Icom IC-718 'Quickstart' Manual

Of course, at the start of an incident, we will use
conventional handwritten messaging. For this, we
use the FT-8800 dual band VHF/ HF transceiver
However, there may be a need for longer distance
communications. We supply this with the Icom
IC-718 HF Transceiver

Power up the station
- Remove front and back covers, set aside
- Verify HF transceiver is connected to a HF antenna
- Verify AC power plug is plugged into a power source
- Turn on power master
switch (back of unit)
- Turn on 12vdc power
supply

Turn on the Transceiver
- Turn on, tune the HF Transceiver ( details next slide )

Turn on Transceiver
-Press and hold 'Pwr” button (2 sec)
You have no way to know what changes may have been made and
left on the IC-718 the last time it is used.
Therefore it is important to check both the 'Quick et' and ' ettings'
[ Quick Press ] POWER button to turn on the transceiver
- Adjust volume and squelch to taste.
Assumes channel is pre programmed in memory. If not, see reference
manual
Avoid errors, accept no interruptions when performing these checklists

Verify 'Quick et' Menus
[ Quick Press ] POWER button to turn on the transceiver
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate menus
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust a setting within a menu

'Quick et' - RF Power
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
Use the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'RF power'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust power to anyone of 99
levels or H for the default, full power.

'Quick et' - Mic gain
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Mic gain'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Mic gain to anyone of 99
levels or H. Default, is 50. Adjust to suit your voice

'Quick et' - Vox gain
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Vox gain'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Vox gain to anyone of 99
levels or H. Default, is 50. Adjust to suit your voice

'Quick et' - Vox delay
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
Use the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Vox delay'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust Vox delay to any delay
between 0 and 2 seconds in 0.1 increments

'Quick et' - Anti Vox level
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Anti Vox level'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust 'Anti Vox level' to any of
100 increments. Default is 50.

'Quick et' - Dimmer
[ Press & Hold ] 1sec, [ ET ] button to enter 'Quick et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to 'Dimmer'
Rotate main tuning knob to adjust 'Dimmer' to one of Off,
Low, High. The default is HI (High).

Quick et & then, Initial et mode
There are two 'Set' modes in the IC-718 transceiver.
Previous slides have dealt with the 'Q ick Set' mode but we must
also realize that the 'Initial Set' Mode may have been changed.
The next slides offers a checklist for the 'Initial Set' mode.

Enter 'Initial et' mode
[ Press & Hold ] , [ SET ] button and [ Press & Hold ] [ Pwr ]
to enter 'Initial et' mode
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate
the options
Rotating the main tuning knob will select a setting with any
single option.
To exit, [ Press & Hold ] 1 sec, [ Pwr ] to Off

'Initial Set' mode – RF/ QL p.20
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate
to RF/ QL
Rotating the main tuning knob for one of:
rS = optimizes rf & squelch settings
At = use for best AM mode quality
Sq = ets squelch level only
Default is 'rS'

'Initial Set' mode – Beep p. 44
One uses the [ Up ] & [ Dwn ] Buttons to navigate to navigate
to Beep
Rotating the main tuning knob for Off or On
ome operators do not like a 'beep' sounding each time they
touch a button so it can be toggled On or Off
Default is 'On'
