1 About these short instructions
The present short instructions contain important chapters from the more
detailed manual. In addition to an introduction, safety instructions and an
overview of the instruments, you will also find information about the
installation and operation of the 916 Ti‑Touch in addition to documents
regarding conformity and warranty. You will find the more detailed man-
ual as a PDF file on the external storage medium included in the scope of
delivery.

2 Introduction
2.1 Instrument description
The 916 Ti‑Touch is a compact titration system for volumetric titration.
This titrator combines in a single device the touch-sensitive color monitor
for convenient and efficient operation, the titration unit and as well as
depending on the product version an integrated stirrer interface for a pro-
peller stirrer. The upper side of the housing offers space for the titrant and
the titration vessel. The titrator is standard-equipped for operation with an
external dosing drive of the 800 Dosino type with a dosing unit. You can,
however, also use a 805 Dosimat with an exchange unit. Thanks to its
compact construction, you can use the 916 Ti‑Touch in a small space as a
stand-alone titrator.
You manage titrants, sensors, methods, etc. conveniently in the internal
memory of the 916 Ti‑Touch. You can also save your files externally
through the USB connector, e.g. on a USB flash drive. On this storage
medium you can not only store your methods and determinations, but
also create a backup together with all of the data and settings of your sys-
tem.
The integrated Ethernet connector is available to you should you wish to
connect your 916 Ti‑Touch to a network. The network connection offers
you the following advantages:
￭Saving data to a PC within the network
￭Printing reports on a network printer
￭Sending displayed messages as e-mails
2.1.1 Titration and measuring modes
The 916 Ti‑Touch supports the following titration and measuring modes.

Dynamic equivalence point titration. The reagent is added in variable
volume steps.

–U (potentiometric voltage measurement)
–Ipol (voltametric measurement with selectable polarization cur-
rent)
–Upol (amperometric measurement with selectable polarization
voltage)

2.1.2 Connectors
The 916 Ti‑Touch is equipped with the following connectors:
￭Power connection
For connecting to the power grid using the power supply unit provi-
ded.
￭Two MSB connectors (Metrohm Serial Bus)
For connecting dosing devices, one additional stirrer or a Remote Box.
￭USB connector
For connecting peripheral devices (printer, PC keyboard, etc.), a USB
flash drive or a USB hub.
￭Sensor connectors
One connector each for:
– Potentiometric electrodes (pH, ISE, metal)
– Reference electrodes
– Polarizable electrodes
– Intelligent electrodes (iTrodes)
– Temperature sensors (Pt1000 or NTC)
￭Stirrer connector (depending on the product version)
For connecting a propeller stirrer (only available for the version without
magnetic stirrer).
￭Ethernet connector
For connecting the Ti‑Touch to a network.
2.1.3 Intended use
The 916 Ti‑Touch is designed for usage as a titrator in analytical laborato-
ries. Its main application field is volumetric titration.
This instrument is suitable for processing chemicals and flammable sam-
ples. Therefore, the use of the instrument requires the user to have basic
knowledge and experience in handling toxic and caustic substances.
Knowledge regarding the application of fire prevention measures prescri-
bed for laboratories is also mandatory.

3 Safety instructions
3.1 General notes on safety
WARNING
Operate this instrument only according to the information contained in
this documentation.
This instrument left the factory in a flawless state in terms of technical
safety. To maintain this state and ensure non-hazardous operation of the
instrument, the following instructions must be observed carefully.
3.2 Electrical safety
The electrical safety when working with the instrument is ensured as part
of the international standard IEC 61010.
WARNING
Only personnel qualified by Metrohm are authorized to carry out service
work on electronic components.
WARNING
Never open the housing of the instrument. The instrument could be
damaged by this. There is also a risk of serious injury if live components
are touched.
There are no parts inside the housing which can be serviced or replaced
by the user.
Supply voltage
WARNING
An incorrect supply voltage can damage the instrument.
Only operate this instrument with a supply voltage specified for it (see
rear panel of the instrument).

Protection against electrostatic charges
WARNING
Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic charges and can be
destroyed by discharges.
Do not fail to pull the power cord out of the power socket before you
set up or disconnect electrical plug connections at the rear of the
instrument.
3.3 Tubing and capillary connections
CAUTION
Leaks in tubing and capillary connections are a safety risk. Tighten all
connections well by hand. Avoid applying excessive force to tubing con-
nections. Damaged tubing ends lead to leakage. Appropriate tools can
be used to loosen connections.
Check the connections regularly for leakage. If the instrument is used
mainly in unattended operation, then weekly inspections are manda-
tory.
3.4 Flammable solvents and chemicals
WARNING
All relevant safety measures are to be observed when working with
flammable solvents and chemicals.
￭Set up the instrument in a well-ventilated location (e.g. fume cup-
board).
￭Keep all sources of flame far from the workplace.
￭Clean up spilled liquids and solids immediately.
￭Follow the safety instructions of the chemical manufacturer.

3.5 Recycling and disposal
This product is covered by European Directive 2012/19/EU, WEEE – Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
The correct disposal of your old instrument will help to prevent negative
effects on the environment and public health.
More details about the disposal of your old instrument can be obtained
from your local authorities, from waste disposal companies or from your
local dealer.

5 Installation
5.1 Setting up the instrument
5.1.1 Packaging
The instrument is supplied in protective packaging together with the sepa-
rately packed accessories. Keep this packaging, as only this ensures safe
transportation of the instrument.
5.1.2 Checks
Immediately after receipt, check whether the shipment has arrived com-
plete and without damage by comparing it with the delivery note.
5.1.3 Location
The instrument has been developed for operation indoors and may not be
used in explosive environments.
Place the instrument in a location of the laboratory which is suitable for
operation and free of vibrations and which provides protection against
corrosive atmosphere and contamination by chemicals.
The instrument should be protected against excessive temperature fluctua-
tions and direct sunlight.
5.2 Connecting the power supply unit
The 916 Ti‑Touch has an external power supply unit for a 24 V power sup-
ply (DC). This is connected to the mains connection of the Ti‑Touch.
WARNING
An incorrect mains voltage can damage the device.
Operate the device only with the mains voltage specified for it. Use the
supplied power supply unit exclusively, see Technical specifications
chapter.

Proceed as follows:
1Connect the plug of the external power supply unit with the mains
connection of the Ti‑Touch (see figure 3, page 13).
NOTICE
The plug of the power supply unit is protected against accidental
disconnection of the cable by means of a pull-out protection fea-
ture. If you wish to pull out the plug, you will first need to pull
back the outer plug sleeve marked with arrows.
2Connect the mains cable with the external power supply unit of the
Ti‑Touch and with the mains supply.
CAUTION
Switch off the Ti‑Touch correctly by pressing the mains switch before
you disconnect the electricity supply. If this is not done, then there is a
danger of data loss.

5.3 Mounting the electrode holder ￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭￭

5.3 Mounting the electrode holder
An electrode or, depending on the product version, a propeller stirrer can
be mounted onto the 916 Ti‑Touch with the aid of the electrode holder.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the electrode or rod stirrer, the permissible
immersion depth of the products applied can be fixed with the aid of
the clamping ring on the electrode holder.
Proceed as follows:
1Push the clamping ring (6.2013.010) down as far as possible onto
the mounted support rod (6.2016.050). Make sure while doing so
that the indent is facing upwards.
2Attach the electrode holder (6.2021.020) on the support rod.
3Keep the locking lever pressed down and push the electrode holder
down.
4Release the locking lever at the desired position. The electrode holder
is fixed.
5Readjust the clamping ring to the electrode holder position and
screw tight to fix the position of the electrode holder. Make sure that
the nose of the electrode holder is placed in the opening of the
clamping ring.
