Pop-Top Membrane Holder 13 mm
Instructions for Use
Introduction
Important
Read these instructions carefully before using the products.
Intended use
The products are intended for research use only, and shall not be
used in any clinical or in vitro procedures for diagnostic purposes.
Safety
For use and handling of the products in a safe way, either refer to the
Safety section in these instructions or to the Safety Data Sheets
where applicable.
Description
Pop-Top Filter Holders are designed for filtration of small volumes of
liquids using positive pressure. These holders are used for filtering
particulate from a fluid or gas stream, or for concentrating the partic-
ulate onto a filter surface for further examination. Pop-Top Filter
Holders accommodate membrane filters such as polycarbonate,
PTFE, nylon, and cellulose ester-based media, as well as depth filters
such as glass fiber and fibrous polyester.
Pop-Top Filter Holders are easily connected together for serial filtra-
tion since the inlet is a female Luer slip fitting and the outlet is a male
Luer slip fitting. Prefilters (diameter 10 mm when used with a
membrane) may be used to extend membrane life.
The figure below shows an expanded view of the Pop-Top Filter
Holder.

Operating instructions
Assembly and Loading
Step Action
1 Remove the three parts of the Pop-Top holder from its plastic
bag.
2 If using a prefilter, place it in the center hole depression of the
Pop-Top holder cap before loading the membrane.
3 Remove the membrane with its thick, colored separator paper
from the storage box with blunt tipped forceps. Slip one tong of
the forceps between the membrane and paper.
NOTICE
It is important to use blunt tipped
forceps to avoid damaging the
membrane.
4 Pick up the Pop-Top base in one hand and place the membrane
on the support grid right side up.
Note:
Generally, the membrane is packaged with the top side of the
filter facing up, and you should maintain this orientation when
assembling it into the filter holder.
5 For liquid filtration, wetting the membrane with clean filtration
liquid can make it easier to load.
6 Position the Pop-Top cap over the base and press down until it
snaps in place.
cytiva.com 29690340 AB
Step Action
7 Slip the Pop-Top clamp ring over the cap. Slide the clamp ring
around the "fingers" of the cap until it is firmly seated.
Autoclaving
Pop-Top holders, both unloaded or loaded with Whatman™
membranes, can be repeatedly autoclaved at 121°C (250°F) for 15
minutes at 0.1 MPa (1.0 bar, 15 psi).
When autoclaving loaded Pop-Top holders, loosen the clamp ring
about half way from the cap fingers. Reseat clamp ring after auto-
claving.
Operating precautions
•Make sure that flow direction is from the inlet in the cap (female
Luer slip fitting) to the outlet in the base (male Luer slip fitting).
NOTICE
Flow in the opposite, unsupported direction
could rupture the membrane.
•Make sure the clamp ring is flushed with the top of the cap
"fingers" before applying pressure so that maximum leak tight-
ness is achieved.
CAUTION
Never operate the holder above 0.34 MPa
(3.4 bar, 50 psi) at 38°C (100°F).
CAUTION
Never use the holder with fluid temperatures
over 140°C (285°F).
Disassembly
To disassemble the product, follow the instructions below.
Step Action
1 Slide the clamp ring away from the "fingers" of the cap.
2 Grip the cap in one hand using the thumb and forefinger. With
the other hand, apply pressure (torque) to the male Luer exten-
sion with the forefinger and thumb until the base snaps loose.
Cleaning
To clean the holder, follow the steps below.
Step Action
1 Completely disassemble the holder.
2 Wash all parts with a suitable solvent (isopropyl alcohol, for
example). If scrubbing is required, use a soft bristle brush.
NOTICE
Do not use acetone as this can harm the
holder.
3 Rinse the disassembled holder in clean water and air dry.
4 Store the disassembled holder in a plastic bag or other clean
receptacle.
Note:
If the holder is pre-loaded and autoclaved, do not store for an
extended period above normal room temperature as, over
time, higher temperatures may cause the membrane to stick to
the o-rings and cause issues during disassembly.
