This document describes how to setup Dynamic Node Allocaon (DNA) in B&R Automaon Studio with the
Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK.

2. Overview
The Dynamic Node Allocaon (DNA) funconality in POWERLINK is used to set the node number of a node from
the managing node over the network. This applicaon note will describe how to set the node number of an
Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK via DNA using B&R Automaon Studio.
NOTE
DNA is supported by the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK from rmware version 1.17.
NOTE
To enable the DNA funconality in the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK, the value of the node
number in the Network Conguraon Object (Instance #1) must be set to 0.
I.e. if a switch for seng Node ID is present on the applicaon it must be set to 0.
NOTE
Make sure the PLC and the used B&R Automaon Studio version supports the DNA funconality.
Two dierent topologies will be described, Line topology and Star topology.
2.1. Line Topology
Nodes with built-in hub are connected in a line, and the node number can be set on all nodes via DNA if
supported.
NOTE
Nodes with DNA enabled can not be used together with nodes not supporng DNA or with DNA
disabled.

2.2. Star Topology
A convenonal HUB can be used to create a star-topology. However, since the ports of a convenonal HUB
cannot be controlled, node numbers for nodes connected directly to the HUB (head-of-line nodes) cannot be set
with DNA. They must be set explicitly at the nodes.
NOTE
Nodes with DNA enabled must be placed in separate segments from nodes not supporng DNA or
with DNA disabled.

3. Conguraon
3.1. Enable DNA in B&R Automaon Studio
1. Start B&R Automaon Studio and create a new project. Make sure B&R Automaon Studio is updated to
support the DNA funconality.
2. Add your PLC to the project. Make sure the PLC supports the DNA funconality. In this example, the B&R
X20CP1684 PLC is used.
3. Upload the XDD-le from the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK using the HMS POWERLINK XDD File
Uploader.
NOTE
The le uploader requires the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK to have a node number not
equal to 0.

4. Import the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK XDD-le under Tools -> Manage 3rd-Party
Devices…
5. Select the PLC and open conguraon for the POWERLINK port (IF3 in this case).
6. Select manual DNA conguraon.
NOTE
The DNA conguraon of the PLC must be set to manual when using DNA devices from third
party devices, e.g. the HMS Anybus CompactCom 40.
7. In the System Designer view, connect the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK to the desired module
according to the topology.
8. Select the Anybus CompactCom 40 POWERLINK and open conguraon.

9. Under the Dynamic Node Allocaon secon, change DNA to on. Congure the DNA parameters according to
the table below. When using DNA, the node number set in Automaon studio is applied to the POWERLINK
nodes.

10. To enable the DNA funconality on POWERLINK nodes, the node number must be set to 0 at the nodes. For
the Anybus CompactCom 40, the value of the node number in the Network Conguraon object (instance
#1) must be set to 0.
11. Transfer the conguraon to the PLC. DNA will now be used to set the node number of DNA enabled nodes.
