ASM-990 Series: Operating Guidelines
Quick Reference Guide
NOTE: Consult with your hospital’s radiation safety officer or trauma/emergency coordinator for detailed instructions for evaluating,

1. POWER UNIT ON with “ON/OFF” button
a) A screen displaying “Victoreen Advanced Survey Meter” will
appear for ~5 seconds
b) If this does not occur, refer to BACK PAGE (“Power/Batteries”)

2. VERIFY PROBE MODEL # is Pancake
Select “YES” with the arrows and press the “SEL” button
a) If “MODEL #” is not Pancake refer to BACK PAGE (“Probe
Selection”)
b) If “CAL DUE” date has passed, contact radiation safety officer
3. ENSURE RATE MODE is in USE (mR/hr)
Once the probe is selected, the normal operating screen is
displayed
a) Only use the “RATE” mode with “mR/hr” units (Note: may
also read “R/hr” for elevated radiation levels as 1R = 1,000
mR)
b) Verify that the “RATE”mode is in use (denoted by the Rate
Mode Indicator and “mR/hr”)
c) If this is not the case, refer to BACK PAGE (“Mode Selection”)
4. SCAN PATIENT WITH UNIT (as shown)
a) Hold UNIT an inch from patient, with the
BOTTOM of the UNIT facing the patient
b) Survey entire body until a MAXIMUM RATE
reading is identified by visual inspection
c) Record MAXIMUM RATE and Time/Date
If using Patient Tracking Tags, refer to
BACK PAGE for “Logging Data / Barcoding”

*** NOTE: if Maximum RATE is > 0.1 mR/hr, ensure that the elevated RATE
level is not a result of a recent medical procedure
Tips for Reducing Radiation Exposure
•TIME – minimize time near radiation source
•DISTANCE – maintain maximum practical distance from radiation source
•Moving 2x the distance away from radiation source will decrease exposure
rate by a factor of 4
•SHIELDING – place patient behind concrete or lead barriers if possible

Category Description
Keypad •“AUDIO” key is used to enable/disable the audible alarm/speaker. An icon, resembling a small speaker, will
appear in the lower left corner of the LCD
•“LIGHT” key will illuminate the LCD’s backlight for a time period (user menu selected)
•“START/STOP/RST/SAVE” key is used to manually log the current reading and the physical location, for each
measurement, in barcode format
•“SEL” key, when pressed, will activate the menu system
•“ESC” key will return the user to the normal operating screen
Power/Batteries •Operates on two “D” batteries located in the unit’s handle; recommended batteries include nickel metal
hydride (NiMH), rechargeable, or alkaline
Probe Selection •If “Pancake” is not listed as the “Model #”, highlight “NO,” then press “SEL,” to display a list of additional
probes that can be selected
•On the subsequent “Probe Selection” screen, highlight “Pancake” then press “SEL”
Mode Selection •If “RATE” mode is not in use, press “SEL” to change to the “MAIN MENU” screen
•Highlight “MODES” on the “MAIN MENU” then press “SEL”
•Highlight “RATE” on the “MODES SUB-MENU” screen then press “SEL”
•Highlight “mR/hr” on the “RATE UNIT SUB-MENU” screen then press “SEL”
•This series of functions will then return you to the normal operating screen
Logging Data /
Barcoding
•“START/STOP/RST/SAVE” key is used for manually logging data / reading a barcode
•When this key is pressed, the instrument then displays the message “SPACE AVAILABLE XX” for one
second, while the current reading is being logged. The display will also show “SPACE AVAILABLE ###”
between each data point that is logged
•When the memory is full, the instrument will display “LOG BUFFER FULL.”
Data Transfer /
Upload
•Saved data points can be transferred to a PC via the IrDA port using PC based software
•Select “IrDA COMMUNICATION” from the “MAIN MENU;” at the “ENABLE IrDA PORT?” prompt, select
“YES.” Then physically place the unit within six inches of the IrDA data port on the host PC. Initialize the PC
based software.
