For firmware versions 5.10, 5.20, 5.30 and later, this Latest News
supplements the other documents distributed with your
HP SureStore CD/DVD-ROM Server (HP J3278B, J4150A,
J4152A). It replaces the Latest News: Firmware Version 5.10
(P/N 5969-3510).
Note
for Upgrades
❏This release 5.30 can be used to upgrade only the releases
starting with 5.06. It cannot be used with releases starting
with version 4.00, such as those used with the HP SureStore
CD-ROM Server/Tower (HP J3276A, J3277A, J3278A). Your
existing firmware version is identified on the Administration
web page for This Server, when the server is highlighted (and
in the config.ini file in the ServerProperties folder in the
System folder).
User-Level Access Control for Windows
Now Managed with Native NT Tools
You can now manage the server’s Windows (SMB) user-level
security in the same way you manage it for your other NT servers.
The HP CD/DVD-ROM Server now emulates a Windows NT 4.0
server. You use more of the native tools for NT servers, such as
User Manager for Domains. You can add, remove, and change
rights on the Properties page for a folder.
User-level security as described here is recommended for networks
based on Windows NT Server. Note that share-level security is the
alternative recommended for Windows workgroup-based networks
without a domain controller (also known as the PDC, DC, or
authentication server).
CAUTION! ❏If you had configured user-level access rights on the server and
you now upgrade to firmware version 5.20 or later, then all
previous access rights configured for SMB will be removed.
HP recommends that before you upgrade the firmware, you
check and record any special user access settings you have:
Click the Administration tab, click [Discs & Drives], click the
icon in the Access Rights column, and click the Windows
Security tab.

Setting Up
User-Level
Access Control
❏As in previous versions, you must have TCP/IP enabled (with
Windows SMB) and must have set up your domain controller for
the TCP/IP DNS parameters.
❏In the User’s Guide, this section replaces the section “User-
Level Access Control”at the end of chapter 4. In the Quick
Installation Guide, this section replaces items 3–6 listed under
“Step 4. Set up Windows (SMB)”.
On a PC on the same network as the HP CD/DVD-ROM Server:
1. Start the web browser, access the web page for the server, and
select the Quick Setup tab. Click the Wizard icon. On the main
wizard page select Windows (SMB) and [Start >].
For Workgroup, specify an NT domain that can authenticate
your users.

2. On the next page, set User-level access control and [Next >].
3. On the next page, set Create a Computer Account in the Domain.
Specify the Administrator user name and password for the
domain controller. Click [Next >].
4. On the Summary page, verify the settings for steps 1–3 above.
Click [Finish].
This restarts the server with the changed configuration and
returns you to the main wizard page. When the Status indicator
remains green and the SCSI indicator is off, the server is ready
for use. This may take from a few seconds to five minutes.

The server’s event log (select the Administration tab and then
the Event Log button) will record the server successfully joining
the domain you specified.
Note ❏An alternative to steps 1–4 above is to use the Detailed View
rather than the Wizard. Select the Windows (SMB) tab. On the
configuration page, you can click the [Change] button to set the
parameters.

On the domain controller (also known as the PDC, DC, or
authentication server), do the following steps. (You can use
a remote workstation with the Remote Services utility.)
5. Log onto the domain controller.
6. Map a drive to the CD server’s Volumes share, as shown below.
7. Explore the mapped drive. Right-click the access point to which
you will assign permissions for a specific user or group (for
example, Volumes or specific disc). Select the Properties page for
that access point.

9. By default, Users have read access and Administrators have full
access, as seen on this Properties page. Add or remove access for
the desired users and groups; see Microsoft documentation for full
instructions.
Note ❏You must use this Properties page for the mapped drive on the
domain controller, not the Properties page in Server Manager
for Domains.
❏To make changes to the users and groups themselves, use User
Manager for Domains.
Features and
Limitations
•Trusted domains are supported, just as for other Windows NT
servers. Users from trusted domains can now use a server
installed in a different domain.
•Local as well as global groups can be used to set group-
based access to the server. The groups will be synchronized with
the domain controller every fifteen minutes.
Global groups defined on a domain contain users only from
within the authentication domain.
Local groups defined on a domain contain users from within the
domain and may contain other global groups from within the
domain and from trusted domains.
•Remote Administration:
Just as with Windows NT server, once User Manager for
Domains has been set up, access rights can be managed using
the standard Windows Explorer. Access the Properties page of a
folder and add, remove, or change the security on disc or drive.
The Server Manager for Domains is partially supported:
•You can view the server and the user statistics.
•You can delete the server from the domain.
Limitations:
•Descriptions cannot be changed.
•New shares cannot be created or deleted.
•Replication, Alert, and Services are not supported.
•Non-English Names: International (non-ASCII) characters
are now supported for server, workgroup, and domain names.
Unicode is now supported for user and group names.

FTP Access Protocol Support
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is now supported as a network protocol
for access to files on the server. Users can use their familiar FTP
commands to copy files from the server.
Client Access to
Discs
From a PC on the network, two types of FTP access are permitted:
•Administrator username access to the root:
The username root and the server password (by default pass)
will always gain access to the root, containing the Volumes
folder (all discs) and the System folder (configuration files).
•Configured FTP username access to Volumes:
Configure an alternative FTP username and password to
provide access to the Volumes folder (containing all discs).
CAUTION! ❏No security restrictions apply to FTP users. A username and
password (as described above) provide access to all discs and
contents (the Volumes folder). Passwords are the only lock.
Configuring the
Server for FTP
Start the web browser, access the web page for the server, and
select the Quick Setup tab. Click the Detailed View icon. On the
resulting Protocols page, click the FTP tab. The settings are:
•FTP User Name
FTP User Password
Set up a username and password for FTP access by clients to all
the discs, in the Volumes folder. By default, no username is
configured here, so only the administrator username root and
the current server password can be used. See the preceding
“Client Access to Discs”section (page 8) for more information.
•FTP Time Out
You can optionally configure the time in seconds of inactivity
after which the FTP session is closed.
•FTP Max Users
You can optionally configure the maximum number of simulta-
neous FTP sessions.

Pure IP for Novell NetWare
Documentation Notes
❏In the User’s Guide, the “Novell NetWare/IP”section near the
end of chapter 5 is replaced by this section.
❏In the Quick Installation Guide, item 4 under “Step 5. Set up
Novell NetWare (NCP)”should now refer to an additional page
(“Protocols”) that you should skip by clicking [Next > .
The HP CD/DVD-ROM Server now supports NCP transported over
pure IP. In Novell NetWare 5 environments, the server can be
integrated as any other 5.0 server, accessible using IPX,
NetWare/IP, and pure IP simultaneously. The compatibility mode
of NetWare 4.11 is no longer necessary.
Now, both IPX and pure IP are both enabled by default. NetWare/IP
remains as an option available for NetWare 4.11 environments.
Also, you can disable IPX and run NCP over IP only. See the
following section for these configuration options.
Configuring IP
for Novell
NetWare
1. To use the IP protocol in NetWare, see Novell’s documentation
to make sure that the NetWare TCP/IP environment is fully
implemented first.
2. Configure the server for IP, setting the following parameters.
Refer to the User’s Guide or Quick Installation Guide.
•IP address (the following items must correspond to it)
•Subnet Mask
•Default Router (gateway)
•Primary DNS Server
•Secondary DNS Server
3. Configure the server for NetWare.
a. Select your protocol combination:
IPX Pure IP NetWare/IP Instructions

Note Disabling IPX
As long as IPX remains enabled, clients without the speci-
fied pure IP or NetWare/IP support will be routed through a
Novell server with an IPX/IP gateway. You can disable the
IPX protocol on the page described below in step b if all
clients are running the specified IP protocol binding.
b. Use the configuration page for NCP protocols: Start the web
browser, access the web page for the server, and select the
Quick Setup tab. Click the Detailed View icon. On the
resulting Protocols page, click the NetWare (NCP) tab.
Near the bottom of the page, click the checkboxes for the
three protocols—Enable IPX, Enable PureIP, Enable
NetWare/IP—to disable or enable each one as you decided
after referring to the table under step a above (page 9). See
the illustration below.
(If you set Enable NetWare/IP , also specify the DSS Server if
one is used.)
4. After the server is restarted and a delay of about 5 minutes, clients
that support the newly specified protocols will connect directly to
the server peer-to-peer.
If the clients cannot then access the server, do the following:
a. Switch off the power to the server.
b. Wait 20 minutes for the SAP table to be flushed.
c. Switch on power to the server.
d. Wait 5 minutes for the server to be visible. Try access again.

Added Method for Upgrading Firmware
Another faster method has been added for updating the firmware
(affecting chapter 9 in the User’s Guide). Once you have firmware
version 5.20 or later on your server, you will be able to update in
this new way thereafter.
This can be done using Windows (SMB), Novell NetWare (NCP), or
UNIX (NFS), but not using AppleTalk (AFP). FTP is not needed.
This can be done anywhere you have the root mapped to a drive.
1. Obtain a copy of the firmware update file from your HP-autho-
rized dealer or from HP’s Electronic Support services.
2. Copy the firmware update file to the server’s \system\flash\
folder in the root or sys folder.
The file is then quickly copied to the server’s Flash memory.
The Status indicator flashes yellow.
The server automatically restarts with the new server firm-
ware. The Status indicator flashes green until the restart is
completed, and then it is solid green.
CAUTION! ❏Do not press the Power switch or otherwise interrupt the
transfer, or the server may become inoperative.
Windows Time Synchronization
The server’s time is now periodically synchronized with the domain
controller when it is configured. This takes place automatically.
New Page for Managing the Cache
For the HP J4150A SureStore CD-ROM Server Plus, a new view of
the Discs & Drives page allows better management of the cache.
For View, you can select Cached Discs (as a third alternative to
Discs and file system and Drives). Cached discs are listed. You can
manage the disk space by deleting specific cached volumes. You can
archive volumes.

Easier Setting of IP Address for Windows
For Windows,
with Class B or C
Address
A new additional method for setting the server’s IP address is
easier than using ARP or setting up DHCP or BOOTP. You need
no longer configure the IP address before using a web browser to
access the server’s web page. To use the new method, you must be
using a Microsoft or IBM network running SMB over NBT
(NetBIOS/TCP/IP), and you must be using Class B or C addresses
on the network.
Note ❏To determine IP address class:
Find the first byte of the IP addresses on your network in the
ranges in the following table. If the corresponding class is B
or C, you may use the method described in this section.
Steps 1. Determine the IP address to be assigned to the server, and
determine its class (as shown in the preceding table).
2. On a label on the server, find the server’s LAN hardware (MAC)
address, for example, 0060B0B6FC1B. Note only the last 6 digits.
3. Start a standard web browser (such as Netscape Navigator or
Microsoft Internet Explorer) on a client on the same network as
the server.
4. (Within 30 minutes after starting or restarting the server) enter
the following in the Location/Address field in the browser:
The initial bytes not specified are taken from the client you use.
When the address is successfully set, the main web page for the
server is displayed in the browser.
Range Class

AFP Protocol Support for Apple Macintosh
The HP SureStore CD-DVD/ROM Server now supports the
AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) over AppleTalk with EtherTalk,
and over TCP/IP. Any Macintosh client using the native Macintosh
network access tools (such as Chooser) can access any Hierarchical
File System (HFS) CD or DVD on the HP server. These Macintosh
protocols are supported simultaneously with the other protocols
such as IPX/SPX, Microsoft networking, NFS, TCP/IP and HTTP.
Features •Supported operating systems include Mac OS 7.x, 8.x, and
MacOS X Server using AppleShare 3 or later.
•Discs written in HFS or ISO9660 format, or both, can be shared.
So, both PC and Macintosh clients may be given access to the
same disc. Data and applications designed only for one operat-
ing system may not be usable by other platforms; however,
some files types such as Microsoft Word or Excel, or graphics
formats such as PDF and EPS, can be used by both platforms.
(Conversion of data between Macintosh and PC formats is not
provided.)
•HFS-formatted discs can be cached on the HP J4150A
SureStore CD-ROM Server Plus.
•You can configure the AppleTalk zone(s) in which the server is
to appear.
•For secure Macintosh environments, you can configure access
rights by user and group using a remote Macintosh computer as
an authentication server. Remote user lists and group lists are
supported.
Or you can assign access rights by share using specific pass-
words.

How to Use the
Documentation
This section describes how to set up the server for Apple Macintosh
clients on networks using the AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) over
AppleTalk and EtherTalk. It describes the procedures for accessing
the server from a Macintosh client, for configuring the server
specifically for your network, and for setting up additional
Macintosh clients for access. This section has information that
fulfills a function similar to that served by chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 in
the User’s Guide.
If your network runs AFP over TCP/IP, then you can assign an
IP address to the server, you can configure and administer the
server using a web browser, and you can access the server’s files
from each Macintosh client using a web browser as well as the
Chooser. For instructions, begin with this Latest News instead of
beginning with the procedures in the User’s Guide in chapter 3,
“Setup for IP Networks and HTTP”.
Reference on Server File System. Different workstations need
different points of access to the server. The network administrator
or installer, for example, needs access to configure and monitor the
server and to configure access rights. Then, the administrator may
want to set up all the clients with access to the discs but without
access to the configuration files stored on the server. Please refer to
the description of access points and the file system used on the
server, in the reference chapter 7 in the User’s Guide.
Server Setup Procedure for Administrator Access and
IP Address Setting
1. On a Macintosh, open the Chooser from the Apple menu.
2. Click the AppleShare icon.

3. From the Select a file server list, select the entry for your new
HP server. The default server name is HPhhhhhh_AT, where
hhhhhh are the last six digits of the server’s MAC address. The
MAC address is displayed on the LAN Address label on top of the
tower. (The server name can be changed later during
configuration.) Click [OK].
If the AppleTalk protocol is not running on this Macintosh, then
the server will not be listed in the Select a file server list. In
this case, click [Server IP Address...], enter the IP address
assigned to the server, and click [Connect].
4. Select Registered User for administrative access. By default, the
user name is set to root and the password is set to pass. Enter
them and click [Connect].
5. Select the System folder and click [OK].
6. Open the System icon created on the desktop and open the
ServerProperties folder.
7. Open the config.ini file.
8. Go to the “[IP]”section and change the “InternetAddress”
setting shown to the IP address assigned to the HP server.

9. Go to the “[Server]”section and set “Restart = yes”to restart
the server.
Note ❏In this file, you must leave at least one space before and after
the equals sign (=) .
10. Select Save from the File menu.
You will lose connection to the System folder when the server
restarts. When restarting is finished you will see a dialog box
asking for confirmation of the message that the server’s
connection has unexpectedly closed down. Click [OK].
The System folder will disappear from the desktop. Go on to the
next procedure.
Procedure for Server Configuration Using the Wizard
After you have set the IP address using the previous procedure, the
server configuration can be customized most easily by using web
pages for Administrator access. You must be running TCP/IP on the
on the Macintosh as well as on the server. This procedure can also
be done in a similar way on a PC.
1. On the Macintosh, open the Internet browser.
2. Open the location with the server’s IP address as follows:
Alternatively, use the host name associated with the IP address
and assigned to the server.
You will see the initial server web page, as shown below.
3. Select the Quick Setup tab.
Format: http://<IP-address>

4. When prompted, enter the server username (default is root) and
password (default is pass). You will see the initial Quick Setup
configuration page, shown next.
5. Click the Wizard icon. You will see the main Network Settings
Wizard page shown next.

6. On the main wizard page, select TCP/IP and click [Start >]. On the
subsequent
TCP/IP Wizard—IP Addresses page, select Manually.
Click [Next >].
7. On the TCP/IP Wizard—Manual IP Addresses page, shown below,
beneath the IP address you set in step 8 of the procedure on
page 15, enter the subnet mask for your local network. (0.0.0.0
means that automatic router sensing is used.) Enter the default
router, or gateway. (0.0.0.0 means that no default router is set.)
Click [Next >].
8. On the “TCP/IP Wizard—DNS Parameters”page, if you have a
DNS server, set the domain name and the primary and secondary
DNS servers. Click [Next >].
9. On the next web page, if you are using a WINS server, select
Enable WINS Resolution and supply the WINS server
IP addresses. Click [Next >].
10. On the last page, click Finish.
11. On the main Wizard page, select Macintosh (AFP) and
click [Start >]. You will see the Name page.
12. Enter a server name to be presented to the Macintosh clients on
the network, if you wish to change the server name shown.
Click [Next >].

13. The network will be scanned for all available zones and they will
be listed for Zone. By default, the server will select the default
zone of the nearest router. To change it, select the preferred zone.
If no router is attached to this segment, you will see “No Zones
Available”for Zone. Click [Next >]. You will see the Authentication
page, shown next.
14. If you want access restrictions to be administered by a remote
Macintosh computer as a user authentication server, check the
Yes checkbox and specify the server.
That Macintosh computer must have file sharing enabled
and must have the user lists, groups lists, and user pass-
words defined. Those definitions will be used to control
access to shares on the HP CD/DVD-ROM server. Setting
the volume permissions is described on page 25.
If you want to define passwords on the HP CD/DVD-ROM
server instead of on an authentication server, do not check the
Yes checkbox. You will have the opportunity to set passwords
for each share as described for setting permissions on page 25.

15. Click [Next >]. You will see the Protocols page, shown below.
Select the protocol(s) currently being used on your network.
Click [Next >].
16. When you see the Finish page, click [Finish]. Click [Close], and
you will return to the Quick Setup configuration page. If you
have made any changes, click [Restart ]Server] to put the changes
into effect.
This restarts the server with the configuration changes and
returns you to the main Network Settings Wizard page (see
step 5 on page 17). When the Status indicator remains green
and the SCSI indicator is off, the server is ready for use. This
may take a few seconds to five minutes.
Return to the Quick Setup configuration page (see step 4 on
page 17) by clicking [Close].
The next procedure is used for some optional configuration.
