Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008

NOTE: Before using this information and the product it supports, read the general
information in Section 5.0 Notices in this document.
Follow the installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless
these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those
in this document.
1.0 What you will need
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
•A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows Server® 2003 or Microsoft® Windows
Server® 2008
•USB diskette drive and the RAID device driver diskette (Windows 2003 only).
(To create this diskette, see 3.1 Creating a RAID device driver diskette.)
•A USB media device containing a RAID device driver might be required
(Windows Server 2008 only).
•Depending on your server, an external DVD reader device might be required.
•Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.lenovo.com/thinkserver/ for the
Lenovo® ThinkServer® Proven list of supported options and part numbers for the
server. You will need to set up the logical drive array before installing the
operating system.

2.0 Where to download device drivers and files
You can download the device drivers from the Device Drivers matrix on the Lenovo
Support Web site: http://www.lenovo.com/support

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 and 2008
For Windows 2003 only, you must first download the RAID device driver onto a
diskette.
3.1 Creating a RAID device driver diskette (Windows Server 2003 only)
To create the RAID device driver diskette, complete the following steps:
1. From an Internet-connected system with a diskette drive, go to:
http://www.lenovo.com/support .
2. To locate the RAID drivers for your server, navigate to the appropriate server.
3. Download the Windows 2003 RAID diskette (.zip file).
4. Unzip/Extract the files onto a 3.5-inch diskette.
3.2 Creating a logical array (Windows Server 2003 and 2008)
To create a logical array, complete the following steps:
Note: The following steps might vary slightly for different RAID adapters.
1. Switch on the server.
2. When prompted, press Cto launch the Configuration Utility.
3. Press Yto Continue Loading.
4. Select the appropriate adapter and click Start.
5. Select Configuration Wizard in the left frame.
6. Select New Configuration. Note: Any existing or prior configurations will be
cleared and all data will be lost.
7. Select Next.
8. Click Yes when asked if you desire to perform the action.
9. Select Configuration as well as the Redundancy if applicable. Click Next.
10. Click Accept to approve the configuration and click Yes to save the
configuration.
11. Click Yes to Initialize
12. Select the drive that is desired for the boot drive.
13. Select the radio button for the selected boot drive. Click Go.
14. Verify current="selected boot drive". Click Back
15. Click Exit in the left frame. Click Yes to exit the application.
16. Reboot the system.
3.3 Installing Windows Server 2003
To install Windows Server 2003, complete the following steps:
1. Ensure that the server is turned off.
2. Connect a USB diskette drive to the server.

3. Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD into the CD
drive. If you are prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd",
press any key.
4. When you are prompted to Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or
RAID driver, press F6. Windows Server 2003 Setup copies the files from the
setup CD. This process takes a few minutes.
5. When you are prompted to manually specify a controller, select S to specify
additional devices.
6. When you are prompted for the manufacture-supplied hardware support diskette,
insert the RAID driver diskette that you created earlier and press Enter.
7. When the device driver name is displayed, select the applicable driver and press
Enter.
8. After the files are copied from the diskette, press Enter. Files are copied from the
setup CD. This process takes several minutes.
9. When you are prompted to install Windows Server 2003, press Enter.
10. When the license agreement is displayed, read the license agreement, and press
F8 to agree.
11. When Windows Server 2003 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available
on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive
partition in which to install Windows Server 2003:
oAllow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one
primary partition, highlight Unpartitioned space for the hard disk drive
on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and press Enter.
oCreate a partition: To create a partition, highlight Unpartitioned space for
the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and
press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to
allocate from the unpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB)
and press Enter.
oDelete a partition.
12. When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.
Notes:
oSetup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the
drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
oThe server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues
with the installation of Windows Server 2003. During this process, Setup
automatically installs and configures devices in the server. This process
takes several minutes.
13. Change the regional settings if you are not installing the server in the U.S. Click
Next.
Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows Server 2003, click
Control Panel and click Regional Options.

14. In the Personalize Your Software window, when you are prompted for your name
and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in
the Organization field. The names that you type are used as default server names.
Applications that you install later use this information for the product registration
and document identification. Click Next.
15. When you are prompted for the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key, type the
Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next. (Setup
uses the organization name that was entered previously, as a suggested name for
the server.)
16. In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your
organization. Click Next.
17. In the Name and Administrator Password window, when you are prompted for an
administrator password and server name, type the server name and password.
Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously as a
suggested name for the server.)
Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase
and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.
18. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the
button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you
want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and
Down Arrow keys. Click Next.
Note: Windows Server 2003 services perform many tasks that are dependent on
the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the
correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.
The remaining operating-system components are installed and configured
according to the options that you specified. The display in the left column shows
the amount of time remaining until the Windows Server 2003 installation is
completed. This process might take several minutes.
When Windows Server 2003 Setup has completed installation, the server
automatically restarts.
19. After Windows Server 2003 starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on.
20. When the desktop is displayed, the Windows Server Post-Setup Security Updates
wizard begins. If this server is connected to the Internet, this wizard helps you
download software security updates and configure the system to retrieve updates
automatically.
21. After closing the Security Updates wizard, the Manage Your Server wizard
launches automatically. This wizard helps you to add and configure additional
roles for the server, such as File Server, DHCP Server, Active Directory, and
DNS. For more information, click Read about server roles in the wizard.

Note: You can skip this step and launch the wizard later by clicking Start,
Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Configure Your Server
Wizard.
3.4 Installing Windows Server 2008
To install Microsoft Windows Server 2008, complete the following steps:
1. Connect the server to a network as required.
2. Depending on your server, you might need to attach an external DVD reader
device.
3. Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2008 Setup DVD into the DVD
drive.
4. When you are prompted with the message "press any key to boot from cd or dvd",
press any key. Windows Server 2008 Setup copies the files from the Setup DVD.
Windows load the files (this process takes several minutes).
5. In the Windows Server 2008 window, select the following:
a. For Language to install, select English.
b. For Time and currency format, select English (United States).
c. For Keyboard or input method, select US.
6. Click Next.
7. Click Install Now.
8. Type your product key.
a. Check the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online check box
and click Next.
b. Scroll down and read the license agreement.
c. Click I accept the license terms and click Next.
9. Select Custom (advanced).
10. You might be prompted to install a RAID controller (driver). If prompted, connect
the USB media device containing the RAID device driver.
11. When Windows Server 2008 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available
on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive
partition in which to install Windows Server 2008:
oAllow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one
primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk
drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008 and press Next.
oCreate a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated
space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows
Server 2008, click Drive options (advanced); then, click New. You are
prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the
nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB), click Apply;
then, click Next.
oDelete a partition.
12. Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive
partition. This process takes several minutes.

When Windows Server 2008 Setup has completed installation, the server
automatically restarts.
13. After Windows Server 2008 restarts, you will be prompted to change the
administrator password before you can log on.
14. After you are logged on as the Administrator, a configuration wizard window is
displayed. Use the wizard for naming and basic networking setup.
15. Next, use the Microsoft Server 2008 Roles and Features functions to setup the
server to your specific needs.
4.0 Post installation instructions: Installing and
updating device drivers
To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, open Device
Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other
Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager,
complete the following steps:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer.
3. Click Manage and select Device Manager in the left pane.
The following section includes instructions for installing device drivers.
4.1 Installing a device driver
To install a device driver, complete the following steps:
1. Go to: http://www.lenovo.com/support .
2. To locate the device drivers for your server, navigate to the appropriate server and
select the desired device driver.
3. Type c:\drivers\<directory name> for the folder where the files are to
be saved. Click Finish.
4. Click Yes to create the folder.
5. When the message "The package has been delivered successfully" is displayed,
click OK.
6. Navigate to c:\drivers\<directory name>, and launch the executable
that was downloaded.
7. In the Welcome window, click Next.
8. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, then select I accept the
terms in the license agreement, and click Next to continue.
9. Choose the path where you want the installation files to be copied, click Next.
10. Click Install to begin the installation.
11. When prompted to finish the installation, make sure to check the box associated
with finishing the installation. Click Finish.

To configure the network, click: Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, and
select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.
To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network
connections window, and click Properties.
To join a domain, click Start, Control Panel, System, click the Computer Name tab,
and then click Change.
