Chapter 1 Product Overview
1.1 Introduction
1.1.1 About VoIP
The traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) uses circuit switching to
transmit voice signals. The conversation between the calling and called parties is
carried on a real-time circuit connection. Based on IP packet switching network, the
voice over IP (VoIP) technology is used to compress and packetize analog voice
signals, and the signals will be transmitted in the form of connectionless IP packets.
By employing VoIP technology, you can use IP phone on the IP-based data
communication networks, such as enterprise local area network (LAN), wide area
network (WAN) and Internet. IP phone can reduce the phone charge and guarantees
the voice quality when you make long-distance calls.
1.1.2 About the Product
Huawei-3Com Technology Co,, Ltd. developed H3C VG 10-10/10-11 Voice Gateway
(hereinafter referred to as VG 10-10/10-11) for small and medium-sized enterprises,
and SOHO (small office, home office) users. VG 10-10/10-11 is a new-generation
access device, providing a solution for integrating voice, fax and data within a single
network. It is mainly used to convert between analog voice signals/fax signals and IP
data.
The VG 10-10/10-11 delivers an exceptional price/performance ratio for users,
providing rich IP telephone features, such as voice over IP (VoIP), fax over IP (FoIP),
call control, and maintenance and management. Furthermore, it provides multiple
coding/decoding modes and supports DHCP client function.
VG 10-10 provides one PHONE port and two Ethernet ports (WAN port and LAN port).
The PHONE port is used to connect ordinary analog phone sets and fax machines. The
Ethernet ports operate in non-forwardingmode and provide functions similar to hubs by
using switching chips. WAN port is used to connect the LAN and Internet, and LAN port
is used to connect PC.
VG 10-11 provides one LINE port, one PHONE port and two Ethernet ports (WAN port
and LAN port). The LINE port is used to connect the local telephone line (or the line of a
stored program control telephone) and the PHONE port is used to connect ordinary
analog phone sets and fax machines. The Ethernet ports function in non-forwarding
mode and provide functions similar to hubs using switching chips. WAN port is used to
connect the LAN and Internet, and LAN port is used to connect PC.

1.2.1 Two IP Configuration Modes
VG 10-10/10-11 supports DHCP client mode and Static IP mode.
1.2.2 Various Services
VG 10-10/10-11 supports voice/data/fax services and provides Internet access function.
It can meet the requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises and SOHO users
by integrating multiple services on one device.
1.2.3 High Voice Quality
VG 10-10/10-11 supports voice coding/decoding algorithms such as G.729r8, G.729A,
G.723.1(r53), G.723.1(r63), G.711A-Law and G.711U-Law. The abundant
coding/decoding schemes make clear conversation available at different bandwidth
levels and provide voice quality as good as that of PSTN phones.
1.2.4 Interoperability
VG 10-10/10-11 supports standard H.323 protocol. It is interoperable with other
relevant products and is suitable for enterprise-level VoIP solutions.
1.2.5 Stable System
High-quality components and seriously tested system software ensure the stable
operation of the VG 10-10/10-11, thus providing better service for users.

The Web-based management interface simplifies configuration and management.

2.1 Installation Precautions
zReserve more than 10 cm (4 in.) of clearance around the VG 10-10/10-11 for heat
dissipation.
zFix the device and power adapter well if mount them on the wall.
zMake sure that the cables are fixed and correctly connected. Any unstable cabling
may cause problems to the VG system. Do not unplug the telephone cable off the
LINE port during conversation via PSTN network.
zProvide stable power supply. When updating the VG software or modifying the
parameters, unexpected power-off will cause the loss of configuration in VG and
restore to the default factory settings.
2.2 Device Connection

Take the following steps for connection.
2.2.1 Connecting to LAN or Internet
Connect a switch or other Ethernet access device to the WAN port on VG 10-10/10-11
using cables.
2.2.2 Connecting to PC
Connect the Ethernet port on PC to the LAN port on VG 10-10/10-11 using cables.
2.2.3 Connecting to the Phone Set
Connect the phone set to the PHONE port on VG 10-10/10-11 using phone cable.
Connect the PSTN trunk to the LINE port on VG 10-11.
2.3 Power on the device
Power on the device according to the following order after connection.
1) Connect the VG 10-10/10-11 and the power socket via special power adapter.
2) Power on the device.
After powering on the VG 10-10, the PWR LED keeps on steadily and the SYS LED
keeps blinking; after powering on the VG 10-11, the PWR LED keeps on steadily.

VG 10-10/10-11 provides Web-based configuration page as the VG management
interface. You can configure the VG as needed.

3.1 Configuration Preparation
Before logging on the VG Web configuration page, you have to meet the following
requirements after completing the hardware installation.
3.1.1 System Requirements
zThe Ethernet card is installed on PC.
zThe operating system is Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
zThe Web browser (Microsoft IE 6.0 or later) is installed on PC.
zTCP/IP protocol is enabled
3.1.2 Network Configuration Requirements
The initial IP address of Ethernet port on VG 10-10/10-11 is 192.168.1.1 and the subnet
mask is 255.255.255.0. Before accessing the configuration page, configure the IP
address of PC to be in the same subnet with VG 10-10/10-11.
3.1.3 Checking Proxy Server
Do not use the proxy server to access the Internet. Take the following steps to disable
the proxy server.
1) Select [Tools -> Internet Options] in the Internet Explorer to enter the [Internet
Options] window
2) Select “Connections” tab and then click <LAN Settings>.
3) Remove the tick from the “Use a proxy server” check box and then click <OK>.
3.1.4 Setting Temporary Internet Files
Open the Internet Explorer and set the “Check for newer versions of stored pages“ to
“Every visit to the page“ in the [Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Temporary
Internet files -> Settings] to ensure timely update of the Web page.

3.2 Login
Run the Internet Explorer. Type the IP address of the device “http:// xxx. xxx. xxx. xxx"
in the address bar and press <Enter>, then the Web login page will appear. VG
10-10/10-11 provides Chinese and English Web pages; you can select a language in
the login page, as shown in the following figure.

Select a user name and enter the password, and then click <Login> to enter the
configuration page.
For first login to the VG, you can type the factory set IP address “http:// 192.168.1.1” in
the address bar, or type the management IP address “http:// 192.168.192.1” via LAN
port. (Refer to 4.4.2 Configuring Management IP Address for details about
management IP address.)
The factory setting initial address information is listed in the following table.

The default factory setting user information of VG 10-10/10-11 is listed in Table 3-2. It is
recommended that you change the password for the first login, refer to 4.2.3 Modifying
User Password for related details.
The Webpage will time out if no operation is performed within five minutes after you log
in. For security, the system will then return to the login page and require you to enter the
password again. The Web page language remains the previous one set before timeout.
If you close the Web page, the language defaults to English when you login next time.
Caution:
zBefore login, make sure that the IP addresses of the PC and the voice gateway are
configured in the same network segment or the route between the two addresses is
reachable.
zIf you use the management IP address to log into the voice gateway, make sure that
the PC is connected to the LAN port of the voice gateway.
zThere can be another device that has the same management IP address with the
VG 10-10/10-11; however, there cannot be any device having an interface IP
address conflicting with that of the voice gateway, which may affect the normal
operation of the voice gateway.
3.3 Overview on Configuration Web Page
The following is the Web page of VG 10-10/10-11. By clicking any item in the navigation
bar (on the left side of the page), you can view the corresponding configuration
information on the right side of the page, where you can view or modify the
configuration information of the voice
