Important Instructions
This chapter contains instructions which must be observed when using your
MBx406 – 4U Platform.
The manufacturer’s instructions provide useful information on your system.
Note on the Warranty
Due to their limited service life, parts which by their nature are subject to a
particularly high degree of wear (wearing parts) are excluded from the guarantee
beyond that provided by law. This applies, for example to the batteries.
Exclusion of Accident Liability Obligation
Kontron Embedded Computers shall be exempted from the statutory accident
liability obligation if the user fails to observe the safety instructions.
Liability Limitation / Exemption from the
Warranty Obligation
In the event of damage to the device caused by failure to observe the hints in this
manual and eventually on the device (especially the safety instructions), Kontron
Embedded Computers shall not be required to honor the warranty even during the
warranty period and shall be exempted from the statutory accident liability
obligation.

Safety Instructions
Please read this section carefully and observe the instructions for your own safety
and correct use of the device.
The chapter also contains information on approval and interference suppression
of your system.
Observe the warnings and instructions on the device and in the manual.
The MBx406 is built and tested by Kontron Embedded Computers in accordance
with EN60950/VDE0805 and left the works in a perfectly safe condition.
In order to maintain this condition and ensure safe operation, the user must
observe the instructions and warnings contained in this manual.
qThe device must be used in accordance with the instructions for use.
qThe electrical installations in the room must correspond to the requirements of
the respective regulations.
qTake care that there are no cables, particularly power cables, in areas where
persons can trip over them.
qDo not use power cable in sockets shared by a number of other power
consumers. Do not use an extension cable.
qThe unit is not completely disconnected from the power source by turning off
the power on/off button.
The unit is complete disconnected from the power source, only when the
power cord is disconnected either from the power source or from the unit.
Therefore the power cord and its connectors must always remain easily
accessible.
qOnly use the power cord supplied.
qDo not set up the device in the proximity of heat sources or in a damp
location. Make sure the device has adequate ventilation.

qOnly devices and components which fulfill the requirements of a SELV circuit
(security extra low voltage) in accordance with EN60950 may be connected to
the interfaces of the system.
qIn devices with –48 V DC PSU (MBx406-C) it is not allowed to remove or to
bridgeover the installed ATX-connector with the Kontron-ATX cable extension
(T10 A fuse integrated in the 3.3 V circuit).
qAll plugs on the connection cables must be screwed or locked to the housing.
qThe device is designed to be used in horizontal position.
qIt must be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible,
– if the device has visible damage or
– if the device no longer functions.
In these cases the device must be shut down and secured against
unintentional operation.
qRepairs may only be carried out by a person authorized by Kontron
Embedded Computers.
qMaintenance or repair on the open device may only be carried out by qualified
personnel authorized by Kontron Embedded Computers familiar with the
associated dangers.
qThe device may only be opened for the installation and removal of
PCI/ISA/AGP cards in accordance with the description in this manual. These
procedures have to be carried-out only by qualified specialist personnel.
qIf extensions are made to the device the legal stipulations and the device
specifications must be observed.
qThe device must be switched off before insertion of any PCI/ISA/AGP card.
qOnly approved original accessories by Kontron Embedded Computers have to
be used.
For DC powered systems
qThe DC-input should not exceed 60V DC and must fulfill SELV Requirements
of EN60950 standard.
qDC/DC-supplies don’t fulfill the requirements for centralized DC-Power
systems as required for the use in USA. That kind of units are not allowed to
be used as a stand-alone computer.

Operation of Laser Source Devices

The optional CD ROM- and DVD ROM-drives contain light-emitting diodes
(classified in accordance with IEC 825-1:1993: LASER CLASS 1) and, therefore,
must not be opened.
If the enclosure of such a drive is opened, invisible laser radiation is emitted. Do
not allow yourself to be exposed to this radiation.
Laser system meet the code of Federal Regulations 21 CFR,1040 for USA and
Canadian Radiation Emitting Devices Act, REDR C 1370.
Electronic Discharge (ESD)
A sudden discharge of electrostatic electricity can destroy static-sensitive devices
or micro-circuitry. Proper packaging and grounding techniques are necessary
precautions to prevent damage. Always take the following precautions:
1. Transport boards in static-safe containers such as boxes or bags.
2. Keep electrostatic sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-
free stations.
3. Always be properly grounded when touching a sensitive board, component, or
assembly.
4. Store electrostatic-sensitive boards in protective packaging or on conductive
foam.

Grounding Methods
Guard against electrostatic damage at the device by following these steps:
1. Cover workstations with approved anti-static material. Provide a wrist strap
connected to a work surface and properly grounded tools and equipment.
2. Use anti-static mats, heel straps, or air ionizes to give added protection.
3. Handle electrostatic-sensitive components, boards, and assemblies by the
case or the PCB edge.
4. Avoid contact with pins, leads, or circuitry.
5. Turn off power and input signals before inserting and removing connectors or
test equipment.
6. Keep work area free of non-conductive materials such as ordinary plastic
assembly aids and Styrofoam.
7. Use field service tools, such as cutters, screwdrivers, and vacuums that are
conductive.
8. Always place drives and boards PCB-assembly-side down on the foam.
Instructions for the Lithium Battery
The ATX motherboard is equipped with a Lithium battery. For the replacing of this
battery please observe the instructions described in the chapter “Replace the
Lithium Battery”.
Warning
Danger of explosion when replacing with wrong type of battery.
Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by
the manufacturer.
Do not dispose of lithium batteries in general trash collection.
Dispose of the battery according to the local regulations dealing
with the disposal of these special materials, (e.g. to the collecting
points for dispose of batteries).

FCC Rules
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B
digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential
installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may
cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no
guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this
equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which
can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to
try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
qReorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
qIncrease the separation between the equipment and receiver.
qConnect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which
the receiver is connected.
qConsult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
Electromagnetic Compatibility
This product has been designed for industrial, commercial and office use,
including small business use. The most recent version of the EMC guidelines
(EMC Rules 89/336/EWG) and/or the German EMC laws apply. If the user
modifies and/or adds to the equipment (e.g. installation of add-on cards), the
prerequisites for the CE conformity declaration (safety requirements) may no
longer apply.

Product Description
The MBx406 is a feature-packed 4U (19") system, designed for high-performance
applications. The MBx406 – 4U Platform is designed as a rackmount device. It
includes a motherboard with 32-bit PCI/ISA/AGP design slots.
The System is equipped with three front accessible drive bays (one 3,5” and two
5,25” bays).
The operating elements are located behind the drive door and consist of the
“Power Switch” and the “Reset Button” for the standard configuration.
The indicator LEDs are located on the right side of the left handle; for the
standard version these are composed of the “power LED” and “hard disk activity
LED”.
The unit incorporates E-PAC®technology to simplify the installation and the
removal of its components (HDD, FDD or CD-ROM-drive). The front side cooling
fans are mounted into E-PAC®.This advanced technology is also extreme
resistant to shock and vibrations and a definite air stream for the system cooling.
The washable air filter mat, located in the front of the unit, protects your system
against dust . It is changeable while the MBx406 –4U Platform is powered-up.
On the right side of the device there are the type label and the approval marks.

Operating Elements

Power Switch Press this button to turn the system on or off.
Reset Button If your system no longer reacts, you must restart the
MBx406 –4U Platform. To do this, press the restart
button.
Keylock Switch You can use the keylock switch to block the keyboard. If
this keyboard lock is activated it is not possible to make
any entries via the keyboard.
After switching off the system by the power on/off switch, a
residual voltage of 5 V on the motherboard is present.
The unit is not completely disconnected from the power
source by turning off the with the power on/off button.
The unit is complete disconnected from the power source,
only when the power cord is disconnected either from the
power source or the unit.
Therefore the power cord and its connectors must always
remain easily accessible.

When you reset, all data in the main memory are erased. The
system restarts without having to turn the computer off and
back on again.
LED Indicators
On the left side next to the handle of the MBx406 – 4U Platform there are the
indicator LEDs.
Power LED
(green)
This LED lights up green when the power supply is correct
and the system is turned on. If this LED does not light up
after turning on the system, then you must check the
systems mains power source.
Hard disk activity
LED (orange)
Indicate the hard disk activity.
Temperature
control LED
(red)
Optional
This LED indicator is lighting if is reached the admitted
limit temperature of your system.
Do not press the disk eject while the disk drive LED is lit or
blinking.
Air Filter Hood Cover
On the systems front side, behind the detachable hood cover are located the air
intake openings.
Behind the hood cover there are located the washable air filter mat which protects
your system against dust (see chapter: “Cleaning the Air Filter Mat”).

Drive Door
You can protect the MBx406 – 4U Platform drives from unauthorized use by
means of drive doors with a safety lock.
The drive door must be locked during the operation.
The key should be kept somewhere where it is not accessible to
unauthorized persons.
The MBx406 – 4U Platform comes equipped with two keys. If the
keys get lost or damaged, then the drive door can be opened only
by Kontron Embedded Computers service personnel.
Frontal Accessible Drive Bays
The MBx406 – 4U Platform is equipped with three front accessible drive bays:

qtwo 5,25” bays.

Ports on the Rear Panel
The configuration respectively the number of the MBx406 – 4U
Platform interfaces may vary depending on the device
equipment.
Motherboard - External Interfaces
The motherboard external interfaces may vary depending on the
used motherboard version.
For detailed motherboard interface description refer to the supplied
Motherboard Manual.
The motherboards are available with following expansion slots ( the number of the
specific expansion slots is depending on the type of the used motherboard).
qPCI and/or ISA expansion slots (full size) to expand the system with additional
cards
qAGP expansion slot to expand the system with a AGP-graphic card
To expand your system with additional cards, please observe the
power consumption specification specified in the chapter “Main
Specifications” and that every additional card does not exceed 25 W
power consumption.
