System Analyzer
For testing automotive hybrid battery packs
and auxiliary lead-acid batteries

HYB-1000 KIT
For safe, ecient, and accurate testing, review the safety and
operating instructions in this manual before using the analyzer.
Safety Precautions
Inspect the battery for damages and check the electrolyte level.
If the electrolyte level is too low, replenish it and fully charge
the battery. Always use the necessary safety precautions when
working with batteries to prevent severe injury or death.
Follow all manufacturers’instructions and BCI (Battery Council
International) safety recommendations, which include the
following precautions:
•DANGER—RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES: Batteries can pro-
duce a highly explosive mix of hydrogen gas and oxygen,
even when the battery is not in operation. Always work
in a well-ventilated area. Never smoke or allow a spark or
ame in the vicinity of a battery.
•WARNING—REQUIRED BY CALIFORNIA PROP. 65: Bat-
tery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead
and lead compounds, chemicals known to the state of
California to cause cancer and birth defects or other re-
productive harm. Wash hands after handling.
•Battery acid is highly corrosive. If acid enters your eyes, im-
mediately ush them thoroughly with running cold water
for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If bat-
tery acid gets on your skin or clothing, wash immediately
with water and baking soda.
•Always wear proper safety glasses or face shield when
working with or around batteries.
•Keep hair, hands, and clothing as well as the analyzer cords
and cables away from moving engine parts.
•Remove any jewelry or watches before you start servicing
the battery.
•Use caution when working with metallic tools to prevent
sparks or short circuits.
•Never lean over a battery when testing, charging, or jump
starting it.
Risk of explosive gases
Lead-acid batteries generate explosive gases
during normal operation, and when discharged
or charged.

Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories
contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals
known to the state of California to cause
cancer and birth defects or other reproductive
harm. Wash hands after handling.
Inspecting the Battery
Before starting the test, visually inspect the battery for:
• Cracked,buckled,orleakingcase.Ifyouseeanyofthese
defects, replace the battery.
• Corroded,loose,ordamagedcablesandconnections.Re-
pair or replace as needed.
• Corrosion on the battery terminals, dirt, or acid on the
case top. Clean the case and terminals using a wire brush
and a mixture of water and baking soda.
• Lowelectrolytelevel.Iftheelectrolytelevelistoolow,add
distilled water to the level indicated by the battery manu-
facturer, and fully charge the battery. Do not overll.
• Corroded or loose battery tray and hold-down xture.
Tighten or replace as needed.
• Loose battery cable connections. Repair or replace as
needed. Terminals on side-post batteries must be tight-
ened before testing.
Chapter 1: Before You Begin

HYB-1000 KIT
The Midtronics HYB-1000 provides technicians with the
capability to perform battery service maintenance testing on
several leading hybrid vehicles.
Simply connect the wireless convergence communication
module to the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics port and follow
the menu instructions on the HYB-1000.
The following test functions are available:
• 12voltAuxiliaryBatteryTest
• DTCCodeReading
• DTCCodeReset
• LiveData–RunChart
• DriveTest
The drive test is an interactive, menu-driven test that uses live
vehicle sensor information while performing an accelerated
drive test. The technician can print the results to an IR printer
at the end of the test.
The large backlit graphical screen and icon-based user
interface make diagnostics simple for the novice and
experienced electrical technician. An alphanumeric keypad
with selection scrolling and soft (multifunction) keys make the
HYB-1000 as easy to use as a remote control or cell phone. A
memory card system allows for upgrades, quick storage, and
transfer of test data.

Test Leads, Connections, and Data Ports
The top of the HYB-1000 has two connectors for test cables:
RJ45 connector (Accessories Port) with a release lever for
accessory test cable (for future expansion).
6-pin connector, with a locking ring, for the auxiliary bat-
tery test leads.
Temperature measurement sensor.

Data transmitter, which transmits test results to an IR
printer




The bottom and right side of the HYB-1000 tester have two
data ports:

DB-9 connector for wireless connectivity module.

Spring-loaded data card slot for DTC code denitions, test
data storage and software upgrades.



Connecting The Battery Test Cable
Connect the battery test cable to the HYB-1000 handheld
tester by rst aligning the cable connector’s 6 pins with the
holes on top of the HYB-1000. Firmly insert the connector and
nger-tighten the locking ring.
Inserting a Data Card
The data card included with the HYB-1000 contains the DTC
code denitions. The HYB-1000 can also write test results on
the card.
To remove the data card, push briey on the its edge to release
it and pull it from the slot. When inserting a new card, push it
into the slot until it locks. The card is correctly inserted when it
is not protruding from the slot.

Display and Keypad
The analyzer keypad and display work together to help you
quickly nd and use the right tools at the right time. The
display also keeps you on track with on-screen navigation aids,
directions, and messages. The illustration below shows how
the elements on the screen relate to the keypad.










HYB-1000 Tester Keyboard Interface
Internal Battery Indicator
This indicator appears in the screen’s top left corner. It lets
you know the status and charge level of the analyzer’s six 1.5
volt batteries. The X in the indicator shows that the HYB-1000
is powered by the battery you are testing, a feature which
conserves the internal batteries.
Voltmeter
When you rst connect the analyzer to a battery it functions
as a voltmeter. The voltage reading appears above the left soft
key until you move to other menus or functions.
Soft Keys
Press the two Soft Keys linked to the bottom of the screen
to perform the functions displayed above them. The
functions change depending on the menu or test process.
So it may be helpful to think of the words appearing above
them as part of the keys. Some of the more common soft-
key functions are SELECT, BACK, and EXIT.
POWER Button
Press the POWER button to turn the analyzer on and
o. The analyzer also turns on automatically when you
connect its test leads to a battery.
Title Bar
The Title Bar shows you the name of the current menu,
test tool, utility, or function.
Selection Area
The Selection Area below the Title Bar contains items you
select or into which you enter information. The area also
displays instructions and warnings.
Directional Arrows
When displayed in menu screens, the Directional Arrows
show you which ARROW key on the keypad to press
to display other icons or screens. The Up and Down
Directional Arrows, for example, let you know when to
press the UP () or DOWN () ARROW keys to display
the screens above and below the current screen.
The Left and Right Directional Arrows tell you when to
use the LEFT () or RIGHT ()ARROW keys to select an
icon.
When displayed under a list of options, the Directional
Arrows show you which keypad arrow to press to highlight
a character or an item in a list.
Scroll Bar
Another navigational aid is the Scroll Bar on the right
side of the screen. The position of its scroll box shows you
whether the screen is the top (or only screen), middle, or
last in a series.

Keypad Arrows
While the Directional Arrows serve as road signs, the
Keypad Arrows are the vehicle to its functions and
features. You use the keypad to log on, navigate to menus
and options, customize settings, and perform tests.

Alphanumeric Keypad
In some cases, you can use the Alphanumeric Keypad to
enter numerical test parameters instead of scrolling to
them with the ARROW keys.You also use the Alphanumeric
Keys to create and edit customer coupons and your shop
contact information on printed test results, and manage
technician IDs.
To add a space, press the RIGHT () ARROW key. To erase a
space and insert a character, press the LEFT () ARROW key.
Refer to the table below for the characters associated with
each alphanumeric key.

Keyboard Character Map
Data Entry Methods
To perform a particular test or function, the HYB-1000 will
ask for dierent types of information. This means that the
methods you use to enter information will change depending
on the type of information requested. The four types of entry
methods are described below.
Typically, the soft key below the left half of the screen cancels
your choice or returns you to the previous screen, although the
command above it may vary. (Examples: BACK and PRINT.) In
a similar fashion, the soft key below the right half of the screen
conrms your choice, although the word above it may also
vary (examples: SELECT and NEXT).
Menu Icons
A menu icon is a graphical
representation of a function you
can select, such as the Hybrid Icon
in the Main Menu. To select an
icon, use the LEFT () or RIGHT
()ARROW key to highlight it.
Highlighting changes the icon to a white picture on a black
background. To conrm your selection, press the appropriate
soft key.
Option Buttons
Some lists have option buttons
before each item. To select an
item, use the UP () or DOWN
() ARROW keys to move the dot
to the button next to the item.
You can also use the alphanumeric
keypad to enter the number preceding the option button. To
conrm your selection, press the appropriate soft key.
Scrolling Lists
Scrolling lists contain items that
extend above and below the
screen or the selection box that
contains them. To indicate that
there are more items, the symbols
appear to the right of the rst
visible or highlighted item on the
list.
To select from the list, use the UP () or DOWN () ARROW
keys to scroll to the item, or use the keypad to enter your
choice, and press the appropriate soft key. Scrolling increases
and decreases the units by ve. To increase your scrolling
speed, hold the UP () or DOWN () ARROW key.
Alphanumeric Entry
Some selections require you to use
the alphanumeric keypad. These
“user-dened” selections have a
blinking horizontal line (cursor) to
the right of the last character.
Use the UP () or DOWN ()
ARROW keys to highlight a line for editing. Display the
character, symbol, or number you want by rapidly pressing its
key as many times as needed. If you pause, the cursor moves
to the right. To backspace, press the LEFT ()ARROW key. Use
the RIGHT ()ARROW key to add a space. Use the UP () or
DOWN () ARROW keys to highlight a line for editing. When
nished, press the appropriate soft key to save your settings.

Main Menu
The Main Menu is the starting point for all tools and utilities,
which are depicted as icons.
Menu Icon Description
Access the options for testing hybrid
vehicles from many major manufacturers.
Tests one battery using the battery
information you select in a series of
screens.
Allows you to view your stored test results
and print them to an optional IR printer.
Includes a test counter, data transfer utility,
the HYB-1000 software version and serial
number.
Nine utilities, many of which customize
your user interface.
Info Menu
The Info Menu has three utilities to help you manage your test
data, and track the analyzer’s usage and history.
Menu Icon Description
Displays the total number of test in three
categories: Lifetime of the analyzer, by
User ID, and by decision.
Displays the software version, total tests
from rst use, and the serial number.
Print/View Menu
The HYB-1000 stores the last battery, system, and cable test
results in its memory until you perform another test. To review
or print results before you retest, select a test type in the Print/
View Menu.
Menu Icon Description
Displays the last Battery and System Test
results. Sends the results to an optional IR
printer.
Displays the last Cable Drop Test result.
Sends the result to an optional IR printer.
Utility Menu
The Utilities Menu allows you customize your analyzer. Before
testing, check the default values to see which options you may
want to change.
Menu Icon Description
Settings to adjust date and time.
Add, edit, or delete User IDs using up to six
alphanumeric characters.
Allows you to add a custom header to
printed test results.
Settings to adjust the screen contrast and
backlight time.
If you created a coupon with the Edit
Coupon utility, use Coupon to enable or
disable the inclusion of a coupon on printed
test results.
Allows you to create and store up to three
separate coupons to be printed on test
results.
Allows you to select degrees in C or F for
temperature measurements.
Formats the data card to receive data. Also
erases all data on the card.
Updates the analyzer software via les on
a data card.

The HYB-1000 is initially set up to require a default USER ID to
access the Main Menu. The instructions in this section will help
you quickly put your HYB-1000 to work.
Powering Up For The First Time
The default setting requires you to enter a user name before
the Main Menu is displayed. The user selection screen is
displayed when the unit is powered up for the rst time.
1. The rst 4 user ID’s are displayed on the screen when the
tester is turned on. To log in, use the UP () or DOWN ()
ARROW key to highlight a user ID.

CVG-2 Convergence Module
TheCVG-2WirelessConvergenceModuleisanintegralpartof
the hybrid battery test. When this module is plugged into a
vehicle’s OBD-II communications port, this module allows the
HYB-1000 to communicate with the on-board computer via RF
radio communications.
Connecting To A ODB-II Port
Operating a vehicle with obstructed
foot pedals creates a hazardous driving
condition.
For safe driving, make sure the CVG-2 module
does not interfere with the proper operation of
the vehicle’s foot pedals.
TheCVG-2moduleisdesignedconnectwithavehicle’sODB-II
communications port.
ODB-II Port
This port is usually located on the drivers side of the vehicle
underneath the dashboard.
Installed CVG-2 Module
Once a successful connection has been made the blue status
light at the end of the module will illuminate.
Installation Problems
Depending on the vehicle being tested, the location of the
ODB-IIportwillvary.Insomecases,theCVG-2modulemay
interfere with the operation of the vehicle’s foot pedals when
connected to the port.

Since testing a hybrid vehicle often involves driving it, make
sure the CVG-2 does not hinder the operation of the foot
pedal. You can do this by pivoting the module using the built-
in hinge.

remove the module from the driver’s foot well completely.

Hybrid Menu
NOTE: All of the hybrid vehicle tests options will re-
quire the included Midtronics CVG-2 Wireless Con-
vergence Module is connected to the vehicle ODB-II
communications connector.
The HYB-1000 Hybrid System Battery Analyzer will let you
access hybrid vehicle trouble codes, vehicle run charts, and
vehicle drive testing. Simply connect the wireless convergence
communication module to the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostics
port (OBD-II) and follow the menu instructions on the HYB-
1000.
The following test functions are available:

Accessing The Menu
Use the following procedure to access the hybrid vehicle
testing options.
1. In the Main Menu, select the HYBRID icon.

press the NEXT soft key to continue. You can also press the
associated number key on the tester keypad to select the
desired manufacturer and proceed to the next screen.

3. Using the ARROWkeys,selecttheVEHICLEMODEL.
The models displayed on this screen will vary, depending
on the manufacturer selected on the previous screen.
The HYBRID TEST menu appears on the screen.
Hybrid Test Menu
NOTE: Make sure the HYB-1000 tester’s internal AA
batteries have a sucient charge before proceeding
with any of the HYBRID TESTS. If the internal batteries
are low, replace them with fresh AA batteries.
Trouble Codes
Hybrid trouble codes are unique numbers the ve-
hicle’s on board computer uses to indicate specic
problem within the vehicle, including the hybrid’s
battery pack. These error codes are determined by
the manufacturer and are generally model specic.
Following a test, the HYB-1000 analyzer let’s you view the
specic trouble codes that were determined during the testing
process as well as clear the trouble codes from the analyzer.

1. From the HYBRID TESTS menu, use the ARROW key to se-
lecttheTROUBLECODESiconandpresstheSELECT soft
key.

2. Using the ARROW keys, highlight the VIEW TROUBLE
CODES icon and press the SELECT soft key.

If the module is not connected, the tester will prompt you
to turn the key on and connect the module at this time.

okay message.

If any problems were found during the testing process, a
listing of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes is displayed.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Each displayed code indicates a problem the tester has
found.
3. To view the description and cause for each trouble code,
use the ARROW keys to select the desired Trouble Code
and press the VIEW soft key to continue. You can also
press the associated number key on the tester keypad to
go directly to the description.
A description of the Trouble Code is displayed on the
screen.

CODES icon and press the SELECT soft key.

If the module is not connected, the tester will prompt you
to turn the key on and connect the module at this time.
3. At the conrmation screen, press the YES soft key to clear
the codes. The HYB-1000 tester will conrm that the codes
have been cleared.
Run Chart
The Run Chart function is designed to measure and
graphically display the amperage moving in and out
of the hybrid battery pack. Voltage is also measured
across the battery pack.
To perform an accurate test using the Run Chart, the vehicle
must be driven while the tester displays the data.
NOTE: Always obey all trac laws while performing
this test.
1. From the HYBRID TESTS menu, select the RUN CHART icon
and press the SELECT soft key.
IftheCVG-2wirelessconvergencemodulehasnotbeen
connected to the OBD-II connector, the tester will prompt
you to connect it at this time.

2. Once the CVG-2 is connected and communicating with
the HYB-1000 tester, the RUN CHART screen is displayed.
The tester will begin graphing the amperage from right to
left.

3. Press the END soft key to end the charting process.
Drive Test
The drive test is an interactive, menu-driven test that
uses live vehicle sensor information while performing
an accelerated drive test. The HYB-1000 tester will
then let you print the results to the optional IR printer
at the end of the test.
Working with the CVG-2 module and the vehicle’s onboard
computer, the Drive Test measures the conductance and state-
of-health of the individual blocks within the hybrid battery
pack. Average voltage and voltage change across all of the
blocks is also measured. The HYB-1000 tester will also analyze
the rate of temperature change across all the blocks within the
pack.
The drive test requires the vehicle to repeatedly accelerate and
decelerate until sucient data has been collected.
The testing process will begins once the vehicle is in motion.
The tester will emit a notication tone once enough data has
been collected to render an accurate test result.
Performing A Drive Test
1. From the HYBRID TESTS menu, select the DRIVE TEST icon
and press the SELECT soft key.
IftheCVG-2wirelessconvergencemodulehasnotbeen
connected to the OBD-II connector, the tester will prompt
you to connect it at this time.
2. OncetheCVG-2isconnectedandcommunicatingwiththe
HYB-1000 tester, the rst of two INSTRUCTIONS screens
are displayed.

the vehicle has been properly warmed up before
performing the Drive Test..
Press NEXT to continue to the next screen or BACK to
return to the HYBRID TESTS screen.

Avoid Hazardous Driving Conditions
The Drive Test will require you to rapidly acceler-
ate and decelerate the vehicle. Make sure you can
perform this test in a safe area without risking col-
lision with other trac, vehicles or pedestrians.
Press NEXT to begin the Drive Test.
6. A Drive Test TESTING screen appears.

As the test proceeds the bar graph will gradually ll from
left to right. Quicker acceleration and rmer braking will
increase the rate of data acquisition.
7. Once it has acquired enough data, the HYB-1000 tester
will emit a notication tone and display the test results on
the screen.

Once a Drive Test has been successfully completed, the rst of

Inspecting The Battery
Before starting the test visually inspect the battery for:
•Cracked, buckled, or leaking case. If you see any of these
defects, replace the battery.
•Corroded, loose, or damaged cables and connections. Re-
pair or replace them as needed.
•Corrosion on the battery terminals, and dirt or acid on the
case top. Clean the case and terminals using a wire brush
and a mixture of water and baking soda.
•Lowelectrolytelevel.Iftheelectrolytelevelistoolow,add
distilled water to the level specied by the battery manu-
facturer, and fully charge the battery. Do not overll.
•Corroded or loose battery tray and hold-down xture.
Tighten or replace as needed.
The preferred battery test location is in the vehicle. However, if
you plan to test out of the vehicle:
•Always disconnect the negative cable from the battery
rst and reconnect it last.
•Always use a carry tool or strap to lift and transport the
battery.
Never connect the clamps directly onto the
threaded steel studs or bolts.
To ensure accurate test results for Group 31 batteries,
the clamps are designed to connect to lead stud adapt-
ers or to the lead bases of threaded studs. When testing
at side posts, always use lead terminal adapters.
Failure to properly install lead terminal adapt-
ers, or using adapters that are dirty or worn,
may cause false test results.
To avoid damage, never use a wrench to tighten the
adapters more than ¼ turn.
At the start of the test, make sure all vehicle accessory loads
are o, the key is not in the ignition, and the doors are closed.

Scroll to your User ID and press the NEXT soft key.

To create a new User ID, scroll to a placeholder (USER01,
USER02,etc.),pressNEXT and select the Users function in
the Utility Menu. See “Users”on page 15 for instructions.
Connecting To A Battery
Do not connect the HYB-1000 to a voltage
source greater than 60 Vdc.
1. Ifthebatterieshavethreadedstuds,screwthenegative(–)
stud adapter onto the negative terminal, and the positive
(+) adapter onto the positive terminal.
2. Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal or
adapter.
3. Connecttheblackclamptothenegative(–)terminalor
adapter.

Performing An Auxilary Battery Test
The Battery Test function tests one battery in or out of the
vehicle. To test the battery pack the analyzer will guide you
through the steps of selecting your battery test parameters
and interpreting the results.
Chapter 5: Aux Battery Test

HYB-1000 KIT
If you use the ARROW keys to select option buttons, press
the NEXT soft key to continue to the next step. If you use the
alphanumeric keypad to enter the number preceding the
option button, no additional keypress is needed to save your
selection. The BACK soft key returns you to the Main Menu at
the start of the test and to the previous screen as you progress.

a few moments to evaluate the battery before the results
are displayed on the screen.
In some cases the HYB-1000 may ask for additional information

Test Requirements” section for more information.

The HYB-1000 displays the complete results on multiple
screens. The HYB-1000 generates a test code for REPLACE
decisions. To view the code, press the UP () or DOWN ()
ARROW key .
To send the results to the IR printer, align the analyzer’s IR

soft key. To return to the Main Menu, press the END soft key.

Additional Test Requirements
For a more decisive result the analyzer may ask for additional
information or further explore the battery’s condition. The
following messages and instructions may appear before the
analyzer displays the results of your test.
System Noise Detected
The analyzer has detected computer, ignition noise, or parasitic
drain, and will attempt to retest. Make sure all vehicle loads are
o, doors are closed, and the ignition is in the o position. The
analyzer will automatically retest when it no longer detects
system noise. If the message reappears:
•You may be testing too close to a noise source, such as a
charger or other high-current device. If so, move away and
retest.
• If you are unable to nd the source of the noise, fully
charge the battery and retest. If the message appears after
recharging, test the battery out of the vehicle.
• Disconnectthebatterycablesandretest.
Unstable Battery Detected
A battery that is weak, or that has just been charged, may
retain enough electrical activity to be detected by the analyzer
and will adversely aect the test results. A fully charged
battery should stabilize quickly, after which the analyzer
will automatically retest. Weak batteries should be charged
and retested. If the battery is fully charged, check the clamp
connections.
Deep Scan Test
In some cases the analyzer may need to further analyze a
deeply discharged battery to determine whether the battery
should be replaced or if it has a chance to be recovered. It then
briey conducts a Deep Scan Test of the battery.

The Print/View Menu allows you to view the results of the last
hybrid battery pack test and auxiliary battery test. The results
of the last test are stored in memory until the next test is
performed. These results can also be printed with the optional
IR printer.
