Microprocessor
Your system supports the following microprocessors:
•AnIntel
®Pentium®4 microprocessor with a 533-MHz front side bus speed, internal
processing speed of at least 2.4 GHz, and a 512-KB cache. Microprocessors with an
internal speed of 3.06 GHz or higher support Hyper-Threading.
• An Intel Celeron®microprocessor with a 400-MHz front side bus speed, internal
processing speed of at least 1.8 GHz, and a 128-KB cache.
Installing the Microprocessor Heat Sink
The microprocessor heat sink includes thermal grease on the lower surface of the heat sink.
If you upgrade or replace your microprocessor, you must remove the protective cover on the
underside of the heat sink (see Figure 1-1) to expose the thermal grease prior to installing
the heat sink on the microprocessor. For more information on replacing the microprocessor,
see "Installing System Options" in the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.

IDE Drive Configurations
The IDE subsystem provides three channels (primary, secondary, and tertiary). Each
channel supports up to two IDE devices. Table 1-1 lists guidelines for installing IDE drives
connected to the IDE system board connectors. Figure 1-2 shows the location of these
connectors on the system board.

3 THIRD IDE CD, DVD, and tape drives only. Hard drives are not
supported. CD and DVD drives operate in DMA mode
at ATA-33 transfer speeds. Tape drives operate in PIO
mode 3.
NOTE: Before installing a hard drive on the secondary IDE channel, you must install one or more
hard drives on the primary channel. You cannot install a bootable hard drive on the secondary
channel.
NOTE: The configuration jumper on all IDE drives must be set to Cable Select. Master and slave
jumper settings are not supported.

Expansion Card Support
The system has five PCI expansion slots (see Figure 1-3). Slots 2 through 5 are 64-bit,
33-MHz slots; slot 1 is a 32-bit, 33-MHz slot. Your system supports 3.3-V expansion cards
only.

System Memory
To prevent possible compatibility problems, do not use Micron 128-MB memory modules
in your system.
Memory modules must be installed starting with the first connector (farthest from the
microprocessor) and leaving no open connectors between installed memory modules. See
"Installing System Options" in the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for information
on adding additional memory.
Using the Power Button
To start the system, press the power button and release it as soon as the green power
indicator is lit. If you continue to press the power button, the system shuts down.
To turn off the system, press and release the power button. The system will perform an
orderly shutdown before power is turned off. If you press the power button for more than
4 seconds to shut down the system, power is turned off immediately.
If you select the Disable Power Button option using the System Setup program, the power
button will still function throughout system POST, but will be deactivated just before the
operating system is loaded.
System Lockup While Loading a DOS-Mode CD
Drive Device Driver
If your system includes a CD drive and a slave IDE device such as a tape backup unit, your
system may lock up while loading a DOS-mode device driver for the CD drive (such as
when you boot the system from a bootable diskette or CD). If this problem occurs, update
the DOS device driver for the CD drive by downloading the latest device driver from
www.cdrom-drivers.com.
Console Redirection
Console redirection is not currently supported at the operating system level but is
supported during system POST.

Novell NetWare 6.0
Installing Novell NetWare 6.0 With a Slave Device Installed on the Tertiary
Drive Channel
Certain IDE slave devices connected to the tertiary IDE drive channel (such as IDE tape
backup units) may prevent you from successfully installing Novell NetWare. To prevent
these problems if they occur, perform the following steps:
1Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect the system
from the electrical outlet.
2Remove the cover (see "Removing the Cover" in your Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide).
3Lay the system on its right side.
4Disconnect the interface and power cables from the slave IDE device on the tertiary
drive channel (see "Installing Drives" in your Installation and Troubleshooting Guide).
5Stand the system upright.
6Install the cover (see "Installing the Cover" in your Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide).
7Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet and turn the system on, including any
attached peripherals.
8Perform a standard or express installation of NetWare.
For more information, see the documentation supplied with the operating system.
9Restart the system, and then shut down the system normally.
10 Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.
11 Reconnect the interface and power cables to the slave IDE device.
During a Manual Installation, NetWare Is Unable to Mount the CD Drive
Dell strongly recommends that you use the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD to install
NetWare. If you choose to manually install NetWare from the Novell installation CD, you
must download and install a new IDEATA.HAM driver:
1 If a slave IDE device is installed on the tertiary IDE channel, temporarily disconnect
the drive as described in step 1 through step 7 of "Installing Novell NetWare 6.0 With
a Slave Device Installed on the Tertiary Drive Channel."

2Download the IDEATA.HAM file from the Novell website at
http://developer.novell.com.
3Copy the IDEATA.HAM file to a diskette.
4Boot the system from the NetWare 6.0 installation CD.
5Create a new boot partition:
aChoose a language.
bAccept the license agreement.
cChoose Create a new partition.
dReboot when prompted to do so.
eWait for the new partition to format.
6Copy the update files to the boot partition:
aAfter the partition is formatted and the license agreement screen appears, press
<CTRL>< ESC> to continue.
bSelect System Console.
cType DOWN.
dType C: to select the hard drive.
eType cd\ to move to the root directory.
fType md nwupdate to create a directory for the update files.
gInsert the diskette with the new IDE driver into the system’s diskette drive.
hType copy a:\*.* c:\nwupdate.
The files are copied from the diskette.
iReboot the system.
jAt the Boot Partition screen, select Continue with existing partition.
7Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the NetWare installation.
8If you disconnected a slave IDE device in step 1, shut down the system and reconnect
the slave IDE device.
SCSI Tape Backup Unit Activity May Cause System Lockup
After initiating a secure erase on a SCSI tape backup unit (TBU), the Novell X Window
client may lock up, along with other NetWare applications. To prevent this problem,
download the support pack from Novell’s website at support.novell.com by searching for
longscsi.exe or document number 2961305.

Red Hat Linux 8.0
Support for IDE Devices on the Tertiary IDE Channel
To enable Red Hat Linux support for devices on the tertiary IDE channel, download the
latest errata kernel for Red HatLinux 8.0 from the Red Hat website at www.redhat.com or
the Dell Support website at support.dell.com.
This feature has been added to all Red Hat Linux 8.0 errata kernels created after version
2.4.18-19.7.x.
Optional Internal Winmodem
The optional internal Winmodem is not supported by Red Hat Linux 8.0.
Using an IDE Tape Backup Unit With Red Hat Linux 8.0
To use an IDE tape drive on a system running Red Hat Linux 8.0, install the IDE-SCSI
driver for the tape backup unit:
1Using a text editor, add the following lines to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
rmmod ide-tape
modprobe ide-scsi
hdparm -d0 /dev/hdx(where xis the drive letter assigned to the tape drive)
mt -f /dev/st0 stopoptions no-blklimits
NOTE: Using the /dev/st0 option rewinds the tape after every tape backup,
causing the previous set of data to be overwritten when the next backup occurs.
If you want to archive the data, use /dev/nst0 option and the mt -f
/dev/nst0 [option] command to retain past archive files.
2If your system uses the GRand Unified Boot (GRUB) loader, update the system
configuration as follows:
aLog in as root.
bOpen the /boot/grub/grub.conf file in a text editor.
cAdd /dev/ht0=ide-scsi to each line beginning with kernel, as in the
following example:
kernel /vmlinux-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/ /dev/ht0=ide-
scsi

dSave the file.
eReboot the system to implement the change.
3If your system uses the LInux LOader (LILO), update the system configuration as
follows:
aLog in as root.
bOpen the /etc/lilo.conf file in a text editor.
cAdd the following text to the file:
append="/dev/ht0=ide-scsi"
dSave the file.
eRun lilo to implement the change.
fReboot the system.
Unmounting a Diskette Drive While Using Dell OpenManage™
Server Assistant
If you encounter difficulty unmounting the diskette drive while using Dell OpenManage
Server Assistant, use the omawsd stop command to temporarily stop the Server Assistant
service, and then unmount the drive. To restart the service, use the omawsd start command.
