The sensor contains an RFID module to receive and transmit information and data. The RFID
module operates with a frequency of 13.56 MHz.

public health, public safety, food or beverage manufacture or processing, it is the responsibility of the
user of this instrument to know and abide by any applicable regulation and to have sufficient and
appropriate mechanisms in place for compliance with applicable regulations in the event of malfunction
of the instrument.

The TU5300 sc and the TU5400 sc sensors are used with an sc controller to measure low range
turbidity primarily in water purification water applications and in seawater with high salt
concentrations. Refer to Figure 1.
These sensors measure scattered light at an angle of 90° in a 360° radius around the axis of the
incident light beam.
The optional accessories for the sensors include: an integrated automatic system check, which
monitors for vial condensation and fouling, an automatic mechanical cleaning unit, a bubble trap or a
flow sensor.

Installation guidelines

Make sure that a floor drain is available near the instrument. Examine the instrument daily for leaks.
This instrument is rated for an altitude of 3100 m (10,710 ft) maximum. Use of this instrument at an
altitude higher than 3100 m can slightly increase the potential for the insulation to breakdown, which
can result in an electric shock hazard. The manufacturer recommends that users with concerns
contact technical support.
• Install the sensor upright and level on a flat, vertical surface.
• Mounting hardware is supplied by the user.
•Refer to the documentation supplied with the accessories for installation of the optional units.
• Refer to Installation overview on page 10 for the minimum clearances.

As an alternative, attach the sensor directly to a wall. Refer to the illustrated steps that follow. Make
sure to remove the thin, plastic film from the mounting holes on the back of the instrument.
Install the maintenance rack
Refer to the illustrated steps that follow to install the maintenance rack. The process head is set on
the maintenance rack to clean or change the vial or for calibration with the sealed StablCal vials and
the calibration lid.

Install the desiccant cartridge
Refer to the documentation supplied with the desiccant cartridge for initial installation. Make sure that
the indicator on the desiccant cartridge is blue. Refer to Figure 4.

Connect to an sc controller
Connect the sensor to the quick-connect fitting of an sc controller. Refer to Figure 5. The sc controller
can be on or off. Keep the connector cap for later use.

Set the controller power to on after the connection to the sensor is made. When the sensor is set to
on, the status light is activated. Refer to Status indicator light on page 15.
Status indicator light
When the controller power is set to on, the status indicator light on the sensor shows. Refer to
Figure 1 on page 9. Refer to Table 2 for the status indicator light definitions. The controller display
will show and identify the status of each light color.

WARNING
Explosion hazard. Make sure that the drain tube is free of all obstructions. If the drain tube has a
blockage or is pinched or bent, high pressure can build up in the instrument.

Personal injury hazard. The sample line contains water under high water pressure that can burn skin if
hot. Qualified personnel must remove the water pressure and wear personal protective equipment
during this procedure.

Before the sensor is plumbed, make sure that the desiccant cartridge is installed, all the electrical connections are
made and that the sensor power is set to on.
Make sure that the tubing is of sufficient length that the process head can be moved to the
maintenance rack. Refer to Specifications on page 3 for the tubing requirements. Refer to Figure 6 to
plumb the sensor.

Startup
Set up the sensor
Use the setup menu to start an automatic vial cleaning (optional) and to select calibration,
verification, configuration and maintenance options.
1. Push menu.
2. Select SENSOR SETUP.
3. Select an option.
Option Description
WIPE (optional) Starts an automatic cleaning process to clean the vial if an automatic mechanical cleaning
unit is installed.
CALIBRATION Shows calibration options: to start a calibration process, to set the calibration options (cal
curve, verification after calibration, cal reminder, output mode and more), to set the offset
and factor and to see the calibration log. Refer to the expanded manual on the
manufacturer's website. Refer to the calibration lid documentation for more calibration
procedure options.
VERIFICATION Shows verification options. START—Starts the verification process. SETUP—Sets the
verification options. VERIF LOG— Shows the verification times. Refer to the calibration lid
documentation for more verification procedure options.
CONFIGURE Shows the sensor configuration options: to change the location name, set the signal
average, measurement units, resolution, bubble reject, logger interval, button function and
more. Refer to the expanded manual on the manufacturer's website.
DIAG/TEST Gives diagnostics and maintenance options. Refer to Maintenance on page 17.
Calibration
WARNING
Chemical exposure hazard. Obey laboratory safety procedures and wear all of the personal protective
equipment appropriate to the chemicals that are handled. Refer to the current safety data sheets
(MSDS/SDS) for safety protocols.
When the instrument is used for EPA regulatory reporting, calibrations must be completed according
to EPA guidance documents and methodologies. Contact local authorities for compliance
regulations.
The sensor is factory calibrated and the laser light source is stable over time. The manufacturer
recommends that a calibration verification is done periodically to make sure that the system operates
as intended. The manufacturer recommends calibration at quarterly intervals or as local regulations
require and after any repair or comprehensive maintenance work.
Refer to the expanded manual on the manufacturer's website for more information about the
calibration settings. Calibrate the sensor with a StablCal standard(s), a formazin standards(s) or a
custom standard(s). The verification options are StablCal and glass rod.

MAINTENANCE Starts an instructed menu process to replace or clean the vial, replace the wiper or the
desiccant cartridge. WIPE—Starts a wiper cleaning. OUTPUT MODE—Selects the output
behaviour during maintenance (default: hold). FACTORY SERVICE—For service use only.

Use the COUNTERS menu options to view or reset the service history.

completed. Refer to the calibration lid documentation for more information.
LASER TIME Shows the length of time the laser light source was set to on. Resets the counter
when the laser is replaced.
DESICCANT Shows the operational time of the process head desiccant cartridge. Resets the
counter when the desiccant is replaced. Refer to Replace the desiccant cartridge
on page 22.
FACTORY SERVICE Shows the last completed factory service.
Clean spills
CAUTION
Chemical exposure hazard. Dispose of chemicals and wastes in accordance with local, regional and
national regulations.

Clean the instrument
N O T I C E
Do not use solvents to clean the instrument.
The instrument is maintenance free. Regular cleaning is not necessary for normal operation. If the
exterior of the instrument becomes dirty, wipe the instrument surfaces with a clean, moist cloth.

Replace the vial

Do not touch the glass of the vial. Contamination on the glass can cause measurement errors. To protect the
glass from contamination, use the vial removal tool to install the new vial.
Note: Make sure that no water or particles fall into the vial compartment.
Use the menu-guided process in MAINTENANCE>VIAL REPLACEMENT to replace the vial. Do
steps 1 to 4 in reverse order to assemble. Refer to the illustrated steps that follow to replace or to
clean the vial. To protect the glass from contamination, use the vial removal tool to install the new
vial.
