1. INTRODUCTION
KAM®MoistureAnalyzersincorporatethecoulometryprincipleappliedtoKarlFischertitrationtototally
eliminatethetroublesomeproceduresinvolvedinconventionalwaterdeterminations.Availableinalab
modelaswellasaportable,KAM®MoistureAnalyzersareeasytouseandfullyautomatic.Theportable
modelhasaruggedcaseforeldusageandthecapabilitytooperatecontinuouslyfor10hoursonbattery
powerbeforeneedingrecharging.
KAM®KFunitscanbeusedtorapidlyandaccuratelydeterminethewatercontentofliquidhydrocarbons
forallcustodytransferoperations:pipeline,marine,ortruck.TheMoistureAnalyzercanalsobeusedto
analyzecrudeoils,distillates,transformeroils,jetfuels,chemicals,andmostotherliquids.Intheplant,it
canmonitorthemoisturecontentofstreamsduringstart-ups,shutdowns,upsets,andnormaloperations.
Thiscanbeespeciallyimportantonunitswhereexpensivecatalystscanbedamagedbyexcessivemois-
ture.Theunitalsocanbeusedbymachinistsaspartofapreventivemaintenanceprogram.Byanalyzing
lubeoiloncompressors,turbines,etc.,theMoistureAnalyzercandetectcoolingwaterleaksbeforethey
becomesevereenoughtodamageequipment.
KarlFischertitrimetryisanaccuratemoisturemeasurementmethodutilizingthequantitativereactionof
waterwithiodine.IncoulometricKarlFischertitration,thesampleisaddedtotheKarlFischerReagent(io-
dineionandsulfurdioxideasprincipalcomponents).Iodine,generatedelectrolyticallyattheanode,reacts
withwaterinthesampleasshowninFormula1.Iodineisgeneratedindirectproportiontothequantityof
electricityaccordingtoFaraday’sLaw.

Onemoleofiodinereactsquantitativelytoonemoleofwater;therefore,1mgofwaterisequivalentto
10.71coulombs(Formula2).Basedonthisprinciple,watercontentcanbedirectlydeterminedfromthe
quantityofelectricityrequiredforelectrolysis.ThiseliminatestheneedforadditionofReagentandtedious
standardizationprocedures.

Glasswareshouldbeassembledanddisassembledseparately
priortoinstallationontheunitbase.Thispreventsthepossibility
ofspillingreagentsonthebaseelectronics.
Ifassemblinganewunit,removetheSilicaGelfrom
packagingandpourintotheDryingTube(A),orverifythatthe
existingSilicaGelinsidetheDryingTubeisblue.Ifnot,replace.
InsertDryingTubeAssemblyintothesmallestopeningofthe
GeneratorSolutionCelllid(B).
UnscrewInjectionPort(D and E)andplaceanewrubberSep-
tum (C)inthebaseoftheInjectionPort(D).Screwthetopof
theInjectionPort(E)intothebaseandplacetheInjectionPort
intotheindicatedopeningontheGeneratorSolutionCelllid(B).
ApplyathinlayerofSpecialGreasetotheneckofDetector
Electrode(F)andplaceintheremainingsmallopeningofthe
GeneratorSolutionCelllid(B).Donotapplypressuretothe
Electrode.Rather,letitseatunderitsownweight.Rotateithalf
aturnbackwardandforwardtoensurethegreaseisspread
evenlyandasealhasbeencreated.
DroptheceramicStirBar(J)intotheGeneratorSolutionCell.
ApplyathinlayerofSpecialGreasetotheneckof
CathodeSolutionCell(G) and its Stopper (H). Set aside.
PourentirecontentsofKAMGeneratorSolutionA(100ml)
intotheGeneratorSolutionCellthroughtheremaininghole
(shouldbethelargeholenearthecenterofthelid).The
GeneratorSolutionA(100ml)ispre-measuredtothe
appropriate volume.
PlacetheCathodeSolutionCell(G)intointheGenerator
Solution Cell lid (B).Donotapplypressure.Itwillseatunderits
ownweight.Rotateithalfaturnbackwardandforwardto
ensurethegreaseisdistributedevenlyaroundthecircumfer-
enceoftheseal.Thesoonertheholeiscovered,thelessmois-
turewillbeabsorbedbythechemicals.

TurnofftheKAM®KF unit.
Pressthepowerbuttononthesideoftheprintertwotimesinquicksuccession.
Theprinterwillshutdown.
Waituntilthebluelightontheprinterstopsblinkingandturnsoff.Then,pressthepower

keepallpartsmountedtopreventmoistureabsorptioninthereagents.Ifthecellisleftstand-
ingwiththedryingtuberemoved,theceramicfritontheCathodeSolutionCellwillabsorb
moisture.
Forstorage/nousageforover1week,theunitneedstobedisassembledandallglassneeds
tobecleanedwithsoapandhotwater,rinsed,anddried.Leavingthereagentsinforan
extendedperiodoftimecanleadtocrystallization.
TokeeptheGeneratorSolutionCellperformingaccuratelyandeffectivelybesurethatathin
layerofSpecialGreaseisappliedtoallglasstaperedjointseachtimetheReagentsare
replaced.Frequentgreasingwillpreventtheglasswarefromseizingandcausingdamageto
thecell.TheSpecialGreasedoesnotabsorbmoisture,soitwillnothindertheresultsofthe
analysis.
NOTE:NoothergreaseshouldbeusedwithaKAM®KFKarlFischerMoistureAnalyzerdue
tothepotentialfortheothertypesofgreasetoabsorbmoistureandinterferewithtitrationif
itissiliconbased.KAMCONTROLSisnotresponsibleforproblemsresultingfromtheuseof
impropergrease.

Dirtyelectrodes(platinumgrids)usuallyresultinthefollowingproblems:
•Adecreaseintitrationefciencyresultinginalongermeasuringtime
•Anincreaseintheblank(residual)valueoftitrationcurrentduetoabsorptionofmoisture
inthedirtyarea
•Unstabletitrationcurrentandlackofreproducibleresults
•StainingontheceramicfritatthebottomoftheCathodeSolutionCell
NOTE:KAM®recommendstheuseofchromicsulfuricacid(3mlofpotassiumdichro-
mate+400mlofreagentgradesulfuricacid).Becausenitricacidproducescorrosivefumes,be
sureandconductallpartsofthisprocedureinanappropriatelyventilatedenvironment.
AcidshouldNOTbereused.Followappropriatedisposalprocedures.
KAM®performsthisserviceasapartofannualunitrecerticationandhighlyrecommendsend
userssendunittofactoryforelectrodecleaningifasuitableenvironmentand/orchemicalsare
not available.

RemoveanyexteriorcontaminationfromCathodeSolutionCellwithtissuepaperand
acetonebeingcarefulnottodamagetheplatinumwiresandscreenontheoutsideofthe
cell.
FilltheCathodeCellwithacetoneandstoppertheinletjoint.Shaketheunituntilanydirt
isremoved.Thisshouldberepeatedseveraltimes.Pouroutanddiscardacetone.
Washtheoutersurfacewithacetone.
Pourapproximately5mlofacidintotheCathodeSolutionCell.
Placethecellina50mlbeakerandllthebeakerwithacidtothesamelevelasisinthe
cell.SecuretheCathodeSolutionCellsothatitwillnotfallover.Allowthecelltoremain
inthesolutionovernight.
Afterthecellhasstoodovernight,discardthenitricacidinthecell,andrinsetheinside
andoutsideofthecellwithrunningtapwateruntiltheyellowcolordisappears.
Placedistilledwaterinthecellandplaceitina400mlbeakerledwithdistilledwater.
Placethebeakeronahotplateandbringthewatertoaslowboilforatleastonehour.
Repeatthisoperationuntilthereisnocolorationofthewater.
RemovetheCathodeSolutionCellfromthewaterandllitwithacetonetooverowing,
oodingtheoutsideofthecellaswell.Shakethecell,dumpouttheacetone,thenrell
and repeat.
Drythecellwithaforcedairdryer.
NOTE:Donotusecompressedairastheincreasedpressurecoulddamagethecompo-
nents.
Placetheentireassemblyinalaboratoryovenandcontinuetodryitforseveralhoursat
120ºF.
