This document provides installation and setup instructions for the IBM System
Storage N7700 and N7900 gateway systems. Additional information about
these products can be found in the

Installation of gateway systems is intended to be performed by IBM-trained
service personnel.

on the model you purchased. See Step 1.1 for a
list of contents for specific models.

modules will either be in the accessory box or
will be installed on the fiber ports of the gateway
system.

2.1 Loosen (but do not remove) the four rai-adjustment screws on each rail.

2.2 Use the figure on the next page for reference. At the front of the rack,
position the right-hand rail into the rack at the appropriate EIA location
(make sure that the two locating pins seat properly). The bottom of the
rail should line up with the bottom EIA boundary.
When installed, each N7700/N7900 unit will occupy a 6U space.
Using two silver pan-head M5 screws, attach the rail to the front of the
rack using holes H2 and H8. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
Note:
2.3 At the rear of the rack, position the rail at the same EIA location used in
step 2.2 (make sure that the locating pins seat properly). Using two silver
pan-head M5 screws,

2.5 Repeat steps 2.2 through 2.4 for the left-hand rail.
2.6 Repeat steps 2.1 through 2.5 if you are installing a second N7700/N7900.

3.1 Remove the foam hardware protectors and the plastic surrounding the
system unit.

3.2 Carefully remove the front bezel of the N7700/N7900 gateway by pulling
out on the semi-circular openings on either side of the bezel.
Caution: The weight of this part or unit is between 32 and 55 kg (70.5
and 121.2 lb). It takes three persons to safely lift this part or unit.

3.3 Remove the five fan modules from the front of the system unit by performing
the following steps:
1. Loosen the thumbscrew on the fan module handle.
2. Press the release tab of the fan module handle, and then pull
the handle toward you to remove the fan from the chassis. Make
sure that you support the fan with your free hand. After removing
each fan place it on a table or other safe place.
3.4 Remove the two power supplies from the rear of the system unit by
performing the following steps:
1. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the power supply.
2. Lower the cam handle and slide the power supply out of the
chassis. Make sure that you support the power supply with
your free hand. After removing each power supply place it on a
table or other safe place.

3.6 At the front of the rack, using four black hex-head M5 screws in the H3
and H7 holes, secure the system unit to the rack by threading the screws
through the system unit bracket and the rack frame rail into the threaded
rail nuts. Tighten the screws using the 7mm nut driver. Refer to the figure
below step 2.6 on page 6.
3.9 Replace the front bezel of the N7700/N7900 gateway by snapping it
back onto the system unit chassis.
3.5 The system unit is installed from the front of the rack. Position the pallet
near the front of the rack. Lift the system unit using the handles on the
chassis and place the system unit onto the rails. Then slide it into the rack
until the front mounting bracket of the system unit is flush with the frame
rails of the rack.
3.7 Replace the two power supplies at the rear of the gateway system unit by
performing the following steps:
1. Align the edges of the power supply with the opening in the
system chassis and gently push the power supply into the
chassis until the cam handle begins to rise.
2. Push the cam handle to the closed position.
3. Tighten the two thumbscrews on the power supply.
Replace the five fan modules at the front of the system unit by performing
the following steps:
1. Align the fan with the fan opening in the chassis, and gently
slide it into the chassis as far as it can go.
The fan modules are keyed and can only be installed one
way. If the fan module does not fit properly, flip the module 180
degrees and reinstall it.
2. Finish seating the fan by pushing firmly on the edges of the
fan housing. When properly seated, the locking tab engages
the handle.
3. Tighten the thumbscrew on the handle.
Note:
The upper two fan modules are installed
with the handles at the bottom, and the lower three fan modules
are installed rotated 180 degrees, with the handles at the top.

3.10 From the rear of the rack, attach the rear tie down bracket in the
orientation shown to the rails using four M5 flat-head screws. The tie
down bracket should be over the rear of the system unit.

4Installing the cabling hardware
4.1 Verify that SFPs are installed and firmly seated in Fibre Channel ports 0a
through 0h.
4.3 If you are installing a model A11, go to step 6 on page 13.
If you are installing a model A21, go to step 5 on page 12.

Install your cable management tray by inserting one arm into the chassis
as shown. Then press the other arm towards the center of the chassis
and insert it in the slot so that it locks into place.

5.1 To cable the cluster adapters, complete the following steps, using the
diagram for reference. NVRAM6 adapters, which also function as the
cluster interconnect adapters, must be installed in slot 1 of each gateway
node.
Cluster cables can be either fiber or copper. If you are using fiber
cables, a copper-fiber converter must be plugged into the NVRAM6
adapter before attaching a fiber cluster cable.
The cable management arm must be used to support the cluster
cables. If left unsupported, the adapter connectors can be damaged by
the cable weight.
5.1.1 Plug one end of the cluster cable into one of gateway 1's
cluster adapter ports. Then plug the other end into gateway 2's
corresponding cluster adapter port.
You must not cross-cable the cluster-interconnect
adapter. Cable the gateway1 ports only to the identical ports on
the gateway 2 node.
5.1.2 Repeat step 5.1.1 for the remaining port on the cluster adapter.
5.1.3 Gently pull on the cable ends to ensure that they are properly
seated.
5.1.4 Go to Step 6 on page 13.

6.1 Make sure all power supply switches on the N7700/N7900(s) and any
attached expansion units(s) are in the Off position.
