device for personnel protecon. Doing so could lead to serious injury or death.
This device does not include the self-checking redundant circuitry necessary to allow its use in personnel safety
applicaons. A sensor failure or malfuncon can cause either an energized or de-energized sensor output
condion.

1.2 Overview
The Q4X Analog Sensor is a Class 1 laser CMOS measuring sensor that uses a 0 to 10 V (4 to 20 mA) output to represent the distance
measured.
When the sensor is in Run mode, the display shows the current measurement reading or corresponding analog output value. The size
and locaon of the analog output window can be manually adjusted or the selected TEACH method can be performed.
When the sensor is in Setup mode, all standard operang parameters, including TEACH mode, analog slope, response me, and more
can be adjusted, or a factory reset can be performed.

1.3.1 Display and Indicators
The display is a 4-digit, 7-segment LED. The main screen is the Run Mode screen, which shows the current distance to the target in
millimeters.

1.4 Laser Descripon and Safety Informaon
CAUTION: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specied herein may result in
hazardous radiaon exposure. Do not aempt to disassemble this sensor for repair. A defecve unit must be returned to the
manufacturer.
Class 1 Lasers
Class 1 lasers are lasers that are safe under reasonably foreseeable condions of operaon, including the use of opcal instruments
for intrabeam viewing.

2 Installaon
2.1 Install the Safety Label
The safety label must be installed on Q4X sensors that are used in the United
States.
Note: Posion the label on the cable in a locaon that has minimal
chemical exposure.
1. Remove the protecve cover from the adhesive on the label.
2. Wrap the label around the Q4X cable, as shown.
3. Press the two halves of the label together.

2.3 Mount the Sensor
1. If a bracket is needed, mount the sensor onto the bracket.
2. Mount the sensor (or the sensor and the bracket) to the machine or equipment at the desired locaon. Do not ghten the
mounng screws at this me.
2Applying lt to sensor may improve performance on reecve targets. The direcon and magnitude of the lt depends on the applicaon, but a 15° lt is oen sucient.

3. Check the sensor alignment.
4. Tighten the mounng screws to secure the sensor (or the sensor and the bracket) in the aligned posion.

Note: Shielded cordsets are recommended for all models with quick disconnect ngs. It is recommended that the shield
wire be connected to -V dc (the blue wire).
2.5 Cleaning and Maintenance
Handle the sensor with care during installaon and operaon. Sensor windows soiled by ngerprints, dust, water, oil, etc. may create
stray light that may degrade the peak performance of the sensor. Blow the window clear using ltered, compressed air, then clean as
necessary using water and a lint-free cloth.

3 Sensor Programming
Program the sensor using the buons on the sensor or the remote input (limited programming opons).
In addion to programming the sensor, use the remote input to disable the buons for security, prevenng unauthorized or accidental
programming changes. See Locking and Unlocking the Sensor Buons on page 18 for more informaon.
3.1 Setup Mode
1. Access Setup mode and the sensor menu from Run mode by pressing and holding MODE for longer than 2 seconds.
2. Use and to navigate through the menu.
3. Press SELECT to select a menu opon and access the submenus.
4. Use and to navigate through the submenus.
5. Select a submenu opon.
• Press SELECT to select a submenu opon and return to the top menu.
•Press and hold SELECT for longer than 2 seconds to select a submenu opon and return immediately to Run mode.
To exit Setup mode and return to Run mode, navigate to and press SELECT.

3.1.1 TEACH Menu
Use this menu to select the TEACH mode. The default is two-point TEACH.

Aer the TEACH mode is selected, from Run mode, press and hold TEACH for longer than 2 seconds to start the TEACH mode and
program the sensor. See TEACH Procedures on page 19 for addional informaon and remote input TEACH instrucons.
3.1.2 Base Measurement Rate
Use this menu to select the base measurement rate. The total response speed depends upon the measurement rate seng and the
averaging seng. See Averaging on page 10 for more informaon.

3.1.3 Averaging
Use this menu to set the number of measurements that are averaged together for the analog output. Increasing the averaging improves
repeatability, but increases the total response speed. The default is 1. The lter can be set to 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, or 512. Use
the table to determine the total response speed.

Note: The Q4X uses a dynamic measurement rate, so these response mes are worst-case.
3.1.4 Slope
Use this menu to set the slope as posive or negave. This swaps the 0 V and 10 V (4 and 20 mA) values. The default is posive. The
slope is dened relave to the zero reference, so if the zero seng is changed from near to far, a slope will be considered posive if the
analog output increases as the target becomes closer to the face of the sensor.

3.1.5 Zero Reference Locaon
Use this menu to select the zero reference locaon. The default is , 0 = the front of the sensor.
• —0 = the front of the sensor; the measurement increases further from the sensor
• —0 = maximum range; the measurement increases closer to the sensor
3.1.6 Shi the Zero Reference Locaon aer a TEACH
Use this menu to select whether the sensor shis the zero reference locaon based on the last TEACH process. The default is , 0
= the front of the sensor or the maximum range.

• —0 = the front of the sensor or the maximum range, depending on the seng
This gure illustrates three examples of how changes to the zero and shi sengs aect what distance readout is shown on the display
when in 2-pt TEACH mode. Changes to the zero seng aect the direcon in which the distance increases. Turning the shi seng on
sets the taught locaon as the reference point for any distance measurement. For two-point TEACH, this is the 0 V (4 mA) point. For
one-point TEACH, this is the 5 V (12 mA) point.

3.1.7 Loss of Signal
Use this menu to select the Analog Output value used by the sensor during a loss of signal. When a signal is restored, measurement
resumes. The default is 0 V (4 mA).
Opon Descripon
0 V (4 mA)—default The Analog Output switches to this value 2 seconds aer a loss of signal. When advanced
measurements are enabled, the Analog Output is updated to this value immediately upon the release
of the trigger input. For Voltage models, this is 0 V (4 mA). (Default)
10.5 V (20.5 mA) The Analog Output switches to this value 2 seconds aer a loss of signal. When advanced
measurements are enabled, the Analog Output is updated to this value immediately upon the release
of the trigger input. For Voltage models, this is 10.5 V (20.5 mA).
Hold The Analog Output holds the last value indenitely during a loss of signal. When advanced
measurements are enabled, the last value is held across the triggered measurement periods.
The Range advanced measurement behavior is aected by the Loss of Signal opon. For addional informaon on advanced
measurements, see Trigger on page 14. The Range advanced measurement tracks a maximum and a minimum during the
measurement period, and calculates the range as follows:
Range = maximum distance – minimum distance

If the maximum and/or minimum measurements are outside of the taught range values, the Loss of Signal opon determines how the
range is calculated.
Opon Sensor Behavior in Range Mode
0 V (4 mA) If the maximum or minimum measurement is outside of the taught range values, the sensor outputs 0
V (4 mA) to indicate an out of range measurement.
10.5 V (20.5 mA) If the maximum or minimum measurement is outside of the taught range values, the sensor outputs
10.5 V (20.5 mA) to indicate an out of range measurement.
Hold The sensor limits the maximum and minimum measurements so that they cannot exceed the taught
range values.
3.1.8 Input Wire Funcon
Use this menu to select the input wire funcon. The default is o, ignore all remote input pulses.
• —Ignore all remote input pulses
• —Remote TEACH input
• —Laser o when pulled low
•—Laser on when pulled low
• —Master sync line output for two-sensor cross-talk avoidance
• —Slave sync line input for two-sensor cross-talk avoidance

3.1.9 Trigger
The Trigger opon sets the advanced measurement that is calculated when a trigger event is detected on the remote input. The analog
output updates with the new advanced measurement on each trigger event. To use these Trigger opons, the sensor Input Type opon
must be set to .
Trigger Submenus Descripon
Average The averaged distance since the last trigger event. (default)
Range The dierence between the maximum and minimum distance since the last trigger event. For addional informaon
on the Range measurement behavior when the maximum or minimum distance is outside of the taught values, see
Loss of Signal on page 13.
Maximum The maximum distance since the last trigger event.
Minimum The minimum distance since the last trigger event.
TrackMax The maximum distance since the last trigger event. The Analog Output tracks new maximum values during the
measurement period.
TrackMin The minimum distance since the last trigger event. The Analog Output tracks new minimum values during the
measurement period.
Sample The current distance at the me of the trigger event. The Analog Output tracks the sample values during the
measuring period.

3.1.10 Display View
Use this menu to select the display view. The default is right-reading.
• —Right-reading

When the sensor is in sleep mode, the display wakes with the rst buon press.
3.1.11 Exit Setup Mode
Navigate to and press SELECT to exit Setup mode and return to Run mode.
3.1.12 Reset to Factory Defaults
Use this menu to restore the sensor to the factory default sengs. See Factory Default Sengs on page 16.
Select to return to the sensor menu without restoring the defaults. Select to apply the factory defaults and return to
Run mode.

3.2 Manual Adjustments
Manually adjust the distance set for the 0 V (4 mA) and 10 V (20 mA) values using the and buons. The available adjustments
vary depending on the TEACH mode selected.
3.2.1 Manual Adjustments in Two-Point TEACH Mode
Adjust the 10 V (20 mA) Point
1. From Run mode, press to view and adjust the distance associated with the 10 V (20 mA) point. displays briey,
then the value slowly ashes indicang it can be changed.
Note: If no changes are made within 8 seconds, the current distance value ashes quickly and the sensor returns to Run
mode.
2. Press to move the value up or to move the value down.
Note: If no addional changes are made within 4 seconds, the current distance value ashes quickly and the sensor
returns to Run mode.
3. Press Select to conrm the new distance value. The new distance ashes rapidly, the new seng is accepted, and the sensor
returns to Run mode.

3.2.2 Manual Adjustments in One-Point TEACH Mode
Adjust the 5 V (12 mA) Midpoint
1. From Run mode, press to view and adjust the distance seng associated with the 5 V (12 mA) midpoint (the mid point of
the analog span). displays briey, then the value slowly ashes indicang it can be changed.
Note: If no changes are made within 8 seconds, the current distance value ashes quickly and the sensor returns to Run
mode.
2. Press to move the midpoint up or to move the midpoint down.
Note: If no addional changes are made within 4 seconds, the current distance value ashes quickly and the sensor
returns to Run mode.
3. Press Select to conrm the new midpoint. The new midpoint value ashes rapidly, the new seng is accepted, and the sensor
returns to Run mode.
Adjust the Analog Window Size
1. Press to view and adjust the SPAN (the analog window size). ashes briey, then the value ashes.
2. Press to increase the size of the analog window or to decrease the size of the analog window.
3. Press Select to conrm the window size. The new window size ashes rapidly, the new seng is accepted, and the sensor
returns to Run mode.
3.3 Remote Input
Use the remote input to program the sensor remotely. The remote input provides limited programming opons and is Acve low. For
Acve low, connect the gray input wire to ground (0 V dc), with a remote switch connected between the wire and ground. Pulse the
remote input according to the diagram and the instrucons provided in this manual.
The length of the individual programming pulses is equal to the value T: 0.04 seconds ≤T ≤0.8 seconds.
Exit remote programming modes by seng the remote input low for longer than 2 seconds.

3.4 Locking and Unlocking the Sensor Buons
Use the lock and unlock feature to prevent unauthorized or accidental programming changes. Three sengs are available:
• —The sensor is unlocked and all sengs can be modied (default).
• — The sensor is locked and no changes can be made.
• —The value associated with 0 V (4 mA) and 10 V (20 mA ) can be changed by teaching or manual adjustment, but no
sensor sengs can be changed through the menu.
When in mode, displays when the (SELECT)(TEACH) buon is pressed. The analog point displays when (+)(DISP) or (-)
(MODE) are pressed, but displays if the buons are pressed and held.
When in mode, displays when (+)(DISP) or (-)(MODE) are pressed and held. To access the manual adjust opons,
briey press and release (+)(DISP) or (-)(MODE). To enter TEACH mode, press the (SELECT)(TEACH) buon and hold for longer than 2
seconds.
Buon Instrucons
To enter mode, hold and press four mes. To enter mode, hold and press seven mes. Holding
and pressing four mes unlocks the sensor from either lock mode and the sensor displays .

3.5.2 One-Point TEACH
One-point TEACH mode denes the span of the analog output. One-point TEACH also denes the 5 V (12 mA) midpoint of the analog
output to center the analog output around a reference target posion.
