1 Introduction
These instructions are intended for all users who will
have to install, commission, congure and setup the
Sonix Pm10 power management unit. It is assumed
that you have necessary electrical, electronic and
telecommunications experience to undertake the
work. If in doubt, please speak to your local Eaton
representative.
1.1 Eaton quality assurance
Eaton design, manufacture, installs and commission all
our products to the highest standards of quality. This
quality process is embraced and adopted throughout the
group in all areas of our operations.
This is demonstrated by our compliance and strict
adherence to ISO 9001, 14001, ATEX, IECEX policies.
On receipt of the product, ensure that the cartons are
undamaged and that the contents are all correct and
complete.
Should this product reach you in an unsatisfactory
condition please report this to Eaton to enable us to
rectify and investigate the fault in a speedy manner.
1.2 About the product
Sonix Pm10 is a compact 19” 1U design unit, housing
the circuitry for power distribution, switchover and
management for the Sonix PA/GA system components.
Output power is individually protected, monitored and
efciently and securely distributed between eight main
AC outputs, one auxiliary AC output and one 48 V DC
output, providing all PA/GA system power needs in a
single and compact enclosure.
For high criticality systems that require duplicated AC
power inputs, Sonix Pm10 ensures that PA/GA system is
always operational and in the event of site supply failure
or dangerous uctuations, the system will automatically
switch over to the standby power supply. Even under full
load operation, this is achieved without any disruption
to the system operation, continuously advising the unit
status via comprehensive unit display.
Rapid RJ45 power bus connection permits intelligent
monitoring of incoming power supply and distribution
cabling. Each alarm is reported back to the Sonix 2Mx,
SAS and site wide DCS system, to ensure that the
operator is constantly aware of the entire system status.
Input and output power connections to the Pm10 unit
is via shake proof plug and socket, ensuring simple
and speedy connectivity of the unit and ease of
maintenance.

2 Before you begin
2.1 Packaging
In the interest of preserving the environment, Eaton aims
to use recycled packaging wherever practical. Due to the
physical nature of our products, we provide adequate
packaging to protect the goods during transit. Please
ensure that once unpacked, checked and installed that
all packaging is disposed of or recycled in a responsible
manner.
2.2 Safe working practice
Whilst working on or within the Sonix PA/GA system it
is our prime interest that you remain safe throughout.
During this work you may be exposed to potentially
hazardous voltages, currents, confined spaces and
potentially hazardous industrial environments. Prior to
undertaking any work please ensure relevant permits
and regulations are adhered to.

4 Installation and connectivity
4.1 Physical installation
The unit is designed to be fitted inside an industry
standard 19” enclosure, fixed with appropriate size
screws. Depending on the rack and cage nuts used,
they can be either M5 or M6 fitted through four
mounting holes provided on the front panel.
Stacking units is allowed with no additional restrictions,
while still observing the general PA/GA design rules.
The most common configuration is placing Sonix 350-
d units (supported by shelves if rack setup permits)
directly over the Pm10. The unit can self-support on
the front panel mountings but if combined with Sonix
350-d amplifiers in a stack, due to the amplifier weight,
it will require to be installed on shelves or other weight
support structure.

Warning: Ensure that no ventilation points are
obstructed, and that the module is correctly
supported within the cabinet.
4.2 Earth connection
Each unit is equipped with an M5 earth stud at the back
as a protection mechanism for the unit, this is in addition
to the Earth conductors included in the incoming AC
power connections.
Each individual Pm10 unit must be connected directly to
the Protective Earth with at least 4 mm2wire, although
6.0 mm2wire is recommended.

4.3 Power Bus
The Sonix Pm10 is designed as a part of Sonix PA/GA
system and as such, bulk of the unit’s connections are
made with CAT6A cables and colour coordinated with
border around its rear RJ45 connectors.

The Pm10 is connected to a Sonix 2Mx central controller
via Power Bus connection with two purple CAT6A
cables. This connection is required to enable the status
report functionality, as each CAT6A cable provides
bidirectional data transmission between the 2Mx
and Pm10. In the event of either one of those cables
becoming disconnected or otherwise broken data has
a redundant path, ensuring the system will continue to
operate without any loss of functionality (a connection
fault is raised by the system).
ote:N It is recommended that these cables do not exceed 25m in
length. Please consult your local Eaton representative if greater dis-
tances are required.
For single power management unit connection to the Sonix
2Mx module is made with a cable from the Pm10’s top Power
Bus port (see Figure 2) plugged into the top port of the 2Mx’s
Power Bus. With a second cable from the Pm10’s Power Bus
bottom port plugged into the bottom port of the 2Mx’s Amp
Bus, closing the loop.

When connecting more than one Sonix Pm10 unit, the top port
of the 2Mx is connected to the top port of the rst Pm10 unit
while the bottom port of the 2Mx is connected to the bottom
port of the last Pm10 unit in the chain. For all remaining Pm10
units in the chain, the bottom port of one unit is connected to
the top port of the next unit in a chain, as per diagram below:

The Pm10 unit will instantly and reliably switch between
the primary and secondary power inputs, while the
preferred input can be set up in the unit’s congurations
via SAS (see SAS Product Manual for details).
Although it is possible for power supplies to vary
between primary and secondary inputs (i.e. 110 V ac on
primary and 240 V ac on secondary), that conguration
is not recommended due to the need for de-rating of
350-d units present in the system – see 350-d Technical
Manual for more details.
Warning: Minimum required wire diameter for
both Primary and Secondary input is 4 mm2.
Power cable must include an adequately sized
Earth conductor, connected to protective earth.
ote:N As these cables are power feeds, they should be, where pos-
sible, routed within the PA/GA system in a separate way to avoid
contact with dc power or audio cables and reduce the possibility of
interference.

4.5 AC power output
The unit has 9 separately fused outputs, each with a 4 A
fuse. Total unit load should be calculated to not exceed
the design limit of 32 A or total power of 4,000 W.
Warning: Total load is not to exceed 32 A / 4 kW.
4.5.1 Outputs 1 to 8

Each output is individually protected by a user
replaceable, 4 A time delay fuse, accessible from front
panel (see Figure 1).
The outputs are used for connecting critical AC powered

4.6 48 V dc power distribution
48 V dc power is generated internally by two redundant
ac to dc power supplies, each dedicated to one of the
power inputs. The output voltage is regulated to +/-
0.5% and is used for all PA/GA system dc power needs.
Total load should not exceed 95W.
Current limit for individual 48 V dc output is 2 A,
protected by replaceable fuse located on the front panel
(see Figure 1).
When more than one Pm10 unit is being used in the
system, their 48 V dc rail can be shared between the
units. To achieve this, the Pm10 units DC outputs
are daisy-chained: 48 V dc output of the rst unit is
connected to 48 V dc input of the next unit, with no limit
on how many units can be chained. The 48 V dc output
from the last unit is then used as a primary power
source for PA/GA 48 V dc with the others providing a
redundant supply.

The fault output on the Sonix Pm10 is a volt-free contact
output. The state of the fault output is determined by

5 Setup and Conguration
Sonix Pm10 unit does not have any external switches
nor jumper links to set.
Most Sonix modules – the Pm10 included – have been
designed to be congurable via the SAS application.
A detailed description of all the conguration options
is included in SAS Product Manual, but some of the
options are worth mentioning here for clarity and
completeness.
ote:N Correct configuration settings are required to ensure fault-free
and correct operation of the Pm10 unit within the PA/GA system. Not
all settings are covered in this manual, for full details on available set-
tings please refer to the SAS Product Manual.
Initial conguration of the unit should be completed
during the system build as part of FAT/SAT procedure.
The Sonix Administration Software provides facilities to
export/import current conguration which can be used
to duplicate existing congurations onto replacement
units.
Replacement units come pre-congured with a general
setup used for quality and functionality testing and
should be recongured as appropriate on rst use. PA/
GA systems with more than eight amplier units will
have at least two Pm10 units and the correct Unit ID
needs to be set when replacing the faulty unit.
Please refer to SAS Product Manual for details on how
to import, export or change the settings.
5.1 Unit ID
Each Pm10 unit connected to the system must have
a unique identier, called a Unit ID. This can be set to
any number between 1 and 31 (inclusive) and is used to
identify the module to the 2Mx and SAS.
Unlike with other Sonix modules, Unit ID will determine
the time delay for enabling the individual outputs. See
6.2 for details.
5.1.1 Ping set (Set a new Unit ID)
Ping set command is generated by SAS and is used to
give the target Pm10 a new Unit ID.
The Pm10 unit will accept the Ping Set issued by SAS if
the user presses the selection button on the front panel
(see Figure 1) within 10 seconds, as indicated by ashing
user selection LEDs.
ote:N If more than one Pm10 unit is connected, All Pm10 units con-
nected to the 2Mx will flash their user selection LEDs, only button
press on the unit designated to change its Unit ID.
5.1.3 Unit priority
Unit priority for Pm10 is set individually for each unit, and
should be unique, same as for any other Sonix unit.
5.1.4 Input handover
Part of unit’s conguration in SAS describes and sets
the priorities between primary and secondary power
supplies. Available options are presented in the table
below:

*If one of the inputs fails while in Auto Swap mode,
switching back after recovery will happen after short
delay. This is a premeditated behaviour to enable the
settling of supply and thus preventing the unit from
multiple swaps between inputs in short period of time.

6 Unit operation
Sonix Pm10 operates on the Power bus as a part of the
Sonix PA/GA system. The Sonix 2Mx central controller
sends data packets to control the Pm10, to which the
unit replies with its current operational status and faults
presented.
6.1 Power loss protection
When the Sonix Pm10 unit detects an AC power loss
on the active input, it will immediately begin swapping
all the outputs to use a redundant AC input, if available.
When a preferred input becomes available again, the
unit will wait for at least 10 seconds before swapping
back. This delay is intended to allow the input to
stabilise, to avoid switching during surges from other
loads and to ensure the supply will remain available and
will not immediately fail again.
ote:N There will be a finite gap in supply power while the unit is care-
fully switching inputs, this is to ensure that the two supplies are not
connected together.
ote:N Output voltage is dependent on which input is currently selected.
All outputs will have the same source.
6.2 AC Power input priority
Sonix Pm10 can operate in various input priority modes,
depending on its Input Supply Option setting in SAS
(see SAS Product Manual for details):
• Primary AC Input Only
Intended for units with only single AC input power,
the unit will only use Primary power input and will not
switch to Secondary input on power loss.
• Prefer Primary AC Input
The unit will use Primary power input as its main
power source and will switch to Secondary input
when the power is lost in Primary input. When
Primary power is restored, the Pm10 will wait
approximately 10 seconds and then switch back to it.
• Prefer Secondary AC Input
The unit will use Secondary power input as its
main power source and will switch to Primary input
when the power is lost in Secondary input. When
Secondary power is restored, the Pm10 will wait
approximately 10 seconds and then switch back to it.
• Auto-Swap Between AC Inputs
The unit will not prefer any input over the other and
will only switch when the currently active input has a
fault detected and will not automatically switch back
even after the power is restored.
6.3 AC Power input status indication
Pm10 reports the status of its AC power inputs via pairs
of green and red LEDs grouped with each input (see
Figure 1), as per table below:

Fuse monitoring for Pm10’s individual outputs can be
disabled in the conguration via SAS (please refer to
SAS Product Manual for details). The unit will still be
protected, but the status of the output(s) will not be
reported.
6.5 Anti-Surge / soft-start
On initial power-up, the Sonix Pm10 unit will act
as a “soft-start” unit and will enable the outputs in
predened order to reduce the current spike and avoid
nuisance triggering of breakers. The unit’s unique ID is
used to spread the delay over multiple units in larger
systems, units with lower Unit ID will activate outputs
sooner.

pattern described above.

The delay is reset and restarts at 0 for Unit IDs above
15, this is intended for use in larger systems facilitating
powering-up multiple bays concurrently.
6.6 Auxiliary Output
Warning: High voltages present. Power down
Pm10 unit before connecting or disconnecting
this output.
This output has a dual role, it is either available as a
reliable AC power source for other equipment in the PA/
GA rack, for example fans and air conditioning. Or it can
be used to control an external AC contactor to provide a
larger redundant AC power source for systems such as
visual warnings or beacons. When congured to control
an external AC contactor the output is active when the
secondary supply is in use, to changeover the ac source
for beacons etc. to the secondary power supply.
This output is fully congurable via SAS.
Warning: Observe load limit of 4 A on unit and
avoid connecting items with high inductive loads.
These typically have high surge currents.
6.7 DC Rack Output
This is a regulated 48 V dc output, dedicated as a power
source for other Sonix units that are dc powered, such
as Hmi or Vw2.
The Pm10 reports the status of the DC Rack Output via
a pair of green and red LEDs (see Figure 1), as per table
below:

6.8 Front panel button operation
The Sonix Pm10’s front panel button has three functions:
1. Accepting a new Unit ID – when set via SAS (see
5.1.1),
2.Selecting between measurements – each short press
toggles between Voltage and Current measurements
and presents the result on the front panel display (see
Figure 1).
3.Initiate local fault reset – long-press of the button
will reset all fault flags on the unit. If the fault is still
present, it will get reintroduced after few seconds.
6.9 Front panel display
Sonix Pm10 is equipped with front panel display to
show real-time measurements of input supply voltage
and overall current. Green LED indicates the current
operation, as per table below:

Measurements for maintenance and fault-finding purposes need to be

7 Unit customisation
Individual unit customisation is not available for this unit.
8 Commissioning/testing
Before starting commissioning or testing, check that:
• Unit is correctly earthed,
• Connection of each cable to and from the system is
correct and the cables are not damaged,
• DC input and output ports have the correct polarity,
• There are no short circuits between negative and
positive conductors,
• Each input is fed via a suitably rated RCBO,
• Live and Neutral are correctly connected to the
relevant inputs.
9 Maintenance
Warning: High voltages present. Power off the
system and isolate power input supply before
proceeding.
Although the Sonix Pm10 unit does not require any
specific maintenance, the following program represents
the minimum care and it is advisable that it will be
performed monthly:
• Check the unit for visible damage (scratches or
bumps).
• Check unit fixing to the rack – tighten loose screws.
• Check connections and cable integrity - replace
damaged cables and push in loosened plugs.
• Remove dust and dirt from front panel - clean with a
dry cloth.
ote:N Do not use sharp objects. Do not use water, aggressive cleaning
agents or solvent to clean the unit.
