Chapter 1
Introduction
The information in this chapter is intended to help you get started after
your Obsession system is installed and what to do if you need additional
help.1Read below about the conventions used in some of the procedures
in this manual. Read also in this chapter about the HTP/LTP conventions
that determine how control is exercised when commands compete.
Using this manual
Following are some conventions used in this manual.
New Features
The Setup menu’s New Features option provides information about
newly-added features and options. Press [Setup] [1][6] [Enter]. Use the
Level wheel, [Page +], [Page -] or the up/down arrow keys to scroll
through. Print keys are also available to print all or part of the text
Help
Help screens are available for all Obsession keys, including softkeys. To
display help, press [Help], then press any console key.

When commands compete
Obsession II commands sometimes compete with each other for control
of channels when a command tries to gain control of a channel before
another command is finished with it. For example, you might want to raise
a submaster containing one or more channels that are playing back in a
cue. When you try to do that, the submaster is able to assume control of
a channel held in common if the submaster level exceeds the channel’s
level in the cue. In this situation, we say that the submaster has
precedence over the cue on a highest level basis.
There are two rules for command precedence: Highest Takes Precedence
(HTP, also known as “highest level”) and Latest Takes Precedence (LTP,
also known as “last action”). The HTP rule dictates that when two
commands compete for control of a channel, the one ordering the highest
level takes precedence. The LTP rule dictates that when such a
competition occurs, the command that executes last takes precedence.
HTP/LTP precedence tables
In the following sections are several tables showing which precedence
rule applies and the results for various combinations of commands. To
determine the rule and result in a particular situation, consult the tables
according to which of the commands occurred first or last. For example,
when you enter a keypad command after first playing back a cue, look in
the table under heading Keypad command second, page 3.
In most cases, the rule to apply in a precedence situation complies with
some general principles, and these principles are outlined below. Use
these principles as a convenient way to figure out the likely result, but to
be sure, check the tables.
• When a channel is set from the keypad (including use of the Level
Wheel), that action sets the channel level regardless of what was
controlling the channel before the keypad entry occurred.2A keypad
entry is a last action event, which means that it always takes
precedence according to the LTP rule.
• Channels that are set from the keypad are said to be captured. A
captured channel may be made uncaptured by pressing [Clear]. When
a channel is made uncaptured, other commands may control it
according to the HTP/LTP rules. We include the [Clear] command for
some entries in the tables to emphasize that the result can only occur
if the channels are first made uncaptured.
• When a submaster competes with another submaster or a cue, the
result always follows the HTP rule.
• Most competitions follow the same HTP/LTP rule regardless of which
command occurs first, or in other words are bi-directional. The
exceptions relate to competitions between keypad entries and
submasters (standard and effect subs).

occurs second, the keypad takes precedence because it captures the
channels.

Use this table for competitions that involve a submaster and the
submaster occurs first.
Submaster command second
For all interactions shown in the table above where the submaster occurs
second, the command with the highest level always takes precedence in
accordance with the HTP rule.

For all interactions shown in the table above, the HTP/LTP rule remains the
same even when the cue comes second (bi-directional). The result for a
reversed order under the LTP rule, however, may not be the same
because the last action controls. For example, when the cue is played
back after a keypad entry, the result is control by the cue rather than
control by the keypad as shown in row one above.3
