Manufacturer’s Reference:
A Counter Intercom System consisting of GEC881/GEC882 and PA24W15V fulfils the requirements of the
EU-standard 89/336/EEC.
Application:
With regard to the CE mark, the Counter Intercom is suitable for the following types of application: residential
buildings, office and commercial premises, small businesses and industrial premises with public low-voltage mains
supply.
Therefore this equipment is CE-labelled.

Cleaning the station
Use a damp cloth to clean the station when required. Do not use water, liquid detergent or paper towels to clean the
station!
PRECAUTIONS
To prevent defects, do not expose the station to rain or moisture. Do not open the station. Refer servicing to qualified
personnel only.
■ Do not connect ethernet devises! This can damage the operator staion and / or the enternet devices
■ Do not use the station near water, e.g. near a bathtub, pool, kitchen sink, laundry tub, swimming pool or in a wet
basement.
■ Do not place the station on an unstable cart, stand, or table. If the station falls, it can injure a person and cause
serious damage to the appliance.
■ Do not install the station in a location near heat sources such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct
sunlight, or excessive dust or mechanical vibration or shock.
■ Mounting and installation of the Counter Intercom GEC 880 and of the equipment may be carried out by authorised
service personnel only when the power supply is unplugged.
■ The counter intercom GEC 880 may be opened only in electrostatic protected areas.
On the bottom of the station a label displays the station type and serial number for reference.
Please keep this description in safe custody!
Please do not give users / operators access to this manual. This will prevent “de-parametrisation“ by the
customer and may you some on-site service lookups.

Digital desktop counter intercom systems fulfill the widest variety of requirements – from security
solutions in banks to ski-lift stations and ticket counters to isolation wards in hospitals.
The modular construction of the system allows any number of desktop counter intercom systems to
be combined into one system. The basic unit is a digital intercom station, which is available in two
different versions (with and without gooseneck). Therefore it is very simple to select the optimum
station for every counter requirement.
The Stations
GEC 881
Digital desktop counter call station with plastic reinforced silicon keypad and
built-in microphone with omnidirectional characteristic for unrestricted
speech. Keypad with 15 keys, printed with easily understood pictograms.
Extent of supply:
Wall mounting box for surface mounting
3 m connection cable.
Further accessories must be ordered separately.
GEC 882
Digital desktop counter call station with plastic reinforced silicon keypad,
antitilt device and cardioid type goose neck microphone. Keypad with 15
keys, printed with easily understood non-verbal pictograms.
Extent of supply:
Wall mounting box for surface mounting
3 m connection cable.
Further accessories must be ordered separately.

Power supply unit
24 W high-efficiency switched-mode power supply. The power cable must be ordered seperately

Please use only DC power supplies with 12 to 18 V sec. and 1.2 A min. The Counter Intercom station is
not qualified for AC supply or DC supply exceeding 18 V.
Wall socket
The operator station must be connected to the wall socket via the supplied cable (CAT6, straight, not
crossed).
The outside loudspeaker, microphone and bell button are connected to the wall socket. Pin assignment
see ”Components and cabling” above.
Attention: Do not mis-connect the wires of the outside microphone. Polarity must be observed.
However, polarity of the outside loudspeaker is not relevant.
Attention: If you connect a crossed-out RJ45 cable, irreparable damage to the Intercom station may
occur!

Mounting of the client side
The loudspeaker must be mounted at least 1 m / 40 inches away from the microphone. If possible, the
loudspeaker should not face the microphone directly because this leads to an echo of the operator
voice at the inside station.
1. Mounting version A: Loudspeaker at the top (best for acoustic separation of multiple queues)
2. Mounting version B: Loudspeaker at the side in level of ears (best for single queue situations)
If possible, the microphone should be mounted at the bottom of the counter, in direction to the client.
If this is not possible, the microphone has to be mounted aside in direction to the client. The closer the
microphone is mounted to the clients mouth, the lower the volume required at the operator station.

Microphone client side
The outside microphone should not be mounted nearby the outside loudspeaker and, most notably, it
should not face the sound beam of the speaker(s). The call station will try to suppress audible feedback
at any time and therefore will reduce the outside volume level at situations with high acoustic coupling.
If the outside microphone is installed very near to the outside speaker, maximum outside volume level
will not be possible.
Mouse Microphone Q400
This microphone has a special directional characteristic as shown in the picture. It should be mounted
in such a way, that the speech of the client enters the microphone in direction of the arrows. The
microphone can also be used for outdoor mounting, but it must be protected against rain and moisture.

Build-in Microphone MIC 480
The build-in microphone is designed to fit panels up to 10 mm (0.4 inch) thick. Technical data see page 5 .
Note: To fullfill the IP53-classification the opening of the microphone must face to the bottom.

Positioning of the client side micophon
When mounting the client side microphone a minimum distance (l) between client side and service side
opening must be insured.
If the distance is too small, the audio quality decreases. The two most common cases are shown in the
following figures.

For a the optimal audio quality don‘t change the parameters SZE, AEC, NLP. Normaly with the default
value SZE = 5, AEC = 3 and NLP = 3 you get the best quality (paramters see page 11).

Loudspeaker client side
The outside loudspeaker must have 4 to 16 ohms impedance and shall not be mounted to far from the
wall socket, because otherwise a larger cable diameter is required. For greater distances a 16 Ohm
loudspeaker is preferable. This loudspeaker allows a line length up to 4 times as large as compared to
a 4 ohm loudspeaker.
Connection of multiple loudspeakers in series or parallel is allowed as long as the impedance of the
entire circuit does not drop below 4 ohms.

When using line arrays (like e.g. AL10-16) the directivity of the array should be used to address only
the parts of the outside area, in which the customer is situated. Depending on the building construction
the line array is positioned in horizontally or vertically (see ”Mounting of the client side” on page 8).

If operating more than one call stations GEC 882 side by side, feature “AHC” (via parameter “NLP” in
service mode) has to be switched on (value 3 = already active in standard), to compensate for the
acoustic coupling between the call stations (see page 11).

SERVICE MODE
The call station is in USER MODE after booting. Via a special key combination unknown to operators
you can enter the so-called SERVICE MODE, where more settings than in USER MODE can be
applied. All settings are entered via the keyboard.
Via the key combination + + (press simultaneously with key first – easily to be remembered
– because situated in a diagonal row) you can switch to SERVICE MODE and back to USER MODE.
As long as the call station is in service mode, each of the 6 digits of the display will show a dot (e.g.
S.T.D.B.Y. instead of STDBY).
With the key it is possible to scroll through the list of parameters. With the keys andthe value
of the individual parameters can be changed.

Parameter Reset
It is possible to reset all parameters to the factory presets. For this the following procedure is carried
out:
Unplug the power supply
Press and hold down the following buttons + + 
Reconnect the power supply
The display shows RESET for one second.
Examples
Examples for setting the correct values:
Situation:
The internal microphone of the GEC 881 / GEC 882 is picking up too much noise from distant sources.
A characteristic which is more noise cancelling is desired.
Remedy: Increase the value of parameter SZI. Be careful: the speaker has to reduce the distance from
his mouth to the internal microphone now.
Situation: Bad sound quality during communication.
Remedy A: Enter Service Mode and check if all parameters are set to their default values. The default
values provide the best sound quality and should only be changed on special demand. Use the
”Parameter Reset” if required.
Remedy B: Check if all cabling is correct. Most importantly the GND connection (shield-GND
connected to pin 8 of the modular socket) and if the RJ45-cable is plugged in the station securely.
