iv Hardware Replacement Guide

Overview
This guide is intended to be used by customers who are replacing Customer
Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are replacing
Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). In this guide, CRUs and FRUs will often be
referred to as parts.
This guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables,
switches, and certain mechanical parts can be replaced by trained service personnel
without the need for step-by-step procedures.
Note: Use only the parts provided by IBM.
This guide contains procedures for replacing the following parts:
vPower supply
vSystem board
vMicroprocessor
vMemory modules
vPCI adapter
vHard disk drive
vOptical drive
vDiskette drive
vKeyboard
vMouse
vInternal speaker
Safety information for replacing CRUs
Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the “Important
safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer. If
you no longer have this copy of the Quick Reference, you can obtain one online
from the World Wide Web at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/.
Safety information for replacing FRUs
Do not attempt any repair before reading the “Important safety information” in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. You can find the HMM on
the World Wide Web at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/.
Additional information resources
If you have Internet access, the most up-to-date information for your computer is
available from the World Wide Web.
You can find the following information:
vCRU removal and installation instructions
vPublications

Tools required
To replace some parts in your computer, you might need aflat-blade or Phillips
screwdriver. Additional tools might be needed for certain parts.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer
components.
When you are replacing apart, do not open the static-protective package
containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the
computer and you are ready to install the new part.
When you handle parts and other computer components, take these precautions to
avoid static-electricity damage:
vLimit your movement. Movement can cause static-electricity to build up around
you.
vAlways handle parts and other computer components carefully. Handle
adapters, memory modules, system boards, and microprocessors by the edges.
Never touch any exposed circuitry.
vPrevent others from touching the parts and other computer components.
vBefore you replace anew part, touch the static-protective package containing the
part to ametal expansion-slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the
computer for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity in the package
and your body.
vWhen possible, remove the new part from the static-protective packaging, and
install it directly in the computer without setting the part down. When this is
not possible, place the static-protective package that the part came in on a
smooth, level surface and place the part on it.
vDo not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface.

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware
Attention:
Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the “Important safety
information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. To obtain copies of the Quick
Reference or HMM,go to http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/.
Note: Use only the parts provided by IBM.
Removing the cover
Important
Turn off the computer and wait 3to 5minutes to let the computer cool
before removing the computer cover.
1. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or tapes) from the drives, shut down your
operating system, and turn off all attached devices.
2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.
3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords,
input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the
computer. See “Locating connectors on the front of the computer” on page 2
and “Locating connectors on the rear of the computer” on page 3.
4. Remove any locking devices such as apadlock or Kensington lock that secure
the computer cover.
5. Press the cover-release button on the right side cover, slide the cover to the
rear, and remove.

Replacing the system board assembly
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 5.
2. Lay the computer on its side to make it easier to access the system board.
3. Carefully note the location of all cable connections on the system board. It will
be necessary to reconnect them correctly after you install the new system
board assembly. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4to
locate the cables.
Important
Note the cable routing. It is important to route the cables the same way
after you install the new system board.
4. Disconnect all cables connected to the system board.
5. Remove the air baffle by pressing on the tab and pulling the air baffle up.
6. Remove any PCI adapter cards. See “Replacing aPCI adapter” on page 20.

the mounting tabs and lift it out.
9. Place the defective system board next to the new system board on aclean, flat
surface.
10. Remove all memory modules from the defective system board, and install
them in the same connector on the new system board. See “Replacing a
memory module” on page 19. Return here after installing the memory
modules.
11. Remove the heat sink and microprocessor from the defective system board,
and install it on the new system board. Perform steps 5on page 14 through
step 14 on page 18. Return here after installing the microprocessor.
Chapter 2. Replacing hardware 11

12. Install the new system board assembly into the computer chassis by aligning
the four slots in the metal plate on the bottom of the system board with the
tabs in the chassis.
Important
Make sure to correctly align the metal plate on the bottom of the system
board with the tabs in the chassis. Otherwise, the system board might be
damaged when you install the screws.
13. Align the seven screw holes, and install the screws.
14. Reinstall all adapter cards. See “Replacing aPCI adapter” on page 20.
15. Route the fan cable through the notch on the side of the air baffle. Then,
reinstall the air baffle by aligning the tabs with the holes in the chassis, and
press the air baffle down until it is secure.
16. Reconnect all cables that were disconnected from the system board. Make sure
all cables are routed correctly. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on
page 4for cable locations.
