3 Disposal
When you are disposing of the device, the respective statutory rules must be observed.
Pursuant to guideline 2002/96/EC (WEEE), all devices supplied after August 13, 2005
may not be disposed as part of domestic waste. The device belongs to group 8 (medical
devices) and is categorized in the business-to-business field.
The icon of the crossed-out trash can shows that the device may not be
disposed as part of domestic waste.

4 Operational modes
Mode for normal robotic operation
The key-operated switch has to be in position LOCK 2 (right key position) and the
key must be pulled off.
Additionaly in the complete arrangement the centrifuge has to be protected
against unauthorized penetration and manipulation.
Mode for adjusting and initializing operation respectively handling of the centrifuge without serial interface
It is only allowed for skilled maintenance staff to work in the adjusting and
initializing operation.
After the adjusting and initializing operation the key-operated switch has to be in
position LOCK 2 (right key position) and the key must be pulled off.
To protect the key against unauthorized access keep it in a save place.
Notice: The
STOP
key on the control panel is always active.
Manually opening and closing the hatch without serial interface
Only possible in key-operated switch position LOCK 1 (left key position).

5 Description of the centrifuge
These microprocessor controlled centrifuges mainly consist of the following electrical
components:
• Control panel, microprocessor controlled
• Supply board, microprocessor controlled
• Frequency converter (motor control), microprocessor controlled
• Motor with speed sensor (speedometer) and imbalance switch
• Braking chopper with brake resistor
• Lid lock
5.1 Control panel (A5)
The control panel is the brain or the master of the centrifuge. This MASTER controls its
SLAVES via a serial data bus system. These SLAVES are the following components:
− supply board
− frequency converter
The control panel carries out the following tasks:
• Managing operator entries and controlling the LCD display
• Saving 89 run programs
• Controlling the components:
− supply board via the serial interface
− frequency converter via the release line and the serial interface
− positioning board via special conductors in the flat ribbon cable
• Evaluating the speed sensor (speedometer)
• Evaluating the imbalance switch
• Evaluating the frequency converter error message line
• Evaluating the message line lid lock open/closed
• Triggering the relay for the voltage supply of the lid lock when the rotor has standstill
• Temperature measurement and evaluation of the temperature sensor at the top of
the centrifuge chamber
• Routine for input, saving and transmitting temperature offset values (offset values
are transmitted to the supply board each time the mains supply is switched on)
• Type of serial interface:
− RS 485 interface via two wires (26-pole flat ribbon cable, pole 19 and 20)
• The voltage supply for the control panel is provided by the supply board via the flat
ribbon cable: + 15...20 Volt: pole 1, 2, 25, 26 and GND: pole 15, 16, 17, 18

5.2 Supply board (A1)
The supply board carries out the following tasks:
• Current supply 18 V DC and 5 V DC for the supply board
• Current supply 18 V DC for the control panel
• Temperature measurement and evaluation of the temperature sensor at the bottom
of the centrifuge chamber
• Evaluating the overtemperature switch in the centrifuge chamber
• Temperature measurement and evaluation of the temperature sensor on the
condenser
• Evaluating the message line lid lock open/closed
• Evaluating the message line hatch open/closed
• Evaluating the overtemperature switch on the brake resistor (when the overtempera-
ture switch opens, the frequency converter will be switched off)
• Voltage supply for the speed sensor (speedometer)
• Slot for speed sensor cable and transmission of the speed pulses to the control
panel
• Evaluating the speedometer pulses with regard to standstill
• Triggering the relay of the lid lock when the rotor has standstill
• Slot for imbalance switch and direct transmission of the imbalance signal to the
control panel
• Processing the individual sensor temperatures:
− calculating the ACTUAL temperature
− controlling the cooling units
− controlling the heating
− controlling the condenser ventilator
• SLAVE behaviour (the requests and commands of the control panel are transmitted
via the serial interface):
− RS 485 interface with two wires
• The 5 Volt interface with three wires is transferred to a RS 485 interface with two
wires.
Interface for the frequency converter: RS 485 interface via two wires
• Transmitting the main enable signal control panel ⇒frequency converter
• Transmitting the error line frequency converter ⇒control panel
• Evaluating the switching statuses of the key-operated switch (e.g. LOCK 1) and
transmitting the information to the control panel via the serial interface
• Evaluating the jumper assignment and transmitting the information to the control
panel via the serial interface
− Machine version
− Cooling version
− Service mode
If the processor of the supply board detects an error, it switches off automatically. The
control panel continuously checks the status of the supply board via the serial interface.
The control panel defines the SET temperature and OFFSET temperatures via the
serial interface. The control panel inquires the ACTUAL temperature.

5.3 Frequency converter (A2)
The frequency converter carries out the following tasks:
• Generating the motor current supply
(three-phase current with variable frequency and voltage).
Functional description: The supply voltage is rectified, smoothened and
chopped into a pulse width pattern in three bridge
elements with a microprocessor.
• Monitoring the motor current.
• Evaluating the overtemperature switch in the motor.
• SLAVE behaviour (the requests and commands of the control panel are transmitted
via the serial interface):
RS 485 Volt interface with two wires
(5-pole flat ribbon cable, pole 2 and 3).
• Evaluating the main enable signal for the frequency converter
(5-pole flat ribbon cable, pole 1).
• Evaluating possible errors and handling the error line
(5-pole flat ribbon cable, pole 4).
• The following are defined by the control panel via the serial interface:
− Speed
− Starting and brake levels
− Control commands START, BRAKE, STOP
• LED status displays:
In the standby status the red LED illuminates
In the run status the green LED illuminates
In the error status the red LED flashes
If the frequency converter processor detects an error, it switches off automatically and
sets the error line. Then the control panel inquires the type of error via the serial
interface.
5.4 Positioning board (A14)
The positioning board performs the following individual functions:
• Control of the drive motor for opening and closing the hatch (control signals come
from the control panel, voltage for relay comes from the supply board).
• Power supply for the magnetic brake (controlled by the control panel; voltage for
relay comes from the supply board).
• Transmission of the hatch end switch signals to the control panel.
• Transmission of the lid signal (hatch closed) to the supply board.

5.5 Sliding hatch board (A15)
Plugging station and transmission for:
• drive motor for hatch
• hatch end switches (S6, S7)
• micro switch "lid contact" (S8)
5.6 Special features
• The solenoid of the lid lock is switched via a relay on the supply board.
This relay can pick up only if the control panel and the supply board have detected a
standstill.
• Multiprocessor concept:
If a processor stops working, the other two processors still continue monitoring their
area.
If there is a control panel failure, the frequency converter automatically switches off
the drive if no inquiries are made via the interface for longer than 60 seconds.
• Interface concept:
The information transmission is monitored with an additional check sum.
• Hardware concept:
All safety related switches are break contacts. This also ensures that loose contacts
and cable rupture can be detected.
5.7 Braking chopper (A3) / Brake resistor (R1)
• The braking chopper regulates the flow of the electric power produced during braking
(exceeding a voltage of approximately 390 V) to the brake resistor.
• The brake resistor is protected against fire by an overtemperature switch. If the
braking chopper suffers a short-circuit, the brake resistor will overheat, causing the
overtemperature switch release and, via two relays on the supply board, isolates the
frequency converter from the mains supply.
5.8 Motor / tacho system
• The motor is a three-phase asynchronous motor with four pairs of poles.
• A speed sensor (speedometer) which is screwed onto the motor receives
− the rotor code information and
− the speed information (6 pulses per revolution)
from the magnets of the tacho ring attached to the rotor.
• The control panel monitors and regulates the ACTUAL speed.
− Double safety: In addition, the frequency converter has been programmed in
such a way that it is not possible to set a speed value which is
higher than the permissible rotor speed.
• The control panel and the supply board monitor the rotor standstill.
− Double safety: The lid can be opened only when the control panel and the
supply board have detected a standstill.

5.9 Magnetic brake (Y2)
• The magnetic brake on the motor fixes the rotor during it will be loaded and
unloaded.
• The brake will be activated when the desired rotor position is reached and remains
activated until moving to the next rotor position or closing the hatch.
5.10 Lid lock (Y1)
• Opening of the lid lock is prevented by a latch. The lid lock can only be opened when
the relay on the supply board has picked up.
This occurs when the rotor is at standstill and mains power is applied. A solenoid
picks up and releases the latch. The jumper for the lid lock must be plugged to the
position "Mag" on the supply board.
• The lid can only be locked if both lid brackets are in the lid lock.
• You can start the centrifuge only if the lid is closed. A micro switch on the lid lock
detects the lid lock position. A second micro switch (on the hatch) detects the
position of the hatch.
5.11 Micro switch "lid contact" (S8)
• A micro switch on the hatch detects if the hatch is correctly closed or not.
• The switch is in series to the lid lock switch.
• The centrifuge can be started, only if the hatch is closed correctly.
• If the hatch is closed the switch will be actuated (closed).
5.12 Hatch end switches (S6, S7)
• The two micro switches on the hatch detect if the hatch is completely closed or
opened.
• The switch S6 will be actuated (closed) if the hatch is completely opened.
• The switch S7 will be actuated (closed) if the hatch is completely closed.
5.13 Imbalance switch (S1)
• A switch (break contact) detects imbalance.
• Imbalance is detected only in running mode (starting, centrifuging and braking).
• If imbalance is detected, the drive is brought to a standstill.
5.14 Key-operated switch (A7)
• With the key-operated switch the operation mode and different program locks can be
select, see chapters "Key-operated switch" and "Handling of the centrifuge without a
serial interface".
The key position will be displayed.
• If the key is removed, the selected operation mode and the program lock are locked
and can be changed no more.

5.15 Machine concept
• The machine version is set with jumper assignment A.4 and A.5 on the coding strip
of the supply board, see chapter "Setting the machine and cooling version".
• This machine version must comply with the control panel (correct initialization).
• This machine version must comply with the installed and initialized frequency
converter.
• The machine version has a binary code:

5.16 Cooling system
• The cooling version is set with jumper assignment A.0 on the coding strip of the
supply board, see chapter "Setting the machine and cooling version".
• This cooling version must comply with the control panel:

− If the lid is opened, the cooling system or a possibly heating system switch off.
− If the overtemperature switch is opened, a possibly heating system switches off.

off.
− The processor on the supply board controls the cooling system.
− The control panel sets the nominal temperature and the temperature of the
temperature sensor T1 on the supply board via the serial interface.
− The control panel inquires the ACTUAL temperature via the serial interface.

T1 Temperature sensor at the top of the centrifuge chamber
This temperature is processed in the control panel.
T2 Temperature sensor at the bottom of the centrifuge chamber
This temperature is processed on the supply board.
The T2 temperature sensor housing also includes an overtemperature switch.
It switches off the drive in cooling centrifuges when the temperature is > 60°C and
in heating/cooling centrifuges if it is > 80°C.

Temperature determination:
During centrifugation the temperature is determined on the basis of the
relationship between T1 and T2. This occurs in different ways depending on the
speed range (see chapter "Diagram of the cooling versions, sensor evaluation").
During standstill, the temperature is determined only with the T2 temperature
sensor.
The switching temperatures depend on the cooling version, see chapter "Diagram
of the cooling versions"
T3 Temperature sensor on the condenser
This temperature is used for controlling the ventilator speed.

5.17 Ventilator control
• The ventilator control is a temperature-dependent phase control.
• If the cooling system switches on, the ventilators run with a fixed start speed.
• When the condenser temperature rises, the ventilators run faster.
• At 32 °C, or at the latest after 60 seconds, the ventilator speed regulation is
activated and the ventilator speed is regulated to achieve a constant temperature of
34°C at the condenser.
• If the cooling system is switched off and the condenser temperature falls, the
ventilator speed is reduced until minimum speed is achieved.
• If the temperature is lower than 28 °C, the phase control is not triggered, the
ventilators come to a standstill.

• The ventilators run in a temperature-controlled manner also if the lid is open.
• If there is condenser overtemperature (overpressure in the system) i.e. temperature
sensor T3 indicates a temperature > 58 °C (3.31 V), the cooling system and the drive
are switched off, but the condenser ventilators continue running.
5.18 Ventilator
• The two ventilators cool down the refrigerant which flows through the condenser.
• The ventilator speed is controlled with the temperature sensor T3.
• This speed control keeps the pressure in the cooling system constant as far as
possible.
5.19 Offset compensation
• The offset compensation is carried out to balance the tolerances of the temperature
sensors and the electronic system.
After replacing: Offset compensation:
- a temperature sensor Compensation of the concerned temperature sensor.
- the supply board Compensation of the temperature sensors T2 and T3.
- the control panel Compensation of the temperature sensor T1 and read
out the old offset values of T2 and T3 and enter them

5.21 Handling of the centrifuge without a serial interface
The key
STOP
on the control panel is always activated. A centrifugation can be
terminated anytime by pressing the key
STOP
, no matter which is the position of the key-
operated switch.
5.21.1 Key-operated switch in middle position
The key-operated switch is in middle position with no LOCK-message on the display.
Following actions are available by using the keys and the control knob:
• START and STOP
• Entering of centrifuge programs (STO)
• Recalling of already stored programs (RCL)
5.21.2 Key-operated-switch position LOCK 1
The key-operated switch is turned counter-clockwise to end-position and LOCK 1
appears in the display.

5.21.3 Key-operated-switch position LOCK 2
The key-operated switch is turned clockwise to end-position and LOCK 2 appears in the
display.
Following commands by using the keys are possible:
• START and STOP
• It is possible to control the centrifuge by the serial interface
Positioning of the rotor is only possible in key position LOCK 2.
5.22 General information about positioning
• Accuracy of positioning for the different rotor-positions <= 0.6 mm (referring to the
supporting lugs on the rotor).
• After each centrifugation (rotor is in standstill) the machine sets the position of the
rotor automatically to rotor-position 1.
• With a magnetic brake each rotor-position is mechanically fixed after achieving a
final position.
The magnetic brake can be deactivated:
- by using the command Close hatch
- by using the command Go to Position 1-4.
- by a time-out, 10 minutes after reaching the last position.
• Control by serial interface only possible in key-operated switch position LOCK 2
(Turn key-operated switch clockwise to end-position).
5.23 Address of the centrifuge
Each centrifuge that is being communicated with has to have its own address.
The PC uses this address to communicate with the centrifuge. This serial address can
be compared with the name of a person.
Each address in a system can only be given ONCE. In the Hettich-BUS system there
can be managed up to 29 centrifuges.
Address range:
1. Address A = 41hex
2. Address B = 42hex
to
26. Address Z = 5Ahex
and
27. Address [ = 5Bhex
28. Address \ = 5Chex
29. Address ] = 5Dhex
The address set ex works is the last one ( ] = 29. address ). This address must be
correctly set by the customer.
Starting with address "A", each centrifuge has to get its own address in ascending
order.
The order of addresses should not be interrupted as the PC would waste time for the
query of an address not given.
For adress setting see chapter "Set the address at the centrifuge".

6 Troubleshooting procedures
• Fuses in installation in which centrifuge is installed are intact.
• Supply voltage present at (see connecting diagram):
− Connecting cable
− Appliance plug
− Overvoltage protection (F1)
− Mains switch (Q1)
− Supply board, plugs X21 and X29.
• Look for the displayed error code in the chapter "Error messages".
• Remedy the error according to the instructions.
• Carry out a functional check after every repair and whenever a component is
replaced, see chapter "Functional check after a repair".
