Before you begin
Read this information before beginning your installation.
Before you begin your installation, print and complete a Configuration worksheet for your storage system
to gather the information that the software setup process requires. The configuration worksheet is
provided in the Data ONTAP Software Setup Guide for your version of Data ONTAP, which is available on
the IBM®N series support website:
www.ibm.com/storage/support/nseries/
If you are configuring a storage system as part of a high-availability configuration, some information
types must be unique for each storage system mode in the configuration, and some information types
must be identical on both storage system nodes. If you have a high-availability configuration, IBM
recommends that you print and complete two copies of the configuration worksheet, one for each system
node.
About this document
This document provides installation and setup instructions for the IBM System Storage®N7550T and
N7950T gateway storage systems. In this document, the N7550T and N7950T systems with gateway
features are referred to as gateways.

You need to supply the following items to complete the installation:
vEthernet LAN cables
vFibre Channel (FC) cables
vConsole (for example, a PC or notebook)

Important: The installation of N series gateway systems is intended to be performed by IBM-trained
service personnel.

Use these instructions to install and set up your N7x50T series gateway.
Unpacking the N7x50T series gateway
Use these instructions to unpack the N7x50T series gateway.
Each N7x50T series system enclosure ships with an accessories kit and set-up kit bag containing
documentation and hardware parts for installing your system. The quantity of hardware parts is
determined by your system configuration and requirements.
Each shipment container includes the following contents:
vN7x50T series system enclosure
vN7x50T series system bezel
vN7x50T series Installation and Setup Instructions
vElectrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap
vCables required for connections from your system to storage expansion units and for connections
between storage expansion units, if ordered
vGeneral information kit, containing warranty, safety, and environmental information
vSoftware license
>55 kg (121.2 lb)
CAUTION:
The weight of this part or unit is more than 55 kg (121.2 lb). It takes specially
trained persons, a lifting device, or both to safely lift this part or unit. (C011)
1. Remove the foam hardware protectors and the plastic surrounding the system.
2. Remove the storage system using the integrated handles attached to the sides of the storage system,
as shown in Figure 1 on page 2. Place the storage system on a table.

Contents for each N7x50T series model
The following list describes the contents of the shipping packages included with the N7x50T series
model. Each N7x50T series model also ships with at least one envelope with the software End User
License Agreement (EULA) and license keys.
The N7550T 2867-C20 is a single-enclosure high availability (HA) system. The N7550T system unit is
primarily designed as a storage controller for NAS, SAN, and primary storage applications. The unit does
not contain any storage devices (HDDs), but can interface to these devices via Ethernet, SAS or Fibre
Channel, either by itself or as part of a larger network infrastructure. The N7550T 2867-C20 ships with
the following list:
v2 console adapters, RJ-45 to DB-9 (one per controller module)
v8 Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) modules (4 per controller module), provided in the accessory box
or installed in the Fibre Channel ports of the system
v2 cable management arms (one for each controller)
v2 power cords
v2 serial null modem cables (one per controller module)
v1 rear tie-down brackets
v1 IBM rail kits
v1 ESD wrist strap
v1 set of IBM publications

The N7950T 2867-E22 is a dual-enclosure high availability (HA) system. Each enclosure ships in a
separate container, and each enclosure contains one controller module and one Input/Output expansion
module (IOXM). The N7950T 2867-E22 ships with the following list:
v2 console adapters, RJ-45 to DB-9 (one per controller module)
v8 Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) modules (4 per controller module), provided in the accessory box
or installed in the Fibre Channel ports of the system
v4 cable management arms (one for each controller and one for each IOXM)
v4 power cords
v2 serial null modem cables (one per controller module)
v2 HA connection cables (either QSFP-to-QSFP copper cables or QSFP optical transceivers with fiber
cables, depending on your order)
v2 rear tie-down brackets (one per enclosure)
v2 IBM rail kits

Installing the rails in an IBM 19-inch rack
Use these instructions to install the rails on which you will mount the N7x50T series gateway.
Attention: Read these instructions in their entirety before proceeding.
Observe the following rules and restrictions when installing an N series system in a standard IBM 19-inch
(48.26 cm) equipment rack with mounting rails:

DANGER
To avoid hazardous conditions due to uneven mechanical loading, always install the heaviest
devices in the bottom of the rack cabinet. Always install servers and optional devices starting from
the bottom of the rack cabinet. (R001 part 1 of 2)
1. Loosen (but do not remove) the four rail adjustment screws on each rail. See Figure 4.
2. Refer to Figure 5 on page 6. At the front of the rack, position the right-hand rail into the rack at the
appropriate EIA location. Make sure that the two locating pins seat properly. The bottom of the rail
should line up with the bottom EIA boundary.

Note: When installed, each N7x50T series gateway enclosure will occupy a 6U space.
Using two silver pan head M5 screws, attach the rail to the front of the rack using holes H2 and H8.
Tighten these screws with a screwdriver.
3. At the rear of the rack, position the rail at the same EIA location used in step 2. Make sure that the
locating pins seat properly. Using two silver pan head M5 screws, attach the rail to the rack using
holes H2 and H8. Tighten these screws with a screwdriver.
4. Tighten the four rail adjustment screws on the installed rail.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the left-hand rail.
6. Repeat this procedure to install the rails for the second enclosure of an HA pair.

Installing the gateway in the rack
Use these instructions to install the N7x50T series gateway in the rack.
>55 kg (121.2 lb)
CAUTION:
The weight of this part or unit is more than 55 kg (121.2 lb). It takes specially
trained persons, a lifting device, or both to safely lift this part or unit. (C011)
1. If attached, carefully remove the front bezel of the N7x50T series gateway with two hands by
grasping the openings on either side of the bezel.
2. From the front of the rack, place the storage system onto the rails and slide it in until the front
mounting bracket of the storage system is flush with the frame rails of the rack.
3. At the front of the rack, using four silver pan head M5 screws in the H3 and H7 holes, secure the
system unit to the rack by threading the screws through the system unit bracket and the rack frame
rail into the threaded rail nuts. Repeat this for the second rail. Tighten the screws using a screwdriver.
4. Replace the front bezel of the N7x50T series gateway by snapping it back onto the storage system
chassis.
5. From the rear of the rack, use four M5 flat head screws 1 to attach the rear tie-down bracket 2 to
both the left and right rails, as shown in Figure 6. The tie-down bracket should fit over the rear of the
system unit.
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 to install the second enclosure of an HA pair.

Attaching the cable management arms
Using the following instructions, attach a cable management arm to each N7x50T series controller module
and Input/Output expansion module. The cable management arm attachment steps are the same for
either controller or Input/Output expansion modules.
1. As shown in Figure 7, align the cable management arm uprights with the controller or Input/Output
expansion module. Then tilt the cable management arm uprights toward the module.

2. Press on the blue tabs (2 in Figure 7) and gently pinch the cable management arm uprights inward,
aligning the holes in the ends of the arm with the posts in the upper corners of the module.
3. Slide the cable management arm uprights onto the posts on the controller module and then swing the
bottom of the cable management arm to rest on the bottom of the module.
4. Repeat these steps for the remaining cable management arms. Attach a cable management arm to each
N7x50T series controller and Input/Output expansion module.
Installing the power cables
Use these instructions to install the power cables for the N7x50T series gateway.
1. Make sure all power supply switches on the N7x50T series gateway and any attached expansion units
are in the Off position.
2. For all storage systems that are being installed, connect the power cords to all power supply unit
(PSU1 and PSU2) power receptacles using power cord retainer clips as shown below, making sure to
slide the clip all the way forward on the plug.
3. Connect the power cords to the power sources, making sure that the two power supplies are
connected to separate AC sources. This ensures redundant power.
Attention: Do not power on the system at this time.

Note: The N7x50T series storage system has no requirement or provision for grounding.
Connecting the N7x50T series gateway to a network
Use the following information to connect the N7x50T series gateway to a network.
Figure 8 on page 10 identifies the ports on your N7x50T series gateway. Refer to Figure 8 on page 10 for
information about how to connect the gateway to the network. Refer to Figure 9 on page 11 for
information about how to connect the N7x50T series gateway to the network in Clustered Data ONTAP.
Refer to the Gateway Implementation Guide for your storage subsystem and review the following planning
and setup information for information about how to connect and boot your gateway. For details about
how to connect cables to management and cluster switches, see Clustered Data ONTAP Switch Setup and
Configuration Guide.
Note: Use the cable management arms and hook-and-loop fasteners to organize your cabling.
