GENERALINFORMATION
Description
Thisoperatingandservicemanualcoversthreedualrange
HPpowersupplies,E3610A,E3611A,andE3612A.All
modelsarecompact,generalpurposebenchsuppliesthat
areparticulariyusefulforpoweringdevelopmentalIC
circuits,bothlinearanddigital.Unlessstatedotherwise,all
informationinthismanualappliesequallytoallthree
models.Thedesiredoutputrangeisselectedbythefront
panelRANGEpushbutton.Theoutputcanbecontinuously
adjustedforvoltageandcurrentthroughouteitheroutput
range.
ThefrontpanelVOLTAGEcontrolcanbeusedtoestablish
thevoltagelimitwhenthesupplyisusedasa constant
currentsourcearrdtheCURRENTcontrolcanbeusedto
establishtheoutputcurrentlimitwhenthesupplyisusedas
aconstantvoltagesource.TheCCSETpushbuttonallows
thecurrentlimitvaluetobeconvenientlysetusingthe
CURRENTcontrolwithoutshortingtheoutput.
Thefrontpanelincludesa digitalvoltmeter/ammeter.
A3 1/2digit(E3611A3 digit)voltagedisplayand3 digit

INSTALLATION
Inspection
Whenyoureceiveyourpowersupply,inspect it forany
obviousdamagethatmayhaveoccurredduringshipment.
Ifthere is damage,notifythecarrierandthenearestHP
SalesOfficeimmediately.Warrantyinformationisprintedon
theinsidefrontcover of thismanual.Savetheshipping
cartonandpackingmaterialsincasethesupplyhastobe
returnedtoHewlett-Packardinthefuture. If youreturnthe
supplyforservice,attacha tagidentifyingtheownerand
modelnumber.Alsoinclude a briefdescription ofthe
problem.
The"Turn-OnCheckoutProcedure"inthismanualcanbe
usedasanincominginspectioncheck to verifythatthe
supplyisoperational.Seetheappendixforteststhatverify
thesupply'sspecifications.
LocationAndCooling
Figure1 showstheoutlineshapeanddimensions of the
unit. It isshippedreadyforbenchoperationafterconnec-
tion toanac powersource.Thesupply isair cooled.
Sufficientspaceshouldbeallottedsothat a freeflow of
coolingaircanreachtherearoftheinstrumentwhenitisin
operation. It shouldbeusedinanareawheretheambient
temperaturedoes notexceed40degreesC.Thecurrent
derates1%perdegreeC between40°C-55°C.
InputPowerRequirements
Dependingonthelinevoltageoptionordered,thesupplyis
readytobeoperatedfromoneofthepowersourceslisted
intheSpecificationTable.Theinputvoltagerange,andthe
inputcurrentar>dpowerathighlinevoltageandfullloadis
listedforeachoption.
PowerCord
Thisinstrumentisequippedwitha threeconductorpower
cable. ThethirdcorKiuctor is thegrourxlconductorand
whenthecableispluggedintoanappropriatereceptacle,
theinstrument is grour>ded.Theoffsetpinonthepower
cablethreeprongconnectoristhegroundconnection.Inno
eventshouldthisinstrument be operatedwithout an
adequatecabinetgroundconnection.
Thepowersupplywasshippedwitha powercordforthe
typeofoutletusedatyourlocation. If theappropriatecord

Eachloadshouldbeconnectedtothepowersupplyoutput
terminalsusingseparatepairsofconnectingwires.Thiswill
minimizemutualcouplingeffectsbetweenloadsandwill
retainfulladvantageofthelowoutputimpedanceofthe
powersupply.Eachpairofconnectingwiresshouldbeas
shortaspossibleandtwistedorshieldedtoreducenoise
pickupdfa shieldisused,connectoneendtothepower
supplygroundterminalandleavetheothererxlunconnec-
ted.).
OperationBeyondRatedOutput
Theoutputcontrolscanadjustthevoltageorcurrentto
valuesabove(upto5%)theratedoutputasindicatedonthe
frontpaneldisplay.Althoughthesupplycanbeoperatedin
the5%overrangeregionwithoutbeingdamaged,itcannot
beguaranteedtomeetall ofitsperformancespecifications
inthisregion.

PulseLoadingConsklerations
Thepowersupplywillautomaticallycrossoverfrom
constant-voltagetoconstant-currentoperationinresponse
toanincrease(overthepresetlimit)intheoutputcurrent.
Althoughthepresetlimitmaybesethigherthanthe
averageoutputcurrent,Nghpeakcurrents(a8occurinpulse
loading)mayexceedthepresetcurrentlimitandcause
crossovertooccur.Ifthiscrossoverlimitingisnotdesired,
setthepresetlimitforthepeakrequirementandnotthe
average.
CapacitiveLoads
Aninternalcapacitor,acrosstheoutputterminalsofthe
powersupply,helpstosupplyhigh-currentpulsesofshort
durationduringconstantvoltageoperation.Anycapacitance
addedexternallywillimprovethepulsecurrentcapability.
butwilldecreasethesafetyprovidedbythecurrentlimiting
circuit.A high-currentpulsemaydamageloadcomponents
t>eforetheaverageoutputcurrentislargeenoughtocause
thecurrentlimitingcircuittooperate.
ReverseCurrentLoading
Activeloadsconnectedtothepowersupplymayactually
delivera reversecurrenttothepowersupplyduringa
portionofitsoperatingcycle.Anexternalsourcecannotbe
allowedtopumpcurrentintothesupplywithoutlossof
regulationandpossibledarnagetotheoutputcapacitor.To
avoidtheseeffects,itisnecessarytopreloadthesupply
witha dummyloadresistorsothatthepowersupply
deliverscurrentthroughtheentireoperatingcycleofthe
loaddevices.

AClinevoltageissteppeddownbythepowertransformerand
appliedtotherectifierandfilter.Therectifier-filterconvertstheAC
inputtorawDCwhichisfedtothepositiveoutputterminalvia
parallelseriesregulator(Q1andQ3)andcurrentsamplingresis-
tor(R2).Theregulator,partofthefeedbackloop,ismadetoalterits
conductiontomaintaina constantoutputvoltageorcurrent.The

Sincetheconstantvoltageamplifiertendstoachievezerooutput
impedanceandalterstheoutputcurrentwhenevertheloadresis-
tancechanges,whiletheconstantcurrentamplifiercausesthe
outputimpedancetobeinfiniteandchangestheoutputvoltagein
responsetoanyloadresistancechange,itisobviousthatthetwo
amplifierscannotoperatesimultaneously.Foranygivenvalueof
loadresistance,thepowersupplymustacteitherasa constant
voltagesourceorasa constantcurrentsource- itcannotbe both;
transferbetweenthesetwomodesIsaccomplishedatavalueofload
resistanceequaltotheratiooftheoutputvoltagecontrolsettingto
theoutputcurrentcontrolsetting.
Thereferenceandbiascircuitprovidesstablereferencevoltages
whichareusedbytheconstantvoltage/currenterroramplifiercircuits
forcomparisonpurpose.Thedigitalmetercircuitprovidesan
indicationofoutputvoltageandcurrentforconstantvoltageor
constantcurrentoperatingmodes.
ThedisplaypowercircuitprovidesvoltagewhichisusedbyA/D
converterandLEDdrive.
DiodeCR3isconnectedacrosstheoutputterminalsinreverse
polarity.Itprotectstheoutputelectrolyticcapacitorandtheseries
regulatortransistorfromtheeffectsofa reversevoltageapplied
acrosstheoutputterminals.

Themeasuringdevicemust be connected as close tothe output
terminals as possiblewhenmeasuring the outputimpedance,
transientresponse,regulation, or ripple ofthe powersupply in order

loadincludes the impedance ofthe leads tothe load and suchlead
