Toner and SmartTone Function
The toner helps you identify wire pairs and find
cables in bundles, at patch panels, or behind
walls.
Connect the test leads to two wires in a cable.
Press M, then select SmartTone. Use a tone
probe to find the place where the tone is the
loudest.
If there is voltage on the line, the display shows
SmartTone Volt Detect Lock Out, and toner will
not operate.
The SmartTone function helps you make sure
you correctly identify a wire pair. When you put
a short on the correct pair, the tone changes.
Standard VOPs
Press M, select TDR, then select VOP Setting.

Data Test / Lockout Override
Connect the test set to Tip and Ring. Press P.
If data is present, a warning beep sounds, and
the test set does not go off-hook, and the
display shows Data Detect Lockout. To go off-
hook, press $.
Polarity
+: The polarity of Tip and Ring is reversed.
Redial the Last Number Dialed
Press P. Press L.
Speed Dial a Stored Number
Press P. Press R. Press the key ( 1through 9 )
of the memory location where the number is
stored.
Volume
Press CDto adjust the volume of the
speaker that is on.
Menu
Press M. To scroll, press CD. To select an
item or save a setting, press Magain. To exit,
select Back or press Q.
•Contacts: A phonebook of nine stored numbers
for the speed dialing function. The number in
memory location 9 is the number for the ANAC
function.
TS®54 TDR Test Set Users Card
•Call Log: A list of phone numbers for the last 10
calls that the test set made or received.
•Digit Grab: Shows you the digits dialed by
another device.
•SmartTone: Lets you use an inductive probe to
find telephone lines.
•EditContact: Lets you edit numbers in the
phonebook.
•TDR: Lets you change the Line Verification and
VOP settings for the TDR.
•Settings:
•Bklt Time: Backlight timeout
•Handset Vol, Spkr Vol: Handset and speaker
volume.
•Tone/Pulse: Select tone or pulse mode
•Pause Time Flash Time: Duration for pause and
flash.
•SpkrPhone: Default mode for the speakerphone.
Two-Way: microphone is on.
RecivOnly: microphone is off.
•AutoShutOff: Power-down timeout.
•FactDfaults: Select factory defaults.
Visual ANAC mode (For service provider use only.
Visual ANAC is not available in all regions.)
Connect the test set to a working telephone
line. Press P. Press R$. The display shows
Dial ANAC. Dial the ANAC number.
If you put the ANAC number into location 9 in
the Call Phonebook, the test set goes into visual
ANAC mode and dials the ANAC number when
you press R9.
Caller ID Messages
• The incoming phone number
•Blocked ID: CID is blocked
•Line error: CID data is incomplete
•Unknown ID: CID is not available
TDR
The TDR lets you measure the length of cables
and the distance to the first open or short on
cables as long as 3,000 ft (914 m). Optional: Turn
on the Line Verification (Line Verif) function
and set the velocity of propagation (VOP) to the
correct value for the cable. The Line Verification
function does tests for data and voltage on the
line when you press t.
Press Q. Connect the test leads to the cable.
Press t.
TDR Results
•Short at 1267 ft: There is a short across the two
conductors 1267 feet from the test set.
•Open at 2433 ft: The cable is 2433 feet long, or
there is an open in one or both of the
conductors 2433 feet from the test set.
•TDR Voltage Detect Lockout: There is data or
voltage on the line. The TDR does not operate
on an active line.
