Shields®Avoidance Training Guide for your Pet Keeper
Dear Canine Company Client,
Before you begin training:
• Read through all of the appropriate manuals.
• Set up your avoidance system and make all necessary adjustments before you place the Computer
Collar®unit on your pet.
• You will be able to train your pet to the Pet Keeper whether your pet is new to the Invisible Fence®
Brand system or they have been trained to a system before.
• The Avoidance Flags included act as a visual during the training process. While they are important
during the training process, they are temporary and may be removed once your pet is fully trained,
generally in 2 weeks.
• Once you have properly set up your indoor Shields®unit, you will need to place the avoidance flags no
more than 1 foot from where your pet’s Computer Collar®unit begins to make an audible tone. You may
need to make adjustments to your Shields®unit to properly match placement of the Avoidance Flags by
adjusting radius or location.
• Please contact us ay anytime if you need assistance training your pet.
• At any time you may purchase training to be performed by a certified Canine Company representative.
For pets trained to the Invisible Fence®Brand system
Use Invisible Fence®Brand training flags to mark the outside of the signal field range. This gives your pet a
visual marker, similar to how they learned the signal field range of the outdoor pet containment system. Do
not start over from the beginning, the behavior is there and you just have to introduce the new boundaries.
Allow your pet to see the flags and hear the tone from the Computer Collar®unit. Don’t over emphasize, just
let them know it is there. To allow your pet to hear the tone, remove the Computer Collar®unit from your pet
and let the collar activate so your pet can hear the tone. By already being familiar with the training flags and
the warning beep, your pet should react immediately by moving away from the protected area. Place the
collar back on your pet and allow your pet to move around the safe area. If your dog approaches the flagged
area, allow them to enter and to retreat back into the safe area. It may take several times for your pet to
recognize and avoid the protected area. Praise your pet for leaving the protected area. Remember to set your
pets up to succeed, this means allow for plenty of fun time in the safe area and not overdoing a training session.
For pets new to the Invisible Fence®Brand system
Use Invisible Fence®Brand avoidance training flags to mark the edge of the signal field range. This gives
your pet a visual marker. Use Invisible Fence®Brand correction post covers, on the Computer Collar®Unit
for the first training session. This will introduce your pet to the idea of leaving the protected area when he/she
hears the warning beep. Attach a long lead to your pet's buckle collar strap and show your pet how to avoid
the protected area by gently guiding the pet out of the range when the warning beep sounds.
Notice: Do not attach a lead to the Computer Collar®unit strap. This can result in pulling the posts
too tightly against your pet's neck. Attach a lead to a separate, non-metallic collar or harness, making
sure the extra collar strap does not put pressure on the posts.

ing their house as they do, there are usually areas of the home they would prefer to keep their pet away from.
The Pet Keeper Shields®Avoidance System is designed to keep your pet out of or away from designated
areas of your home, including:

• Living Rooms or other rooms in the house
• Indoors Only
Your Pet Keeper Shields®Avoidance System is easy to set up, easy to train and is able to handle future
additional applications if you need them.

Training your pet to your Pet Keeper Invisible Fence®Brand Shields®Avoidance System

Praise your pet for leaving the protected area. Repeat this process until your pet reacts to the warning beep
on their own by moving away from the protected area. Remove the post covers on the Computer Collar®
unit. Allow your pet to enter the protected area. Your pet should react immediately to the warning beep and
correction by moving away from the protected area. It may take several times for your pet to recognize and
avoid the protected area.
After training is complete, remove your pet's Computer Collar®unit each night to prevent irritation. However,
if this is not possible, please check the tightness of the collar each time you feed your pet by removing the
collar and then replacing it back on your pet. Remember to set your pet up to succeed, allow them plenty of
fun time in the safe area and do not overdo a training session.
Maintenance for your Pet Keeper Invisible Fence®Brand Shields®Avoidance System
Shields®Indoor Avoidance Systems need very little maintenance. Your Indoor Shields®unit will need to be
charged about every 30 days. Consult the appropriate manual on our website:
www.caninecompany.com/manualsvideos.aspx for other charging information.
NOTE: Remove your pets Computer Collar®unit any time you change the Shields®zone range so it
doesn’t accidently activate the audible tone and deterrent correction.
On average, the PowerCap®battery in your Computer Collar®unit should be changed every 3 months. Low
temperatures, the number of times the pet challenges the avoidance zone, and improper collar fit can all

Shields®Avoidance Training Guide for your Pet Keeper
NOTE: Do not place your Computer Collar®unit on your pet until you have properly set up the
Shields®unit and have read the appropriate manual on our website:
www.caninecompany.com/manualsvideos.aspx. It is important that your pet’s collar is properly fitted
and the training is completed.
NOTE: Every day you should make time to check the fit of the collar on your pet. Your pet’s coat or
weight will change over time, thereby affecting the fit of the collar. Please remove the collar daily and
make sizing adjustments as needed. A collar that is too tight or left on for any extended period of time
may produce a rubbing or an irritation, which may lead to infection if not properly treated.
NOTE: Included in your Pet Keeper Shields®Avoidance System is a Shields®Computer Collar®unit
that has already been pre-programmed to an appropriate avoidance level. Every pet is different and
please contact us if you need help training your pet.
NOTE: Your Pet Keeper Shields®Avoidance System is designed for INDOOR APPLICATIONS ONLY.
At no time, should you use the Computer Collar®unit to keep your pet contained outside or use the
Shields®units outdoors. If you are interested in keeping your pet contained outdoors, please contact
