1UNDERSTANDING SAFETYAND WARNING SIGNS
•Many safety signs and symbols used in this manual are based on international standards, others refer to specific situations or actions.
•Consult appendix 16.1 on page 41 for an overview of signs and symbols used in DHOLLANDIA manuals, and their meaning. Make
sure you understand these signs and symbols prior to starting the installation.
•Please take special notice of the following signs used in the manual. They indicate the likelihood and severity of a potential injury if
a person fails to follow the instructions presented on the safety sign.
DANGER: indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or
serious injury. [white letters on red background]
WARNING: indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury. [black letters on orange background]

•It contains general instructions applicable to the most common types of trucks and trailers. Possibly, specific issues particular to your
case are not adequately covered by this manual. If in doubt, contact your national DHOLLANDIA distributor for further assistance
prior to continuing.
•DHOLLANDIA liftgates are regularly adapted to new vehicle and chassis developments and specialized customer requirements.

3SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR OPERATION
•It is essential that the installers understand and apply the safety instructions and precautions contained in the
OPERATION MANUAL issued with the liftgate.
•Therefore, make sure you consult the OPERATION MANUAL prior to installing or operating the liftgate.
4SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR INSTALLATION
•It is essential that the personnel involved in installing, servicing and repairing hydraulic liftgates knows, understands
and applies the safety instructions and precautions contained in the GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR
INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR manual.
•Make sure you consult these instructions prior to installing the hydraulic liftgate.
•Safety instructions are a matter of progressive insight. The basics are listed in this manual, but contact the national
DHOLLANDIA distributor for a copy of the latest set of instructions [see contact info on page 4], or download the

•Improper use of the liftgate will put the operator and other parties at great risk of serious bodily injury and death.
•To reduce the risk of serious bodily injury to the operator and any bystanders, the use of the liftgate is restricted to skilled operators,
who have been properly trained, and who know and understand the full content of the operation manual.
•To reduce the risk of serious bodily injury or death, the operator must ALWAYS comply with all safety instructions and warning
labels in the operation manual before and while operating the liftgate.

WARNING
•The installers are exposed to various dangers. Improper use of the liftgate, ignorance and neglect during installation, will put them
at great risk of bodily injury and death.
•Once the liftgate is in service, improper installation can cause damage to the liftgate, can reduce its durability and reliability.
Further, it can also put the operator and bystanders at great risk of serious bodily injury and death.
•Therefore installation works MUST carried out by skilled technicians, who have been professionally trained, and have mastered
the contents of all manuals:

•ALWAYS confirm you have reviewed the most up-to-date version of these manuals prior to installation and operation of the
associated DHOLLANDIA liftgate.
•In case of doubt, ALWAYS contact the national DHOLLANDIA distributor for further advice, prior to continuing.
•ALWAYS wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. This includes but may not be limited to: safety glasses with side
guards or a wrap-around face shield; steel toe safety shoes; fire-resistant overalls; protective gloves; adequate ear protection; a
safety helmet when working under the vehicle chassis.
•NEVER wear loose-fitting clothes that may get trapped in the moving parts of the liftgate, or in any machinery and tools used for
the installation. Don’t wear rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches etc…
•ALWAYS use the proper tool for the job. Replace worn or damaged tools before use.
•Pay special attention to the lifting devices (forklifts with slings, overhead cranes, hoists, etc.) used to handle the liftgates, and for
the clamping tools used to clamp the liftgate, its platform, mount plates and various other components to the vehicle chassis and
/ or body. Ensure these tools are appropriate for the job, and in good working order.
•Place the vehicle on a flat even ground and chock the wheels so that it cannot move during the installation. In case of a motor
vehicle, make sure the engine is off and the parking brake is engaged.
•Do not work underneath the liftgate or within reach of the platform and the moving parts, without properly securing and supporting
the platform and the lift frame against an accidental fall. Use an overhead crane and hoists, a forklift with slings or equivalent
means to secure the heavy components.
•NEVER modify DHOLLANDIA liftgates or their mount plates, NEVER deviate from the described installation procedures without
prior written consent by the manufacturer.

NOTICE
•Make sure the main battery power is disconnected while installing the liftgate. Connect the battery power to the liftgate only when
the installation is completed, or as required in the installation instructions.
•DHOLLANDIA liftgates are designed as a bolt-on system, and don’t require any welding. See appendix 16.2 on page 43
for prescribed torque values.
•If for any reason, troubleshooting and / or repair might be needed during the installation process, consult and follow
the guidelines and safety instructions of the MAINTENANCE MANUAL.
•If for any reason, welding would be required, please take note of the following precautions:

5.1 DH-VOU K2K9 K2K9 LIFTGATE TERMINOLOGY
•Refer to the OPERATION MANUAL for an overview of the most important terminology used in DHOLLANDIA manuals.
CAUTION
Welding on galvanized parts can produce hazardous fumes. To avoid intoxication:
•ALWAYS wear a suitable respirator.
•ALWAYS provide good ventilation.
•ALWAYS grind off the galvanization from the areas to weld.
•Most liftgates are equipped with thermoplastic hoses that can be damaged by hot metal chips, welding sparks and
slag. Damage to a hose can lead to sudden loss of hydraulic pressure and an accidental drop of the platform.
•The penetration of welding sparks and slag can also cause a flash fire.
•Both types of incidents can put the welder or installer and any bystanders at great risk of personal injury or death.
To avoid these risks:
→ALWAYS protect and cover thermoplastic hoses with a welding blanket, prior to grinding, drilling and welding.
→ALWAYS inspect the hydraulic hoses at the end of the installation process. Make sure all hoses are
undamaged, replace them if required.
Welding can cause severe damage to the electronic components of the vehicle and liftgate. To prevent damage:
•ALWAYS follow the instructions and precautions of the vehicle manufacturer.
•DO NOT weld if this is not authorized by the vehicle manufacturer.
•ALWAYS disconnect the positive and negative battery terminals.
•ALWAYS connect the ground directly to the component being welded, as close to the weld as possible.
Welding should be done by skilled and qualified installers only.

5.3 GETTING STARTED
•Many vehicle manufacturers issue important instructions on various aspects of the liftgate installation, specific to the brand and type
of chassis. Examples:
→welding instructions or the prohibition to weld
→instructions on chassis drilling and bolt-on connections to the chassis
→recommendations on the use of hydraulic stabilizing legs
→guidelines on fuses, electrical interfaces, and the connection of battery and ground cables, etc.
NOTICE
•ALWAYS verify and ensure compatibility between the liftgate and the vehicle.
•ALWAYS ensure compliance with the fitting and body building instructions issued by the vehicle manufacturer.
•Make sure planned modifications to the vehicle chassis and body will not adversely affect the strength and integrity of the vehicle.
•If the instructions of vehicle manufacturer conflict with the installation instructions issued by DHOLLANDIA (e.g. on fuse ratings,
etc.), contact your national DHOLLANDIA distributor for further advice. See contact info on page 4.
•DHOLLANDIA disclaims any liability for damage arising from modifications to the vehicle in its entirety as a result from installation.
All modifications to the vehicle must be done in accordance to instructions issued by the vehicle and body manufacturer.
•Place vehicle on a flat even ground and chock the wheels so that it cannot move during the installation process. In case of a motor
vehicle, switch off the engine and engage the parking brake before starting.
•Verify if the installation kit is complete and that all parts needed to install the liftgate are present.
•Compare the voltage of the batteries with the voltage of the hydraulic power pack of the liftgate.
•Compare the actual vehicle dimensions with the maximum installation parameters indicated in the INSTALLATION DRAWING or
technical documentation. If the actual dimensions go outside of the maximum installation parameters, DON’T continue and contact
your national DHOLLANDIA distributor for further advice.
•Verify and make sure that the vehicle chassis and body are strong enough to support the forces induced by the liftgate at its maximum
rated capacity. Refer to the instructions of the vehicle manufacturer for calculation and construction guidelines.
•Execute the required stability and weight distribution calculations.
•Make sure that the body is accurately fitted to the vehicle chassis.
•Remove all objects that impede the installation of the liftgate (bumper bar, spare wheel carrier, pallet racks, toolboxes, etc.). If
necessary, consult with the vehicle manufacturer for replacement solutions (e.g. special spare wheel carriers, exhaust pipe
modifications, etc.).
•Finish the liftgate in accordance with the road legislation of the state where the vehicle will be registered.
•When connecting hydraulic couplings, make sure that the connections are clean. Don’t contaminate the hydraulic oil.
•Grease all bearings and pins before putting the liftgate into service. Preferably, put grease in the bearings before mounting the
corresponding articulation pin.
•After installation, work through the checklist of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) test. Make sure the final inspection is signed off by
an inspector who is not part of the installation team.
•Do not pressurize any liftgate functions (LIFT; and CLOSE in case of hydraulic closure) before the installation is fully finished.
•During installation and testing, verify and make sure that the liftgate and its moving parts don’t interfere with any of the vehicle
systems (e.g. the suspension, braking system, hydraulic and electrical circuits, etc.), or cause damage to them.

6INSTALLATION DIMENSIONS AND GUIDELINES
6.1 INSTALLATION DIMENSIONS
•The lifting height is determined by the column width lcwo and the stroke of the lift cylinder fitting inside the cylinder beam. The
tolerances in lifting height vary from project to project.
•Compare the actual floor height vfh measured on the vehicle with the vfh ordered from DHOLLANDIA. If the actual floor height vfh is
higher, DON’T continue and contact your national DHOLLANDIA distributor for further advice.
NOTICE
•When determining the installation dimensions, ALWAYS make sure to respect the maximum installation parameters vfh.
•ALWAYS make sure you comply with applicable bumper bar regulations.
•The MAX vehicle floor height vfh is measured on an UNLOADED vehicle. In case of a higher vfh, the risk exists that the platform
will not reach the ground.
•The LADEN vehicle floor height vfh is measured on a FULLY LOADED vehicle.

6.3 IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
6.3.1 General
6.3.2 Risk assessment by the installer
•The DHOLLANDIA column lifts consist of a wide range of different executions and are offered with a multitude of options to adapt
the liftgate to the client’s specific needs. They are installed on a wide variety of different vehicles, often personalized by the body
builder. Moreover, they are being used for an endless array of vastly different applications often unknown to the manufacturer.
•It is therefore important that the installer conducts a comprehensive risk assessment to make sure the liftgate complies with the
applicable legislation and can be used safely. SECTION 7 of the operation manual gives a good overview of the applicable risks that
must be mitigated. DHOLLANDIA strongly recommends implying the client and his H&S management in the risk assessment process
to obtain best possible understanding of the application and work conditions.
•In K9 executions travelling above the vehicle floor (see 6.4 on page 13), the user and occasional bystander is exposed to additional
risks, and a thorough risk assessment is required.
6.4 ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR LIFTGATES TRAVELING ABOVE VEHICLE FLOOR LEVEL
6.4.1 Guard rails
•Guard rails MUST be fitted in all applications where a significant risk exists that the operator could fall off the platform and suffer
bodily injury. 49 C.F.R. § 571.403 S6.4.9.2 states - privately operated lifts do not require guard rails but must follow S6.4.9.3 →
S6.4.9.9 if equipped with guard rails.
•Some type of guard rails have a significant impact on the geometry and construction of the column lift. Only a limited number of types
of guard rails can be retrofitted.
•Therefore, DHOLLANDIA strongly recommends to include the risk of falling in the early stages of the installer’s risk assessment and
project development. The installer MUST check and abide by local and federal regulations when considering these risks.
WARNING
•Falling from heights can cause serious bodily injury or death.
•Therefore, guard rails MUST be foreseen in all applications where a significant risks exists that the operator
could fall off the platform and in accordance with 49 C.F.R. § 571.403 S6.4.9.2.
WARNING
•ALWAYS make sure that the lift columns are installed in accordance with the installation instructions of DHOLLANDIA.
•Pay special attention to the type of bolts, minimum quantity per side, minimum size and strength class, and the spread of the bolts
over the full surface of the columns. Fasten the bolts and nuts with the required torque, see 16.2 on page 43.
•Incorrect or negligent installation can cause the liftgate to fall off the vehicle chassis once the platform is loaded, and can put the
installers, the operators, and bystanders at great risk of bodily injury or death.
•In case of doubt, don’t continue, but contact your national DHOLLANDIA dealer for further advice.
WARNING
•DHOLLANDIA liftgates are installed on a wide variety of different vehicles and are being used for many different applications often
unknown to the manufacturer.
•To guarantee the safe use of the liftgate in all foreseeable circumstances, ALWAYS conduct a thorough risk analysis. SECTION
7 of the operation manual provides a comprehensive overview of the main risks potentially associated with the liftgate use.

6.4.2 Audible and visible alarm
•In case of K9 executions travelling above the vehicle floor, additional risks arise:
1. Risk of other persons standing under the platform
2. Risk of persons being crushed between the moving platform
and one of the vehicle floors
•An audible and visible alarm SHOULD be fitted in all applications where these risks exist.
•An audible alarm is usually premounted in the power pack of the liftgate. The loudness of the signal depends on the position of the
power pack and the body. The installer MUST make sure the alarm is clearly audible from the work area under and behind the
platform. Relocate the existing alarm or add an additional alarm if required.
•Because of the endless variety in bodies and multi-deck lay-outs, the visible alarm is not included in the scope of delivery of the
liftgate. The installer MUST make sure that a visible alarm is clearly visible from the work area under and behind the platform, and
all areas at the subsequent decks where a risk of crushing or shearing exists.
WARNING
•If a platform is lowered onto a person, this will cause serious bodily injury or death.
•If a person is exposed to crushing or shearing between the moving platform and the vehicle body or floors,
this will cause serious bodily injury or death.
•Therefore, audible and visible alarms MUST be foreseen in all applications where a significant risks exists
that a person is crushed or sheared by the moving platform.

7MOUNTING OF THE LIFT FRAME (PREMOUNTED PLATFORM)
7.1 HANDLING
•Unless ordered otherwise, the column lift is delivered fully
premounted. It can be handled by a hoist or forklift from
the installation guide bracket between the 2 columns.
•When using a forklift, position the forks as wide as
possible, and correctly centered on the middle of the
installation guide bracket. If positioned too narrow, or out
of center, the column liftgate could shift sideways and fall.
•Drive slowly and safely. Take extra care when driving on
uneven terrain. ALWAYS make sure the column lift cannot
shift from its position and fall.
•ALWAYS make sure you keep the bottom of the columns
at a safe distance from the ground. ALWAYS make sure
that the column lift cannot slide forwards off the forks and
fall. Secure the installation guide bracket by means of
adequate clamps, or incline the mast of the forklift.
•Clamp 2 lengths of 3” (76 mm) minimum alignment tube
channel or other sufficiently strong material, to the bed
extension with approx. 5” (120 mm) overhang. These
alignment tubes will help align the cylinder beam with the
bed extension.
•Install at minimum, a 300 lbs (136 kg) counterweight on
the tube channels to prevent them from moving during
installation. Or tack-weld the tube channels temporarily to
the rear sill and floor of the vehicle.
CAUTION
•The lift frame is heavy! When falling on a person it can cause serious personal injury or death.
•Therefore, handle the lift frame with extreme care. Use an adequate gantry crane, hoists or a fork lift to move the lift frame safely,
without a risk of collapse.

•Bring the liftgate in front of the rear frame of the body. Observe the guidelines and precautions for handling in 7.1 on page 15.
•Raise the liftgate to the correct mounting height and align the cylinder beam with the 2 alignment tubes positioned earlier at the
rear sill.
•Ensure the lift columns are square by checking the
diagonals between the columns as shown. The distances
between the tops and bottoms of the columns should be
equal.
•Ensure the cylinder beam is parallel and even with the vehicle
floor using the alignment tubes. Center the cylinder beam to
the vehicle body.
•Ensure both lift columns are perpendicular
to the ground.
•Depending on the type of vehicle suspension
and the expected compression by the
suspension when the vehicle is fully loaded,
you might want to add shims between the
lift columns and the rear frame of the body,
starting at the top side of the lift columns.
•After installation, the platform will deploy at
90* from the lift columns and are NOT
adjustable during use.
•The platform is designed to be level with the
ground, and not the vehicle floor.

7.2 WELDED INSTALLATION
NOTICE
CAUTION
•If you intend to weld, ALWAYS follow the NOTICE and CAUTION with regards to welding in section 4 on page 6.
NOTICE
•Besides the physical protection of hydraulic hoses and composite parts, be aware that the lift runners inside the columns are
equipped with nylon slide pads.
•The heat generated by welding can melt or deform the nylon slide pads. Hot metal chips, welding sparks and slag falling inside
the lift columns can damage the nylon pads, the lift runners, and the chain break protection devices.
•ALWAYS LOWER or LIFT the lift runners and the nylon slide pads as far away as possible from the area to be welded.
•ALWAYS use a welding blanket to prevent hot metal chips, welding sparks and slag from falling inside the columns. Clean out the
columns if required.
•The installer or body builder must make sure that the rear frame of the body is sufficiently strong to sustain the forces exerted by the
column lift and its load at the maximum rated capacity, plus legally mandated safety factors.
•ALWAYS grind off the galvanization or paint from the areas to weld.
•The cylinder beam must be strongly connected to the rear cross member of the vehicle floor. Once in use, this connection will prevent
the cylinder beam from bowing down when heavy loads are transferred from the platform to the vehicle floor or vice versa.
•For column lifts with an aluminum cylinder beam, follow the bolt instructions in 7.3 from page 20 onwards. (unless the rear sill of the
loading floor is aluminum too, and both can be welded together).
•Push the columns and the cylinder beam hard against the rear frame of the body (and shims if necessary).
•Make sure the cylinder beam is level and parallel with the rear sill of the vehicle floor.
•Make sure that the lift frame and cylinder beam are properly centered, square, plumb, level, and true to the vehicle body.
•Use suitable C-clamps to secure the lift columns and cylinder beam in the final working position.

•Make 2 light welds at the top of
the columns to attach the lift
frame to the rear frame of the
body.
•Do NOT weld further at this stage,
to avoid damage to the nylon slide
pads.
•Make the welds or connection
between the cylinder beam and
the rear sill of the loading floor, in
accordance with the instructional
graphic on page 19.
•Temporarily connect the battery and ground
cables of the liftgate to the vehicle batteries or
an auxiliary battery cart (see 10.1 on page 28).
•(1) Operate LOWER to release the platform
from the stow lock.
•(2) Then release the platform lock by sliding
the lock upwards (located towards the inboard
edge of the platform).
•(3) OPEN the platform manually.
•(4) LOWER the platform fully to the ground to
create maximum possible distance between the
slide pads and the area to weld.
•Weld the lift columns to the rear frame of the body in accordance with 7.2 on page 19. Also finalize the 2 top welds applied to attach
the lift frame to the rear frame.
•Clean up the welds, remove any burnt galvanization or paint and apply adequate anti-corrosion protection.
•Verify that all nylon slide pads have remained undamaged. Replace them if required. See contact info on page 4.
•Verify that no metal chips, welding spares and slag have fallen inside the columns or cylinder beam. Clean out if required

NOTICE
•All metal works (drilling, cutting, grinding, welding) to the chassis, subframe, rear cross member, and vehicle body require adequate
anti-corrosion protection. Make sure you comply with the instructions of the vehicle manufacturer.
•ALWAYS protect and cover thermoplastic hoses with a welding blanket. Inspect the hoses after finishing the metal works, and
replace any damaged hoses.
•LIFT the platform fully to the highest position to create maximum possible distance between the slide pads and the area to weld.
