amodule containing alithium battery, replace it only with the same module
type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can

Chapter 1. Introduction
This Installation Guide contains instructions for setting up the IBM IntelliStation
® M
Pro Type 6218 computer. This document contains information about:
vSetting up and cabling the computer
vStarting and configuring the computer
vSetting up the operating system
Packaged with this Installation Guide is the Device Drivers CD, which contains
device drivers and hardware-specific support software.
The IBM IntelliStation Documentation CD is also included. This CD provides
detailed information about the computer (see “The IntelliStation Documentation CD”
on page 2for more detailed information).
You can obtain up-to-date information about the computer and other IBM products
at http://www.ibm.com
®
/intellistation/.
The computer model and serial number are on labels on the bottom of the
computer and on the lower-right side of the bezel. You will need these numbers to
register the computer with IBM.

Note: The computer keys cannot be duplicated by locksmiths. If you lose them,
order replacement keys from the key manufacturer. The key serial number
and the telephone number of the manufacturer are on atag that is attached
to the keys.
You can rack-mount the computer on ashelf, but do not rack-mount it on rails.

The computer comes with Microsoft
® Windows ® XP Professional or Red Hat
Enterprise Linux
™ Workstation preinstalled (depending on the model).
To install another operating system, follow the instructions in the documentation that
comes with the operating system and any updates. Then, follow the instructions in
the readme file on the Device Drivers CD to install the support software.
Note: If you install another operating system, you might need additional software or
device drivers. Some preinstalled device drivers are available on the Device
Drivers CD. If you experience problems with the device drivers that you
install from this CD, you can obtain the latest device drivers at
http://www.ibm.com/support/.
Before installing any operating system, make sure that you obtain the latest
updates. Contact the operating-system manufacturer or, if applicable, check the
manufacturer’s Web site to obtain the updates.
Additional information about operating systems is posted periodically at
http://www.ibm.com/support/.
The IntelliStation Documentation CD
The IBM IntelliStation Documentation CD contains documentation for the computer
in Portable Document Format (PDF) and includes the IBM Documentation Browser
to help you find information quickly.
Hardware and software requirements
The IBM IntelliStation Documentation CD requires the following minimum hardware
and software:
vMicrosoft Windows NT
® 4.0 (with Service Pack 3or later),Windows 2000, or Red
Hat Linux.
v100 MHz microprocessor.
v32 MB of RAM.
vAdobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (or later) or xpdf, which comes with Linux operating
systems. Acrobat Reader software is included on the CD, and you can install it
when you run the Documentation Browser.
Using the Documentation Browser
Use the Documentation Browser to browse the contents of the CD, read brief
descriptions of the documents, and view documents using Adobe Acrobat Reader or
xpdf. The Documentation Browser automatically detects the regional settings in use
on the computer and displays the information in the language for that region (if
available). If adocument is not available in the language for that region, the English
language version is displayed.
Use one of the following procedures to start the Documentation Browser:
vIf Autostart is enabled, insert the documentation CD into the CD drive. The
Documentation Browser starts automatically.
vIf Autostart is disabled or is not enabled for all users, use one of the following
procedures:
–If you are using aWindows operating system, insert the documentation CD
into the CD drive, and click Start --> Run.In the Open field, type
e:\win32.bat

where eis the drive letter of the CD drive, and click OK.
–If you are using Red Hat Linux, insert the documentation CD into the CD drive
and run the following command from the /mnt/cdrom directory:
sh runlinux.sh
Select the computer from the Product menu. The Available Topics list displays all
the documents for the computer. Some documents might be in folders. Aplus sign
(+) indicates each folder or document that has additional documents under it. Click
the plus sign to display the additional documents.
When you select adocument, adescription of the document appears under Topic
Description.To select more than one document, press and hold the Ctrl key while
you select the documents. Click View Book to view the selected document or
documents in Acrobat Reader or xpdf. If you selected more than one document, all
the selected documents are opened in Acrobat Reader or xpdf.
To search all the documents, type aword or word string in the Search field and
click Search.The documents in which the word or word string appears are listed in
order of the most occurrences. Click adocument to view it, and press Crtl+F to use
the Acrobat search function or press Alt+F to use the xpdf search function within the
document.
Click Help for detailed information about using the Documentation Browser.

Inventory checklist
Take an inventory of items as you unpack them to make sure that you have all of
the components. If any items are missing or damaged, contact your place of
purchase. The following items come with the IBM IntelliStation MPro Type 6218

If you are missing an item, contact your place of purchase.
Selecting alocation for the computer
Make sure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical
outlets for the computer, monitor, and any other devices. Select alocation for the
computer where it will remain dry. Leave approximately 50 mm (2 in.) of space
around the computer for proper air circulation. For information about arranging the
computer and ease-of-use, see the following sections.
Arranging the workspace
To get the most from the computer, arrange both the equipment you use and your
work area to suit your needs and the kind of work you do. Your comfort is of
foremost importance, but light sources, air circulation, and the location of electrical
outlets can also affect the way you arrange your workspace.
Comfort
The following guidelines will help you decide what working position suits you best.
Choose acomfortable chair to reduce fatigue from sitting in the same position for
long periods. The backrest and seat should adjust independently and provide good
support. The seat should have acurved front to relieve pressure on the thighs.
Adjust the seat so that your thighs are parallel to the floor and your feet are either
flat on the floor, or on afootrest.
When using the keyboard, keep your forearms parallel to the floor and your wrists
in aneutral, comfortable position. Try to keep alight touch on the keyboard, and
your hands and fingers relaxed. Change the angle of the keyboard for maximum
comfort by adjusting the position of the keyboard feet.
Adjust the monitor so that the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level.
Place the monitor at acomfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24
in.), and position it so that you can view it without having to twist your body.
Glare and lighting
Position the monitor to minimize glare and reflections from overhead lights,
windows, and other light sources. Place the monitor at right angles to light sources
whenever possible. Reduce overhead lighting, if necessary, by turning off lights or

using lower wattage bulbs. If you install the monitor near awindow, use curtains or
blinds to block the sunlight. You might have to adjust the brightness and contrast
controls on the monitor as the lighting changes throughout the day.
Where it is impossible to avoid reflections or to adjust the lighting, place an
antiglare filter over the screen. However, these filters might affect the clarity of the
screen image; try them only after you have exhausted other methods of reducing
glare.
Dust compounds problems associated with glare. Clean the monitor screen
periodically using asoft cloth moistened with anonabrasive, liquid glass cleaner.
Air circulation
The computer and monitor produce heat. The computer pulls in fresh air and forces
out hot air. The monitor lets hot air escape through vents. Blocking the air vents can
cause overheating, possibly resulting in malfunction or damage. Place the computer
and monitor so that nothing blocks the air vents; usually 50 mm (2 in.) of air space
is sufficient. Also, make sure the vented air is not blowing on someone else.
Electrical outlets and cable lengths
The location of electrical outlets and the length of device power cords and cables
might determine the final placement of the computer.
When arranging your work space:
vAvoid the use of extension cords. Whenever possible, plug the computer power
cord directly into an electrical outlet.
vKeep power cords and cables neatly routed away from walkways and other areas
where they might be accidentally dislodged.

Controls and LEDs
This section identifies the controls, LEDs, and front connectors on the IntelliStation
MPro Type 6218 computer. See “Cabling the computer” on page 11 for an
illustration of the connectors on the rear of the computer.

CD or DVD drive activity LED
When this LED is lit, it indicates that the CD or DVD drive is in use.
CD or DVD eject button
Press this button to insert aCD or DVD into or remove aCD or DVD from
the CD or DVD drive.
AC power LED
When this green LED is lit, it indicates that the computer is connected to an
ac power source. This LED is on the rear of the computer.
Power-supply error LED
When this amber LED is lit, it indicates that apower-supply error has
occurred. This LED is on the rear of the computer.
Diskette drive activity LED
When this LED is lit, it indicates that the diskette drive is in use.
Diskette-eject button
Press this button to release adiskette from the diskette drive.
Note: The diskette drive is an optional feature on some models.
