1.1 Warning

which, if not avoided, could result in injury or death.

Improper use of the cot can cause injury. Use the cot only
for the purpose described in this manual.
Modifying the cot can cause injury and damage. Use the
cot only as designed by Ferno.

Squeezing the control handles while UNLOADING the cot
will prevent the legs from locking and will allow the cot
to fold. Grasp only the cot main frame, not the handles,
while unloading the cot.
An unrestrained body can fall o the cot. Use restraints to
secure the body on the cot.
Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain the cot
only as described in this manual.

3  ABOUT THE COT
3.1 Cot Description
The Ferno®Mini Cot (called the cot in this manual) is a
mortuary-service product designed to transport a body.
The cot's One-Man®roll-in style provides easy small-body
retrieval.
The cot is for professional use by a minimum of one trained
operator and is designed for use with the Ferno® Model 579
Floor Fastener (not included).
A Mini Cover is available from Ferno Customer Relations
(page 2). Please ask for item 321-4057.

3.4 Vehicle Considerations
The cot is designed for use with vehicles having an●
entry height of 22 to 25 inches (56 to 64 cm), a smooth
entryareaandaleveloor.
Vehicle features (loose carpet, bumper guards, sill or●
gapbetweenbumperandoor,etc.)caninterferewith
loading and unloading the cot smoothly.
If necessary, modify the vehicle to suit the cot by●
removing loose carpet, adding sill ramps or gap
llers,etc.Never modify the cot and do not modify
operating techniques from those in this manual.
The service life of scuff blocks on the legs may be●
shortened by contact with rough surfaces or sharp
edges when the cot is rolled in and out of the vehicle.
Ferno recommends covering sharp edges or replacing
them with rounded edges to help reduce wear.
If a heavy load or a soft suspension lowers the vehicle●
oorheight,theoperatormustraisetherearofthecotto
allow the undercarriage to unfold during unloading.
Air shocks or other devices may be added to the vehicle●
tomaintainoorheight.

4  USING THE FEATURES
Using the Features
4.1 Telescoping Loading-Wheel
Assembly
The loading-wheel assembly telescopes to the●
extended position (Figure 1) to support the front end
of the cot while it is rolled in and out of a vehicle.
At all other times, keep the loading-wheel assembly in
the retracted position (Figure 2).
The release lever for the loading-wheel assembly is●
located at the operator end of the cot, beneath the
safety-guide label (Figure 3). The lever
is labeled with the number "1", which
corresponds with the panel numbered "1" on
the safety-guide label (Figure 3).
To extend the loading-wheel assembly● , push the
red release lever (Figure 3). For complete loading
instructions, see Loading the Cot and Unloading the
Cot, pages 13-16.
Keep the cot at least two feet away from the vehicle
when extending the loading-wheel assembly. This will
prevent the spring-loaded assembly, which extends
rapidly, from contacting the vehicle and possibly
causing damage.
To retract the loading-wheel assembly:●
when loading the cot○into a vehicle equipped with
the Model 579 Fastener, push the loading-wheel
assembly cross tube into the cot fastener jaws,
then push the cot forward against the fastener until
the loading-wheel assembly locks in the retracted
position.
after unloading the cot○from a vehicle, grasp
the loading-wheel cross tube and push it toward
the operator end of the cot (Figure 4) until the
assembly locks in the retracted position.

Important
The loading-wheel assembly is spring-loaded and
extends rapidly when its release lever is pushed. Make
sure the cot is at least two feet away from the vehicle
before extending the loading-wheel assembly.

4.2 Safety Lock
The safety lock is engaged by default. This prevents●
the cot legs from folding.
The safety lock must be manually disengaged in order
to operate the leg-control handles, which allow the cot
legs to fold as the cot is loaded into a vehicle.)
The safety lock lever is located on the operator's right●
side on the main frame of the cot (Figure 5).
To disengage the safety lock:● Press the safety-lock
lever IN as instructed on the lever label. For proper
use of the safety lock , see
complete instructions in
Transferring the Body
onto the Cot, page 11, and
Loading the Cot, pages 13 and 14. Important
A disengaged safety lock can allow the cot legs to fold
unexpectedly. When unloading the cot from a vehicle,
conrm that the safety lock is engaged before rolling
the cot loading wheels o the vehicle oor.
4.3 Leg-Control Handles
The front and rear legs of the Mini Cot have separate●
control handles. Squeezing the front- or rear-leg control
handle at the correct point in the loading procedure
allows the cot legs to fold independently and in the
proper sequence while the cot is being loaded into a
vehicle.
The leg-control handles are located at the operator end●
of the cot (Figure 6).

WARNING

Do● not squeeze the leg-control handles while
unloading the cot. Squeezing a control handle
during the unloading procedure will prevent the legs
controlled by that handle from locking into position,
which could cause the cot to fold unexpectedly.

4.5 Restraint Brackets and Restraints
Always use restraints to secure the body on the cot.●
A set of two Ferno● ®Model 430-P Restraints is supplied
with the Mini Cot (Figure 8). Each adjustable two-
piecerestraintisvefeetlong.
Use additional and/or longer restraints (not included)●
as needed to secure the body on the cot.
The cot is equipped with four restraint brackets; two●
are mounted on the underside of the platform on each
side of the cot (Figure 8).
Attach the restraints to the brackets according to
instructions in the restraint users' manual supplied
with the restraints.

4.4 Identication and Safety Guide Label

5  USING THE COT
5.1 Before Placing the Cot in Service
Personnel who will work with the cot need to read this●
manual and be trained in the cot's use.
Attach the restraints to the cot (see the restraint users'●
manual and page 10 of this manual).
Conrmthatthecotoperatesproperly.See● Inspecting

Install a cot fastener in the vehicle that will be●
transporting the cot. The cot is designed for use with
the Ferno®Model 579 Fastener (not included).
5.2 General Guidelines for Use
Maintain control of the cot at all times.●
It is the cot operator's responsibility to ensure safe●
handling practices for the body and the cot.
The cot is for professional use by one or more trained●
operators.
Follow standard mortuary-services procedures for●
body handling when using the cot.
Always use restraints to secure the body on the cot.●
Lift only the weight you can safely handle. Use●
additional help when working with heavy loads or
raising the loaded cot from the folded position (see
Using Additional Help, page 12).

5.3 Folding the Empty Cot
Ifyouneedtoretrieveabodyfromtheoororground,you
can fold the empty cot. (You will need a helper when raising
the cot after it is loaded. See Raising the Cot with a Body on
It, page 12). To lower the empty cot:
Place the cot beside the body.1.
Disengage the safety lock.2.
Tip the cot onto its loading wheels and front transport3.
wheels, placing your foot on the cross tube as shown
in Figure 9. Use your foot to control the move and
ensurethatthecotcontactstheoorsoftly.
Squeeze both control handles and lower the control4.
endofthecottotheoor.
Unfasten the restraints and arrange the straps so they5.
will not interfere with the transfer.

5.6 Rolling the Cot
Using the Cot
Grasp the frame at the control end of the cot and push●
the cot forward (Figure 12).
Roll the cot on smooth, unobstructed surfaces when●
possible. If you must roll the cot over rough terrain,
use a helper (see Using Additional Help on this page.)
To cross a low obstacle such as a door sill, move to●
the front of the cot and lift/pull the front wheels across
the obstacle. Return to the control end, grasp the main
frame and lift/push the rear wheels across the obstacle.
Avoid high obstacles such as curbs. If there is no●
alternate route, use a helper to assist in lifting the cot
over the obstacle (see Using Additional Help on this
page.) When using additional help, operate the controls,
direct the helper, and maintain control of the cot. Figure 12 - Rolling the Cot
5.4 Transferring a Body onto the Cot
Unfasten the restraints and arrange the straps so they1.
will not interfere with the transfer.
Place the cot beside the body.2.
Note: If you need to retrieve the body from the ground or
oor,seeFolding the Empty Cot, page 11.
Transfer the body onto the cot using approved3.
mortuary-service procedures.
Fasten and adjust the body restraints.4.
Note: If you have folded the cot to transfer a body, see
Raising the Cot with a Body on It, below.
If you are using a cover, place it over the body.5.
5.5 Raising the Cot with a Body on It
You must use a helper when raising the cot from the folded
position (see Using Additional Help at right).
Do NOT extend the telescoping loading-wheel assembly.
Operator:1. Squat at the control end of the cot and
grasp the main frame. Do not grasp the handles now
or while raising the cot.
Helper:2. Squat at the front end of the cot and grasp the
loading-wheel cross tube (beneath the platform).
Operator and Helper:3. In a coordinated move and
using good lifting practices, raise the cot while rising
to the standing position. You must lift the cot until its
wheels are off the ground, allowing the legs to unfold
and lock into position (Figure 11).
Operator and Helper:4. Lower the cot onto its transport
wheels. Maintain your grasp on the cot until you are
sure the legs are locked.

5.7 Using Additional Help
A helper is required when raising the loaded cot from the
folded position, lifting the cot over an obstacle, or rolling
the cot over rough terrain. The trained operator remains at
the control end of the cot and directs the helper as shown
below. Note that the telescoping loading-wheel assembly
is NOT extended.

5.8 Loading the Cot
Roll the cot to the vehicle, stopping about two feet1.
from the opened rear door.
Note: This distance will prevent the telescoping loading-
wheel assembly from contacting the rear of the vehicle
when you extend the assembly.
Push the loading-wheel release lever to extend the2.
loading-wheel assembly (Figure 13). See Telescoping
Loading-Wheel Assembly, page 8, for release lever
location and operation.
Line the cot up with the cot fastener inside the vehicle3.
and push the cot into the vehicle until the loading
wheelsareontheoorandthefrontlegscontactthe
bumper (Figure 14).
Disengage the safety lock by pushing the lever inward4.
(Figure 15).
With palms facing up, grasp the cot main frame, lift5.
the foot end of the cot, squeeze and hold the right
control lever to unlock the front legs, and push the cot
into the vehicle (Figure 16) until the rear legs contact
the bumper.
Important
Keep the front end of the cot two feet from the
vehicle when releasing the telescoping loading-wheel
assembly. This distance will prevent the spring-loaded
assembly from contacting the rear of the vehicle when
the assembly extends.

Squeeze and hold the6. left leg-control handle while
you push the cot into the vehicle (Figure 17) until the
loading-wheel cross tube is captured in the cot fastener
(Figure 18).
Continue pushing the cot forward until the loading-7.
wheel assembly locks in the retracted position and the
cot is completely inside the vehicle (Figure 19).

5.9 Unloading the Cot
Do NOT hold or squeeze the leg-control handles while
unloading the cot. Doing so will prevent the legs from
locking and the cot may fold.
To unload the cot from the vehicle:
Release the cot from the Ferno1. ®Model 579 fastener by
pulling the fastener release cord (Figure 20).
Grasp the corners of the cot main frame (with palms2.

Using the Cot
WARNING
Squeezing the control handles while UNLOADING
the cot will prevent the legs from locking and will
allow the cot to fold. Grasp only the cot main frame
while unloading the cot.

6  MAINTENANCE
6.1 Maintenance Schedule
The cot requires regular maintenance. Set up and follow a
maintenance schedule. Keep maintenance records. A sample
maintenance record sheet is provided on page 23. The table
at right represents minimum intervals for maintenance.
Whenusinga maintenance product, followthemanufacturer’s
instructions and read the material safety data sheet.
6.4 Disinfecting and Cleaning
the Restraints
Remove the restraints from the cot. Disinfect and clean
them as directed in the restraint users’ manual provided with
them. Additional, free manuals can be obtained from Ferno
Customer Relations (page 2).
6.3 Disinfecting and Cleaning
the Cot Frame and Undercarriage
Disinfect and clean the cot frame and undercarriage by hand
as instructed below. Do not use a water hose, steam, or
power washer.
Disinfecting: Apply a quaternary disinfectant such as
Sanizene® to the cot frame and undercarriage according to
the disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions. (Sanizene®
may be purchased from Ferno Customer Service, page 2.)
Cleaning: Hand clean the cot with a mild detergent or a pH
neutral cleaner. Rinse the cot with a clean cloth and clear
water. Dry the cot with a towel or allow it to air dry.
6.2 Disinfecting and Cleaning
the Cot Platform
Disinfect and clean the platform by hand as instructed below.
Do not use a water hose, steam, or power washer.
Disinfecting: Apply a phenolic disinfectant to the platform.
(Do not use bleach.) Follow the disinfectant manufacturer's
instructions for dilution, application method, and contact
time. Use a clean cloth and clean water to thoroughly
remove the disinfectant immediately after the recommended
contact time.
Cleaning: Hand wash the platform with a pH neutral
cleaner. Follow instructions on the cleaner container. A pH
neutral cleaner can be purchased at hardware and home-
improvement stores.
Note: Do not use harsh cleaning products such as Pine Sol®
or Mr. Clean®, which can damage the platform surface.
Important
The platform can be damaged by disinfectants and
cleaners containing bleach or iodines. Use a phenolic
disinfectant on the platform and thoroughly rinse it o
immediately after the recommended contact time.
Important
The cot frame and undercarriage can be damaged
by disinfectants and cleaners containing bleach,
phenolics, or iodines. Disinfect and clean those parts
of the cot as instructed in Section 6.3 on this page.
Important
Using abrasive cleaning compounds or applicators on
any part of the cot or platform can cause damage. Do
not use abrasive materials to clean the cot.
Important
Water from a hose or pressure washer, or steam, can
damage the platform and can penetrate joints, ush
away lubricant, and cause corrosion.Wash the platform,
frame, and undercarriage by hand.
WARNING
Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain
the cot only as described in this manual.

6.5 Inspecting the Cot
Inspect the cot regularly. Follow the checklist at right and
operate the cot through all its functions as described in this
manual.
If inspection shows damage or excessive wear, remove the
cot from service until repair is made.
6.6 Lubricating the Cot
Disinfect and clean the cot before applying lubricant. Use
lubricant sparingly and wipe away any excess.
Lubricate identical points on both sides of the cot. Do not
lubricate parts not designated for lubrication in the list below
and the diagram on the next page.

Leg Pivot Points:● Apply lubricant to each side of the leg
castings that pivot on the cross tube when the legs are folded
and unfolded.
Leg Hinges:● Apply lubricant between the moving halves of
each hinge.
Safety-Lock Plate:● Apply lubricant where the safety-lock plate
encircles the cross tubes.
Spring Rod:
● Apply lubricant to the rod from the bend at the
control end to the casting at the cross tube.
Loading-Wheel Release-Bar Linkage:● Apply lubricant to the
hardware at the linkage joining the loading-wheel release bar
and the spring rod.
Leg-Control Handles and Linkage:● On each handle, apply
lubricant where the handle attaches to its bracket, and where the
linkage bar attaches to the end of the handle.
Important
Lubricating parts that should not be lubricated allows
dirt and foreign particles to collect on those parts,
resulting in damage. Lubricate only the numbered
reference points shown in the Lubrication Diagram.
