XSt r eam Radio Modem s ar e designed to pr ovide long range w ir eless links bet w een dev ices of a
dat a sy st em . The PKG- E Ethernet RF Mod em connects ser ial m odem s t o Et hernet network s.
The follow ing devices will be used t o descr ibe a dat a system t hat includes t he XStream - PKG- E
Et hernet RF Modem :
XSt r ea m -PKG- E Et h erne t RF Modem ( “ PKG- E” ) : The Ethernet RF Modem is
an Ether net-connect ed serial m odem used for com m unication w it h ot her Digi
ser ial m odem s. The Ethernet RF Modem is not a w ir eless Et her n et
Bridge
int ended for Ethernet connectivit y on bot h t he rem ote and base sides of
a
wireless link.
XSt r eam - PKG- R RS- 2 3 2 / 4 8 5 RF Modem ( “ PKG- R” ) : The RS-232/4 85 RF
Modem is a serial m odem t hat can be ident ified by it s DB- 9 serial port and 6-
switch DI P Switch.
XSt r eam OEM RF M odule (“OEM RF Module” ) : The OEM RF Module is
m ount ed inside all XSt ream - PKG RF Modem s and m ay be int eg r ated into OEM-
designed product s to tr ansm it and receive dat a over -the- air .

The PKG- E Ether net RF Modem can be used as an access point in a net work of Digi RS-
232 / RS-
485 RF Modem s ( or other OEM RF Module Em bedded Devices) . XStream RF Modem s
support point -
to-point , peer-t o- peer, point -t o-m ult ipoint and m u lt idrop net w ork topologies. Below

When test ing a w ireless link, Digi suggests creat ing t he link using t he following
com ponents:
• XSt r eam - PKG- E Ether net RF Modem ( connected t o a local net work)
• XSt ream - PKG- R RS-232/485 RF Modem (w/ loopback adapt er)
• PC ( connect ed t o a local net work )
• Accessor ies ( Loopback adapt er, CAT5 UTP cable, pow er supplies and RPSMA antennas)

1. Connect t he XSt r eam - PKG-E ( Ether net) RF Modem and a PC to act ive Ether net por ts of t he
sam e local net w or k using CAT5 cables ( included w / PKG- EA accessories pack age) .
2. At t ach t he serial loopback adapt er to the DB-9 serial connect or of t he XSt ream - PKG-R (RS-
232) RF Modem . The serial loopback adapter configures t he PKG- R RF Modem t o function as
a r ep eat er by looping ser ial dat a back in t o t he m odem for ret ransm ission.
3. Configure the PKG- R (RS- 232) RF Modem for RS- 232 oper at ion using
the built -in DI P Swit ch. Dip Sw it ch 1 should be ON ( u p) and t he
rem aining sw it ches should be OFF ( dow n) .
4. At t ach RPSMA antennas t o both RF Modem s.

3. RF Modem Operation
An on-board RF m odule enables the XSt r eam - PKG-E RF Modem to send and receive dat a over -
the-air . The RF m odule oper at es in five m odes.

3 .1 . I dle Mode
When not receiving or t r ansm it ting dat a, t he m odule is in I dle Mode. The m odule uses t he sam e
am ount of power in I dle Mode as it does in Receiv e Mode.
The m od em shif ts int o t he ot her m odes of oper ation under the following condit ions:
• Serial dat a is receiv ed in t he DI Buffer ( Tr ansm it Mode)
• Valid RF dat a is r eceived t h r ough the antenna (Receive Mode)
• Com m and Mode Sequence is issued ( Com m and Mode)
• Sleep Mode cond it ion is m et ( Sleep Mode)
Aft er responding to any of t he preceding cond it ions, t he m odem aut om atically t ransit ions back
int o I dle Mode.

When t he fir st byte of ser ial dat a is received from the UART in the DI buffer , t he m odem
attem pt s to shift t o Transm it Mode and init iate an RF connect ion wit h ot her m odem s.

Channel init ializat ion is the
process of sending an RF
init ializer t hat sy nchr onizes
receiving m odem s with the
t r ansm itting m odem . When
st ream ing m ult iple RF packet s,
the RF I nit ializer is only sent in
front of t he fir st p ack et . During
channel init ializat ion, incom ing
serial data accum ulat es in t he
DI buf fer .
Aft er the channel is init ialized,
dat a in t he DI buffer is
grouped int o pack et s ( u p to 64
by tes in each packet ) and is t ransm it ted. The m odem continues t o t r ansm it dat a packet s unt il the
DI buff er is em p t y . Once t ransm ission is finished, t he m odem ret ur ns t o I dle Mode. This
progression is show n above.
As t he transm it ting m odem nears the end of t he t r ansm ission, it inspect s the DI buffer to see if
m or e dat a ex ists to be t r ansm itt ed. This could be t he case if m ore byt es ar rived fr om t he host
aft er t he transm ission began. I f m or e data is pending, the t ransm itting m odem assem bles a
subsequent packet for transm ission.
3 .2 .1 . RF Pa ck e t
The RF pack et is t he sequence of d at a used for com m unicat ing inform at ion bet ween Digi
Modem s. An RF Packet consist s of an RF I nitializer and RF Data.

An RF init ializer is sent each tim e a new connect ion sequence begins. The RF initializer cont ains
channel infor m at ion t hat not ifies receiving m odem s of in form at ion such as the hopping pat t ern
used by the t ransm it ting m odem . The f ir st t r ansm ission always sends an RF initializer.
An RF init ializer can be of various lengths depending on t he am ount of t im e det erm ined t o be
required t o pr epare a receiv in g m odem . For exam ple, a wake- up initializer is a t ype of RF
init ializer used t o w ake r em o t e m odem s from Sleep Mode (Refer to t he FH, LH, HT and SM
Com m ands for m ore inform at ion) . The length of the wake- up initializer should be longer than t he
lengt h of tim e r em ot e m odem s are in cyclic sleep.

The header cont ains net w or k addressing infor m ation t hat is used to filt er incom ing RF dat a. The
receiving m odem checks for m at ch ing a VI D, Hopping Channel and Destinat ion Address. Dat a
that does not pass throug h all t hr ee net w ork filt er layers is discarded.

CRC ( Cyclic Redu ndancy Check )
To ver ify dat a int egrity and provide built -in er ror checking, a 16-bit CRC ( Cyclic Redundancy
Check) is com puted for the t r ansm it ted data and attached t o the end of each RF pack et. On the
receiv ing end, t he receiving m odem com put es the CRC on all incom ing RF dat a. Received dat a
that has an invalid CRC is discarded (Refer t o Receiv e Mode section) .
3 .3 . Re ceive M ode
I f a m odem detect s RF dat a while operat ing in I dle Mode, t he m odem t ransitions int o Receive
Mode t o st ar t receiving RF packet s.

m odem checks t he CRC (cyclic
redundancy check) to ensure that
the dat a was t ransm it ted wit hout
error. I f the CRC dat a bits on the
incom ing packet are invalid, t he
packet is discarded. I f the CRC is
valid, t he packet proceeds t o the
DO Buffer.

3 .4 . Slee p Mode
Sleep Modes enable the XSt ream Modem to operate at m inim al power consum p tion when not in
use. Thr ee Sleep Mode opt ions ar e available:
• Pin Sleep ( Host Con t r olled)
• Serial Port Sleep (Wake on Serial Por t act ivit y)
• Cyclic Sleep ( Wak e on RF act ivity)
For t he m odem to t r ansit ion int o Sleep Mode, the m odem m ust have a non-zero SM ( Sleep Mode)
Param et er and one of t he follow ing m ust occur :
1. The m odem is idle ( n o data transm ission or r ecept ion) for a user-defined period of tim e
(Refer to ST (Tim e before Sleep) Com m and) .
2. SLEEP pin is asserted ( only for Pin Sleep opt ion) .
I n Sleep Mode, t he m odem will not t r ansm it or receive dat a unt il t he m odem fir st t r ansit ions t o
I dle Mode. All Sleep Modes ar e enabled and disabled using SM Com m an d. Transit ions into and
out of Sleep Modes ar e triggered by v arious m echanism s as shown in t he t able below.

Cyclic Sleep is t he Sleep Mode in which the XStream Modem ent er s into a low -power stat e and
awakens periodically to determ ine if any transm issions ar e being sent .
When Cyclic Sleep set ting s are enabled, the XSt ream Modem goes int o Sleep Mode after a user-
defined period of inactivit y ( no t ransm ission or reception on t he RF channel) . The user-defined
p er iod is det er m ined by ST ( Tim e before Sleep) Com m and.
While the m odem is in Cyclic Sleep Mode, DO2 ( ) is de-assert ed ( high) t o indicat e that
dat a
should not be sent to the m odem during t his t im e. Wh en t he m od em awakens to list en for
data,
DO2 is asserted and any dat a received on t he DI Pin is t ransm it ted. The PWR pin is also
de-
asserted ( low) w hen t he m odem is in Cyclic Sleep Mode.
The m odem rem ains in Sleep Mode for a user-defined period of t im e r an ging from 0.5 seconds t o
16 seconds ( SM Param et ers 3 thr ough 8) . Af t er t his int erval of t im e, t he m odem r eturns to I dle
Mode and list ens for a valid data packet for 1 00 m s. I f t he m odem does not det ect valid dat a (on
any fr equency) , t he m odem r et u rns to Sleep Mode. I f v alid dat a is det ected, the m odem
transitions int o Receiv e Mode and receives incom ing RF packet s. The m odem then r et urns t o
Sleep Mode aft er a Per iod of inact ivity that is det er m ined by ST “ Tim e before Sleep” Com m and.
The m odem can also be config ur e d to wake from cyclic sleep w hen SLEEP/ DI 3 is de-asserted
( low) . To configu r e a m odem to operate in this m anner, PW (Pin Wake-up) Com m and m ust be
issued. Once DI 3 is de- assert ed, the m odem is for ced int o I dle Mode and can begin t r ansm it ting
or r eceiving dat a. I t rem ains act ive unt il no data is detect ed for t he per iod of tim e specified by
the ST Com m and, at w hich point it resum es it s low-power cyclic st ate.
Note: The cyclic interval time defined by SM (Sleep Mode) Command must be shorter than the interval
time defined by LH (Wake-up Initializer Timer). (Refer to figures below.)
Cyclic Sca n ning . Each RF tr ansm ission consist s of an RF I nitializer and payload. The wake-up
init ializer contains init ializat ion inform at ion and all receiving m odem s m ust wake during t he
wake- up init ializer portion of dat a t ransm ission in order t o be synchronized with the t ransm it t ing
m odem and receive t he dat a.

st ate in which incoming char act er s are inter pret ed as com m ands and par am eters. Tw o comm and
types are av ailable for pr ogr am m ing t he RF m odem : AT Com m ands and Binary Com m ands.
IMPORTANT: For modified parameter values to persist in the RF modem’s registry, changes must be
saved to non-volatile memory using the WR (Write) Command. Otherwise, parameter values are
restored to previously saved values the next time the RF modem is powered off and then on again.
3 .5 .1 . AT Com m a n d M ode
En t er AT Comm a nd M ode:
1. Send the 3-charact er com m and sequence “ + + + ” and observe guar d t im es before and af t er
the comm and char acters. (Refer to “Default AT Com m and Mode Sequence” below. ) The
“ Ter minal” t ab ( or ot h er serial comm unicat ions soft ware) of t he XCTU Software can be used
to ent er t he sequence.

Sending and receiving par am et er values using binar y com m ands is t he fast est way t o ch ange
oper ating par am et er s of the XStream RF Modem . Binary com m ands are used m ost oft en t o
sam ple signal strength ( RS par am eter) and/ or er ror counts; or change m odem addresses and
channels for polling data system s. Since t he sending and r eceiving of regist er values takes place
thr ough t he sam e ser ial data pat h as “ live” dat a ( r eceived RF pay load), int er ference bet ween t he
two types of dat a can be a con cer n.
Com m on quest ions about using binar y com m ands:
• What are t he im p licat ions of asser ting CMD while liv e dat a is being sent or received?
• Aft er sending ser ial dat a, is t here a m inim um tim e delay before CMD can be asserted?
• I s a delay required af t er CMD is de- asserted before pay load dat a can be sent?
• How does one discern bet ween live dat a and data received in response t o a com m and?
The CMD pin m ust be asserted in order to send binary com m ands to the RF m odem . The CMD pin
can be assert ed t o recognize binar y com m ands any tim e dur ing t he t ransm ission or r eception of
dat a. The st atus of the CMD signal is only check ed at the end of the stop bit as the byte is shift ed
int o the ser ial port . The applicat ion does not allow control over when dat a is received, ex cept by
wait ing for dead t im e between b ur st s of com m u nicat ion.
I f t he comm and is sent in t he m iddle of a st ream of payload dat a t o be t ransm it t ed, the
comm and will essentially be ex ecut ed in the order it is received. I f t he radio is continuously
receiving dat a, the radio will wait for a br eak in the received data before ex ecut ing t he comm and.
The signal w ill fr am e t he response com ing from t he binary com mand request ( Figure 3- 09) .
A m inim um tim e delay of 100 µs (aft er the stop bit of t he com mand byt e has been sent ) m ust be
observed befor e t he CMD pin can be de-asser ted. The com m and executes after all par am et er s
associat ed w ith the com m and have been sent . I f all par am et er s ar e not received w ithin 0.5
seconds, t he m od em ret u r ns to I dle Mode.
Note: When parameters are sent, they are two bytes long with the least significant byte sent first.
Binary commands that return one parameter byte must be written with two parameter bytes.
Refer to p21 for a binary programming example.
Com m ands can be queried for t heir cu r rent value by sending t he com m and logically ORed (bit-
wise) with the v alue 0x 80 ( hexadecim al) with CMD asser t ed. When t he binar y value is sent ( w it h
no par am et ers) , the curr ent value of t he com m and par am et er is sent back t h r ou gh t he DO pin.

IMPORTANT: For the XStream Modem to recognize a binary command, the RT (DI2
Configuration) parameter must be set to one. If binary programming is not

therefore will not recognize the data as binary commands.
