Electrode Status Display (See Page 7) - Provides electrode conductance status of the
Sensor to indicate whether electrode adjustment is warranted.
Artifact (ARTF)- Measures the level of physiological (not brain-related) and
environmental noise that the system detects. This value ranges from 0 to 100%.
The numeric value of ARTF is a moving average.
Electromyograph (EMG) - Measures the level of detected muscle activity, such as
grimacing or jaw clenching. This value ranges from 0 to 100%. The numeric value of
EMG is a moving average.
Suppression Ratio (SR) - Measures the level of EEG signal suppression. This value
ranges from 0 to 100%. The numeric value of SR is a moving average.
Patient State Index (PSI) (See Page 9) - Measures anesthetic depth. This value ranges
from 0 to 100. The numeric value of PSI is a moving average. The trend display
for PSI is color-coded, with the green band representing the range of values that is
within user-configurable alarm limits.
EEG Display (See Page 8) - Reflect electrical activity of the frontal and pre-frontal
cortices of the brain.
Density Spectral Array (DSA) (See Page 10) - Utilizes color to represent the power
levels of EEG between 0 and 30 Hz (Upper limit can be adjusted to 40 Hz).

SedLine is a patient-connected, 4-channel processed electroencephalograph (EEG) monitor designed specifically for intraoperative or intensive
care use. It displays electrode status, EEG waveforms and Density Spectral Array (DSA).
General knowledge of electroencephalograph (EEG) monitoring and an understanding of the features and functions of the SedLine Sedation
Monitor are prerequisites for proper use.
Do not operate the SedLine Sedation Monitor without completely reading and understanding these instructions.

Applying
the Sensor
To connect the Sensor and place it on a patient, follow the steps below:
1. Prep skin with alcohol and dry before applying Sensor.
2. Peel the release liner from the center foam and discard.
3. Center CB/CT/L1/R1 electrodes on forehead above nose. (A)
4. Press the white lining around the electrodes firmly onto the forehead to secure the Sensor. Do not press directly on the electrode,
otherwise the gel may leak out. (B)
5. Peel release liner from R2 foam and discard.
6. Apply R2 in hairless area just above temple. (C)
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for L2.
8. Align the white end of the Patient Cable with the arrow on the Sensor connector.
9. Push together until the Sensor clicks into place. (D)
10. Ensure the monitor is connected and powered up.
11. If any of the electrodes are displayed as red, yellow, or blue on the Electrode Status Display on the monitor, push gently and wiggle
the electrodes until all electrodes are displayed as yellow or green.

• It is recommended that the Sensor be applied prior to induction to assess patient’s PSI baseline and to monitor the brain’s
response to induction agents.
• The Sensor is designed to fit patients with head circumference of 20 to 25 inches (50 to 64 cm).

Electrode Status Display
The electrode status display provides electrode conductance status of the Sensor.
Display Description Action
Green - Electrode impedance is within acceptable
range. No electrode adjustment necessary.
Yellow - Electrode impedance is marginal but
acceptable. Minor electrode adjustment may be required.
Red - Electrode impedance is out of acceptable
range.
1. Gently push/wiggle electrodes until all are yellow and/or green.
2. Re-prepping of electrode may be necessary.
Blue - Unreliable connection or disconnection of
Sensor electrodes.
Confirm that all electrodes, particularly electrodes CT and CB, of the Sensor are
properly connected.
Light Gray - Impedance values are unavailable due
to Sensor, Patient Cable, or Module not adequately
detected.
1. Replace the Patient Cable.
2. The Module may need to be replaced.
Dark Gray with Cyan X - Gel-bridging detected on
the electrode.
1. Clean any gel that has leaked outside of the electrodes on the patient's forehead.
2. Confirm that all electrodes of the Sensor are properly connected.
3. The Sensor may need to be replaced.
Dark Gray - Electrode monitoring disabled. All
electrode icons will be dark gray.
1. Confirm that Sensor is plugged into Patient Cable.
2. Confirm that Patient Cable is connected to Module.

Patient State Index (PSI)
Numeric Value
When there is
insufficient EEG
data to calculate
a PSI, the PSI
numeric value
will be replaced
by dashes (--).
Trend
PSI trend conveys the PSI
numeric values over a
period of time. The vertical
axis range is 0 to 100 and
it is configurable by the
user. The horizontal axis
represents time, and the
timeframe displayed is
configurable by the user.
Blue conveys that the
PSI reading is
below the lower limits.
Green conveys that the
PSI reading is
within limits.
Yellow conveys that the
PSI reading is
above the upper limits.
Expanding and Contracting Trend
Pinch any trend display to expand or contract the
timeframe displayed for all trending parameters.
EEG Display
• The EEG waveforms reflect electrical activity of the frontal and pre-frontal cortices of the brain.
• The display is configured to contain 4 data input sources.
• These input sources are acquired from electrodes on the Sensor: L1, R1, L2, and R2.
Default speed of waveforms is 30 mm/sec.

displays the
amplitude
for different
electrodes.
The PSI is the result of... not limited to (1) changes in power in various EEG frequency bands; (2) changes in symmetry and synchronization
between critical brain regions; and (3) the inhibition of regions of the frontal cortex.
Default amplitude of waveforms is 5 uV/mm.

Horizontal axis represents time.

Understanding the DSA
Periods of artifact (ARTF) are conveyed by vertical white lines.
Density Spectral Array (DSA)
Frequency Scale
The DSA represents
power between
0-30 Hz as well as
0-40 Hz.
The “L” and
“R” horizontal
color graphs
represent the
activities of
the EEG from
the left and
right frontal
scalp regions,
respectively.
95% spectral edge frequency (SEF) is
displayed on each of the left and right
color graphs as a white trend line.
Periods of suppression are conveyed by
vertical black lines with a blue bar at
the O Hz timeline for both the left and
the right sides. (Periods of no data are
conveyed by vertical black lines only.)
