2 WARRANTY INFORMATION
All of our products come with a one-year warranty from the original date of purchase against defects in workmanship
and materials. If you have warranty or support issues, please contact us at:

1. DEFENDER® products are guaranteed for a period of one year from the date of purchase against defects in
workmanship and materials. This warranty is limited to the repair, replacement or refund of the purchase price
at DEFENDER®’s option.
2. This warranty becomes void if the product shows evidence of having been misused, mishandled or tampered
with contrary to the applicable instruction manual.
3. Routine cleaning, normal cosmetic, and mechanical wear and tear are not covered under the terms of this
warranty.
4. The warranty expressly provided for herein is the sole warranty provided in connection with the product itself
and no other warranty, expressed or implied is provided. DEFENDER® assumes no responsibilities for any other
claims not specifically mentioned in this warranty.
5. The warranty does not cover shipping costs, insurance or any other incidental charges.
6. You MUST contact DEFENDER® before sending any product back for repair. You will be sent a Return
Authorization Number with return instructions. When returning the product for warranty service, please pack it
carefully in the original box with all supplied accessories, and enclose your original receipt or copy, and a brief
explanation of the problem (include the RA#).
7. This warranty is valid in Canada and the continental US.
8. This warranty cannot be re-issued.
9. Tearing the tamper-proof sticker on the NVR cases will void the product warranty.

1. Wireless cameras require a wired connection to a power outlet.
2. When viewing remotely: Video quality and connectivity is dependent on network performance. We recommend
a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps for optimal video performance.
3. DEFENDER® highly recommends the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with surge protection for
all products.
4. Viewing and recording in 4 MP (2688*1520) resolution should be limited to one camera. For system using up
to four cameras, VGA resolution is recommended for optimal video performance.
5. The product requires a broadband router and broadband internet connection – not included.
6. DEFENDER® does not endorse any DEFENDER® products for illegal activities.
7. DEFENDER® is not responsible or liable in any way for any damage, vandalism, theft or any other action that
may occur while a DEFENDER® product is in use by the purchaser.

4 SAF ET Y WARNI NGS
We recommend using an uninterruptable power supply (UPS): Connecting your NVR and cameras to a
UPS allow continuous use during a power outage. The remaining power duration will depend on the UPS
used.
Use the Power Supply/Adapter provided: Do not use these products with a power supply that exceed the
specified voltage.
Do not install the NVR in a wet or dusty area: Avoid placing the NVR in areas like a damp basement or
dusty attic.
Do not expose the NVR to rain or use near water: If the NVR is exposed to water, unplug the device and
contact Customer Support.
Do not install the NVR near heat sources: Avoid placing the NVR near any heat sources like stoves, heat
registers, radiators, or electronic (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
Install the NVR in an area with good air circulation:The internal hard drive generates heat during operation
for video storage. Do not block the vents on the device. Vents are used to reduce heat while the device is
running. Place the NVR in a well-ventilated area.
Handle with care: The device may not work properly if dropped or damaged. If the device is not working
correctly, unplug the device and contact Customer Support. Unplug the device when moving.
Cleaning: Unplug the device before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth only, for
cleaning.
Do not insert metal into the NVR case or its openings: Inserting metal into the NVR may cause electrical
shock.
Do not remove the NVR cover: Do not attempt to open the NVR, if the device is not working properly, contact
Customer Support. Opening the NVR may cause electrical shock.

7.1 NVR

7.2 Camera
Cameras have an Ethernet cable attachment that is optional. Cameras can be connected using a CAT5
(RJ45) cable (not included) from the camera to your modem/router. This changes the connection to wired.
The camera should also be plugged into a power source using the power adapter (included).

7.3 Set up
This setup method requires a monitor/TV with an HDMI or VGA connection (not included). To setup the
system without using a monitor/TV, see the SmartSignal Mobile App manual.
Be for e you start:
Ensure all components are included in your kit
You will need a monitor/TV with an HDMI or VGA connection (not included) – ensure the monitor/TV is
turned off when connecting the NVR
Before installing your cameras, test all connections during setup
Ensure that you have enough power outlets for the monitor/TV, cameras, and NVR unit. Your NVR
needs to be setup near your modem/router – you will need to connect your NVR unit to your
modem/router using the Ethernet cable (included).
Connections may vary by model
All cables and wires are labeled and colour coded to the NVR
unit to make connecting your system easy.
1. Connect the following components to your NVR:
A. Monitor/TV leave the monitor/TV powered off
until the NVR is turned on
B. Modem/Router
C. Mouse
D. NVR Power Supply
2. Plug the NVR unit into a power outlet and the unit will turn
on automatically.
3. Turn on the monitor/TV
4. Plug each camera into a power supply it is important
to test each camera before installing
5. Follow the Setup Wizard on-screen instructions
7.4 Shut Down
1. Right click the mouse anywhere on the screen to open the Quick Menu:MAIN MENU >
OPERATION > SHUT DOWN
2. Click Shut Down to turn the system off. To turn the system back on unplug the power adapter
and plug it back in, the NVR unit will power back on automatically.

7.5 Mouse Controls
Use the mouse to access the Main Menu, Command & Feature buttons, and to use the on-screen Keyboard.
1. LEFT BUTTO N
From the Live View screen, double click on a Channel
(Camera) to view in full screen. Click again to return to the
multi view screen.
2. RIG HT BUTTO N
Click on any screen to open the Quick Menu options.
When in a menu screen, click to return to the previous
screen.
3. SCRO LLW HE EL
In the Live View screen, use the scroll wheel to zoom in/out.
7.6 On-screen Keyboard
Click (left button) in an input field to open the on-screen
Keyboard. This will allow you to enter the required
information.

8 ST AR T UP
8.1 Device Initialization (Login Setup)
PASS WORD CREAT ION
During the initial setup of the system you will need to setup
a Password. The default password is admin.
Follow the on-screen instructions to set a password that is
easier for you to remember but hard for others to guess. The
system will show a password strength indicator to show you
how effective your password is.
Enter a Prompt Question that will remind you what your password is.
Click Next.
UNL OCK PAT TERN
Set up a pattern to login or unlock your system. Patterns are
not as secure as a password.
Follow the on-screen instruction to set a pattern unlock or
click Skip to use your password.
PASS WORD PROTECTION
There are two options for accessing the system if you have
forgotten your password or unlock pattern: Email or Security
Question.
Both options cannot be set at the same time.
Email: Enter an email address to have the reset
password message sent. This is the Account Email
address.
Security Questions: Select three questions and enter your answers.
AUTO-CHE CK FOR UPDATES
When selected the system will notify you when an
update is available for your system.
Click Next to open the Startup Wizard.

8.2 Startup Wizard
The Setup Wizard is designed to make starting your system quick and easy. By default, when the system is
powered on for the first time the Setup Wizard will launch automatically. Advanced settings are available from
the Main Menu if additional setup is required. See section 10 Main Menu & Advanced Setupfor
instructions.

GENERAL SETTI NGS
General Tab
De viceNa me:
The default name is NVR however it can be changed to a name of your choice
up to a maximum of 32 characters.
De viceNo .:
Can be used when you have multiple devices on your network to easily identify
this device or left as the default.
Langua ge:
English is the only language option available on this device.
Vid eo Standa rd:
Use the drop down to select from the options:
NTSC – North American video format
PAL – European video format
If you are located in North America and select PAL the live stream of
your cameras will stop.
HDDFull:
Use the drop down to select if the system will record when the hard drive is full:
BACK Click to return to the previous setup step.
NEXTClick to move to the next setup step.
CANCE L Click to exit the Setup Wizard.

Overwrite – the system will continue to record over the oldest footage
when the hard drive is full
Stop Recording – the system will stop recording until space is made
available on the hard drive
Pack Du ration:
This is the length of each video file when footage is saved to a USB drive.
Motion events shorter than the pack duration are not affected when playback
is selected. The default for this option does not need to be changed.
In stantP la yback:
The number of minutes the system will rewind when Playback is selected.
AutoLogout:
The number of minutes before the system will log out when not in use. You will
need to enter your password to log back into the system.
Monitor Ch anne ls:
Click the Monitor Channels button to select the Channels (Cameras) that
should be monitored when the system logs out.
Click the Channel (Camera) checkboxes or select All.
IP CT im eS ync:
This is the time interval for when the data is synchronized within your system.
The default for this option does not need to be changed.
Na vig ationBa r:
If selected the Navigation Bar can be accessed on the Live View screen
by moving the mouse pointer to the top of the camera view. If not selected the
Navigation Bar cannot be accessed. This setting can also be changed from:
SYSTEM > SETTINGS > GENERAL > GENERAL TAB
MouseS ensit iv it y:
Slide the scroll bar between Slow and Fast to find your optimal setting for how
the mouse pointer moves on the screen.
De fault:
Click to change back to default settings.
Apply:
Click to apply your changes without leaving the screen.

Date & Time Tab
Da teFor mat:
Use the drop down to select the date format. This is how the date will appear on-screen.
Tim eFor mat:
Select the Clock format using the drop down to select 24 hour or 12 hour clock.
Da teS eparator:
Select the format for how the Year, Month, and Day will be separated using the drop
down to select from the options.
SystemT im e:
Use the drop down to select your time zone. This will set the System Time which is
used to determine the correct time of recordings.
Save:
Click Save to update the Date & Time selections.
DS T:
If selected Daylight-Saving Time will be turned on and the system will automatically
adjust the hour for your time zone based on the DST settings entered. Time will
update only if the system is connected to the Internet.
DS TT ype:
Click to select how the DST will be updated by selecting Week or Date.
Week
Select the Month, Recurrence, Day, and enter the Time when DST Starts and
Ends. The time will automatically adjust based on these settings.
Date
Enter the Date and Time when DST Starts and End. The time will automatically adjust
based on these settings.
NT P:
The Network Time Protocol is automatically setup based on your network. These
settings do not need to be adjusted.
De fault:
Click to change back to the default settings.
Apply:
Click to apply your changes without leaving the screen.

Holiday Tab
You can setup breaks in the recording schedule using the Holiday feature. When a holiday is setup the
system will stop recording during the dates entered and will resume when the holiday is over. Holidays
will override the regular Schedule setup.
Ho lid ayL ist:
HOLIDAY LIST: Name of the holiday (example: Weekdays)
DATE: Dates the system will not record.
MODIFY: Opens the Holiday setup screen.
STATUS: Use the drop down to turn the holiday off/on.
De fault :
Click to return the system to the default settings and remove any Holidays that have
been setup.
Apply:
Click to save the Holidays that have been setup.
Add Ho lid ay:
Click to open the Add Holidays screen.
Add Holiday
Ho lid ay Name:
Click the field to enter the name of the holiday.

Re peat M ode :
Click to select how often the holiday will occur: Once or Always.
Ho lid ayR ange :
Click Date or Week to enter/select the duration of the holiday:
Date
Enter the Start/End dates for the holiday.
Week
Allows you to select the Start/End year, Month, Day, and Recurrence for the holiday.
AddM ore:
If selected the Add Holiday screen will remain when Add is selected to allow you
to enter another holiday. If not selected the Holiday List screen will show when Add
is selected.
Add:
Click to save the holiday details and add it to the Holiday List screen.
Ca ncel:
Click to exit the Add Holiday screen and return to the Holiday List screen without
saving.
TCP/IP
These are your network default settings and do not need to be changed. For more details on your TCP/IP
and Network settings see section 10 Main Menu & Advanced Setup for details.

QR CODE
The Mobile App Account must be setup before using the screen. See the Defender
SmartSignal Manual for details.
Enable :
When selected the system will allow the Mobile App to connect. If not selected
the Mobile App will not be compatible with the system and cannot be used.
Status :
If the Mobile App has not been setup the Status will be Not Connected. Once the
Mobile App is setup the Status change to Connected.
QR Code :
Use the QR Code to scan from your mobile device to open the app store. To setup
the mobile app see the 2K App Manual.
SN Code:
Scan this code from within the Mobile App during setup. This QR Code is also
available on the top corner of the NVR.

REGIS TRATION – CAMERA SET UP
Plug all cameras into a power outlet before starting this step. Your cameras should pair
automatically with the system.
If you do not see the camera in the list after clicking Device Search or if the camera loses connection and
cannot be paired – see Section 11 Camera Resetfor instructions.
De viceS earch:
Click to update the Device list with all available cameras.
Add/D el: Click the Add icon to add the camera to your system.
CH:
This is the Channel number of the camera that corresponds to the Live View
channel windows.
Status :
The status icon is green when the camera is connected and ready to use. When
the status is red the camera is not connected and cannot be viewed or recorded.
Na me:
The default name is the Channel number. To change the name of the camera click
Modify.
IP Address:
This is assigned by your network.

Add/D el: When the camera has been connected use the Remove icon to remove the
camera.
Type:
This indicates the way the camera is connected to the system.
Modif y:
Click Modify to change the camera details. The Password on this screen must be
the same as the NVR password – connectivity between the NVR and the camera
can be affected if the password is different.
NAME: Click the field to enter a new name for the camera (example: front door,
driveway, etc).
CHANNEL: You can change the position assigned to the camera which will
change where the camera will appear on the Live View screen. Click the drop
down to select from options 1 to 4.
SAVE: Click to apply your changes.
Manua l Add:
If the camera does not appear on the list you can add it manually.
READ THESE STEPS BEFORE STARTING
NAME: Click the field to enter a name for the camera (example: front door,
driveway, etc).
PROTOCOL: Select Private.
IP ADDRESS:Click the field to enter the IP Address for your network.
TCP PORT: This identifies the type of Port. Click the field to enter the number.
USER NAME & PASSWORD: This is defaulted to your current login.

DECODER BUFFER: This is assigned to ensure that an encoded video stream
can be correctly buffered. This setting does not need to be changed and should
be left as Default.
CHANNEL: Click the drop down to select the position assigned to the camera
which is where the camera will appear on the Live View screen.
SAVE: Click to apply your changes.
RECORD SCHEDUL E
Record Tab
Ch anne l:
Select the Channel (Camera) using the drop down. This will set the recording
schedule for the Channel selected or All depending on your selection.
Pre -Reco rd:
Click the field to enter the number of seconds the system will go back and record
before a motion event occurs.
Re gula r: When set to Regular the system will record continuously based on the
day/time setup.
If Regular is set it will override Motion and Alarm settings.
Motion:When set the system will record only when motion is detected based on the
day/time setup.
Alarm: When set to Alarm the system will sound when an event is detected based
on the day/time setup. The Alarm will sound from the NVR unit.
MD & Alarm: This checkbox will automatically be filled in when Motion and Alarm
schedules have been setup.
Sele cting:
To select a day/time for the schedule:
1. Click a checkbox to select the type of recording event (Regular, Motion
or Alarm)
2. Move the mouse to the day/time box
