information about what to expect before purchasing the machine.

1. Introduction
The Canon imagePRESS 1110+ Customer Expectations Document contains
information about the features and capabilities of the Canon imagePRESS 1110+.
This document should be used as part of the presale and pre-installation planning
process to help clarify the requirements and responsibilities associated with
supporting, owning, and operating the imagePRESS 1110+. It is also
recommended that those interested in purchasing the imagePRESS 1110+ have,
and familiarize themselves with, the information in this document prior to making
their purchase.
2. Product Overview
The Canon imagePRESS 1110+ brings the following capabilities to the production
printing environment:
•Printing speeds of up to 110 ppm (pages per minute) are achievable, depending
on the selected media.
•A maximum paper size of 13” x 19.2” is supported. Multiple paper sources,
complemented by air-assisted feeding, can hold a maximum of approximately
14,000 sheets of paper for reliability and over 1.5 hours of uninterrupted
production.
•Prints in up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi (dots per inch) print resolution, and delivers
sharp text and images with the twin sleeve developing system.
•Re-engineered drum shaft increases halftone density for print quality consistency.
•Precision Printing – Accurate registration, which is automatically adjusted during
print runs, ensures consistency at high speeds.
•Micro Toner Technology – A mono-component toner enables the machine to
reproduce pure, rich black consistently and across a wide range of media.
•A variety of finishing options are available including: perfect binder, multi-folding
unit, saddle stitch finisher, punching unit, one- or three-edge trimmer, and
high-capacity stacker.

2.2 Offset Press vs. Digital imagePRESS
Offset printing is a technique that transfers (or “offsets”) an inked image from a
plate to a rubber blanket, and then to the printing surface. This enables the offset
press to maintain a consistent and high image quality over long print runs because
the plate never touches the paper. The process requires a substantial investment
in equipment and setup expense to achieve these results.
Adigital press uses an electrostatic process to produce “offset-like” image quality
at a fraction of the cost of an offset press. In the imagePRESS 1110+ digital press,
the drum is imaged; the toner is applied, and then transferred to the ITB
(Intermediate Transfer Belt). The ITB then transfers the toner to the paper in one
single pass. The small toner particle size provides high print quality with crisp thin
lines, high quality characters, smooth corners, and clean gradient transitions,
closer to that of an offset press.

2.3 Image Stabilization Control
The imagePRESS 1110+ contains four separate skew adjustment rollers which
ensure that an image is placed in the same location on every sheet of paper.
Accurate front to back registration is actively adjusted during print runs, and
consistency is maintained at high speeds with non-stop operation. This works
effectively for thin paper as well. Skew adjustment and shift rollers feed thin paper
accurately without folding or crumpling.
2.4 Customer-Defined Image Quality Adjustments and Recommendations
Customer-defined image quality adjustments enable the customer to enhance the
productivity of the machine. There are several user modes, such as the Device
Management Settings and Paper Type Management Settings modes, which
provide adjustment functions, to help maintain the desired image quality for each
job. These settings also aim at reproducing optimal images under variable factors
(i.e., changes in the environment).
To achieve the best image quality the following factors are recommended:
•Tighter control of the temperature and humidity will result in tighter image quality
consistency in the device.
•The device must be properly maintained, which includes performing preventative
maintenance as scheduled.
•The customer should perform an Auto Gradation Adjustment once a day and
whenever a change in print quality is noticed. Use a high-quality, 17 to 28 lb bond
(64 to 105 g/m2), thin or plain, 11” x 17” or LTR sized paper when performing an
Auto Gradation Adjustment.
2.5 Notes on the Hard Disk
Do not turn the machine OFF via the main power switch. Turning the machine OFF
via the power switch may negatively impact the performance and life of the drive.
Make sure to use the Control Panel Power Switch on the operating console to turn
OFF the machine properly. For instructions on shutting down the machine properly,
see the Introduction to the Machine e-Manual.
It is strongly recommended that the Administrator of the machine back up
important data, such as Inbox or Address Book contents, using the machine’s
System Administrator mode periodically.

2.6 Professional Input/Output Accessories
The imagePRESS 1110+ features many robust input and output accessories that
allow customers working in production environments to complete large jobs directly
from the machine. An ARCnet (Attachable Resource Computer Network)
communications cable is used to connect the accessories to the main unit. The
ARCnet cable provides the main unit’s engine information about the accessories
that are attached and if they are working properly. The ARCnet cable also enables
seamless communication between the main unit and the accessories, as there is
no significant communication delay, regardless of the many accessories that are
connected.

3.3 Installation and Service Space
The site must provide enough space for unrestricted operation, maintenance work,
and proper ventilation. The machine dimensions are in diagrams on the following
pages. Every attempt should be made to install the equipment in a room that is
large enough to allow for proper servicing and maintenance of the equipment, and
ensure that issues, such as ventilation, odors, and dust accumulation will not be a
concern.
IMPORTANT
•Keep the back of the machine at least 39.4” (1,000 mm) away from a wall.
•Installation space from the back of the machine can be reduced from 39.4”
(1,000 mm) to 31.5” (800 mm) if a technician finds that there are no other space
concerns.
•The floor must be level (with no bows) and flat for the stabilization and support of
the machine.

3.3.1 Minimum Space Requirements to Transport the Machine and Turn Hallway
Corners
The following table represents the minimum width that is necessary to turn
hallway corners and transport the machine to its final installation site.
IMPORTANT
•The minimum doorway opening that the machine passes through prior to
installation must be at least 36” wide.
•The minimum width required for turning is the diagonal length of each piece of
equipment + 19 3/4" (500 mm).
•The machine should not be moved once it is in place.

3.4 Recommended Floor Space Requirements
For a fully configured imagePRESS 1110+, it is recommended that there be at
least 45’ (W) x 12’ (D) of floor space.
IMPORTANT
•The imagePRESS 1110+ was created to be modular in design. Floor space,
budget, monthly copy/print volume, and applications will determine which
configuration works best.
•If the SDD Square Fold Booklet-Maker with Two-Knife Trimmer is attached to the
machine, make sure that there is approximately 41.2” (1,046 mm) of space
added to the installation space and floor design.
•Some type of finishing option (Saddle Finisher-AK2, Finisher-AK1, or High
Capacity Stacker-E1) is required.
•Any configuration of up to 3-POD Decks-C1 (at least one POD Deck must be
attached) and 2-High Capacity Stackers-E1 may be attached to the machine at
once. The Saddle Finisher-AK2, Booklet Trimmer-D1, and Two-Knife Booklet
Trimmer-A1 may be connected at the same time as well.
3.5 Floor Structure Requirements
The floor on which this machine is installed must have strength of at least
92.2 lb/ft2(450 kg/m2). If the floor does not have this level of strength, consult a
building contractor before installing the machine.
The weight of the machine is distributed on the floor through the adjusters and
wheels. Do not install the machine on an unstable floor or platform.

3.6 Network Connectivity
A standard 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface (RJ-45 jack) for device installation,
monitoring, and Mail Box access, via the Remote UI, ships standard with all
configurations.
A USB 2.0 High-Speed interface port ships standard with all configurations for
direct connection to centralized environments that want to drive all jobs through a
single host PC.
4. Power/Electrical Requirements
The imagePRESS 1110+ requires a NEMA L14-30 receptacle for the main unit,
ARCnet accessory configuration, and proper operation.

IMPORTANT
•We recommend an additional standard 120 V/15 A outlet for service tools, such
as a laptop computer or vacuum that may be used when servicing or configuring
the machine.
•Use only dedicated outlets for the main unit and each optional accessory. Do not
use extension cords.
NOTE
The Puncher Unit-BS1, Color Image Reader-L1 with feeder, Paper Folding
Unit-F1, and Booklet Trimmer-D1 do not require any additional outlets.
The following illustration shows the relative position of the power outlets, and
voltage requirements of each optional accessory item.
IMPORTANT
•Phase converters and step down transformers are not supported.
•Canon USA strongly recommends that dedicated and properly grounded outlets
be provided for the devices mentioned above. The ground connection serves to
provide the internal electronics with a reference voltage. Faulty or poor ground
sources will cause this reference voltage to fall into a range that no longer serves
as a reliable reference voltage. The internal logic and programming of the
imagePRESS 1110+ will not perform reliably because there is an insufficient
difference between the internal operating signal voltages and the poor ground
reference signal. A qualified electrician can measure and provide the ground
source that the imagePRESS 1110+ or any computer controlled office equipment
requires.
•Before installation, confirm that all necessary receptacles are available.

5. Environmental Factors and Requirements
Optimum Temperature Range: Between 68°F (20°C) and 80.6°F (27°C)*
Optimum Humidity Range: Between 30% and 70%
Atmospheric Pressure: 810.6 to 1,013 hPa (0.8 to 1.0 atm)
Noise (sound level): Standby: 68 dB; Operating: 83 dB
Ozone Emissions: 0.01 ppm (parts per million) or less (initial startup)
0.35 ppm or less (after a short break-in period)

environment, see “Operating the Machine in a
Low Temperature Environment,” on p. 20.
NOTE
It may be necessary to use a humidifier or dehumidifier to attain the proper
humidity levels for optimal machine performance.
5.1 Temperature and Humidity Conditions
The optimal humidity range is 30% to 70% RH (Relative Humidity) with a room
temperature of 68°F to 80.6°F (20°C to 27°C).
The machine contains intelligent technology that can sense the environmental
temperature, and optimize its performance if operated outside the temperature
range. However, productivity, paper feeding, and image quality may be affected if
the machine is operated outside of these guidelines.
The machine should not be installed in locations with significant shifts in
temperature or humidity. Areas containing water, or equipment that can
significantly alter room temperature or humidity, such as a heater, stove, or
portable air conditioner, should be avoided, unless proper environmental control is
available to achieve maximum productivity or quality capability.
The optimal humidity range for storing paper is 30% to 70% RH (Relative Humidity)
with a room temperature of 68°F to 80.6°F (20°C to 27°C). Storing paper in a
location that does not meet these specifications may affect paper feeding and
image quality. For example, if the humidity is too high, paper curling and paper
jams will increase. If the humidity is too low, paper may shrink or lose resistance,
and toner will not adhere to the paper as well.

5.1.1 Operating the Machine in a Low Temperature Environment
It is best to run the machine at a room temperature that falls within the optimal
range (68°F to 80.6°F (20°C to 27°C)); however, if a low temperature
environment cannot be avoided, and depending on the job criteria (either print
speed or image quality), set the machine to account for the temperature of the
room in which the machine is located.
The Adjust Fixing for Natural Conditions mode in Device Management Settings in
System Settings (from the Additional Functions screen) enables the machine to
run at a fixed speed at any ambient temperature, or the machine can be adjusted
to run at a speed that maximizes the machine’s productivity or image quality
output results.
There are three settings in the Adjust Fixing for Natural Conditions mode that can
improve print speed or image quality based on environmental conditions and job
criteria.
[Fixing Priority]: This mode is the default setting. Select this mode if
image quality has priority over print speed. The machine
calibrates the fixing temperature to adjust for the type of
media you select for the job, and the ambient
temperature. This mode provides the highest level of
quality, but has an impact on productivity.
[Standard]: Select this mode to achieve the engine’s rated speed
when the machine is running at a room temperature
between 59°F and 68°F (15°C and 20°C), regardless of
the selected.
[Productivity Priority]: If the room temperature is below 59°F (15°C), select this
mode to run the machine at a constant fixing
temperature. This mode achieves output results at the
engine’s rated speed, but because of the room
temperature, it has an impact on image quality.
IMPORTANT
•It is strongly recommended to make several test prints in each mode to
determine the customer’s desired image quality results.
•The Adjust Fixing for Natural Conditions mode is only available if it is enabled in
the Service Mode.
