After the provisional installation of the sensors, connect the trans-
mitter to a power source. You can then enter the parameters into
the Setup Wizard to prepare the flow meter for measurement.
Step 3: Quick Start Menu and Setup Wizard
Upon first power on and the
boot-up sequence, the main
menu is displayed. Use <UP>
and <DOWN> cursor keys to
select Quick start. Confirm by
pressing <ENTER>.
On subsequent restoration of power the flow meter will be in
measurement mode. Press <ESC> to return to the main menu.
●Avoid installation of sensors in the vicinity of deformations and
pipe defects, near welding seams or where deposits could have
accumulated.
●Select a measuring point with sufficient straight pipe to obtain
accurate measurements, generally a length of ten times the
pipe diameter on the inlet of the measuring point, and a five
times pipe diameter on the outlet.
●For a horizontal pipe, mount the sensors on the side of the
pipe. For a vertical pipe, mount the sensors at a location where
the liquid flows upwards. (Pic 1)
●Mount the sensors in the direction of the flow. (Pic 2)
●Clean the pipe at the measuring point. Remove loose paint and
rust with a wire brush or file.
●Apply coupling paste to the bottom of the clamp-on sensors
before installation. Leave straps slightly loose so sensors can
be moved along the pipe during the positioning process.

Step 3: Quick Start Function and Setup Wizard (Continued)
Select pipe lining material using
cursor keys.
Confirm by pressing <ENTER>.
Select transducer configuration
(number of passes) using cursor
keys.
Auto: Automatic selection by
meter according to the entered
parameters (number of passes
shown at later stage on Sensor
Positioning Screen).
1: 1 pass, diagonal mode
2: 2 passes, reflection mode
3: 3 passes, diagonal mode
4: 4 passes, reflection mode
5: 5 passes, diagonal mode
6: 6 passes, reflection mode
..etc.
Confirm by pressing <ENTER>.
1. Reflection Mode
The flow meter uses an even number of passes. This is the most
convenient mounting arrangement, as the transducer separation
distance can be measured very easily and the sensors can be
accurately aligned. Use whenever possible. (Pic 3)
2. Diagonal Mode
The signal travels on an odd number of passes through the pipe.
Used for larger pipes where greater signal attenuation might
occur. The sensor distance on this mounting configuration can be
negative (sensors overlapping). (Pic 4)
Pic 3: Reflection mode Pic 4: Diagonal mode
Use cursor keys to select Start
Measurement.
Confirm by pressing <ENTER>.
If Setup Wizard Dual has been chosen, parameter entry for
channel 2 will start after the selection of the number of passes for
channel 1. The respective channel number is indicated on each
screen at the top left corner.
Sensor Positioning Screen
Mount the transducers with the
suggested spacing. This has
been determined by the flow
meter on basis of to the entered
parameters.
The suggested sensor spacing
is the distance from the inside
edge of each sensor.
Use the middle line between the
signal indication bars for the fine
adjustment of the sensor moun-
ting position. A central position
of this line is desired.
If the line between the bars is to
the left-hand side of the lower
middle line, the sensors are too
close to each other. If the line
between the bars is to the right,
the sensors are too far apart.
Observe the upper bar (signal-
to-noise ratio) and lower bar
(signal quality). These should be
of identical length and as far to
the right as possible.
Confirm by pressing <ENTER>
to obtain measurements.
The flow totaliser can be started
or reset by pressing <Q
ON
>. The
totalisers can be stopped with
<Q
OFF
>.
Switch between flow rate and
totaliser without resetting by
pressing <NEXT>.
Press <DISP> in order to switch
between the selected process
value and the diagnostic screen.
The main process value can be
changed in the Quick Start or
Output section (Output-Display-
Units). Press <ESC> to return to
the main menu. Change to the
diagnostic display by pressing
<DISP>. Cycle through available
flow channels using <MUX>.
Process Value Display, Totaliser and Datalogger
The Datalogger function is selected from the main menu. Enable
it by entering a non-zero value (1 s to 999 s) for the interval. The
active process values will be logged when in measurement
mode.
Setting an interval value of zero stops the data logger and retains
measured data. The changing from an interval of zero to a non-
zero value will clear the logger. Ensure that any required data is
downloaded before doing this. Changing between two non-zero
intervals does not clear the logger.
An activated datalogger is indicated by a flashing document icon
at the top left corner of the measurement screen. Measurement
sessions are recorded separately.

KATflow 150 Quick Start Manual
RS 485 Serial Interface
The RS 485 interface is used for connecting up to 32 flow meters
to a computer system. The communication protocol used
conforms to the conventions of the Modbus RTU protocol. Please
refer to customer support for further information. The ASCII
printer output can also be transmitted through the RS 485
interface.
Analogue Current Output 0/4 ... 20 mA
The analogue current outputs operate in a 4 ... 20 mA or 0 ... 20
mA span. Current outputs may be assigned to process values in
the “mode” section of the output menu. The current outputs can
be programmed and scaled within the menu structure.
Digital Open-Collector Output
Open-Collector output 1 is assigned to the totalizer function of
channel 1 which is related to the selected process value. Open-
Collector output 2 is assigned in the same way to channel 2 (on a
two-channel system).
Digital Relay Output
Relay outputs may be assigned to process values in the “mode”
section of the output menu. The relay outputs are configured
using the menu structure.
Heat Quantity Measurement (HQM), optional
Where equipped, heat quantity (energy) and heat flow (energy
flow) can be measured on Channel 1 of the flow meter.
If a heat quantity unit is specified for the process value, the
KATflow 150 will prompt the user for the specific heat capacity of
the medium in J/g/K (for example 4.18 J/g/K for water).
The Setup Wizard will then allow the user to select the tem-
perature input source; either PT100 temperature sensors or a
fixed value for measurement against a known inlet or outlet
temperature. Where PT100 sensors are selected, the Wizard will
prompt the user for a temperature offset, which may be useful
where the temperature of the medium differs from the tem-
perature of the pipe wall (for example with unlagged pipes). If a
fixed value is selected, the Wizard will ask the user to specify this
value. The Wizard will then proceed with the installation
parameters as in step 3.
When heat quantity units are selected, these behave as any
other Process Value and may be totalized, logged, or applied to a
Process Output.
Connection of PT100 Sensors and Installation to Pipe
For heat quantity measurements a set of flow sensors connected
to channel no. 1 may be installed on a suitable pipe section along
with two PT100 temperature sensors which are mounted to the
pipe at the inlet and outlet of the chosen location.
Katronic Technologies Ltd I 23 Cross St I Leamington Spa I UK I Ph. +44(0)1926 882954 I [email protected] I www.katronic.co.uk
The PT100 sensors are installed
with the flat side of the sensor
facing the pipe surface. The
sensors can be held in place
using the supplied chains and
springs (Pic 5). Alternatively,
cable straps can be used.
Where no lagging is present, it is
recommended that the PT100
sensors are insulated to obtain
more accurate measurements.
