1. OUTLINE
The PWR series CV/CC powersupplyunitsarethefirstintheir
class with built-in microcomputers,makingtheirmulti-
functionalcapabilitiessecondtononeinthemarket.Theirdual
tracking function ishelpingthe series achievethehighestof
reliability.Moreover,thier multi-output isearningthema
several-fold leadoverconventionalsingle-outputpower sup-
plyunits,makingthePWR series mostidealfor research and
as papowersourceforvarious systems. ThePWR series is
also compatible with GP-IB, at time ofsystemconnection,
Master Control,andvariousotherremotecontrol.ThePWR
series fully satisfies thecurrentdemandfora powerfuland
multi-functional powersupply unit forautomaticmeasurement
systems andsimulation tests.

Guidelines onInstructionManualUsage
The PWR series instructionmanualcomesIntwo sets,
oneforthepowersupplyandtheotherforremote
control.
This Instructionmanualisfortheformer. Refer tothe
othermanualforremote control operation.

2. FEATURES
* Dualtrackingfunctionmode: Enables output voltageand
current(negativeandpositive)tobechangedatthe same
rate and same time.
* Seven-segment LED displayfunction (red): Enables voltage
and current digital values tobedisplayedatthe same time.
This functionallowsthe user to easily viewtheactual out-
putvoltageandcurrent levels andthe values previouslyset.
* Preset function:Allowsthe user topresetuptothreepairs
ofvoltageandcurrentmostfrequently used. This enables
thequicktargetselection.
*
Excellent man-machineinterface:One-touchkeyswitches
providedforsettingoperationalconditions.Allthevariables
can beentered through the"one-dialcontrol"oftherotary
encoder. Inaddition,thedesired output voltageandcurrent
values canbespecifiedpreciselyin10mVand10mA unit.
* Keylockfunction: Forces allthe values previouslysetto
be fixed. This preventsthecurrent values from beingaltered
bysomeone else whilethe user is "out".
* Protectfunction: Prevents unexpectedvoltageandcurrent
from being output toanexternalapplicationboard. This
functionishelpfulwhenthepresetkey,variablekey,and
trackingkeyarepressedinthe output operationmode.
* Safety mechanismdesign:Well-designedheatsinkprovid-
ed forpreventingintra-unittemperature from becominghigh
toomuch.Nofanisusedforcooling.Asa result,theinter-
nal functionalblocksarenotdegradeddueto noises, vibra-
tion anddust.
* Backupfunction:Allowsthe values previouslysettobekept
intheback-upmemory.Thatis,evenif theregulatedpower
supplies areturnedoff,thecurrent values are saved tothe
. back-upmemory. There isnoneedforthe user toenterdata
each timewhenthesystemisturnedon.
* Apart from thefeaturesdescribedsofar,thePWRhas
anotherspecialfeaturewhichisthecapabilitytocontrol
each functionbyremotecontrol.

4. PRECAUTIONS FORUSE
Keep inmindthe following whenreadingthismanual:
The manualcovers both thePWR18-2and PWR36-I
models.
However, from Chapter5,"Explanation,ofPanelfront"
onwards,, themanualis written onlyintermsofthe
PWR 18-2.
Whencheckingregardingthe PWR36-1, "18V"should
bechangedto"36V"whereveritappearsafter Chap-
ter5.
1)confirmingthesupplyvoltage
*Usethe unit within thespecifiedrange.
The unit'sratedvoltageissingle-phase,100/120/220/240
• V AC±10%(max.250V)at50/60Hz.
*Theratedvoltageis written onthenameplatelocatedun-
dertheAC input terminalontherearpanel.
*•.See-theMaintenanceandAdjustmentsection:'forinforma-
tion onhowtochangethesupplyvoltage.

Be usertoplugtheprovidedpowercorddeeplyandfirmly into
theAC input terminal.
3)Precautionsforconnectionofoutputterminals
* Because thisisa dual output machinethatputsoutposi-
tive/negativevoltagesandcurrents,donotusetheprovid-
edshoringbarorotherdevicetoshorttheCMterminal with
thepositiveandnegativeterminals,orthepositiveand
negativeterminals with eachother.Ifa shortismade,use
themachineaftersettingthe output voltagetorathera low
level. Ifitishigh,theinternalcircuitsmaybedamaged. Keep
itinmind.
* This isa floating typepowersupply.Fornormaluse,the
providedshortingbartoconnecttheGNDandCOMtermi-
nals. Inaddition,whenconnectingtheshortbarbetween
theCOMandGNDterminals,orwhenremovingit,besure
toputthe OUTPUT switchto "OFF".
4)Set-upEnvironment
*Besuretousethemachine within thespecifiedambienttem-
peraturerangeof0 to40degC.
* Because the unit iscooledbynaturalconvection,donot
place objectsontop,placethe unit underanyheat-emitting
device, oruse multiple unitsinstackedconfiguration.Ad-
dition,placethe unit inaswellventilateda placeaspossible.
*Duringuse,theheatsinkintherearpanelmaygethot.En-
sure good ventilationanddonotplaceheat-susceptibleob-
jects nearby.
5)Remarksregardingturningonthepowersupply
*NodataisdisplayedonthedisplaypanelandtheLEDdis-
playremainsinactiveforaboutthreesecondsafterthis sys-
temisturnedon.Notethatthesystemisnotoperating
abnormally.Wait until somedataisdisplayedonthedis-
playpanel.

Inthe case ofnormalswitch-onwhenthebackupcondenser
is chargingthevoltageandcurrentsdisplayedwillallbe"0"
(See Figure1-a). Then, after5 seconds,normaloperation
willbegin.
Because the unit uses a condenserasthememorysetback-
uppowersupply,whenfirst turning thepowersupplyon,
orwhen turning itonforthefirsttimeina longtime(more
than1 week),allofthevoltagedisplaywillread"0"(See
Figure 1-a). This isnota malfunction,pleasedwait.While
themachineisinthisstate,allcontrolswitcheswillbenon-
functional.
Ifthesystemisturnedoffwhilethedata'0000'isdisplayed
onthedisplaypanel,thecontentofthebackupmemorymay
bedestroyed.Itmay cause anerror.Keepitinmind.Ifthe
system isturnedoffduetooperationalerrorsorsomeother
unavoidableerrors(forexample,powerfailure),performthe
operationsdiscussedinNote2 onpage18.Thesystemwill
beinitialized.

5. PANEL EXPLANATION

This isthepowerswitch.Thepoweristurnedonwhenthis
switch is pressed. Thepoweristurnedoffwhenthisswitch
is pressedagain.
Nothing isdisplayedonthepanelforapproximatelythree
seconds afterthepoweristurnedon.
©Voltmeter
This indicatesthepositive(+) andnegative(-)setting
values forthevoltageandthe output voltage.
The last-digital data may not be stable due to display
resolution. However, the output, does not fluctuate.
*Ifa reversevoltageisgenerated0.00V isdisplayedand
thedisplay flashes.
©Ammeter
This indicatesthe output currentvalueandthesettingvalue
ofthepositive(+ ) andnegative(-) output current.
@ Rotary Encoder Knob(forsettingvoltageandcurrentvalues)
A rotaryencoderknobisusedtospecifythe output voltages
and the output current limit values(negativeandpositive).
IftheV LED © isturned'onthevoltagevaluedisplayedby
thevoltmeter@ canbechangedbyusingthisrotary
encoder.
IftheA LED © isturnedon,thecurrent limit valuedislayed
bytheAmmeter© canbechanged with thisrotaryencoder.
The valuesdisplayedonthevoltmeterandtheammeterwill

Press thiskeyandsetthevalue with therotaryencoder©
tosetthe output voltageorthepositive(+)current limit
value.
Ifthe output isoverloaded(Constantcurrentoperation),the
OVERLOAD (+18V) LED flashestoindicatea malfunction

This key sets the output voltageorthenegative(-)cur-
rent limit valueandtheLEDindicateswhenthissettingis
possible.
The negative output voltageandcurrentvalueorthe set-
ting valuearedisplayedandthe-18VLEDlightswhen
thiskeyis pressed.
Press thiskeyandsetthevalue with theV-Avaluesetting
knob@ toset output voltageorthenegative(-)current
limit value.
Ifthe output isoverloaded(Constantcurrentoperation),the
OVERLOAD (- 18V) LED flashestoindicatea malfunction
warning.
The LEDgoesoffwhenthe- 18Vkeyispressedagain.
® TRACKING Key/ TRACKINGLED(Red)
This key sets the output (thepositiveandnegativevoltage
and currentvaluestothesamevalue)inthetrackingmode.
The LEDlightstoindicatethatthismodeisset.
When thiskeyis pressed, thesettingvaluesofthepositive
(+)andnegative(-) output voltageandcurrent limit are
set tothesameabsolutevalueandthe TRACKING LED
lights.
The currentlyindicatedvalue(selectedbyeitherthe+ 18V
key © orthe-18Vkey®)has priority forthetrackingvalue
and the output valuethat.isnotdisplayedissettocor-
respondtothisvalue.
When thiskeyispressedagain,theLEDgoesoffandthe
trackingstatusis canceled. Thesettingvalueremainsatthe
same valueaswhenthetrackingisperformedandisnot
reset totheoriginalvalue.

This key varies the output settingvalueandtheLEDlights
when thisoperationispossible.
Press thiskeytochangethe output settingvalue.TheLED
lightstoindicatethatthe output settingvaluecanbe
changed.
. Press the OUTPUT key© and turn therotaryencoder©
tochangethe output setting.
Since thesignal from thiskeyisinternallyandlogicallylinked
with those from the PRESET and MEMORY keys, the VARI-
ABLE LEDgoesoffandthe output settingvaluecannotbe
changed ifeitheroneofthepreset keys isselectedorthe
MEMORY key© is pressed.
This keycanalsobeusedtocontroltheadjustmentspeed
when changingthevoltageviatherotaryencoder.When
themachineisinthe VARIABLE modeandthegreenLED
is litup,thevariationspeedissetto "SLOW." Ifthekey
is pressedoncemore,theorange LED lightsupandthevar-
iationspeedswitches to-"FAST." Ifthekeyispressedyet
again, thegreenLEDlightsagainandthevariationspeed
reverts to "SLOW".

The MEMORY functionisusedtostoretheprevious set-
ting valuesfor output voltageandcurrentthatarestored
inthe PRESET functionofthemain unit.
This keyand LED areusedtosetandindicatethepreparation

Ifthiskeyispressedwhenthe OUTPUT key© isset OFF,
the MEMORY LEDlightstoindicatethatthepresetopera-
tion canbe'-performed. --
The settingvalueisstoredfortheselectedkeynumberby
settingthevoltageandcurrentsettingvaluebytheV-key
®, A-key® orrotaryencoder© andthenselectingany
oneofthe PRESET keys (1,2,and3).Ifthiskeyispressed
again the MEMORY LED goesofftoindicatethatthepreset
status is canceled.
The conditionthatwasdeterminedbythepreviousvalue
settingisrestoredifthiskeyispressedwhenthe MEMORY
LED lights(beforethe PRESET keyis selected). Ifthe VARI-
ABLE key@ ispressedwhilethe MEMORY LEDislit,the
VARIABLELED lightsupforabout3 seconds, the ADDRESS
NO. usedinthe REMOTE modeisdisplayedonthevoltmeter
@ andammeter© displays.

@PRESET (1,2,3)key/ PRESET LED(1,2,3)(Green)
The output conditionsettingsarestoredina keybeforeoper-
ationandthe LED lightsinthecorresponding keys whenthe
settings are read.
Three typesof output conditions within thestandardrange
can besetandstoredasdesired.
These keys havetwooperationsmethod.Ifthe PRESET 1
key is pressed, the PRESET 1 LED lights.The following oper-
ations canbeperformed.

(1) Thesettingconditionscanbestored(onlywhen
MEMORY LED©lights).
(2) The output isperformedaccordingtothestored set-
tingsconditions,(withthe OUTPUT LED© on)
The operationandLEDfunctionarethe same for PRESET
2 and PRESET 3.

The OUTPUT LED lightswhenthe OUTPUT keyispressed
and thepositiveandnegativevoltageandcurrentare out-
putsimultaneously.Thevoltmeterandammeterindicatethe
output values atthistime.Ifthe output keyispressedwhen
the OUTPUT LED lights,the OUTPUT LED goesoffandthe
positiveandnegative output stopssimultaneously.
When thesystemispoweredon,the OUTPUT LED doesnot
light. Thatis,thesystemisinitializedtothe output OFF
mode.
® OUTPUT PROTECT Key/ OUTPUT PROTECT LED(Red)
This key sets the OUTPUT PROTECT functionONandOFF
and theLEDindicatesthefunctionstatus.
The OUTPUT PROTECT statusissetastheinitialsetting
forthepulsesurfaceandtheLEDlightswhenthepower
is firstapplied.
Ifthiskeyispressedwhenthe OUTPUT PROTECT function
is set,the OUTPUT PROTECT functioniscanceledandthe
OUTPUT PROTECT LED also goesoff.
The OUTPUT PROTECT functionshouldbesetandtheLED
should light duringnormaloperation.
Refer tothesection"OperatingProcedure7'fora detailed
explanation ofthesettingprocedures.
© KEY LOCK Switch/ KEY LOCK LED(Red)
LOCAL Key/ LOCAL LED(Green/Orange)
This keyturnsthe KEY LOCK settingONand OFF andthe
LED lightstoindicatethefunctionstatus.
TheKEY LOCK LEDisOFFastheinitialdefaultsettingaf-
terthepowerisfirstapplied.The LED lightswhenthe KEY
LOCK switchisturnedON.
When the KEY LOCK switchispressedagain,the LED goes
offtoindicatethattheKEY LOCK statusissetOFF.
When the KEY LOCK functionissetON,ailotherkeyswitch
operations, exceptforpowerswitch,cannotbeperformed.
This LEDlightsupgreenwhenthemachineaddressisset
to"0",andlightsuporangeforanymachineaddressother
than"0" (REMOTE mode). Press thiskeytochangethe
machine from the REMOTE modetothe LOCAL mode.
Ifthiskeyispressedwhenthemachineisinthe REMOTE
mode,theLEDgoesoffandthemachineswitchestothe
LOCAL mode.Rememberthatinthe REMOTE mode,oper-
ationofall keys otherthanthisoneareinoperable,andin-
put from therotaryencoderisnotaccepted. Fore details,
see Sections6 ofthismanual("Operation Procedure"), or
theseparateRemoteControlInstructionManual.
The ONandOFFsettingforthisswitchisperformedby
pressing andinsulatedroundshaft2 to3 mmindiameter
intheroundholeinthe front panel.

fortheCOMterminal.

6.OPERATION PROCEDURE
Make surethatthepowersourceprovidestheratedvol-
tage, beforeconnectingthepowercord(attachedtothe
unit)tothepowerinputconnecterwhichisinstalledon
thebackoftheunit.

SettingbytheRotaryEncoder
* Every setvaluecanbevariedbyusingtheV/Avalueset-
ting knoboftherotaryencodingsystem.Thesetvaluein-
creases iftheknobisturnedclockwise.Thesetvalue
decreases iftheknobisturnedcounterclockwise.
*WhenadjustingsettingsusingtheRotaryEncoder,the
amountbywhichthetargetparameterchangesperincre-
mentof rotation willvarydependingonhowquicklythe
knobisrotated.
1) Whenthe VARIABLE LEDislitupgreen ("SLOW"
mode)andtheRotaryEncoderknobisrotatedslow-
ly,thevoltage,current,settingswillchangeinincre-
mentsof10mV,10mA,respectively,perclickofthe
knob.Iftheknobisturnedquickly,thesettingswill
change inincrementsofabout2 V,2 A,respectively
(about2 V,1 A,respectively,forthe36-1model).
2) Whenthe VARIABLE LEDislituporange ("FAST"
'mode)andtheRotaryEncoderknobisrotatedslow-
ly,thevoltage,current,anddelaytimesettingswill
change bythesameincrementsasforthe "SLOW"
mode (i.e., 10mV,10mA).However,iftheknobis
turnedquicklyinthe "FAST" mode,thesettingswill
change inincrementsofaboutdoublethoseinthe
"SLOW" mode.Beyondthese values, theincrements
willincreasenofurthernomatterhowquicklytheknob
is rotated.
*Ifthepositiveornegative output voltagelevelissetto+
or- 50mV,thisnewvaluewillbestabilizedina fewse-
conds. Thesametemporaryvalueissetwhena newvalue
is setusingthe PRESET feature.
*Oneclickontherotaryencodermayforce 2-digit voltage
andcurrentdisplaydatatochangeatthesametimeorto
remainuncharged.
*If'automaticrangeup'modeisactivatedonthe PWR36-1
product,thedisplaydatawillbechangedin100mV unit
each 10clicksontherotaryencoder.Notethatthedata
exceeding 20V isnotdisplayedin10mV unit. The output
level canchangein10mV unit.
If'automaticrangedown'modeisactivated,thedataex-
ceeding19.9V isdisplayedin100mV unit (10 clicks). The
databelow19.9mVisdisplayedin10mV unit (oneclick)
such as19.9V^19.89V-^19.88V.
When turning theRotaryEncoder,donotapplyanex-
cessive forcetoitsshaft,asthismay cause damage.
The Rotaryencoderisequipped with a mechanicalcon-
tactandextendeduserequiresthecurrentrotaryencoder
tobereplaced with a newone.
Call thelocalservicerepresentativeifthisoccurs.

Iftheloadshort-circuits,orifthesetcurrent limit value
is reached,thecircuitbecomesoverloadedandthe out-
putvoltagedrops.The unit maybeuseda constanct-
currentpowersourceinthisoverloaded condition.
