Pre-Installation Information
Barrier-free and ADA compliant
The SS-1/IR, SS-1/BIR and SS-1 (bowl only) Express® Lavatory Systems easily accommodate all
users. They meet ADA, ANSI and UFAS requirements for barrier-free clearances, reaches and controls.
Always check your local codes and ordinances for compliance.
NOTE: The SS-1/IR, SS-1/BIR and SS-1 (bowl only) Express® can be mounted with a rim height of
30" above the finished floor to comply with ADA guidelines for buildings and facilities; building
elements designed for children’s use.
Infrared sensor and solenoid (SS-1/IR only)
The sprayhead is controlled by a sensor and solenoid valve, enabling the user to activate the flow of
water without touching the lavatory system. The valve uses less than half the maximum of hot water
allowed by the ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90A-1980 Standard.
Infrared sensor and battery box (SS-1/BIR only)
The sprayhead is controlled by a separate sensor and and single-operation control box, enabling the user
to activate the flow of water without touching the lavatory system. The valve uses less than half the
maximum of hot water allowed by the ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-1989-Standard.
Supplies required for installation:
• 1/2" NPT hot and cold supply piping
• 1-1/2" NPT drain piping
• 110 volt electrical outlet for 110/24 VAC plug-in transformer (SS-1/IR only)
• Six 1/4" wall anchors (used with surface-mounted bracket only) or in-wall carrier such as
Josam 17100-202 or equivalent
• Six “AA” batteries (SS-1/BIR only)
• Two #10 x 1-1/2" long screws and anchors (SS-1/BIR with surface-mounted bracket only)
• OPTIONAL: (3) 1/4" wall anchors and fasteners to mount optional trap cover)
Express® Lavatory System Warranty
Bradley Corporation warrants to commercial and institutional purchasers only each unit free from defects in material and
workmanship under normal use and service upon the following terms and conditions:
1. This warranty is limited to replacing or repairing, at our option, transportation charges prepaid by the purchaser, any
Bradley unit or part thereof which our inspection shall show to have been defective within the limitations of this war-
ranty.
2. The period during which Express® Lavatory System components are warranted is as follows:
• Terreon® components warranted for five years
• All other Express® Lavatory System components warranted for one year.
3. This warranty does not cover installation or any other labor charges and does not apply to any units which have been
damaged by accident, abuse, improper installation or improper maintenance.
4. The replacement or repair of defective units as stated in this warranty shall constitute the sole remedy of the purchaser
and the sole liability of Bradley Corporation under this warranty. Bradley Corporation shall not otherwise be liable
under any indirect damages caused by defects in the repair or replacement thereof.
5. This warranty extends only to commercial and institutional purchaser and does not extend to any others, including con-
sumer customers of commercial institutional purchasers.
6. This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied, including any implied warranty of mer-
chantability or fitness for a particular purpose or otherwise.

Separate all parts from packaging and check each part with the drawing below. Make sure all parts
are accounted for before discarding any packaging material. If any parts are missing, do not attempt
to install your SS-Series Express Lavatory System until you obtain the missing parts.

Step 1: Rough in
NOTE: See Figure 1a below, or Figure 1b (for in-wall carrier rough-ins) or 1c for surface-mounted
bracket rough-ins) on page 6 when roughing in the SS-Series Express® Lavatory System.
IMPORTANT: Flush the supply lines before making connections. Debris in supply
lines will cause the valves to malfunction.
IMPORTANT: Turn OFF electrical power to the outlet when installing the SS-Series
Express® Lavatory System.
1. Rough in 1/2" NPT hot and cold supply lines through wall at dimensions shown in Figure 1a.
2. Rough in 1-1/2" dia. drain, stub out 1-1/2" from wall as shown in Figure 1a.
3. SS-1/IR ONLY: Install the 110 volt GFCI electrical outlet per local code at the location shown
in Figure 1a.
NOTE: If trap cover is supplied, refer to rough-in requirements shown in the Front View on page 4.

Step 2a: Mounting the bowl to the wall using in-wall carrier
NOTE: Refer to Step 2b on page 8 for bowl mounting
with surface-mounted bracket.
NOTE: Refer to Figure 3b on page 10 or Figure 3e on
page 11 for a view of the underside of the bowl.
1. Install an in-wall carrier (supplied by installer) to the
wall following the manufacturer’s instructions (ex.
Josam 17100-202 or equivalent).
NOTE: For standard height carrier mounting, do not
exceed the recommended 32" distance from the floor (see
Figure 1a on page 5).
2. Slide the bowl onto the in-wall carrier as shown in
Figure 2a.
• the bowl should be in far enough so that the holes
in the underside of the bowl are aligned with the
screws on the in-wall carrier arm (ref. 3-1/4" dim.
from wall to leveling screw).
3. Secure the bowl to the in-wall carrier from beneath
the bowl by tightening down the locking device on
each in-wall carrier arm.
4. Adjust the two leveling screws from beneath the
bowl on each in-wall carrier arm to level the bowl, if necessary. Refer to the in-wall carrier
instructions for additional mounting information.
Step 2b: Mounting the bowl to the wall using surface-mounted bracket
NOTE: Refer to Step 2a for bowl mounting with in-wall carrier.
NOTE: Refer to Figure 3b on page 9 or 3e on page 10 for a view of the underside of the bowl.
1. Install six 1/4" wall anchors (supplied by installer) at the locations shown in Figure 1c.
2. Use 1/4" screws (supplied by installer) and washers (supplied by Bradley) to attach the backplate
weldment to the wall (refer to Figure 1c).
3. Screw the two locking devices (supplied by Bradley) into the carrier arm at the center 1/4-20 tap
location shown in Figure 2b on page 8 (one locking device per arm).
4. Slide the carrier arms into the collars located on the backplate weldment. Refer to Figure 2b on
page 8 for correct orientation of the arms.
NOTE: The locking device on the carrier arm should be located 8-1/2" from the base of the back-
plate weldment (see Figure 2a).
5. Install four 1/4-20 set screws into the backplate collar (two set screws per collar) and tighten the
set screws.
6. Slide the SS-1 bowl onto the carrier arms (refer to Figure 2d ). The locking device should be
accessible from the underside of the bowl. Attach the four leveling screws to the underside of the
carrier arms. Place a level onto the top side of the bowl and adjust the leveling screws until the
bowl is level. The leveling screws should come in contact with the pads underneath the bowl.
7. After the bowl is level, unscrew the locking device until it is tight against the inside of the SS-1
sleeve tube (refer to Figures 2c and 2d on page 8).

Step 3a: Connecting the electrical power to the optional sprayhead
CAUTION: The Express® Lavatory System must be connected to the 24 VAC
Class II plug-in transformer provided. Connection to 110 VAC can
result in damage to the electronics and cause personal injury.
NOTE: For models with battery-operated infrared, refer to the instructions on page 12.
1. Connect the power cord’s two female connectors to the transformer’s two male connectors as
shown in Figure 3a below.

Step 3b: Connecting the optional Vernatherm™ valve (for models with Adaptive I.R.)
NOTES: Refer to Figures 3b, 3c and 3d below when installing the Vernatherm™ Valve. The red
marking on Vernatherm™ Mixing Valve indicates hot water supply inlet.
1. Mount the hanger bracket (at location shown) using 1/4"-20 screw and anchor (provided by installer).
2. Hang the Vernatherm™ valve assembly onto the bracket by sliding the valve into the bracket’s slot.
Secure the valve with the 1/4" U-bolt and two 1/4-20 nuts supplied as shown in Figure 3b.
3. Connect the flexible hoses installed to the Vernatherm™ valve to the hot and cold water supply
piping from the wall.
4. Attach the 1/2" female end of the flexible hose from the sprayhead to the Vernatherm valve using
the fiber washer attached to the hose.
5. OPTIONAL SINGLE-TEMPERED SUPPLY: Connect the 1/2" nipple to the stop/strainer/check
valve and then attach them to the 1/2" tempered stub-out from the wall. Using the fiber washer
attached to the hose, attach the 1/2" female end of the flex hose from the sprayhead to the 1/2"
nipple on the tempered line.

Step 3c: Installing the optional Vernatherm™ valve used with optional faucet
NOTE: Refer to Figure 3e below when installing the Vernatherm™ Valve.
1. Mount the hanger bracket (at the location shown on page 5) using a 1/4"-20 screw and anchor
(provided by installer).
2. Hang the Vernatherm™ valve assembly onto the bracket by sliding the valve into the bracket's
slot and secure with the 1/4" U-bolt and 1/4-20 nuts provided.
3. Connect the flexible hoses installed to the Vernatherm™ valve to the hot and cold water supply
piping from the wall.

Step 3d: Install BIR. Assembly
1. Carefully remove the battery box from the SS-1 bowl. Remove the four Phillips head screws
from the operation box cover
(see Figure 3f). Install six "AA"
alkaline batteries (not included).
2. Attach the 1/4" plastic tube
from the sprayhead to the 1/4"
tube fitting on the battery box
(Figure 3f). Temporarily support
the battery box until procedure #9.
3. Using a 1/4" screw and anchor
supplied by the installer, mount
the Vernatherm hanger bracket
to the wall at the location shown
in the rough-ins on page 5.
NOTE: If the optional surface-mtd. wall carrier is used, locate the Vernatherm hanger bracket on the
front face of the wall carrier at the bottom of the center slot.
4. Using a thread sealer, attach the 1/2" coupling to the Vernatherm body. Then, using a thread seal-
er, attach the male end of the 1/2" flexible hose to the 1/2" coupling (Figure 3g).
5. Using a thread sealer, attach the male end of the remaining two 1/2" flexible hoses to the
Vernatherm valve, one hose on the hot side and one hose on the cold side (Figure 3g).
6. Hang the Vernatherm valve with the hoses to the Vernatherm hanger bracket using the 1/4" U-
bolts and 1/4" nuts provided (Figure 3g).
7. Using a thread sealer, attach the male end of the 1/2" flexible hose from the battery box to the
1/2" coupling located on the Vernatherm valve. Attach the female end of the 1/2" flexible hose to
the 1/2" male fitting on the battery box using the fiber washer attached to the hose.

8. Using a thread sealer, attach the stop/strainers to the 1/2" hot and cold wall stub-outs. Secure the
female ends of the 1/2" flexible hoses from the Vernatherm valve to the respective stop/strainer
(Figure 3g).
9. Secure the battery box to the wall using #10 anchors (supplied by installer) at the two locations
shown in the rough-ins on page 5.
NOTE: For units with optional wall-mounted carrier, use spacers (part no. 110-221) (or a suitable
spacer supplied by the installer) behind the battery box before attaching it to the wall.
10. Test the unit for proper activation by passing your hand in front of each station’s sensor.
Step 3e: Install BIR Assembly (TL Option)
1. Carefully remove the battery box from the
SS-1 bowl. Remove the four Phillips head
screws from the operation box cover (see
Figure 3f on page 12). Install six "AA"
alkaline batteries (not included).
2. Attach the 1/4" plastic tube from the spray-
head to the 1/4" tube fitting on the battery
box (see Figure 3f on page 12).
Temporarily support the battery box until
procedure #5.
3. Using a thread sealer, attach the
check/stop/strainer to the 1/2" stub from the
wall (see Figure 3g on page 12).
4. Using a thread sealer, attach the male end
of the 1/2" flexible hose to the check/stop/strainer
(see Figure 3h). Attach the female end to the 1/2"
male fitting on the battery box using the fiber washer
attached to the hose.
5. Secure the battery box to the wall using #10 anchors
(supplied by installer) at the two locations shown in
the rough-ins on page 5.
6. Test the unit for proper activation by passing your
hand in front of each station’s sensor.
Step 4: Connecting the drain
1. Install the strainer in the drain hole (see Figure 4).
2. Beneath the bowl, install the 1/4" rubber washer onto
the strainer, and thread the tailpiece to the strainer.
3. Assemble the P-trap by connecting the 1-1/2" tubular
pipe to the tailpiece and to the 1-1/2" drain pipe
stubbed out of the wall.

Step 5: Completing installation
1. Turn on the water supply to the SS-Series
Express® Lavatory System and check for leaks.
2. Pass your hand in front of each station’s sensor
until all the air is purged from the lines and
water is flowing smoothly.
3. ACTIVATION RANGE ADJUSTMENT
NOTE: Complete only if range adjustment is required.
The range is factory preset at approximately six inches.
To adjust the activation range, follow the procedure
outlined below:
• Open the box cover per Step 3d, procedure #1, found on page 12 (see Figure 3f).
• Locate the activation adjustment potentiometer (see Figure 5).
IMPORTANT: The maximum rotation is only 3/4 of a turn.
NOTE: The label on the activation adjustment indicates the direction to increase (+) and decrease (-)
the range.
• Make the adjustment with a small slotted screwdriver.
• Set the range to “minimum” (-).
• Remove all objects from the basin
• Reset the sensor by removing one battery, waiting ten seconds and then reinstalling the battery.
• Slowly turn the adjustment to increase (+) the activation range. If the sensor activates, back the
adjustment off by 1/8 turn.
• Once the range is adjusted, reset the sensor again by removing one battery, waiting ten seconds and
then reinstalling the battery.
• Wait five seconds for the sensor to adapt, then test the range. If the range is okay, then replace
the valve box cover and tighten the screws.
4. OPTIONAL TRAP COVER: Position the trap cover and attach it to the wall with three 1/4" fas-
teners at the locations shown on page 4 (fasteners supplied by installer).
Check Valve Troubleshooting
If water just dribbles or does not flow from sprayhead:
1. Close the stops and check the valves that supply water to the lavatory system.
2. Inspect the stop/check valves for proper installation.
3. Remove the flexible hoses from the stop/check valves and clean the strainers, if necessary.
If water sprayhead delivers all hot or cold water:
1. Close the stops and check the valves that supply water to the lavatory system.
2. Inspect the stop/check valves for proper installation.
3. Remove the flexible hoses from the stop/check valves and clean the strainers, if necessary.
4. Inspect mixing valve for proper installation (see Vernatherm valve on page 16).
• A red marking indicates the hot inlet.

Cleaning and Maintenance Instructions
IMPORTANT: Strong alkaline or acid-based chemicals and cleansers should not be used
to clean Terreon®. If these chemicals come in contact with the Terreon® surface, wipe off
the surface immediately and flush with soapy water.
Terreon® and trap cover maintenance
The bowl and sprayhead are constructed of Terreon®, a densified solid surface material composed of an
acrylic modified polyester resin. Terreon® is resistant to chemicals, stains, burns and impact. Surface
damage can be easily repaired with everyday cleaners or fine grit abrasives. The trap cover is made
of an acrylic/ABS laminate, and will not chip, peel or flake. With regular cleaning, your Terreon®
fixture will provide years of dependable service.
Cleaning
• Daily Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
• Weekly Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and a household liquid detergent.
Stubborn stains can be removed as follows:
1. Using a #7448 Scotch-Brite® pad, scrub with an abrasive cleanser such as Ajax®,
Comet® or Soft Scrub® and water.
2. Clean thoroughly with soapy water and allow to dry.
• Scorch Marks: Although Terreon® will not burn, a lit cigarette in contact with Terreon® could
leave a scorch mark. Scorch marks can be removed by buffing with a #7448 Scotch-Brite pad or
with an abrasive cleaner.
•Repair kit: In the unlikely event your Terreon® surface becomes damaged, it can easily and
inexpensively be repaired. Contact your Bradley representative to order a repair kit and be sure
to specify color when ordering.
Trap cover cleaning
IMPORTANT: Do not use abrasive cleansers to clean the trap cover. Abrasive cleaners
can mar the surface.
•Graffiti/Vandalism: If vandals create markings on the trap cover, Bradley recommends using
Motsenbocker’s LIFT OFF® to remove ink and spray paint. Remover #3 is for ink and markers, and
Remover #4 is for spray paint. Motsenbocker’s LIFT OFF® can be ordered through Sanitary
Maintenance Service Inc. (call 1-800-451-5523 x 425 or visit
www.santitarymaintenance.com/product.htm for ordering information). After cleaning with LIFT
OFF®, give the trap cover a final thorough cleaning with a liquid tub and tile cleaner to remove
soil and maintain the glossy finish.

Vernatherm™ Mixing Valve Maintenance and Service
*Repair kit S45-049 is pre-packaged and includes O-Ring, Flip Ring, Power Element and Spring.
Maintenance Instructions
1. Disassemble the Vernatherm™ Valve as shown,
being careful not to damage the power element.
Replace the element, if necessary.
2. If necessary, remove the old flip ring and replace
with a new ring.
NOTE: An old or worn flip ring may cause temperature
fluctuation and/or water chatter.
3. Reassemble the power element and valve body.
Apply grease to the main valve slide and gently ease
into position, rotating so that grease is applied to the
flip ring. Do not force the slide as this may push the
flip ring from its position. To test, rotate the slide; a
slight drag should be felt when correctly installed.
4. Reassemble the valve.
Service Suggestions
When servicing the valve, make sure it is installed in the correct position. The most common error
occurs when the valve is installed in the reversed position, that is, the hot line is connected to the cold
line and the cold is connected to the hot.
NOTE: A red marking indicates the hot side of the valve.

reversed position.
