You also need:
• A twisted-pair network cable with RJ-45 connectors (not included).
• Two power outlets.
• An IP address, subnet mask, and, optionally, the default gateway
(router). Configure them using DHCP or BOOTP, or manually at the
server control panel. See your IP administrator for this information.


When the control panel prompts you (first two messages at left), do one of the following:
•To set the IP settings using DHCP or BOOTP, press ✔.
-or-
•To set the IP settings manually at the control panel, follow these steps:
1. Press ✘. The third message at left appears, with the first 0 blinking.
2. Enter the IP address. Use ▲▼to change the blinking number, and press ✔to select a
number and move to the next space. (Use ✘to move to a previous space.) Once you set
the last number, press ✔to accept the new IP address.
3. Enter the subnet mask. Press ▼. To change the subnet mask, press ✔and enter a new
one the same way you entered the IP address. When finished, press ✔.
4. Enter the default gateway . Press ▼. To change the default gateway, press ✔and enter
a new one the same way you entered the IP address. When finished, press ✔.
5. Press ✘to exit setup mode, and then press ✔to confirm.
Connect the network cable

On the back of the server, attach
the network cable between the
server and the network connector
at the wall.


Plug in power cords


1. Caution! Ensure that the
voltage switches are set
correctly for your country.

2. Plug the two power cords into
the back of the server, and
then plug the other ends of
the cords into the power
outlets.
Caution! 
If you need different power
cords than the ones supplied,
use power cords approved for
your country. See chapter 3 in
the User's Guide.


On the front of the server, switch on the power and 
check the following:


If any of these checks fail, see chapter 11 in the User's Guide.

Main power light above power switch is 
on.


Control panel display shows varying 
self-test and loading messages. 

Power and activity lights for all hard
drives blink indicating self-test, and 
then power lights remain green.


Power display reads HP.








The setup takes a few
seconds. When it finishes,
check that the control
panel display shows the
default name of the server
on the first line, and the
second line alternates
between the date, the
message "no alerts," and
the IP address.


Your HD Server 4000 is
now ready to use.

Use the HD Server
Admin tool if you want
to complete optional
steps such as:

• adding users and
groups 
• adding shares
• setting permissions 
• setting advanced
network settings 
• configuring local backup (if optional tape drive is installed)
Using Windows Explorer
on client computers, map
the server to the client
computers, or have users
do this task themselves.
See chapter 5 in the User's
Guide for more
information.


Make server accessible

At a PC workstation on
the network, open a
web browser and type
http:// <IP address>
The installation wizard
(at right) appears, and
only appears during
this first installation.
Follow the instructions
on the screen. 
When you finish, the 
HD Server Admin tool
opens.
