Check your packing list to verify that you received everything
included with the Odyssey
®
Infrared Imaging System, including the
following items:

Unpacking the Odyssey Imager
Remove the Manuals and Accessories Kit and set it aside. Use at least
two people to move the Odyssey Imager, as it weighs 32 kg (70
pounds). Lift under the metal enclosure on each side and gently set
the Odyssey Imager at its new position.
Place the instrument on a laboratory bench that is sufficiently sturdy
to bear its weight. Place the instrument away from sinks or other

sources of water that pose a shock hazard. Recommended operating
conditions are 15-35 °C and dew point not greater than 20 °C. For
proper ventilation, do not place the instrument in a location where
the fans on the back are blocked.
Each plastic foot on the bottom of the instrument has a threaded
metal insert that can be turned up or down to adjust its height.
Though not needed for proper operation, leveling the instrument
prevents moist membranes from sliding on the scanning surface. If
the laboratory bench is not level, adjust the feet as necessary to level
the instrument. After leveling, make sure all four feet contact the
bench top to prevent the instrument from rocking.
When you are finished unpacking Odyssey, unpack the Ethernet
switch found in the accessories kit.
The Odyssey Infrared Imager is a server device that can be connected
via TCP/IP to the system computer or to your network. The basic
installation procedure in Chapter 2 describes how to connect the
Odyssey Imager directly to the computer, establish communication,
and install Odyssey Application Software. For users who do not want
to connect Odyssey to a network, the installation procedure is
complete after following the instructions in Chapter 2.
Users who want to connect Odyssey to their network should perform
the basic installation in Chapter 2, confirm proper operation, and
then follow the network installation procedure in Chapter 3 to
complete the installation. Connection to a network allows image
data, run parameters, and security protocols to be viewed or changed
using any computer on the network. For example, finished scans can
be downloaded from the Odyssey hard disk to a computer in your
office for analysis and storage.

For networks connected to the Internet, the safest way to protect your
research and data is to put the Odyssey instrument and computer on
a subnet that is behind a firewall. Inexpensive firewall appliances
can perform this function. Contact your local IT department for help
in selection and configuration if your organization does not already
provide you with firewall protection. Legitimate, safe, remote access
can still be achieved when the Odyssey system is protected by a
firewall. Failure to adequately protect the Odyssey instrument or its
computer from attack can have very serious consequences that are
not covered by LI-COR's express or implied warranty.

The installation procedure in this chapter configures both the
Odyssey Imager and its computer. Communication is established by
connecting the Odyssey Imager to the computer without using your
network. Using this direct connection, you can verify that the
instrument is working correctly and install the Odyssey Application
Software. After software installation, the computer can be used to
start scans and analyze images. If you want to extend this basic
configuration so files can be transferred over your network, the
Odyssey Imager and computer can be connected to your network as
described in Chapter 3.
The Ethernet switch and two Cat. 5 RJ-45 network cables included
with the system are required for this installation. The following topics
are included in this chapter:

Basic Installation Procedure
1) Unpack the computer and connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse
and any other accessories as described in the documentation
included with your computer. Connect the power cords using the
included surge protector, but don’t turn the computer on
(Windows
®
XP setup is described later in this chapter).
2) Connect a supplied Cat. 5 RJ-45 cable to the port labeled 10BASE-T
or
100BASE-TX on the Odyssey back panel as shown below.
3) Connect the other end of the Cat. 5 RJ-45 cable to port one on the
switch.
4) Use the second Cat. 5 RJ-45 cable to connect one of the network
ports on the computer to port two on the switch.

Power Connections
1) Plug the female end of the Odyssey power cord into the bottom
receptacle on the instrument back panel (the top receptacle is not
used), and then plug the power cord into the surge protector.
2) If you are using a Ethernet switch, connect its power cord to the
Power port on the switch. Apply power to the switch by plugging
the power cord into the supply outlet (there is no ON/OFF
switch).
3) Use a pen or small screwdriver to move the shipping lock switch
(located on the instrument back panel) to the
Operate (down)
position.
4) Make sure the Odyssey lid is closed and press the Power key on
the instrument keypad.
At the end of startup (up to five minutes in some cases) the instrument
name is displayed.

Basic Installation Procedure
An IP address must be entered into the Odyssey Imager via the front
panel keypad before communication can be initiated with the
computer. (An IP address uniquely identifies a device on a network.)
Odyssey is configured with a default IP address that is sufficient for
this basic installation in which Odyssey is connected only to the
computer. Use the following steps to verify that the default IP address
is correct:
1) Press the Stop and Next keys simultaneously.
If
Stop and Next are pressed simultaneously, you will be
prompted for
IP Type .

2) If the IP Type is not Static , press the Next key to toggle between
Static and DHCP until Static is displayed.
3) With Static displayed, press Start (Y) to choose Static addressing.
The current IP address is displayed and you have the option to edit
the address or cancel to leave it the same.
4) The IP address should be 172.024.041.180/16 as shown above.
If the address on the instrument display is correct, press
Stop to
select the
Cancel option and skip to the Window XP setup
instructions below.
If the IP address is not correct, change it to 172.024.041.180/16
using the following procedure:
The cursor should be under the first digit, indicating the first digit is
ready to be edited. Press
Start (Y) to increment the first digit until “1”
is displayed, then press
Next to move the cursor to the next digit.
Continue until all numbers (including zeros) shown above are
entered. The slash is not entered and the cursor will jump over it
when you press
Next after entering the last digit of the twelve digit IP
address. Enter one and six as the last two digits and press
Next again.
Note: The number 16 sets the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0.
Notice that the diamond shape next to OK
on the display matches the diamond in the
center of the Start (Y) key.
The down-arrow shape next to Cancel on
the display matches the Stop (N) key.

Odyssey prompts you to save the IP address changes ( Yes ) or
abandon them (
No ).
Press
Start (Y) to save the address changes.
The computer shipped with the Odyssey Imager is pre-loaded with
the Microsoft
®
Windows
®
XP operating system.
1) Turn on the computer and use the documentation that came with
the computer to complete the Windows XP setup procedure.
You will need to provide some information, including your name,
organization, computer name, and Administrator password. When
entering account names and passwords, be sure to use names you
will remember – LI-COR is not responsible for lost account names or
passwords.
After finishing the software setup procedure, follow the steps below
to enter the IP address for the computer.
2) In the Windows Start menu, choose control panel.
3) Double click the Network Connections control panel.

4) Double click Local Area Connection .
5) In the Local Area Connection Status window, click Properties .

6) In the list of connection items, scroll down and select Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)
.
7) Click Properties .
8) Select Use the following IP address: and enter the IP address and
Subnet mask as shown.

9) Click OK to enter the computer IP address.
10) Click OK to dismiss the Properties window, click Close to close
the Local Area Connection Status window, and close the Network
Connections window.
Setting Date and Time
1) Assuming the control panel is still open, double-click the
Date/Time control panel.
2) Update the date and time as needed and click OK to close the
control panel.
Changing Power Management Settings
During processes like scanning, the computer may be idle for a
period of time. The default power management options for the
computer will put the computer in standby mode after 20 minutes of
idle operation. Since this can interrupt ongoing Odyssey processes,
the power conservation features should be turned off.

1) Assuming the control panel window is still open, double-click
Power Options .
2) SetTurn Off Hard Disks, System Standby, and System Hibernates
to Never.
3) Click OK to close the Power Options control panel, then close
the Control Panel window.
To verify that the IP addresses in Odyssey and the computer have
been entered correctly, use the following steps to log on to Odyssey
and add a user account using an Internet browser.

1) Open an Internet browser application on your computer (i.e.,
Netscape®4.5 or above, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or above).
Note: When the browser opens, you will get an error message that implies a
connection failure or that the browser cannot find a certain server. This message
is not related to Odyssey and can be dismissed. The message is displayed
because the browser is configured to automatically load a “home” page from the
Internet. The browser preferences can be used to disable automatic loading of a
home page if you so desire.
2) In the location (URL) field, enter http://172.24.41.180
(the default IP address entered in the Odyssey Imager) and press
Enter on the keyboard.
You do not need to enter the “/16” (netmask) portion of the address or the zeros
before 24 and 41.
3) If you have logged on correctly, Odyssey will return a “home”
page with four buttons.
4) Click Utilities.

5) When prompted for a user name and password, enter admin in
both fields and click OK.
“admin” is the default administrator account entered by LI-COR. You
must be logged on using an account with administrator rights to add
new user accounts. For everyday operation, user accounts with
control rights should be used. Additional information about creating
accounts can be found in the Odyssey Operator’s Manual.
6) Click the Manage User Accounts link on the Utilities page.
7) Click Add Account.

accounts. Using this
page, accounts can be
added, deleted, or
changed.
